Truth Snooper. - Security Discussion

Hi. Someone installed a spying app called Truth Snooper on my friend's unrooted Note 3. How can we remove or access it without login/account information?
I can't tell you how creepy this feels.

I can imagine this is quite annoying. I'd say factor reset... But that would undo everything mind you what's worse lol:/. And not being rooted might be annoying lol. Tbh I can't find any information out about this app. It's called Truth Snooper?
I shall do some searching and thinking.
---------- Post added at 01:25 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:22 PM ----------
What ever you do! Don't login to anything on it. Most spying apps have keyloggers!
---------- Post added at 01:33 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:25 PM ----------
Hello . So I've done some. Digging and honestly can't find anything about this. Assuming this app doesn't have a hook. As it's not a rooted phone I don't imagine it's possible it will have hooked itself into system files. Unless the guy managed to root, install then. Hide everything? Lol. I'm just guessing.
Give root checker a whirl? Worth a try.
Apparently this app works: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.antispycell.free&hl=en
But in all honesty if that doesn't work factory reset and full wipe of internal storage is your only choice :/ as your not rooted you can't go into folders and start removing stuff. I'm really sorry this has happened and it is horrible. But in future I'd suggest your friend doesn't leave his/her phone lying around.
I'm sorry . For every good intentioned app (assuming you think spying on your kisds doesn't sound like a gross invasion of their privacy) there is 4 bad intentions it can be used for :/.
---------- Post added at 01:34 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:33 PM ----------
Also my suggestion is reset all your passwords. Make sure nothing can be taken.

Thank you for your advice.
Factory reset it is.

That should probably do the job but be aware that it may not if the malware has rooted the phone or compromised it via some other exploit. So you should check with several root checking apps. If rooted then you need to reflash ROM as factory reset does not touch many of the partitions. Also the external SD card is not touched (normally) by either method so that may be a potential route to be reinfected, so too open ports on your wifi. The phone may not even have to be "fully rooted" to be infected if some security vulnerability has been exploited to escalate privileges.
Also you should submit the suspect file to virustotal and scan phone with some decent anti malware app before and after cleaning. If it was me I'd also install an app like AFwall to check and see if there were any attempts being made to connect to suspect servers.

Factory resetting may remove the app.

[Q] Phone Storage inaccessible after encryption

So I was in the process of encrypting my phone storage after setting a PIN. The 'Internal Storage' encrypted fine, but when I encrypted the 'Phone storage', it encrypted REALLY fast, much too fast for being almost 50% full, and it never required a restart, which I thought was odd. But I did a restart anyways, and now I can't access the phone storage at all. In the Storage menu in Settings it just says 'Unavailable' for both Total Space and Available. I can't even back up the phone to do a factory reset, because I can't access the "external" SD card from anywhere, please help!
Hey,
I have exactly the same problem. Did you ever fix it? I'd rather not have to do a factory reset!

Check this out as well, seems like it could be a bug from a recent OTA update.

Not looking good.
Just out of curiosity, as I saw this on the Galaxy Nexus forums a lot, why encrypt? Unless you're a businessman or similar, and not just need to encrypt pictures of your dog, why do it?
If you read more about it, you'd know the risks.

Why encrypt? Because it's really the only way to prevent someone from accessing your data if they come across your phone. Even if you set up a PIN, a person who's moderately knowledgeable about Android phones will be able to connect it to a computer and bypass the PIN in any number of ways. Plus, I know receive company e-mail on my phone and they're now pushing for all Android phones to be encrypted.

No, I never did fix it, I ended up grabbing the 1.85 RUU and wiping EVERYTHING off the phone (luckily, I had made a fairly recent backup before I encrypted). I see in the T-Mobile forums that one guy seems to have a way of encrypting the phone storage that might work...but I'm not sure I wanna risk it...

Yep, I have to encrypt as part of policies if I want to connect to work's exchange server. My work has used an app that monitors the compliance and if I don't get encryption working they can wipe my phone.
What a pain!

