Volume increases by too much between 4th and 5th steps - Google Pixel Questions & Answers

This has been discussed over a r/GooglePixel in the following threads without a solution: From 8 days ago, and in early December.
The volume between the 3rd and 4th click from muted (so 4th and 5th steps counting muted as the first) is a big jump. It's too loud, and the step down is too soft. Something between those two would be great to have. I have tried apps that advertise volume control one percent at a time, but none work on the Pixel. Apparently there's a ROM that allows it, but I want to stay stock. Any other solutions?

Music Listening Experience

Hey, greetings from Slovakia
I'm curious, are there ways to improve sound music experience in a Windows Phone (Lumia 710), software-wise?
The phoney comes with NO sound enhancement options so it's clear that any such attempts'll be purely software-based.
I'm interested in these two, in particular:
1) Equlizer software, working with Music and Videoss app, if not globally
2) Total number of REAL volume levels (the phone should have 30, but has about 8.
Now I'm aware any of these'd be possible with a custom ROM only so that's why I'm asking first, as I suppose learning to flash that thing is going to take me couple of hours (newbie).
Thanks for everyone's reply
If you'd gone with an HTC phone, you might have been able to use the Sound Enhancer app (which worked fine pre-Mango, although it seems to have been taken off the Marketplace since). That provided the equalizer, at least...
I don't really know what to say to your complaint about the "REAL" volume levels; I can hear a distinct change in volume at each step. I do feel that the minimum should be lower (I occasionally mute the phone by accident, tapping down once when it's already at 1) and I think that actually might be configurable in the registry (I haven't looked *very* hard yet) so that might be possible with a custom ROM. I know you can adjust the number of steps in the volume control in the registry, too.
My only real gripe with the way WP7 handles sound is how freaking loud minimum volume is. Maybe this is just a hardware level issue, but I do somewhat agree with you; in that the phone doesnt seem to have a lot of range, in regards to volume control. However, I feel the 30 step software volume dial is audibly different between every step.
I was referring to this issue (posted by me): http://discussions.nokia.com/t5/Har...trol-only-8-levels-instead-of-30/td-p/1504138
Hope it's allowed to post links to other forums. It's Nokia's official, not a community. Best part is no one from Nokia gives a flying phuk, the question is unanswered for 3 months.

volume too low on KatKiss ROM

Since I've flashed TeamEOS or KatKiss I noticed that the volume in many apps (youtube, games etc) is very low.
Is there a way to boost the volume?
I've already tried KAT Tool with max profile but volume is only a little bit louder and "volumebar-overlay" (displayed on screen when changing volume) does not work proberly (installed latest KAT Tool on KatKiss 225).

What signal volume number from the Kat app do you see? Is it max at 63 or lower? Is it lower than press more times at volume up until it is at 63 or the sound level you want.
Speakers showing 63/63

Did you tap the FM34 DSP Reinit button in Kat App?. That help me sometimes when I have the same issue

Seems to be a litte bit better now. Is this a permanent solution?
Is there maybe a better solution?
Hopefully I have soon 10 posts to submit the problem with the volume bar in dev-thread.
Al
Hi Al, If you look at the KAT KISS and KAT App threads in the dev section (Yes, I know it's a lot to read) you will see that this is something that comes up periodically. I believe that the general consensus is that if the DSP looses it's mind and volume drops then just re-init and off you go. It only takes me a second to reinit. It usually happens to me when I'm watching video and I pause and go do something else then go back to video.
As soon as I have 10 posts I'll request that the audio-settings will be integrated in katkiss-rom.
BTW: do you have the volumebar-overlay-problem too after installing kat app?
Al
Some off topic: are the captchas on posting only for new members or are they needed all the time?
Found the answer of my offtopic question: Also, you must fill out a CAPTCHA in order to post as long as you have fewer than 10 posts.

