I just bought a used Verizon S7, and everything so far has worked perfectly with the exception that it is not recognized by my computer. When I plug in the USB, the phone only charges and does not even appear as a new device in Windows (10 x64). I have already tried installing and reinstalling the Samsung mobile device drivers, without success--same with Kief 3 and Smart Switch. I've tried every USB port on my laptop and PC (and my wife's MacBook).
I have already enable developer options, oem unlock, and usb debugging. I have also tried changing the USB configuration in the developer options menu (MTP, PTP, etc). What I find really strange is that "touch for other usb options" doesn't even appear under the notification bar. When plugged in, it simply says "charging."
I have tried factory resetting multiple times. I also tried upgrading the firmware to beta 7.0. Nothing has worked. Please help.

I have a note 5. With similar issues. Ended up being a bad usb circut board.
Would charge most of the time but no usb connections. In the end wouldnt charge either.
If u need to transfer files try a app called wifi file transfer. That and wireless charging was my best friend.
The notes usb circut board has the home and touch keys attached so it wasnt feasable to risk separating the screen and outer glass for a 6 dollar part. Not the s series may not be built the same.
That's interesting, though not very reassuring. Any ideas about the missing "touch for other usb options" under the notification bar? Since the phone is Verizon and already carrier unlocked, my plan was to flash to SM-G930U. But that is obviously not possible if I can't connect to Odin. Any other suggestions?

I have a note 2 I currently use- when I plug the usb in - in windows 7 I get the option to view files etc....
I just bought a used sprint galaxy s5 from my ol ladys sister who had it hooked up at one of those corner wireless shops.
I want to root it but read to make sure your pc recognizes it first- which it does not.
Ive downloaded the latest usb drivers for the phone.
Ive enabled debugging mode.
Ive used the original supplied cord and also tried my note 2 cord.
When I plug it in it recognizes it and detects drivers but the phone does not show up under my computer and I dont get the window popup asking if I want to view files etc.
Getting really frustrated.
Any ideas?

When I plug the s5 into my pc and pull down the notification bar ...it doesnt even show usb connected.
I cant find any usb options other than usb debugging.
I just went through all this same crap with a galaxy mega a buddy had.
I just dont get why there is no "usb connected as" notification and why this is so complicated to connect to pc when my note connects fine
Bad cable? Maybe Bad Drivers? Where did you download them from? Windows is going to try to recognize it as a media device. Ill give you a couple tips
Just because the "popup window" doesnt popup, you probably just have auto play set to recognize it a certain way.
Just copy and paste this into your explorer window:
%windir%\system32\control.exe /name Microsoft.AutoPlay
and then reset it for your phone.
Also.
1. Make sure the cable is actually connecting, like charging the phone, consistantly, not on and off. If it is, then you know thats good, if not, switch the usb drive you have the cable plugged into. USB Ports actually on the motherboard are the ones Ive always had luck with never disconnecting.
2. If you want to root your phone, and you want the adb drivers, Windows wont find those for you.
Thanks for the reply.
I downloaded the drivers straight from the windows usb driver dowload page for my phone from samsung.
Ive uninstalled reboot,installed rebooted.
Ive set usb debugging off/on.
Tried dialling *#0808# which ive read is the code to enable usb but it doest work it just calls the #.
Tried all my moyherboard usb ports
Tried different cable
The original cable charges fine.
This sg5 NEVER has a usb icon when connected to usb... i find that odd.
A samsung mega a buddy had which was also previously hooked up at the same wireless shop that this s5 was..... also has the same exact issue.... no usb icon and not recognised as media by windows and no way to change usb settings.
Its like that wireless shop disabled usb on there phones for some reason.
I had the phone 2 weeks and cant do anything with it untill I can root it.
My note 2 works fine , i get usb icon in notification area,i can switch to media device from there.
On the sg5 theres no usb icon even though it connects fine to the pc as installer
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk
Maybe Im misunderstanding you, but when I have my phone plugged into my pc there is no usb icon, its just connected as a media device and shows its charging. Both screenshots are of my phone while its plugged into my computer
When you plug it into your computer can you access the files on the phone through your windows explorer, like in the first screenshot?
Thanks for replying and the screenshots.
When my phone is plugged into the computer it shows the charging status but no "connected as media device" it doesnt show a connected as anything so nothing to touch for options.
The phone does not show up under windows explorer in my computer.
Ive been using galaxy phones since the original galaxy and never had issues like this.
I just dont get it
I'm similar issues...my phone will just time out in the middle of transfers or won't see the phone at all
Both of your issues sound like driver issues. Heres the link from Samsung for Windows for the S5
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/SM-G900PZKASPR
To make this issue stranger....
My neighbor came over to borrow juice for her ecig. I noticed she has an s5.
I ask if i can connect it to my computer and as soon as I plug it in with my s5 cable...bam ...connected as media device , touch for usb options.
And my computer brought up the screen to view files.
So i now know its not my pc,drivers, or cables.
I did however notice when I plugged my s5 in.... in the notification area where it would say touch for usb options.
It says "system update"
But i have no sim or service on the phone so it doesnt update.
Could the system update be needed for the usb to work?
How would i even update system ?its nolonger on sprint. I wouldnt want any more over the air updates anyway as im wanted to root so i can save a straight talk apn and probablly flash a custom rom
Yea... this is nuts.
This sprint s5 i got looks and performs like a brand new phone.
But cannot for the life of me get "connected as ......" to show when a usb is plugged in. When i search settings for "pc connection" , "media" , mtp" , usb" etc.....
Theres nothing I can find to enable how to connect when usb is connected.
I dont even know who or where to ask anymore.
Bought this phone weeks ago and cant do anything with it.
My neighbors s5 connects to my pc no problems. So does my note 2.
I just dont know anymore what else to do
i dont see where not having a sim would matter. does the usb port on your phone seem loose or anything? do you have access to another pc to try connecting to that?
ultimately you can get around most things that require needing a usb connection. theres even a wireless adb.
i doubt this will work either, but have you tried seeing if odin will recognize the phone in download mode? (power off the phone and press the power+home+volume down buttons)
also what version of android is on the phone now? if its still on 4.4.2 or 4.4.4 then you might want to look into towelroot, but i think i remember reading thats not working with 5.0
as for rooting, you could try looking for a flashable update.zip , put it on a external sd card, put that in your phone and boot into recovery (power off the phone and press the power+home+volume up buttons) and flash it, then find a custom recovery like clockworkmod or philz touch or something
all in all im 99% sure theres a way to root the phone without having to do anything on a pc, its just a matter of finding a way to do it, and the before choosing a method to tell you to try, i need to know the android version. also im just assuming the model number is SM-G900P, is that right?
Go into your settings and tell me the
Software Version
Model Number
Android Version
and the Baseband Version
once factory reset...usb works fine.
Im now rooted and flashed MOAR
thanks for all who tried to help
Glad you got it figured out

