System Apps - VZW/Verizon apps... - Google Pixel Questions & Answers

Got my pixel yesterday, UK based from a reputable UK retailer.
I was looking through the list of apps including system apps and came across various VZW and Verizon apps in there.
Is this how it should be? I'm assuming it's normal?

I am rooted, I delete all VZW and sprint apk's with no ill effects on stock or custom roms.
If using my backup pro or tibu you may freeze them also, I choose to delete.
Yes, it is normal to see this, using Verizon or Sprint sim card they will become "active"

That's alright then. Was just checking this was normal for a UK/International Pixel

Can confirm, I have those apps too even though I bought my Pixel unlocked from Google. As others have said, I guess these apps become active once you insert a Verizon sim.

"Non-VZW" Device & No Service

As of approximately 12:00PM today I cannot get service on my rooted SG3 running the stock rom. After going to the Verizon website, it shows the device as being "non-vzw"...All other devices on the plan work fine. The only major system modification I have made is that I disabled OTA updates.

Is it possible that Verizon is blocking rooted devices from their network?

I went to the Verizon store and got a new SIM card, but I still can't get service for my phone. After some investigation, it appears my ESN/MEID is corrupted (reads B000000). I have read that this can be caused by a bad flash. Does anyone have any experience regarding ESN corruption?

How to get Isis working with root?

Ok, I rooted my GS3 a few weeks ago and now my Isis wallet won't work. it gives me an error stating that my phone is rooted. I think it has to do with superSU being installed on the internal memory. Someone told me to uninstall SU and then reinstall onto the SD card and it would work. I tried that and ended up having to flash a back up, then re-flashing the Rom. I don't really want to screw this up again but I really need to get Isis working. Please help.

Most XDA users that live in locations that ISIS is active (such as SLC) are boycotting the service because scumbag VZW blocked GWallet. It would be easier to load Wallet on your rooted phone.

Thats about right, I live in SLC and refuse to let ISIS anywhere near my phone. Not even when they had the promotion that was basically free public transportation when using ISIS to pay.
Isis is active everywhere, i live it in nj and used it all the time before root. I wish someone could get both google wallet and isis working on verizon galaxy s3.

I highly doubt you will ever find a solution to this. As I stated before, Verizon blocking Google Wallet ticked off most potential isis users. Anyway, good luck with finding a fix.

[Q] Wallet on T-Mobile Nexus 5

so if you buy a unlocked Nexus 5 from google play and have a t-mobile sim and service will you be able to use Google wallet?

You will be able to use Google Wallet with any carrier with the Nexus 5. The issue before was carrier issued phones like the SG3 were sometimes prevented from properly using Google wallet. Verizon is a good example, they wanted to create their own "wallet" like app, so they disabled you from downloading Google Wallet from the Play store.
so you're saying tap and pay would work just fine on a nexus 5 on T-mobile's network?
I thought T-mobile was blocking its use, therefore you had to modify build.prop and/or go thru other monkey-motions (wallet installer, etc) to get it to work. I'm currently on vzw with a GS3 and have to do all the nonsense to get tap and pay to work. I know the latest version will work on any carrier but tap and pay will not (unless you modify things to make it work)

A 100% unlocked phone directly from google will not gain or lose any functionality just because you pop a sim card in it. Tap and pay will work. I use it all the time on my Nexus 4, and it worked fine on T-Mobile back then, works fine on Aio right now.
Check T-Mobile's coverage in your area, if you live in a pretty dense city/outskirt area, their coverage is usually good. If you're in a smaller town or country side, good luck. Talk to people you know, check coverage maps. Look at Net10, Aio Wireless, and Straight Talk as options too. They all run off the AT&T network. You'll probably have better luck going with a carrier that piggybacks off a real nationwide coverage carrier like AT&T.
This answered my question. Getting a N5 and going to be using ATT sim. I figured it would work being a 100% unlocked phone. Just didn't know if they could enable some block by an att Sim being installed. I guess that sounds silly after typing it out. Lol

Running on Tmobile and it works.
I've used tap and play with Google wallet a few times now with no issues on T-Mobile.
Used mine yesterday at McDonald's, usually I'd have the app opens and with my pin entered. Yesterday I just turned my screen on and tapped it and the payment went through. I was it bit surprised that it didn't ask me for my pin but then I found out it was set to a 1-day timeout.
I have tried using tap to pay with eport vending machines and also at McDonalds. Google wallet always says the status of the transaction is unknown and to ask cashier. The vending machine will say, "sorry, unable to authorize," even after entering my pin and tapping again. I've tried two credit cards. Shouldn't google wallet work without rooting the phone?

