Nexus Soft? brick - multirom - no adb/fastboot possible - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
unfortunately I can not report details but today there was an error not finding a /system partition in TWRP recovery. I tried to re-install the lineage-nightly build (01/24/17) which worked before but after that I could not boot the os anymore.
When I reboot I see the Google screen and then the multirom screen for a short while but neither the internal rom nor the others are booting. I can select the menu option to reboot to the bootloader or enter the bootloader by pressing power and volume keys. But I can see the screen for only one second and quickly try to select options without effect before the phone tries to boot again.
The command line program: "adb wait-for-device can not find the device doesn't detect the phone during that time.
Can somebody help?
Thanks

try flashing factory images through fastboot

Sounds like the phone could have the dreaded power button problem.

Thank you very much for your replies.
The problem is that the fastboot mode only shows up for a very short time. I can select the options with the volume keys but when I want to confirm with the power button, the phone already reboots.
I can also enter the multirom menu and select options on the touchscreen but short after it reboots again.
So maybe it really is a hardware issue, although I find the button presses like before.
This means I have to open and clean if not manipulations at the button are helpful.
Next I will try to boot from multirom menu over otg/usb to save stored data.
Is there another way if that fails?
Thanks again

Thank you audit13! That was it, the power button Problem.
I repeated sliding over the power button for several times and was able to get back the correct function.

Open the phone and gently clean around the power button with pure isopropyl alcohol.. After using the alcohol, firmly press and release the power button several times in a row and then try to boot the phone.
Edit: Glad you got it working:good:

[Q] Hard Reset

Guys,
I've tried various searches but I can't come up with an answer that works for me.
When attempting a factory/hardware reset one has two choices:
1. Use the software option.
2. Hardware option using button presses.
I'm looking for a procedure to execute option 2. I can get into the bootloader (Vol Up + Power).
Once in the bootloader, I can navigate to the "Recovery" option but once selected my NS doesn't appear to do anything, it just sits there with an "!" inside a triangle and the little android-droid on the screen.
I doesn't move from there no matter how long I leave it and there are no prompts/confirmations.
Once in that state, if I remove the battery and the reboot the phone boots up as if nothing happened...everything is still there, all my accounts still work etc. Basically the actions had no effect.
Does anyone know how to factory reset the device properly? My device non-root btw.
TIA,
Syphon.
I think, for the stock recovery, once you get the ! in the triangle you need to press or hold volume-up and power button again, then it will take you to recovery.
Ah cool.
Thanks for the tip, I will remember that for the next time I need to do it!!

On my phone, after 2.3.1, it's power button first, then while holding it, volume up, and only while the box dumping an arrow onto the little android is showing (maybe a second or so). Once the "!" in a triangle is showing, no key combo will get my phone into recovery. Timing is critical. Took me a few tries and a few helpful posts here to get it right.
Oh, also, you can do the ULTIMATE factory reset on this device by doing a "fastboot oem unlock" on the device (then relock it with "fastboot oem lock"). This wipes the sd card as well as the personal data in the rom space.
Awesome, thanks for all the information guys. Much appreciated.

SORRY FOR BAD LANGUAGE...but i really realy realy need help

hi all,
heres the deal. i rooted my defy with superoneclick, it worked great.
heres the problem and what i think is the cause but i need a solution!
PROBLEM: i switch my phone on, it starts normally
motoblur screen
then
T mobile screen
then
the normal swipe unlock
i ulnlock it fine but as soon as i do the wallpaper dissapears/goes black. i cannot access any apps. none of the buttons work (menu,home,return/back,search) but the info bar/ menur bar thing at the top that swipes down works fine and what ever is in it works fine i.e when i plug into usb im able to choose portal and tools and those other 3. but when i just leave my phone on lock then press power button/activate unlock screen. it will show normal background with time and everything looks normal.
the CAUSE ( i think )
i was installing apps and deleting motoblur stuff. but it it was one of those two, i isntalled an app and i deleted a file at the same sort of time. the app installed was some startup app killer or a firewall of some type. or it could have been that i deleted an apk file that had a real short name i think, like blur.apk
PLEASE HELP ME. I need a solution FAST its my first smartphone ever and i paid alot for it. if you need my phone info it was
moto defy android 2.1 uk version but then rooted with super one click
THANK YOU IN ADVANCED FOR ANY HELP
ps i have installed rsd lite and it is recognised by it but thats as far as i know what to do...

