Native SIP account on Mate 9 ? - Huawei Mate 9 Questions & Answers

Has anyone managed to add a SIP account on the mate 9 via the native Google SIP implementation ?
Aka: there are a lot of web pages like this one that explain how it should work:
https://support.google.com/nexus/answer/2811843?hl=en
Seesection "Use a VOIP serice to make calls over WiFi (SIP)"
I searched all menus on my Mate 9 Pro but could not find any way to enable this.
I tried to sideload the latest google "Phone" apk (version 5.1), but that could not get installed (incompatible).
I fear this functionality gets disabled because it's clustered under the elusive "WiFi Calling" that seemingly only gets enabled when the mobile carriers SIM/provisioning supports it. Even though SIP has nothing to do with the carrier. And no menu to be seen even without any SIM inserted and network settings re-set.
Any trick/suggestion how to do this welcome.
Btw: I understand how i can use dedicated SIP softphone apps, but my current experience is that they are not as well integrated as the android built-in SIP feature.

Would love to know that too. ATM I'm using MobileVOIP but would happily ditch it for the same seamless experience I had on my ancient HTC Desire.

There is a separate thread on wifi calling.
I'm in T-Mobile USA and it's not supported on the L29 model. However, some German service providers have wifi calling and it's working.

Question about UK network

Hi, I have a touch pro unlocked and I am thinking of going to the three network from tmobile. Is this a good idea, as in will the phone work with mms and internet on three? They do not do this phone, and so do not provide settings, but will the settings be there on the phone originally or not?
PS I did try to search, but the word 'three' is too common and was not included, as was '3'
Regards and thanks,
Jordan
I'm with 3 in the UK. Running connection setup gets the correct settings automatically no problem.
From what I can see you can't beat the £5 per month for 2gb of data on a PAYG plan.
I get decent connection in most places I go, although I think some other providers may have better network coverage overall.
Hope this helps.
Cheers
Rowan
Excellent, thank you, that's what I wanted to hear . Do you have any problems using apps that use the internet? EG. iplayer, google maps, weather, things like this? Or are they all ok? Because certain networks like vodafone charge extra! Also, is the built-in windows live used for the msn addon?
Thanks,
Jordan
iPlayer won't work because it doesn't recognise the connection as being in the UK. Hopefully they'll sor that out soon.
Others such as Google maps, Messenger, Skype etc work fine.

New, BING with navigation

Just saw this on another site. Microsoft has released a new version of Bing that includes real time navigation, with voice directions, along with the other Bing search stuff.
Works great on the HD2 here in US.
Download latest at Microsoft Bing site
or here for CAB.
PocketNow has a video showing BingNav in action on HD2.
Pros:
Voice Prompts with street names
Walking and Driving Navigation
Full screen graphic of next turn
Voice control for search
Cons:
No pinch-to-zoom (zoom buttons work well)
Data plan required (bad for some)
US only (Possibly) [CONFIRMED - NAV in US only]
Maps are slow to load without 3G.
Note: Yes, just like Google Nav for Android, it uses data plan for getting maps or for search features. I dont think it can pre-load maps off wifi before trip.
Note2: This wont affect US HD2 users, but looks like Microsoft disabled Nav features on Verizon network so as to not kill off Verizon Nav App sales.
Cheers Pingu!
Works a treat here in Limeyland also.
Shabba!
it requires data plan for navigation to work.
Navigation doesnt work in Germany
Good stuff - it looks MUCH better than the ****ty Google-apps if you ask me.
works great but there is no pinch to zoom on the map
Looks good, navigation is only for the US though ... really hope it comes to the UK, it cant be hard, it knows where the roads are and can give directions.
wooooooooot
I don't expect it too soon here in Europe - our BING-websearch is still marked 'beta' here in Germany - it's kinda ridiculous.
This is much better than Google Map, I'm glad to see Microsoft catching up so seriously.
Honestly I don't see standalone navigation device garmin
lasting too much longer, if you have a company like microsoft or google offering free voice guided maps for free, and no matter how you slice it the majority of cellular/mobile devices have a data plan or way to access data almost anytime. I mean if 2 of your friends don't have data they probably have a wifi enabled phone and with android, winmo, and hate to say apple being a wifi router we all have connection. I think this is going to help the providers push the tier internet usage system. (sorry for long post was itching to post on this)
Thanks for posting the cab.
Navigation unfortunately doesn't work in the UK (says "all or part of your route is not in the United States. We are sorry, but navigation is not available outside the United States").
I find the voice recognition in the latest google maps better than 'Tell me' in bing - for the UK anyway. And google maps has pinch to zoom, and latitude which I think is good for keeping a beady eye on your gf
Eek. Not a fan. I think Microsoft can do better.
Thanks for the cab! I read about this earlier and it said to go to m.bing.com/download on my phone but when I did that, site said my phone (TMOUS HTC HD2) is not supported. However, I still downloaded a cab which did not do anything. So really thanks for this! I just tried it and it works! I love awesome free apps!
Works great!
Trick/tip: be sure you are using Internet Explorer to browse to m.bing.com/download. The site does not recognize Opera and it thinks you have an unsupported device. Using IE, it recognizes the device and offers the correct version of the bing cab.
I was using the wrong version of Bing for a while and getting frustrated that I wasn't seeing the latest features etc, until I figured this simple thing out.