Freedompop Nexus 5 and ROMs

I just got the refurbished Nexus 5 for freedompop through the stacksocial promo. Very good deal (unlimited talk, text and 500 mb LTE data/month, all free for a year). The device came with a very minimal install of android 5.1. Given the fact that the device has a special dialer and sms program (since everything goes over the data network), I was wondering what the options were for updating to 5.1.1 (stock vs other CM based roms).
Help appreciated.
I would be interested in the answer to this too. This sounds like a great way to stay contract free when I return to the States. Maybe look in to how you get the service working on a BYOD phone?
this the 199 deal? I was thinking of picking this up and just cancelling the service to have a spare 5 lying around

The phone is a refurbished b stock. Mine was in great shape except a small nick on the right side. So I cannot complain. The bootloader comes unlocked and there is a superuser zip on the phone so all you have to do is flash a custom recovery to flash that zip. Now I have to figure out whether I can put custom roms on this puppy.

Since it's the N5 it shouldn't be a problem for recoveries or anything rom related. They may have filled it with there own bloatware but it will work regardless

The issue is that since this phone operates solely over voip and data for messaging the normal dialer and messaging app is deleted and it has its own freedom pop dialer and messaging app.. I am not sure how integrated the whole freedom pop stuff into the system is.. I don't want to install a different rom and break the integration.

This is the promo I got for my sister. Is this VOIP the same thing as Freedompop 4G LTE? I thought FreedomPop was piggybacking on Sprint's cell network.
It does run on the sprint's LTE network but the sms and talk goes over the data network rather than the regular sprint network. So for all intents and purposes it is a VOIP phone with sprint reception. If you don't have LTE reception, the voice and sms parts don't work either.
I also took advantage of this incredible deal.
However I've had quite a few freezes with the ROM it's running.
It seemed just like Stock, however looking around I've noticed they've tweaked Stock quite a bit.
One of the most significant (and surprising) tweaks was the inclusion of Ambient Display.
I'm about to flash some ROMs and see how it works. Update this later.
Hmm. I had no issues with the rom itself. I think it is running very smoothly. I did root it though

Does this mean the 500MB free data will be used up as it's being used for calls and text? Sorry for the noob questions but I've never used VoIP before, like ever. My sister surprisingly isn't into social networking but she only texts with her best friends the most.
I know you probably don't know but if I flash CM12 on it would FreedomPop not work?

I was wondering could someone post the freedompop zip that came on the phone? I foolishly deleted mine but I'd like to experiment with it now.
So I installed a recovery by simply flashing it since its already bootloader unlocked, obtained root and everything works. also made a backup just in case.
I went through the freedom pop rom on the phone and it has the apk files for phone and messaging. you can also pull them from the app store.
Im gonna flash a custom rom and then install the apk's. It should work and I could always set freedompop apps as the default dialer.

I flashed both Stock and CM but neither even recognized the Freedompop SIM card.
Guess we have to stay on their ROM if we want to use their service.
I also got the deal from freedom pop though I'm now regretting it as I'm reading this whole issue about the messaging app.... especially the fact that it's only a voip service being used, might as well use hangouts then!
Besides that, how good is the overall condition of your devices? I got tricked into thinking it was a genuinely "new" nexus 5 by pocketnow, nowhere did it read refurbished or "pre owned" until I got the email from freedompop.

It's strange that a ROM would be the reason for a SIM to work. Maybe it's using specific modems we're not aware of? The zip file in the phone seems to be the ROM. I had to unlock the bootloader, it didn't come with TWRP as others have claimed, to root it and installed TWRP to make a nandroid backup. I might take a chance with CM12 later today.