i sent you a pm too. thanks for being so quick to reply. but i dont know how to do that stuff im a noob this is my first androidsmartphone ever but im a very quick learner
all good. For my phone. ( droid incred.) when the phone is off i hold power and the volume up key. then i select recovery using the volume keys. I know the buttons to push are different on some phones so you might neeed to use google to find the right 2 keys to hold down while booting
i currently have it in boot loader mode, it says battery ok, ok to program, transfer mode, usb. and thats all it says. no recovery options at all
Ok, found this in another forum. this is how to get into your boot menu i guess:
The boot menu happends when you press the volume down key and the power button.
When it takes you to the triangle part press the volume up key and the power button this action brings up another menu on which you can reboot and other settings.
the first triangle with exclamation mark inside it with the lil andorid man comes up, but the second menu doesnt, im holding vol down and power to get up this image, the to get second one you say to do vol up and power...i tried it, held it for a while but still no joy
ok, give this a try
"If you swipe the bottom right corner when you see the triangle you will get a menu. From there you can reboot or reset"
Still looking for more
nope sorry still dont work. i really appreciate you spending your time doing this it realy does mean ALOT. thank you i hope the solution isnt far away!
Ok, this is from the t-moble forms:
One suggestion...
Pull the battery.
Hold down the volume down key and press the power button.
Continue to hold the volume down key until you seem something happening on the screen.
This should boot you into recovery mode, you'll see a little green Android stood next to a yellow warning sign.
Press the bottom-right corner of the screen, a menu should appear.
Use the volume keys to scroll up and down.
Scroll to 'Wipe DATA/factory reset' and press 'ok' (bottom-left of screen) - you may need to re-confirm in a sub-menu.
After the wipe completes, scroll to the 'reboot' option and press 'ok'.
If you do that, you completely wipe the handset, same as if you performed a full factory reset on the handset.
Obviously, this will get rid of anything you have on the handset but if your only other option is an exchange, you've nothing to lose really.

it says it worked that it did the reset properly but still same original problem.
it says first line....
E:cant open /cache/recovery/command
that is in the recovery mode / reset
do you have a rom that you can try to flash? any rom really just to rule out a rom issue. you can try to find a rom here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=855&order=desc&page=1
im going to give it a try ill get back to you to let you know how its going within the next 20 mins, thanks for all your help
here is an option for a factory reset.
1. Turn the power off on the Defy (if it's frozen, pull the battery out & reinsert it)
2.Hold the volume down button
3. Press and hold the button until the device turns on
4. You'll get a menu that allows FASTBOOK, RECOVERY, CLEAR STORAGE, and SIMLOCK
5. Select CLEAR STORAGE, by pressing the Volume Down button
6. Press and release the Power
7. Now just confirm your decision Volume Up for YES, Volume Down for NO
it says on rsd lite . fail flashing process. unable to retrieve initialization values from INI (0x07029);phone connected
isnt working for some reason
that menu...mine says
from top to bottom
Android system recovery <2a>
reboot system now
apply sdcard:update
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
(then at the bottomit says...)
E:cant open /cache/recovery/command.
but yet it will still go through the process like it is working but it doesnt fix it
Did you try the top option. Android system recovery <2a>
i wish i had that same phone to replicate this problem
im sorry i didnt write it clear enough the top android recovery thing isnt an option, its like the header/title for the program or page its written in red. the options to choose are in blue

[Q] Help! Can't reboot into recovery...

