[Completed] Detailed Description of ODIN (which buttons to use) - XDA Assist

I done quite a bit of research on how/when to use ODIN and I've successfully flashed stock Samsung ROMs (following step-by-step guides). What I am having trouble finding is what's the specific purpose of each button. Some guides suggest using the Bootloader button (BL) while other suggest AP. The guides I could find on XDA are pretty old and the information (and options in ODIN) have changed.
Would someone kindly share what each button and checkbox are used for and why?

[Q] Installing a new ROM for the first time...?

Hi everybody, first post on this forum!
I'm sitting here with a GT-I7100 and was reading alot about the ARHD 9.2 ROM, which I'd like to try. However, I feel like I've entered a giant jungle with only a little nail scissor as my only tool. I've read countless of threads regarding bricking and only god knows what. I'm still convinced (bricking aside) I'd like to install a new ROM, and the ARHD 9.2 install instructions (found here) are extremely easy to follow. I am now wondering if it really is this easy, or if every single ROM developer on this forum expects you to have some software already installed on the phone for a ROM flash to succeed?
I'm at the moment running the stock software as configured by Samsung out of the box. Are there any steps I have to take before following the (oh so easy) install instructions found in the ARHD 9.2 thread? If so, where can I read more about them - and are there any guides with simple step-by-step instructions which explanes each and every step? The amount of terms I've found on these forums are overwhelming, and I therefore feel the need for a thread like this.
EDIT:
After even more reserach, I've managed to convert all of the above to a few steps, which I hope are correct.
1) ROOT using CF-Auto-Root (thread instructions here)
2) Install ClockwokMod ROM Manager and then let it flash Clockwork Mod Recovery by itself)
3) Backup current ROM using CWM and then continue to follow the instructions found in the ARHD 9.2 thread.
4) Install Triangle Away to reset the flash number.
5) Have fun!
Is it this "simple" or are there steps I've missed, still? Please tell me, since i'm not sure about this one, really.
Also, do you still need to root the phone using step 1) or will CWM do it for you aswell?
NEW EDIT:
Found this thread which explains all required steps in detail.
This thread can therefore be closed, thanks.

I have successfully rooted two devices using xda forums. Just make sure you read on past the tutorials. Most of the time you will find valuable information on what errors other users encountered and so on. Once you start flashing rom's it's hard to stop.
Recently purchased a tablet and looking for rooting and mod, thanks
No neee to worry... simply keep backup everytime...

[Completed] SGH-i337m problems

So a few days ago i downloaded a rom for my Telus SGH-i337m which gave me apps and the features from the S5. I installed it and all that, but then it failed. So i tried to use my back up but it was corrupted as well. So I thought i can go online and find a stock image, i found many, but then I think i installed the image for a GT505 by accident. This gave me my software back but then i could't use my wifi or my data. So i found a proper SGH-i337m rom and installed it, my wifi came back but my data didnt. I thought it was because of the wrong modem, so i installed a few different modems and nothing worked. But today when i downloaded a different modem and installed it using odin mobile pro. It was installing and it rebooted, but then it got stuck there with the ODIN logo. I removed the battery and turned the phone on but not it says "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue..... please connect to kies". I tried that but my phone doesnt connect to the computer. HELPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You were on the right track until the phone got stuck. No worries, we will have you sorted out and on happy path.
First off pull the battery then while pressing Volume Down +Home+Power. Keep on pressing the buttons until you see Downloading Screen. This is called the Download Mode on your phone.
Next, please download PC Version of the Odin making sure the version is 3.07 or higher. Remove Kies or Odin won't connect to the phone. Also download the correct STOCK firmware for your phone. You can flash it via Odin on PC. Here are a few threads that will help you in this direction.
I believe that's a AT&T variant of Galaxy S4. So this thread [INDEX] All things AT&T MK2, NB1, and NC1 (including ROMs) should help. That forum also covers Canadian Variants of S4 as well just so you are aware.
Lastly, please feel free to post in [GUIDE][INFO] The beginner's info thread (aka. the noob helper)
if you find yourself still stuck.
which section do i put the .md5 file under in ODIN? i tried in AP but it failed

[Completed] [Q] Rooting GT-I9500 with baseband version I9500XXUGNF6 Problems

Hi, I am having problems in rooting my S4 I9500 with baseband I9500XXUGNF6. I have tried Kinggo, iRoot, and Oddin to root my phone, but all have failed. I have attached a screen shot of my phones specs.
Can anyone help me in finding a solution to my problem, so that I can get my phone rooted. Thank you
Hi,

I followed the instructions to the letter in the link you provided. However, it never worked. I failed to get it to load into the Philz recovery mode. I tried half a dozen times and still failed. I did a lot of googling and finally discovered why I was failing to root my S4. My S4 came with something called Knox preinstalled. Along the way, Knox had been compromised and had gone from 0x0 to 0x1.
I did a lot more googling, and I found the following link helpful: http://forums.androidcentral.com/samsung-safe-knox/366118-solution-how-permanently-remove-knox.html
So for those who may have a similar problem to mine, this is what I did. I downloaded the CF-Auto-Root from http://download.chainfire.eu/326/CF-Root1/CF-Auto-Root-ja3g-ja3gxx-gti9500.zip?retrieve_file=1
I then extracted the contents from the zip file and used the Odin3-v3.07 that came with the zip file, to root my phone using the CF-Auto-Root-ja3g-ja3gxx-gti9500.tar.md5 file.
After doing its thing, it restarted my phone and auto rooted my phone before re-booting again. I now had a rooted phone, and I was then able to follow the rest of the instructions given in the first link I shared above to permanently remove Knox from my phone.
I hope this will be of help to others, and would love to hear of any other success stories like mine.