Obvious Question #1: Did you check the phone notification dropdown area to verify the phone is in MTP or PTP mode so it will show up on the pc? As for transfering files...you do have the option of loading up a microsd card with whatever files or installing a wifi adb app to connect wirelessly. You could even use an app like airdroid to let you do all sorts of things.

You are overcomplicating things. 1st...there is ALWAYS a notification in the dropdown that says what mode the phone is in....mtp, ptp, charge only or "cdrom mode" which installs the usb drivers. Pressing on that notification allows you to change the mode the device is in.
As for rooting....all you need to do that is to flash or boot TWRP (details on booting it are in the system image thread) and then flash the supersu zip from inside twrp to your device...reboot and done...but I think in the newer TWRP's they even offer options to root automatically...ie the zip is already built in. After rebooting to your phone you install the supersu apk from google play so you can configure what apps have superuser access.

Your telling me when the phone is plugged into the pc you don't see the notifications below or some version of them at all? If so then you need to fully uninstall the devices in device manager including remove the drivers...then use the drivers in the system image thread (since you obviously can't use the ones from "cd rom mode" which would be the best solution). USB debugging isn't even an issue yet...your phone should still show up to the pc as a camera device (ptp) under just about ANY scenario using even built in windows drivers.

Have you tried a different cable? Perhaps that one is damaged or is only setup for charging? Only thing I can think of.
And then I realize you mentioned that Not sure what else would prevent it from giving you those options.
I'm also facing similar issue after the 2 update. Were you able to fix this?

Which kind of USB cable(s) have you tried specifically? Were they cheap eBay/generic kinds or well known branded ones?
Something as little as a Micro USB cable can cure a lot of problems. It needs to be a well built one by a known manufacturer to avoid problems.

Actually I've been having pretty good luck with the $1 ones from Dollar Tree but the key is certainly to try multiple cables....on some the microusb plug will make it difficult to get a solid connection especially if you have a case on the phone.
You may be missing the point of "trying" different cables. It's not so much the "quality" of the cable, it's the fact that some cables are for "power only", and "will not" transfer data, regardless of how hard you try.
You need to be using a "proven" data/power cable, otherwise your beating your head against the table for nothing.
Just to add, I put a piece of red tape on all my usb cables that are power only, no guess work.
I own idol3/moto g 2015 and s3, have no problem with other 2 device. I'm having this MTP issue after the UE40 update. Verified in all 3 OS, adb is detecting the device but not MTP/PTP. Idol3 support is not worthy responses.