Hello everyone. I have Katkiss Kitkat #19 and TWRP recovery 6.something but I can't remember which. Anyway, I use to reboot into recovery by holding down the Volume down, then press Volume up when prompted to get into recovery. Now the power and volume buttons are completely busted. I can't press any of them. And I need to go into recovery to flash the new Rom.
So, here is what I tried:
1. Rom Toolbox. I tried to "Reboot into recovery" option but it just reboots the ddevice.
2. Terminal emulator: su reboot recovery, it says reboot: no such order
3. Tried to hook it to my laptop and use ADB, but no devices attached. I have Windows 8.1 64 bit. I have Android drivers installed and in the device manager it say Asus ADB and it shows Asus in the "safely remove" but I still can't see it in the My computer. I have USB debugging on and it asked me to allow my laptop keys and I agreed. Still, ADB doesn't work.
I don't know what else can I do. I can't go into recovery, bootloader or APX mode without the power and volume buttons. Is there anything i can do, or am I stuck here?
Any help will be greatly appreciated...:crying:
There's a few different apps that let you boot to recovery
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.siriusapplications.quickboot
More

When you say the power and volume buttons are completely busted, have you tried taking the plastic bezel off and pressing the micro buttons under the normal silver ones ?

I tried the first one and six from the second link and none of them work. Actually, when I was installing Xposed, I pressed reboot, but it said Reboot: No such tool. I don't know what's going on.
The problem with the power button is that my kid dropped the tablet many times and it got so many dents, so I took of the casing (or whatever it's called0 and then straightened it out, out the buttons in their places and then glued it in place. Now it's really hard to press the power button (the one underneath) but it works. But how can I do that every time I want to power off or reboot into recovery, specially if there is a boot loop. I can't do anything except pressing the power button.
That's why I wanted an easy solution at least to reboot recovery.
May be I should take off the casing one more time and try to fix the power and volume buttons one more time.
I just want to thank you for your super fast reply and taking the time to find those apps.
Thanks a lot...
In the past, while still on stock ROM,I have been using this tool to overcome the missing "reboot to recovery" option in the regular Asus power menu: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.transformer.recovery
Now I have tested it on KK #19 and this tool apparently does not reboot the tablet BUT:
when I run this tool and then reboot the tablet normally (with the power menu...) I get into recovery.
So if you are already able to reboot normally through Rom Toolbox you might try to run this one first before rebooting with Rom Toolbox.
NOTE I imagine you are perfectly aware that you are playing with fire here.
In case your tablet gets into a boot-loop while installing the new ROM, you might end up with a useless tablet. Is it really worth the risk?

OK, you did it. You got me scared, so I separated the casing in the power button part and clicked on the original button with a small screwdriver and it worked. Also the volume buttons. Now I don't know what to do. May be the buttons are broken from the inside. I'll try to see if those are sold on ebay or something. If not, I'll try to attach something to them from the underside.
Anyway, I'm really grateful that you made me take this step. I'll fix it tomorrow first thing in the morning. Well, we both know I'm not gonna sleep until I get it fixed, hahaha.
Again, thanks a lot...

[Q] Phone boots to recovery only. HELP!

Hi,
My Oneplus One boots only to the CWM recovery. I noticed that my volume down button not working. So I restarted the phone, and now it only boots to CWM only.
In the recovery, the volume down button still doesn't work. It looks like the button may be stuck? and my guess is it's initiating the volume button down + power button to boot to CWM.
But I also tested the Button Test function in CWM, and the down button doesn't even register.
Is there any way to bypass this? I don't need the volume button down to work necessarily, but I need my phone to work.
I'd appreciate if there's any other way to bypass this, or maybe modify CWM file to change the recovery button combo.
If the button is stuck, then no amount of altering CWM is going to help because you'll never be able to boot into the OS with a stuck volume button. You're going to need to physically inspect and fix that volume button. In the meantime in order to have a functional recovery, ditch CWM and flash TWRP, the UI is all touchscreen so no replying on buttons, and it's leaps and bounds better than CWM anyway.