Zero difference in software until you put a Verizon SIM in it. Then it downloads the VZ software. Google version does the same.
But after you let a VZ update to 7.1.1 you can no longer unlock the bootloader.
Sent from my Pixel XL using XDA Labs
To clarify @TonikJDK 's response, if you have a Verizon Pixel and it has a 7.1.0 build on it such as NDE63X, and if you put a non-Verizon SIM in, the phone then "updates" to the latest non-Verizon Pixel build, which at that time would've been NDE63V, and which would then not have the Verizon apps included.
Likewise, if you had the Google Edition on NDE63V, it was reported that if you put a Verizon SIM in, it would "update" to the latest Verizon image (again, at that time NDE63X). I can personally attest to this because I have a Verizon Pixel and I happened to 1. unlock my bootloader using DePixel8, 2. I flashed the NDE63V non-Verizon image, and 3. Re-inserted my Verizon SIM (which I'm actually using in an HTC 10 right now) and I mistook an update that was offered shortly after as being 7.1.1, but instead it was NDE63X, the Verizon build. I ended up taking the SIM back out and reflashing NDE63V, which has since updated to NMF26O and then NMF26Q.
One question I've been wondering about and haven't noticed if it's been addressed anywhere, the 7.1.1 builds are all the same for Verizon and non-Verizon. They're all NMF26O for the first release of 7.1.1 and NMF26Q for the second OTA of it.
So I'm wondering if putting a Verizon SIM in does anything anymore if you're on a stock 7.1.1 image. I could relatively easily find out, but it's not a huge priority.
Also, as long as you already unlocked the bootloader, nothing will re-lock it, even Verizon OTAs, unless you manually do so.
No idea if there'll be Verizon-specific builds again later.
Edit: Might soon find out, reportedly there's a new update for Verizon soon: NMF26U. It's not on Google's page, at least yet. http://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel/how-to/verizon-update-nmf26u-t3527199/post70281819#post70281819

You get the Verizon OTAs if you don't disable the option for automatic updates, but there's nothing screwing about it. The Google Play Pixel can be unlocked at any time so you can do anything you want to your phone. The only people screwed are those who are on 7.1.1 on a Verizon Pixel with a locked bootloader.

That being said, when I first boot up my new Pixel XL 128 on Verizon, I need to immediately go to developer options and shut down auto updates. I'm assuming I'll have to activate developer mode with the multiple taps one the build or something like that in ABOUT.
They pre-installed a SIM. So, I assume I'll have to rush to developer mode before it connects to Verizon. Although, I think I may have to call Verizon to activate the new SIM first.
Am I on the right track to avoid having bootloader locked?

Just setup 2 phones without updating from current version (7.1) by using the remove SIM/Bypass WiFi method. Updated them directly to 7.1.1 NMF26O and activated. Was done last night, and haven't had and VZW apps pushed to this point. Both rooted with TWRP RC1. Wonder if the newest build will push the apps. For my first Pixel, I had dropped down X and allow VZW to push out apps, the side loaded up to NMF26O. Either way, all 3 pixels work flawlessly.

Hi, how's it going?
NMF26O and NMF26Q are used by both Google and Verizon, whereas there were Verizon-specific builds before NMF26O. It's rumored Verizon is going to have a NMF26U, and I have no idea if Google will have the same one or if Verizon's will once again be different than Google's. Also, if you have automatic updates turned off for OTAs in Developer Options, nothing will be forced on you. If NMF26U or a later build will be Verizon only, you could get OTA prompts unless you have that disabled.

Going well "old" friend! Made the jump to the VZW variant while the jumping was good. FREE was a good price.
Spot on with the latest builds. I have APK backups of the VZW apps and can always add them into the other 2 phones, if needed.
Just fyi when I bought mine from Verizon it had 7.1. On it. I put SIM in it. I just made sure i didn't hit the new software update. I didn't have any problems. But it would be really easy to accidentally hit that update button