[Completed] [Q][How-To] Trying to root Galaxy S5A G870F

Hello,
first things first I am a total noob at this and simply don't know what to do. I did some research about on how to root my phone but after looking at the posts and other stuff I am more confused and lost on what to do. I found the following posts:
1) http://primehowto.com/root-samsung-galaxy-s5-active-sm-g870f-easy-guide/
2) http://forum.xda-developers.com/att-galaxy-s5/general/how-to-root-g870aucu1ang3-gs5-active-t2868776
3) http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/help/root-s5-active-european-sm-g870f-t2957117
But after I read all of them I was more lost than before. Lets start with post number 1. I found a lot of similar posts to this one but they almost always mentioned "Steps to Root Galaxy S5 Running on Android 4.4.2 KitKat Firmware". By this point I should mention that my phone is running on 5.0 Lollipop. What I don't get is if my phone needs to have 4.4.2 KitKat to be successfully rooted or not. Post number 2. I later figured out why this process wouldn't work. It's because my phone model is not the same (laugh all you want but I did tell you I am a noob at this stuff). Post number 3. This one is similar to post 2 but it has following steps:

1. Take the NG3 OTA update.
2. Download and install Towelroot-v3.apk(this version does not require internet access).
3. Place your phone into "Download Mode" (press and hold the Home, Volume Down, and Power keys until the phone powers on and displays warning screen, then press Volume Up key).
4. Flash the G870A_NE4_Stock_Kernel using Odin's PDA slot(AP in Odin v3.09+). (This step wouldn't work because the phone models are not the same. I at least did figure that on my own.)
5. Root using Towelroot. (Turn the phone on and run the app? And then proceed to step 6?)
6. Power off then boot into "Download Mode" again. (What comes after?)
7. Download attached SM-G870F kernel (NJ4) (Should this and the next step be in place of step 4?)
8. Flash the SM-G870F NJ4 kernel using Odin's PDA slot(AP in Odin v3.09+) and restart your phone
Bolded questions next to the steps are mine and not by the author.
If you could help me with this I would be really grateful cause I'm really interested in rooting my phone but I don't want to brick it. And you wouldn't only help me but also other people in the same position as me and for the future reference.

Hello,
None of that will work on your device because you have 5.0
Do a google search for "how to root Galaxy S5A G870F lollipop 5.0"
That should give you results for any working methods for your device. Good luck.
Yeah i did but there were only this kind of roots for my phone

Try the universal rooting apps for android or the universal android rooting tools for PC. A Goole search will give you a lot of universal methods, try as many different universal rooting tools as you can, one of them might work. The universal tools and apps I'm talking about are known for rooting more than one kind of device.
Also, the towelroot mentioned in your post, if you tap.the red lambda symbol it will open a menu that has values that you can change, try different combinations of values, you can do some Google searching for the commonly used values that are known to root various devices. Try as many combinations as you can until you've tried all the possible combinations, after changing values just go back and tap the "make it rain" button, if it doesn't work then go back and change the values to another combination and try again until you've tried them all.
Ok i will try that. I'll let you know if i succeed.

I Cannot, For The Life Of Me, Find Help

I followed a guide step by step I found on this site to root my Samsung Galaxy S5 Neo SM-G903W. My phone is currently stuck with a 'RECOVERY IS NOT SEANDROID ENFORCING' message. I've no idea where to find the proper root file (the one I chose, to the best of my knowledge, is the one I needed). I can't boot into recovery mode. I don't know what to do, I'm desperate. Can someone please help me fix my phone to be either rooted or just back to normal?

Hello and welcome to xda-assist,
we actually don't do technical support, we're here to guide you to the most suitable board on xda, unfortunately the phone you're using has no specific device Forum, make sure you give proper information, lots of important information is missing, like what guide (link?), what root method (PC /Odin?), what root file..
https://forum.xda-developers.com/general/general/guide-how-to-question-t3464199
Correct approach is normally to flash a custom recovery with Odin and then flash supersu zip out of your (new) custom recovery or use CF AutoRoot which automates the process, i wouldn't suggest any kingroot, framaroot, towelroot, etc. Apps.. Unfortunately a device specific forum isn't available..
Check post 3 from this thread if you are on Android Marshmallow
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/general/how-to-t3298654
For lollipop
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/general/galaxy-s5-neo-sm-g903f-rooted-chainfire-t3280067 (users reported that the g903f file works for g903w too)
Read carefully and use search function of this linked threads..
For returning to stock do a Google search for "return to stock g903w" or use Samsung Smart Switch on your PC.
