What is this folder called 'system_root' in my root directory? - Google Pixel Questions & Answers

It seems to be a carbon copy of my actual root directory. Some folders, like /data, are completely empty while others have files in them. The 'system_root' folder is around 4.18 GB in size.

Go read chainfires post on his g+ about how systemless root works. It tells you everything you need to know.

Getting files onto the root of the drive

I'm trying to install cyanogenmod on my G Tablet, but I can't figure out how to get files onto the root of the drive, specifically the update.zip and recovery folder.
I've successfully rooted it using z4root, thinking that would give me root access to the files - but not so...
So, I'm at an impasse. I can't move files from the sdcard folder, nor the sdcard2 folder into the root folder.
How can I get the needed files there?
Thanks!
they need to be in sdcard not root. at least it is where mine go
edit not sure with cyanogen. you may need a different file manager to place them in the root directory
try using ghost commander, it lets me move files around. otherwise plug it into a pc and move the files that way?

Ghost Commander is giving me the error, "File not accessible" when trying to copy it from sdcard to / (I assume this is the same as the linux filesystem?)
Edit: I've gotten it to give me root access, I'm just having trouble getting files to transfer now. It tells me that things transfer, but I'm not seeing them in the file system. I'll keep messing with it though.

You only need to put the update zip file on the main directory ( /sdcard ) not the root directory which is just ( / )
Then flash the update zip via recovery mode.
Be sure to wipe data and cache first if you are flashing over another rom, which it sounds like you are.

I just figured that out And this is my very first flash, so I'm entirely inexperienced with this.
I've just done the update.zip portion, now I'm moving onto the next step as detailed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245
I was originally just going to flash with ROM Manager, but it force closes when I open it now, so I'll just follow this guide.

Attached Google Talk files that worked for me (from TouchWiz 1.0.2 ROM). Put the lib file into /system/lib and the apk into /system/app. Change perms to 744.

I am trying to follow these instructions however I can not find the /system/lib and /system/app folders. The Google Talk stock app vanished when I flashed TCP's rom on the phone, so I am trying to reinstall it this way, since it is not on the market.
Where are these files usually located? Do I need to format my files differently or something?
/system/app
/system/lib
ANYTHING that is not /mnt/sdcard (/sdcard) or /ext-sd requires ROOT access and an app that will look at ROOT
ES File explorer or root explorer
you WILL NOT see these folders by just plugging into your computer, nor will you see it with basic file managers

Ok i downloaded ASTRO file manager, but when i try to paste into the app folder it gives me an error message that I have a read only file system...
Make sure you have r/o where it says r/o or r/w. this way you can paste it.

I know I'm VERY! late with this answer, but I have to correct you. With zArchiver (file-explorer and zip/7-zip app) you can access androids system folders. On a S III mini I can copy the ringtones/notification-sounds or the start sound( on the micro-SD-card for example). It is possible to copy other files too, but that didn't make any sense for me. btw: phone is not rooted.
P.S. Also worked on a non-rooted Huawei Y 625 @ Android 4.4.2 . Of course I can not copy files INTO the system folder(s) but read-acces is definitely possible without root permissions.
Greetz HiddenAssassin2306
Access to /data is forbidden in Android unless you have root access.
/system is read only, and limited.
My quote from above did say you wouldn't see any of these from a computer. And the OP was trying to place files in /system, which is read only.
Is there some reason you felt the need to bring up a 3 year old thread to say I'm wrong, when in this thread, regarding the original post, I am 100% correct?

[Q] Files copied back to Download do not show up

Hello,
After backing up my phone and flashing the final 5.0, I copied the files in "Download" back to my phone. Strangely I cannot see them when I open Download from apps. With a file explorer I can see them though I've downloaded some stuff and those are visible together with the copied files with a file explorer, so the path must be right.
Do I have to do some operation in order to have everything accessible from Downloads? I feel very noob...
The download app only sees files that IT downloaded. When you wipe, download app will only see new downloads. Not files already in the folder.

I did it earlier, have to be rooted to see the file that's downloaded. If you're using a root explorer search for "dlpkgfile" that's the name of the newest OTA at least, I made a copy on my SD card so I could keep putting it in the right dir and avoid downloading it all over again. Since I tried all my options i'm back to unrooted, still can't upgrade from g to o.
I don't remember the exact directory, somewhere in /etc/ if I recall.

I'm having the same issue with upgrading 10G. maybe there is a way in the ota Package
EDIT:
I found this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2699123 to force an update using the dlpkgfile from ota. I wonder if it could work for G4 also??
@TheJokah @ajent. Don't need to be rooted. Root Browser will be able to view the directory without root permissions. (I use it all the time to browse system partitions and files on unrooted devices). You can do a lot with Root Browser without root. You just can't make changes.
When the fota is available you will find it in /cache/fota
I have captured several OTAs for various devices this way...
EDIT: Make sure to copy the file after it downloads and before restart, otherwise the file will be deleted before you get it.
That is good info, thanks.
I'm pretty convinced flashfire installing the xposed zip does something that isn't reverted when flashing the unrooted system image. I used my limited knowledge to look at that xposed zip and it seems like only modifications are made to /system so it should be removed when flashing back unrooted image. I really don't know, but hope somebody can figure it out lol.

When you say root directory, where do you mean? It should be at "/storage/emulated/0" (sometimes shown as "/sdcard", depending on the app or context).