I had the same problem as well. It only showed charging when I plugged in the USB cable. Tried switching cables, turning off and on USB debugging but nothing worked. I finally just rebooted the phone and then it worked again. Strange that it suddenly stopped.
I have a different issue; the different USB modes work fine but I don't have the 'cdrom' option in the USB mode dialog. I've tried various Alcatel ADB drivers that I have found and none are working, using Win7 64. My Idol 3 4.7 is 6039I (US).
Answered my own question, simply install the Mobile Upgrade Q software.
nope, doesn't show up. it's a bug. i had it before, googled until i found a fix and got it working, now it's back to not being recognized. nothing shows on drop down menu.
Hello all,
Played with the S7 couple of days now and decided to try and transfer some movies to the phone to test VR. But it only charges when i connect it and that makes this task kinda hard to do. I installed the samsung usb drivers and tried different settings in the *#0808# menu but no luck. The Smart Switch app is not showing up in the Store either so can't try that.
Anyone got some tips or solution?
Make sure to be using the factory USB cabel, because some 3rd party charging cables do not include the data pin

Thanks! I guess this is what living with iPhone for a year and a half does to you. You stop thinking... Anyway case solved!
As a follow up to this. What do you all recommend if even the factory USB cable refuse to work reliably? What I mean is that, every time I connect my s7 to PC, it prompts me to "allow MTP" access. But after I allow MTP, and the "card" and "phone" show up as part of S7's drives in windows 10, often times the contents of the drives on the S7 will not show up properly (e.g. folder name doesn't show up, folder themselves are empty). What is going on? I reinstalled the samsung drivers for windows couple times now and have tried many different usb cables. Of the once that work, the MTP connection would randomly just crap out, or behave as I mentioned above...
Is the encryption messing with things? Or do I have a messed up USB connector on my S7? Thanks.
Today, looking at the storage left i noticed i had only 12.55 instead of ~25 (my N5 is the 32gb model) and i tried to reset the device following a guide. Easy, right?
No.
The device didn't connect to usb, i tried 3 different cables, on 3 different pcs, with and without drivers, uninstalling and reinstalling them, even reinstalling windows on a machine. Nothing.
I thought it could be the OS, so i changed rom(i put on Cataclysm 6.0.1) but the situation was still the same.
I even tried to mount the storage in TWRP but no signal at all.
Not even fastboot. Only charge.
You are my only hope, please help me.

While plugged in, swipe down from the top and change usb charging to usb for file transfer.

There is no signal AT ALL, no choice between charge and MTP, no devices in Device Manager on windows, nothing.
I tried turning on debug usb, no signal.
Tried forcing MTP in developer settings, nothing.
Only one single time i heard the classic windows sound telling me a device was plugged in but there was no phone on file explorer and the phone was only charging.
It's only charging now.

For some reason I can't connect my Pixel 4a to my PC with a USB C - USB A cable (or USB A - USB C, not sure what the official name is) , even though it worked fine on my previous phone.
Included with the phone is a USB C - USB A adapter, but I see no use for it unless you have a special USB A cable which I don't.
My motherboard does have a USB C slot on it and it does read my phone when I plug it in that way but for some weird reason it's really loose and doesn't stay connected unless I keep physical pressure on it.
I'm not going to update to Android 11 until the November update because I've heard the current build has a few bugs, but does anyone know if Android 11 fixed the USB C - USB A issue?
Have you made sure to switch to file transfer mode? It defaults to 'no transfer' mode when I plug into my laptop.
Most likely you need to toggle the phone connection settings to data transfer, originally it will be set to charge only I think.

I had this issue too. Windows file explorer would just crash after one or two files and stop transfer, no matter the size and type. (Yes I had file transfer selected on my phone ?)
Then windows update gave me a driver called "Google Inc. - Other Hardware - Kedacom KDB Composite Interface". I also updated to the newest firmware on the phone. No idea which of these did the trick or if it was the combo. However. Smooth sailing now ??
Hope this helps
(If windows update refuses to give you the driver, you can get it from Microsoft's update catalogue online. A Google search will do)
Ok it's completely messed up. When I search for USB settings it doesn't let me change anything at all, even though when I first got the phone I could and I changed it to transfer files. EDIT: No actually the setting that I changed was a developer option called "Default USB configuration" which I changed to transfer files but that still did nothing.
I just plugged in my phone and looked for the USB setting in the notification area but it wasn't there, but I noticed an option called "manage"
I went in there and noticed this. (see attachments) it's locked to be off and I can't change it. Very odd.

You're in notification settings. Try short tapping rather than long tapping to get the menu to pop up allowing you to select data transfer.
Changing default USB settings in developer options doesn't work for me either.

My point is that the notification that normally comes up when you plug in your phone to a computer to change to data transfer, charge only ect ect isn't even coming up because the firmware is stopping that notification from coming up altogether and I can't change it so it does.

Almost certainly a cable or host port issue. Swap cables and see what happens. Same for hosts/host ports. You're not going to have toggling options if the phone does not 'see' all expected lines/pins.
I had the same issue and changed to a different cord to fix the problem.
You have an non certified cable it seems, I've confirmed this pixel 4a works with only certain cables for usb transfer, also the usb a to c cable you have will not charge the device as well.
Get a cable from know manufacturers like Samsung, it worked for me.
Yeah turns out it was a cable. Strange how my cable worked with my old phone but not with the Pixel 4a
Had this issue with my new 4a just now. Cable was fine, even used the new cable that comes with it using a Usb C to Usb A adapter. Nothing worked. Upon opening Device Manager I found a new device called 'Kedacom USB Device'. After trying random things, I decided to uninstall the current drivers by right clicking on it and clicking 'Uninstall device'. Suddenly the phone connected, and even showed the adb prompt.
So for anyone still facing this issue, hopefully this solution might help
