compatibility (sgh-t779 > gt-p51xx) - Galaxy Tab 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So prior to bricking my tablet by trial and (probably error), can anyone PLEASE tell me what ROM types are compatible with my device?
I see there is no specific development for the SGH-T779 (the device in question). Does this mean there are absolutely no compatible roms for my tablet?
What custom recoveries can be flashed?
Am I able to flash any GT-51xx roms?
Root was obtainable, but I can't even seem to get any information after scouring.
Please help!

You'll want to click the big yellow tab at the top of this page: "Device by OS or Manufacturer." Drill down to find your device. As kwkbnk said, the root and the ROM will depend on that device specifically. Once you get to the Developer's forum for your device, you'll discover whether anyone's found a way to put ICS on it.

Most often NO....every device is different even the variants of same model have different hardware flashing may lead to a possible brick so never try unless the developer or other users specifically mention your device....In your case no is the answer
ok thank you for the aswer

thanks for that great help
If there are English recoveries out there, just flash one over your existing one. I think that's the best advice you'll get without us knowing what device you have.

htc one x clone
android version 4.1.9
baseband 4.0
kernel 1.28.708.10
build 4.12
custom build htcextention-403-1-ga-7
thanks for a decent reply and i hope this will help you to help me
many thanks
Ah. If it's a clone, that's gonna be harder, as there's no way to know beforehand that a certain custom recovery .img will work. I think you have 3 choices:
Find out from someone else who has your same device
Try flashing a custom recovery designed for another device (such as the real HTC One X)
Stay with what you've got
If you choose #2, the changes could be irrecoverable. That's just part of the deal when you buy a clone, unfortunately.

First, no you do not need a custom kernel to root, however using a custom kernel can provide benefits such as better performance/battery life and added features like superior audio controls etc. A notable kernel for the Galaxy series is the "Siyah Kernel" but it's up to you, personaly I choose not to after issues in past like higher temps
Odin is the tool used to flash software to your device, this is used to flash custom recoveries, kernels and the stock firmware
Superuser is the app used to control permissions to each individual app on your rooted phone, this prevents apps gaining root that you would prefer not to.
Finally, I have rooted an S2 back when I started out with devices. It's fairly painless and has many benefits but I prefer custom ROMs as well as rooting
Hope I could help, however these answers were available elsewhere after looking for a while which is suggested before posting to avoid duplicates when possible

It's very simple.
Do a google search for:
"Custom ROMs for (your model number)"
If that doesn't give you any good links to follow then there aren't any ROMs for your model number. Its possible that your device is the same as another device and that you could use its ROMs but you'd have to research, compare the devices and ask experienced members that own both of the devices you're comparing if they can use the same ROMs.
If you don't find anything, the next option is to port a ROM from a similar device to work on yours, you can find guides for learning how to port ROMs, there are many guides all over Google.