MK802

Hacked
......
The aspect ratio and network speed issues will need a kernel fix, apparently that's coming in the official V2 firmware.
I can confirm that the ZTE MP112 3G dongle works, sadly though the "mobile hotspot" doesn't, so no ability to use the MK as a smart router just yet
......
Hello all .. Sorry for the newbie question .. are there any prereqs before installing this ROM such as achieving root .. Or that will already be achieved by following the instructions above? .. I just wanted to confirm before I get going with this .. Thanks

thanks for this, however my wifi is still dropping periodically although situation has been somewhat improved over original rom.
with original rom i was getting dropped to 1mbps with apps telling me no network connection available.... every minute or so.
after flashing your rom it has improved to dropping every 5 minutes.... still not good enough for me to stream the youtube vids i wanna watch though.
hope there can be some improvements?
Are you using a wireless remote/keyboard ?, if so then try putting the transmitter for it on an extension lead and move it out the way of the stick, that should help.
I'm getting no drops on mine, and I've only got one wire soldered to the antenna inside at the moment

I'm using my S3 as a wireless controller for it, by using the app droidmote.
Nevertheless, the drops were occuring even when i was just using a wired mouse during the initial setup phase (which took very long due to the repeated connection drops).
I guess i'll wait and see if the next firmware update helps, else i'm thinking of trying a DIY aluminium foil antenna project for it
I am having issues with WIFI on the stock rom. I'm not sure which version it is but it is on 4.1.1. My wifi signal is terrible were it is yet I have full bars on my laptop. I know this has a dual antenna so it was supposed to have good signal. It makes doing anything internet based a chore. Should I attempt a flash of this rom to try and fix it or wait for "official" if there ever is one? Cheers.
so far, so good....
I guess I've just gotten lucky. I bought a unit directly from Sainsmart and it was delivered in just 4 days (for a premium +/- $85 total).... Even running the stock firmware, setup was a snap and went flawlessly.
I've installed Finless 1.4 and messed around with unit for a couple hours controlling via droidmote on my GSII and Nexus 7, wireless keyboard/mouse and even a cheap air mouse I bought on Amazon.
I don't think I've ever dropped wireless signal, and have streamed content from netflix, youtube, XBMC and from my PC via upnp.
I have a Vizio HD router which is upstairs and the unit is connected to my TV downstairs and even with only 2 bars of wifi signal it streams HD content no problem.
From all of the forums and posts I've read it sounds like the mk808 is riddled with problems but I have yet to experience any besides your typical android app incompatibility issues for a tablet based UI.
The rom seems solid and I am happy to see development for it. Keep it up....

I don't have access to it right now, but as most android ROMs are you go to SYSTEM SETTINGS and scroll down to the bottom to ABOUT PHONE or ABOUT TABLET.... once selected it will show you which version and android you are running, kernel etc..
I do not mind you posting my ROM here but please do not put it on other download sites. You can tell people to come to freaktab to get it and you can provide a link to it there in this post.
Also for anyone wanting to ask questions about my ROM, I am the developer of it so please feel free to ask me question on freaktab which is my home.

So I am going to be 100% clear here.
First when I looked at this post this morning
1) It said FInless ROM 1.4
2) Other users in this thread even called it FInless 1.4 see post #11 as an example
3) Alteran77 has PM'ed me first saying he got it off a torent then said he used my ROM to make this ROM.
4) The first post has NOW been completely edited to cover the tracks and even the title is now 1.5 custom ROM. Sorry I call BS here!
Now I do not mind if someone uses my work and ENHANCES it. e.g. adds value to the ROM like more fixes, etc. What I will not tolerate is a direct ripoff. A direct ripoff is when someone takes my ROM and changes the boot screen and build.prop to call it thier ROM. If the do not add value, then all your doing is stealing other peoples work and calling it yours!
Also what usually is done is if someone does take someones ROM and adds value, they also give credit to the original author. So absolutely no credit or even a mention of where this ROM came from was posted!
Then the person posts WHAT they did to the original ROM to make it better. NOTHING here was posted about what was done to my ROM to make it better.
I tag my ROMs in ways that help me identify it as I have been ripped off before like this. I will download this ROM and analyze it.
I am betting this is a rippoff no more!

