Hiding navigation key - Huawei Mate 9 Questions & Answers

Hello everybody!
I am extremely disappointed with the firmware! Mine is EU. If you make the Navigation Key of the screen type or "soft" you should provide the way to hide it in order to free extra screen space. Otherwise why not to make it "hard" or buttons? This was the feature I loved in first Huawei Ascend Mate which I have been using for several years. I could hide it and slide back from the bottom whenever I liked. Why on earth they removed it here on Mate 9? On a lot of apps the navigation keys are useless and they look stupid. Especially after I found that this feature is preserved in Chinese version. I really got used to it so much that I feel ready to get rid of otherwise not so much remarkable phone in favor of some other model.

In Chinese version still exists.... But no in European and international... This had happened to mate 8 too....

In addition, there is no working guide to make navigation keys hiding. I tried some advices, changed build.prop, changed parameter in settings database. Yes, one new button appeared, like \/. I pressed it, navigation keys went off, but never appeared again. Have to factory reset to restore them.

There are apps to do this, I have used GMD Immersive. But it's a bit of a pain sometimes particularly when using the keypad.

GMD Full Screen Immersive Mode https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gmd.immersive is of some help

Since GMD doesn't work properly on EMUI 5 you can hide the navbar by installing KangVIP. It's an option in KangVIP Tools.

Where does that come from? Can't find kang vip tools on the play store.

Where are the Kangatools VIP

https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-3-fingers-fullscreen-hide-t3275050 works for me. Can configure autohide for specific applications. Need to be installed from ADB as described in the first post.

Still the best way to handle the screen navigation keys was made in first Huawei Ascend Mate phone like in these screenshots.
Hide navigation bar ON
Hide navigation bar OFF
Screenshot 2
Screenshot 3
Just one effortless swipe up anytime and that's all. I wonder if anybody can just repeat this simple scheme?

Write to the people who devlope Lianage Os for Mate 9'to add this feature from Mate 8

Try this app.

No root needed, just an adb command to enable immersive mode. Good thing about this is keyboard pops up when it should and works properly even in full screen mode.
Just toggle it from the quick shortcuts.

[Q] Keyboard dock customizations

Anyone know how to do the following:
1. Change the color of the mouse pointer. I can only see it if the screen brightness is turned all the way up.
2. Is there way to map a key to the recent programs screen?
3. Is there anyway to "Alt+Tab" through open programs? I know the concept of open programs is different than in Windows but even a single key to cycle through would be awesome.
Thanks
as of right now, no no and no.
sorry.
You could possibly change the mouse pointer color if you root and could find the image extract it, edit it and then replace it, but as far as i know no one has tried.
there is noway to remap keys so for now you have to actually touch the screen for this. and yes i find it annoying too.
honeycomb dosn't support a function like that. maybe ice cream this fall.
Apps and recent apps are two glaring omissions to the keyboard considering all the crap shortcut keys I'll most likely never go near. A long press on the home key would be nice to bring up recent apps. Control x/c/p would be nice shortcuts as well.

I know Ctrl+p works. Does ctrl+c/x not work?

Remap Keyboard Keys

I have AOKP Milestone 6 installed and I love how it looks, especially the Hide Notification Bar option because it makes my TF feel more like a netbook when I have it docked. The only problem is that the long press shortcuts don't work on the keyboard (ex. long pressing the home key doesn't give me the recent apps menu, it just brings me to the home screen).
I was wondering if there was a way to re-map some of the shortcut keys in the top row (bluetooth toggle, camera, internet, etc...) to my own custom actions such as launching the recent apps menu, killing a window and bringing up the notification bar. I know it's possible to do this in Linux since I just did it for a remote that I use with XBMC (the remote emulates a keyboard), I just didn't know if they feature is extended to Android or not.

its possible but not easy. Some things can be remapped in the users/ect files such as ausec.(c something) but other more complex things like recent apps have to be done in framework-res.apk as far as i remember
Check out /system/usr/keylayout/asusec.kl.
I'm not sure if you can map keys to specific things like killing a window or bringing up the notification bar. However, recent apps is accessible through alt+tab (try it!) and so you may want to swap the Search and Alt keys.
EDIT: Some useful key names to look for and replace:
ALT_LEFT: left alt
ALT_RIGHT: right alt
SEARCH: search key
FORWARD_DEL: delete, as opposed to backspace. not mapped to anything by default
ESCAPE: escape key. I have this bound to the wifi key because I always accidentally hit it, and sometimes escape is useful in terminals or remote desktop

Thats right usr/keylayout not user/ect don't know what i was thinking there. I know there is a way to exchange the stupid alt-tab icon recent apps to the cards recent apps but i don't have time to do that right now. I was also going to work on getting a guide set up on how to remap everything because it seems to be a pretty common desire.
Edit:
Found it

Thanks for the info guys, I'll give it a try! I definitely think I'm going to stick with AOKP for a while since it seems to give me the best experience since I've had my TF (over a year).

