LineageOS/Cyaongen installation for beginners. - General Questions and Answers

Hi,
I'd like to install LineageOS on my old Motorola G 2nd (dual sim). Mobile has a stock firmware (Android 6.0)and as far as I know it has locked bootloader. I am completely green, so I am looking how to start: what should I download, and do I need to ask Motorola to unlock bootloader first or not.

-_-
This won't work, I'm sorry. No one, will take their time to write a full guide to this. I did once and it was a huge mistake. There is an unspoken rule here at XDA, that is, that you're rooted and have knowledge enough to know how to flash a rom.

You should watch out for existing guides in the forum for your device. Also YouTube, but there you may find not the XDA quality

Help with new Texco Moto G

OK I just bought on contract a 16GB Moto G. Very happy so far. It downloaded the new 4.4.2 Kitkat. Can't see any difference.
It is locked to Tesco.
My question is, what steps do I now take to get root access and install CWM?
Do I need to unlock the phone first?
Any advantages in using one of the new Mods?
Any other advice welcome. I just know how to follow instructions...:fingers-crossed:
thanks

Already answered hundreds of times in other threads. Do some reading.
Use search. But do it in the following steps. Unlock the boot loader, then install a custom recovery, then root.

can we get our Mods to move this to the proper forum? (and also clean up some of the non development posts on this page)
Moved Here as this does not belong in the Dev Sections. Thanks.

Don't forget to thank those who made the guides.
If you ask these questions which are already answered dozens of times i recommend you to read more first before you do anything. Otherwise your next question will be how "to make a phone out ouf my brick?".
OK. Sorry. I get you guys. I just thought maybe the Tesco version might need some different approaches. Actually it is quite hard to find a simple list of "things to do" with your phone, tablet whatever or simple steps you need to follow. Of course the details are more complex. I wasn't sure if I needed to unlock the phone or could do rooting on a locked phone. Maybe each device forum category should have a simple sticky just like that for us non-techies who just follow the instructions without really understanding what is going on.
Also I was half asleep and I see there is actually an excellent introduction. Deaf, dumb and blind...

Looking in my crystall ball, I believe that it will come unlocked directly from Verizon.
No really - there isn´t even 5.0 for the other variants and thus nobody can know for sure. On the other hand 5.0 brings additional security measures, so there is no reason to believe it will be any easier to root than it was before.
And one more thing - did you see the sticker "NO QUESTIONS in This Forum"? Not only is this question pointless, but it is in the wrong forum as well...

[Q] Looking for developer edition firmwares

Hello !
I'm looking for the developer edition firmwares for 2013 Droid models (both Mini and Maxx, but hey Ultra you're welcome), flashable via RSD Lite.
I could only find the Verizon ones.
I'm even wondering if these firmwares just don't exist as I didn't find any trace ?
Thank you for your help
Firmware is identical. Only difference of Dev edition is ability to get unlock code from moto and warranty surviving doing so.

Swappa
I looked for a Dev edition for a couple months and finally have up. Instead I decided to look for one that was 'not' on 4.4.4 and found a used maxx on 'Swappa' that was on 4.2.2 so I could unlock the boot loader with the sunshine app.
You can get the actual firmware to flash onto your device directly from Motorola. Here is a copy of the e-mail I received from them along with the download request link.
This link will give you access to the software you requested. To re-lock an unlocked Motorola
device, you must first re-load the original Motorola device software image. Download the image we’ve shared with you here to a computer, and using the Android SDK, follow the instructions on this page to flash and re-lock your device:

[Q] Pls Help rooting/flashing/new ROM Moto G (2013) XT1033

Hey there!!
I'm a newbie, would appreciate your help very much. Long ago I had rooted my Milestone 2 and installed a Cyanogen. But that was long ago and now I'm overwhelmed with so much information on this forum.
I've got a Moto G (2013), Dual Sim XT1033, bought in Brazil.
Update to Lollipop 5.0 has been one of the worst decisions, it works VERY badly now.
I wanted to get a new ROM. (Cyanogen 12? but I saw on their webpage my device is not supported, it also gave me that message when I tried to install thei apk)
It can be that or another popular one. The thing is that I dont know how to do it, and FAQs and walkthroughs assume I know a lot of concepts which I dont (like the difference between rooting and flashing my device) and procedures I am not aqcuainted with.
Please, has anyone got a starting guide? About flashing/rooting (?) my motoG and how to install (and which do you recommend?) the rom without much technical vocab..
Thanks a lot in advance!!!

Moto G- first you have to unlock the bootloader then root your phone then flash a custom recovery then you can flash a rom of your choice ( i recommend the stock optimized lollipop, has great battery life :good: - forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g/development/rom-stock-motorola-lollipop-rom-t3017510
Does steps for unlocking bootloader and rooting is same even after updating to 5.0.2, I mean same as steps that are available for moto G android 4.4.2 ?
I have moto G (1st Gen) bought in India updated to 5.0.2
Thanks in advance

How to root MotoG3 (with all of its variants!)

Hi,
I'm new to the Motorola/Android universe and coming from a Samsung Phone, I was able to root all of my galaxies (there were 3 of them) by using Odin and custom root process made by some amazing xda devs.
I've got my MotoG3 today (XT1543 2/16GB variant) and I'd like to know how can I successfully root it!
So, let's broaden the question to all of MotoG3's variants so new users like myself can relate too!
Q: How to root the MotoG3?
Thanks in advance!!
Read this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/2015-moto-g/orig-development/twrp-twrp-moto-g-2015-t3170537
@alfick3: I did read it ! Sorry if I didn't get the information right...
So, in order to root the phone you have to flash TWRP?

I don't have the phone yet (still using my XT1034 1st Gen G), but you can try any of the 1click root methods. I don't know if anyone has yet. Personally, though, I'd rather have the custom recovery then root.

Read (Google) one of the thousands of threads on how to root any older moto g, it will be the same as long as you have a custom recovery that's compatible with 3rd gen.
So, as a friendly user pointed out on the TWRP thread, I believe this method should work on all of Moto G3 variants:
davidstelephone said:
After unlocking the bootloader & installing TWRP as described in the main thread, when you go to reboot, the recovery points out that you're not rooted and asks if you'd like it done. Neat & simple.

Also, bear in mind that your warranty is void as soon as you enter the codes on Motorola's website in order to unlock the bootloader.
Any mod available to close this topic?