Hi, Not sure what you are referring to with the volume bar overlay problem? Can you be a bit more specific? There are several small idiosyncrasies with the whole volume thing. Thanks

After installing KAT APP the volumebar overlay (small displayed bar when changing volume) does not work proberly.
No matter if I change volume up or down the bar jumps everytime back to 100%.

I unchecked the cascade button. I get about 10 or 11 different levels from 0-63, just not all 63. I had issues with Talk/Hangout notifications muting it when if get a message.

I've tried to set the volume to 0 (according to kat app).
In range 0 - 12 the volumebar works fine but kat app displays 0 in notificationbar.
All levels above 11 or 12 are displayed correctly in notification bar but volumebar shows 100%.
Al
The reason for this is that the Android volume bar only has 12 positions and cannot be easily redone for 63.
This is one reason why I turned off the Cascasde levels. I still get the same loudness of volume, but in 12 increments (levels on the KAT 0-63 scale):
0
5
10
15
20
25
31
36
42
47
52
58
63
And then the Android Volume Bar works "normal" where it is all the way to the right when it is loudest. I do not feel the need to have 64 different levels of volume myself.
I also don't need all 63 levels in volumebar.
Where can I disable the cascade levels?
Al
In the KAT app, Audio Tab.
Untick the box that says something about cascading the analog and digital levels.
Looks good - I'll try this.
Al
Yup. Have that "issue". I just got used to it and use me ear to judge volume level. Sorry but I dont know of a fix.

It's my understanding all custom ROM's have the low volume issue...and the KatKiss/Katapp helps alleviate some of it. But even so, not as loud as the original/native TF101 rom. Unchecking Cascade helped eliminate the confusion and sudden volume increaments, but still kinda low when compared to native.
However, now one of my speakers has completely died....after limping along for many months by a well placed finger flick on the speaker to bring it back.
So now it's headset for me, or the new external Bluetooth speaker i bought a couple days ago for $34

I've tried googling tf101 speaker replacement...just seemed kinda lengthy a wait for the parts delivery and a price that could be put to better use saving for the next tablet.

My TF had a DOA speaker when I got it, I bought the replacement set from asusparts.eu, it took a long time to arrive, more like months than weeks iirc, but it got here and its been working since
http://www.asusparts.eu/en/partfinder/Asus/Pad/Eee%20pad/TF101#Speaker
Just checked the site and it looks like they either have none in stock or are not selling speakers now
The speaker would work when I pressed on the tiny cone, so looked to me as if the wire had snapped from the coil somewhere inside the speaker
EDIT -
£30 but will likely arrive a fair bit quicker

Volume Bug in Lollipop( I guess)

I have been using many Lollipop ROMs including version 5.0 and 5.1 in my One plus one. From the day 1 of my Lollipop use, I have a volume bug, which I thought would be resolved in the future. The issue is, after using some apps like VoipStunt, Line messenger or some other calling apps, the loud speaker stops working and the sound is produced only in the ear piece. When I press volume button at that time, I can see the in call volume level pops up, instead of media or speaker volume. This is very consistent bug, which is there in all the roms I have used. I can resolve this mainly in two ways. 1. I can swipe to dismiss all the recent apps and this goes away sometimes(can't rely). 2. Reboot the phone. Many a days, I missed my alarm due to this.
First I thought it could be the error with Lollipop for one plus one. But now I see that, everyone of my friends those who use Lollipop( Yuphoria, Yureka, Zenphone 2, HTC desire) have the same issue. This happens so randomly that now everyday I have to pay attention to the volume mode before sleep in order to make sure, I don't miss the alarm.
Is there any way to fix this? Is this a vanilla android bug? or something related to only these phone models? please advise me. Please don't be angry if this is the wrong section to post this.
Cheers Pals!