How to customise the Mate 7 official ROM ? (Like GravityBox)

Hello everyone,
Aller many months using my Mate 7,i'm pretty happy with, but something is annoying me. Well, I had many Samsung devises before and everybody knows that it's really easy to customise anything on it, it's not the same at all with à Huawei device.
I'm aware that Xposed Installer doesn't work properly (so sad) and i was wondering if this were any way to customise our huawei phone ?
I'm talking about True custom, Like sms settings, launcher settings, New features... Etc exactly Like GravityBox.
Thank you all
And, I noticed that the huawei launcher is sometimes refreshing Like the icons dissapear and reappear... It's so annoying ! Do you have some things similar ? Any solutions ?
I guess the easiest way to start is to install some different launcher. I use Apex launcher and pretty happy with it. Various animation effects, tons of icon packs, gestures etc. I think that Nova and others will do more or less the same.
One thing I truly miss is statusbar customization (this battery icon and text with "%" is just horrible). I've tried Flat style bar indicators module, but it does some strange things on my device (GSM signal icon disappears and other), but there are some people that have it working. You should try at least.
I don't want to change the launcher, ireally Like many ios-Like features and i'd Like to keep it.
I tried, but i can't install xposed properly, the normal install bug and the auto recovery and manual recovery neither, the emui recovery is pretty bad !

Dont know if to buy or not.

In thoughts to by an Mate 9 but have a few questions:
1) Is there a expanded desktop option on Huawei Mate 9?
2) Does Nova Launcher work well on the letest update on it?
3) I would appreciate if someone could post a screenshot with the View Mode on the smallest and the Font Size on the smallest? It is important for me to get the very small text you find in Lionage Os.
4) Hows it going with the release of the Kernal of the phone? Lineage Os?
5) How well have the camera worked on previous Huawei phones with custom roms, have they still been the same afterwards? I have experienced on three different phones that the camera went worse after installing Cyanogen Mod, Lineage Os...
6) How hard is it to port the camera app from Huawei to an custom rom?
I can't answer the custom rom and root questions, i can help you with the other stuff though.
1) No there isn't
2) It works amazingly well!
3) what do you want to screenshot me? The settings page with the font size or a specific app?
Sorry for not being able to answer everythinf, hope i still helped you a bit

If you want custom ROMs I'd advise you to find another device if not this is the whole package the best phone I have ever used and I've used most of them.
Great phone. My set up attached with google now swipe left and pixel launcher
What size do you use in view mode and font size on that picture?
Here is my OPO with smallest in both settings

I use custom DPI of 365 set in developer options.
Sorry for bumping a week old thread. Just wanted to let you guys know that you can actually hide the status bar up top. Download Tiles from the Play Store. It lets you add quick settings tiles for just about anything. There's one for immersive mode, where you can press the tile and it'll hide the status bar, navigation bar, system bar or a dialog for your choosing. I have it set so whenever I toggle the quick setting tile, it hides the status bar up top, which is what you are looking for. It works great.
Here is a pair of screenshots of the quick tiles from the app, and how it looks like without the status bar. Let me know if you need any help or have any other questions.

Thanks! The only thing left is a way to hide the Navi buttons in choosen apps, for an example chrome.

Possible solution to some recent questions...

Some folks have mentioned looking for ways of locking screen and other functions without using the hardware buttons. Several new feature options have accomplished this for me and maybe others can profit from this combination. In the Themes section there is a mod to bring back the 2 button nav bar. Here is the link: https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-4-xl/themes/magisk-module-bring-android-pie-2-t4002831
Combine that with the recently added option in -Accesibility- to add the nav bar button by enabling the Accessibility Menu and it created a clean looking setup that is rapidly growing on me. Clearly it's not for everyone but that's why XDA is here... Fun and options. Lol. This is what it looks like.
can we have this as a floating icon on the screen?

Doesn't seem so. Looks like it functions like a bottom version of the top quick links and with bigger buttons.