If you have a rooted device your chance of getting a "virus" increases. A virus is not your typical virus. For a virus to work you have to install it as an app. The most common form of viruses is the fake apps that disguise themselves as valid apps and steal personal information form you:silly:

That's why its open source, it's for people to scrutinize for any evil code.
Google apps are generally safe, if u notice something suspicious just report it and if something is found it will be removed.
I generally don't worry about information being stolen, i dont do internet banking on my phone, it's just contacts and sms and emails.
Dont do warez or install from unknown sources, if you're worried stick to stock.

question is: if some controlls access to my phone, will he be able to get to my pc when connected?

There was a case when a bad app from China was installing a autorun script with executable that compromised your PC. Again, requires user action to do this- will not happen w/o you first doing something
i wouldve thought that rooting the phone makes it more difficult to get a virus, not vice versa- course i don't know much about it all
rooting alone doesnt lead to viruses I guess, but flashing an evil ROM would be a problem, my fear is just making a bridge to my pc when connected.

You are looking less at virus, and more at malware with Android. Yes it is possible, but you can limit your risks.
1) Keep your firmware as up to date as possible
2) Obtain apps and firmware from reputable sources (Official firmware repositories and Google Playstore)
3) Use common sense when installing apps, if the company looks shady, it might be.
Custom firmwares, blocking OTAs, and rooting your device increases your risks.

simply download a virus scanner like avast

The answer is yes: you cam get a virus, but if u NEVER install fake apps (no explanation needed) the possibilities are closer to zero

One more question: you've said you need a firewall, actually I don't have any but in my miui rom I can easily manage all the permissions of my applications and decide what to accept or deny is it enough to have a decent protection or you need to have a specific firewall?

It's part of the t-mobile application, and if I had to guess, part of their "diagnostics" check. I'd deny it. IIRC, their diagnostics report will shake a finger at you if you are rooted. Who cares really, but the less that app knows about wtf I am doing, the better -- IMHO.

So I have been trying to get my S6 sim unlocked and it has been a nightmare. I saw this thing keep popping up in SuperSU and I finally granted it access, thinking it had something to do with the unlock app and why I couldn't get it to work. Today on the phone, a rep mentioned that he could see that I was rooted. I can only assume that this process or the My Tmobile app sent them that information. He said something about possibly not being able to return it because the warranty was void.
But if they're not going to SIM unlock my device that I paid full price for, they'd damn well better give me a refund.
If you know someone else has T-Mobile, pop their sim card in and unlock it then out yours back in.

Supposedly, that won't work, though I don't know anyone with a T-Mobile SIM to test it. I have been told that it takes up to 3 days for their system to even detect your phone, so just popping it in momentarily wouldn't even work. Besides, if you think about it, that would be way too easy. I'm sure they have some measures in place to prevent that from working.
There's a thread on here somewhere where someone had sim unlocked it already.

My post right above yours explained that...
Do this...use the Odin tar stock file, reflash phone. Don't root. Open the tmobile my account app, and make sure it is granted the rights to send tmobile info about your device etc... Then when you call them they will see the device is not rooted. Most reps won't be reading back in the notes to see the previous mention of root. Warranty will be honored.

It keeps asking for root access, because that is how they tell if you are rooted or not. If you notice in the my tmobile app if you give it root permissions it says your phone is rooted and its a risk. If you don't give it permissions it doesn't say it is rooted.

09-27-2016 ota gps fix?

Hi guys,
Woke up this morning to a T-Mobile OTA was out of it and I pressed yes and it was about 500mb.
First thing I did was test the GPS and got a very fast and accurate lock.
I usually never get a lock and its always searching.
Can anyone confirm.
Thanks!!
no updates here .
Is there any way I can tell which update it was?
GPS seems to be running fine since I updated.
No updates here either. Wish there was though, I hate the GPS on this phone.
I'm about to update soon, no show of what it really does, it's a hefty update for sure half a gb, has to be good update, wish it were nougat though lol.
I see the update here, but I'm rooted running custom theme, etc. Can anyone who's installed the update confirm that it didn't mess with root?

Mine isn't locking on my actual location but, close.
On the plus side it was super fast to get my approximate location and lock lol.

Did nothing for GPS
Hey y'all.....what should my current versions say? I just got the phone today after taking back my S6 Edge that I had gotten the other day, and unlike the S6 Edges million updates, I received none when I set this phone up. Idk how that's possible if its a new phone. In suspecting they gave me a refurbished phone.