HTC U11 Android 8.0.0 volume steps problems

Hello to everyone
I've recently become an owner of a brand new HTC U11, mostly for it's playback capabilities. I even got new earbuds JBL reflect aware, but I'm still struggling with major, very known issue, lack of sufficient volume steps. I was trying to achieve this with some of the applications, but all the solutions were unsatisfying or were even worse, distorting the output sound. Finally I got myself to this forum and I've found, that there are ways to achieve this by adding a proper entry into the build.prop file.
I tried this, but final result also turned out to be unsatisfying. Why is that? Because when I add entry to build.prop, after reboot of the device, the amount of volume steps increases but something strange happens. Let's say I set it to be 30 steps. What it actually turns out is, that starting with a zero volume level, when I increase volume it reaches the highest possible at 15th step, then at the 16th step the sound gets significantly quieter and again increases to the maximum, when I reach the final 30th step.
Similar situation takes place, when I set the amount of steps to 50. Only this time those 50 steps become divided into the first casual 15 and another 35 additional steps, where at the beginning sound also gets quieter to reach its maximum at 35th step, which is actually the last 50th.
The entry looks like that: "ro.config.media_vol_steps=30"
It seems like it doesn't override the default setting, what is supposed to do from what I read.
I also tried other way. I found that decompilation of framework.jar file allows to modify AudioService.smali, to achieve the same result.
But this is demanding some serious knowledge, and I'm a total newbie to this, so I achieved nothing. Especially, that I couldn't find a proper framework.jar file, since it is probably in the different location, then described and probably compiled into the *.oat file.
If there's a way to solve my problem by editing the biuld.prop file or other *.prop files? I'd rather do it this way. If not, I think I will be persistent to achieve my goal, hopefully with some help. : ) Mostly because I find it really disturbing not getting possible a proper volume level over the remote control in the headphones, and getting it manually through some apps, equalizers is not what I meant by obtaining new headphones.
Hi viekowy
I understand your frustration totally as I have gone down the same road.
The build.prop thing works on AOSP ROMs, but not HTC Sense based ROMS.
I don't believe there is a solution, except I have found that the POWERAMP Player app has an option to increase volume steps that actually works on HTC Sense ROMs!
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.maxmpz.audioplayer
USB Audio Player also has volume steps option, but it doesn't work on HTC Sense ROMs.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.extreamsd.usbaudioplayerpro
So I've stuck with Poweramp Player as it plays 24bit flacs and is a fully featured HD Audio player.
I would like to know how the programmers of Poweramp Player overcome this problem as I have other players that would benefit from 50+ volume steps.
I use Ainur Audio mod as it makes a vast improvement on sound-staging and fidelity. (I don't use Viper etc).

Give it a try and let us know how you get on.

Semi-Perm fix (no patch) for random sound change from clear to muffled/bass and back.

Thanks to @cstark27 for the Magisk Mod, and @S8rooted&tooted for troubleshooting a non-patch fix.
So there's an issue with our phones that makes the sound either sound clear, muffled (some call it bass heavy), and then it changes back and forth seemingly randomly. There are three things you can try without using the Magisk Mod, and all three seem to work with one that I personally found to work the best.
1. If you're playing YouTube videos you can pause/play the video. This seems to change the sound either way depending on how it sounds before pausing.
2. Raise volume to 100%, and then back down to where you want it. This seems to be consistent to have the sound be clear without the muffled bass sound.
3. (This is the best for me) Turn off any equalizers any apps have, and only have Google Play Music's equalizer on, and set to Normal without Bass boost or Surround sound on (as in the screenshot). There is a chance something starts the randomness again, and I found the best solution is to reboot, and then it will be good again for a good while (hence the title "Semi-Perm").
I've been using number 3 testing it in all apps I can think of that has sound/music from games to YouTube to simple apps that just make a click (even clicks can be different when the sound changes overall). I have yet to hear any sound change to muffled/bass, and even the top and bottom speakers seem even again. Pausing/playing, raising sound to 100% then back down, the sound is consistently clear.
Here's two links to the other thread with the Magisk Mod, so you can try either of these three methods, or try the Magisk Mod. Hopefully Google will sort it out when they release next months update/fixes.