Hey, Thanks for the reply.
I noticed a few more things, which makes me to believe that this is not a physical button problem.
First, whenever I charge the device, the device won't stay OFF. It constantly turns on automatically.
However, if I don't charge, the device will stay OFF.
Second, I can't even go to Bootloader. I tried "adb reboot bootloader" from the command prompt and the phone boots directly to CWM recovery.
Third, if the volume down button is stuck, wouldn't it be activated all the times? So when I'm in CWM, it'll constantly go down, and when I test on Button Test, it should register constantly.
But that's not happening. It's simply dead.
I'm going to try the RMA process, but meanwhile, I would be glad if someone has better idea with the new info I provided here.
Thanks
Im having the same issue did u get it fixed? plz help

Bootlop / cannot enter TWRP from Bootloader Menu / Power button stuck

Hi guys,
I currently have some issues with my beloved N5. I try to be as specific as I can (therefore the text will be a bit longer)
First things first: My device is experiencing the well known "stuck power button problem".
But I also do have problems which are not related to that one (at least thats what I believe).
Overview:
CM 13.1
ElementalX Kernel
TWRP on 3.0.20
Main issue: I can not start my phone regularly. When not plugged in, it just does not respond at all.
If it is plugged in I can get into the bootloader with only pressing Volume down (because the power button is stuck inside). Weird fact #1: in bootloader the power button should work to confirm a specific task like Start, or boot into recovery but it doesnt. Also: the phone is steady in the bootloader and does not keep rebooting.
Therefore I wanted to perform a backup (nandroid or at least all media) and reflash my ROM to see whether it is more of a software issue. I tried booting into TRWP which is not working (device shuts down after Google logo (might be because of the power button issue?).
I know that I can flash the recovery again through adb or the Nexus ToolKit but obviously I want to save my data first.
As far as I know there is no option as adb pull or through the recovery to save those only being in bootloader mode, am I right?
Question: Can I dirty flash without losing data? If thats not the cure, what else could help?
Other facts to know: while running
Code:
adb devices
I get that the
Code:
"adb server version (36) doesnt match this client (35): killing...
but then:
Code:
*daemon started successfully*
(same in Nexus Toolkit).
If I continue with
Code:
adb backup
it says: no devices / emulators found. Altough the nexus toolkit (and fastboot devices) say:
Code:
FASTBOOT: 03181238e07723e0 fastboot
If you made it until here thank you for reading :good: and I would be even more pleased if someone could help.
Best,
McRacoon
I have this problem to , i cant use my volume and power button in ROM / TWRP ,
I got lost, which data you want to save ?
fastboot flash boot recovery.img | fastboot reboot than gets you to recovery from where you can save data.
@Redchi: not really exactly my problem but if you can get into recovery you can use your touchscreen in TRWP?!
@icrunchbanger thanks for your reply.
I want to save all my data like videos, pictures, whatsapp chats etc.
I know how to flash the recovery (again). The question was whether I can save any data without a working recovery (just from the bootloader). Imo it is not possible but maybe you guys know how to do so.
If I reflash the recovery I still can not enter it as the phone reboots itself every 5 seconds due to the stuck power button. The reflashing operation is not finished (Nexus Toolkit says: "Waiting for your device" and times out after a while) and the battery icon pops up every 3 seconds.
Edit: and yes I tried several workarounds to unstuck the power button like flicking against the button, tapping on table, cleaning etc. The only thing I haven't done is tearing the motherboard apart and replacing the whole button itself.
I recommend removing the motherboard, applying pure alcohol around the area, and then quickly pressing and releasing the power button? If this doesn't work, I suggest replacing the power button.
i can use button to get bootloader + TWRP , but my Button volume up down and power cant use in Rom or TWRP, i do no this software or hardware ,? my nexus normaly use but not have button , I use mikey or double tab to wake get screen on , i use apk to get volume , sorry bad english