PS - Another great step to take is to submit feedback through your phone if you have this issue. I've done it myself, so if Google keeps getting feedback, hopefully they will take quicker action.
I think I found the main trigger. It may be known already, but I just put the pieces together. Since if the sound gets muffled, and turning the volume to 100% then back down via the physical volume buttons, and the sound gets clear again, I decided to test how long the volume stays clear after a reboot since a reboot always seemed to produce clear sounds every time. It seems to be steady clear through all apps, videos, and sounds as long as I don't touch the physical volume buttons. The moment I change the volume via the physical buttons my sound starts acting up. Say I'm in an app, and I want to change the media volume. Well if I use the physical buttons of course the volume changes, but like I said the sound suddenly becomes unstable, and I notice the change from clear to muffled soon after, but if I use the volume sliders through the settings section I never have an issue. I did it a couple of times, and it's been very consistent, so now I just use a shortcut on my homescreen to adjust the volumes, and never touch the physical keys. For those having this issue please report back if you try these methods, so hopefully Google can patch it sooner rather than later.
https://support.google.com/pixelphone/thread/3551881
Found another trigger. All was fine for over a day without touching the physical volume buttons, and then I received a call. Took the call (didn't touch volume), and once the call was complete the next app I opened had he muffled sound. Same app I used tens of times since last rebooting. Rebooted again, and all is good again.
So far: Physical volume buttons, and voice calls are two triggers.

I've been keeping my eye on this thread, and came across a poster who said they "fixed" the issue by uninstalling the Phone app updates, and then reinstalling it. I've tried so many things that I almost gave up, but for three days now I haven't had the issue even after several calls. I haven't rebooted yet, so I don't know if it will stay "fixed" (I'm using quotes since I don't really know if it truly is fixed for good). The funny thing is I went to say thank you to the poster, but their post somehow is now gone. I don't know if they removed it, or a mod did, but the "fix" seems to work.

Well this worked for several day, but I was watching YouTube, and had a phone call come in, and the issue came back. Retrying the "fix" didn't seem to work again. I deleted updates from Phone and YouTube, but I still get the issue. The only reliable temp fix is to reboot, and it seems good until a call comes in. Luckily I don't have that many calls, so sometimes I can go a day or so with good sound all around.
On a positive note I tweeted at Made by Google about this, and they replied saying that's not what they want users to have, and to DM them, so hopefully it will lead to a real fix by Google.
I think the random sound change isnt a bug, its automatic presets based on what type of sound it is, like sound for phone, sound notifications, different types of music etc etc.

Right, but there is a bug because the phone will apply the Phone app sound/bass to YouTube, but if you pause/play it, or turn the volume up to 100%, and then back down, the bass goes away. I agree with having presets, but they shouldn't mix/match when they feel like.
Since Google doesn't seem to care about this phone, or this issue, or their customers who bought it, as they haven't even bothered to acknowledge that it is happening I've trying all kinds of things, and keeping track of when it happens most. The latest "fix" that seems to be consistent is keep the in-call volume at 100%. Usually I keep it one notch down, but I was on a call two days ago, and had to turn up the sound to 100%. I forgot to turn it back down after the call, but ever since I haven't had the issue where the sound randomly changes from clear to muffled/bass. I've had sever calls since, and all is still good. I know when none of the volume controls are at 100%, and you get the issue, you can "fix" it by turning the regular volume to 100%, and then back down. So my theory is since the call volume is always at 100%, it is keeping the sound switching at bay.
I still can't believe after more than six months Google treats their customers so badly after paying $1000 (I did since I pre-ordered it). "Here buy our over priced phone now that will soon be half the cost, and then don't expect fixes for issues." Thanks Google.

I see what you mean, kind of gets tangled up in itself as it doesnt switch fast enough between the presets, when i get notification after notification really fast the phone the phone gets confused.
Its defo googles ai, i remember this bug from way back.