If people try to download from Marketplace, it says that version was released on 4/27/10 and the voice directions don't seem to work for some Verizon phones. Download from m.bing.com and the voice directions work properly on stock Verizon ROMs.
how does it compared with Google Navigate... does this got audio control?
Is anyone using this on the AT&T Tilt2 (Touch Pro 2, Rhodium)? The last version of Bing that would locate me is V4.6.6. Every update since then has failed to both get a GPS lock and locate with cell towers. I've checked all the GPS com ports and everything looks as if it's fine, but it just won't lock on. Every other app that uses tower location and/or GPS works just fine.
I set up my Tilt2 as a dual boot; I actually have Android running on it now. Guess what? Google Navigation works just fine on it yet Android isn't even the native OS!
Why can't Microsoft get anything right??? Why does a Microsoft app not work on a (stock non-cooked) Microsoft ROM???
Anyone have any ideas on why the latest versions of Bing won't work on my device?

Can it preload full maps for the route over WiFi?

Do you guys have a dialer that works well w/ these MTCB units? Dial by name?

I'd love something similar to the android phone where you start to dial a name and it'll pull up all people in contacts or numbers you've dialed previously. Anyone have something they are using? Was going through play store but I'm unsure I'm happy w/ anything. I believe it is called T9
Thanks
Dave
Classic dialer apps designed for smartphones can't work with these HUs just because they haven't the hardware phone module inside.
The HU stock dialer uses Bluetooth to connect to a true phone and make phone calls.
So IMHO it can't be easily replaced, or at least I never heard of an available replacement, but only of modded stock apps.
Well that is a huge bummer. I really need to be able to dial by the name of the person. Nobody else has needed this option?
Dave
FYI. Bluetooth does have a phone book access profile but I think it depends on the hardware and the Bluetooth stack. So assuming the hardware supported it and the stack got updated, it is possible to dial by name
Someone could add the features to the original bluetooth apk.
I would need that too. Also the possibility to change the sort order of contacts between "surname name" and "name surnam" + whitespace between SurnameName + Fix impossible calls to numbers with parenthesis in it (like +49 (282) 12345)
There are at least two solutions. Hope this is what you mean.
1. Use mtc headunit in combination with truecontacts. Truecontacts shows your contacts which are in the Google account of your hui. When selecting one, it uses mtc headunit to dial the number.
2. Use the automate app (Look in the Google Store). I use this app as a launcher, it has a dialer inside. My Google account on my phone is the same as the one in my hui. You can see placed calls in the past, you contacts etc. You can dail a placed number or select a Google contact to place a call. You must install mtc headunit to get it to work.

Thanks for your help, but what do you mean with mtc headunit? Is it a xposed module?
You can find it in Google play Store for example. Type rk3066 headunit. Autor is Petr.ws
What i'm using as a ghetto workaround is headunit, true contacts and dialer. This way I have a T9 dialer and a nice interface I can configure. It will dial the number but it will say no mobile network in a popup after cal which is a small price to pay to actually have a nice dialer.
Dave thanks again for bringing this subject up as it has made me think about it, and I've just found something I'm happy with I think so thought I would share!
Most dialers from the play store won't work. Irritating as I stated by testing them on my phone to see what I liked, but then realising the refused to install on the head unit.
I think Dave is using Ex Dialer. I wanted one with an intent that would take you to the favourites page for easy one click dialing. Pp dialer has this. Which is great as I can add it to my mtc manager modeswitch and I have back up one click dialing for when my voice dialing let's me down.
Do you get any error when dialing using this? With Ex I can use T9 or the contact list in there and click the name and it'll directly dial.
Dave
only had time to install it this morning and click a favourite contact and it worked fine. T9 search worked, but didn't try going through the contact list - i will try that.
But you do get the mobile network not available popup right?
Yep
You could try Car Dashdroid on the play store - it provides a great interface and the smart dialer feature where you can type someones name rather than number.
but does it work on our units? There are tons of nice dialers but none can send the intent to dial.
Tried car dashdroid but not able to make calls from my unit ...
All dialer apps i I tried including Truecaller not working for me... Any ideas?
This is old but there is another launcher which does allow direct dialing, it is called FCC car launcher, overall a very nice UI.

Car Android independent dialer without Bluetooth
Hi,
I'm not sure that this is the right thread but didn't find a more compatible one ...
I'm looking for an Android dialer application, that will use my car's Android multimedia internal SIM, instead of connecting to the phone via Bluetooth.
Every dialer that I've tried, was able to dial only via my phone using the Bluetooth and failed if it was disconnected.
Thanks

Advice please on a dialer app to use with a 907A, no longer carrier-locked to AT&T

Advice please on a dialer app to use with a 907A, no longer carrier-locked to AT&T
Hi,
I live in Europe, have just bought a used 907A from the US. I've carrier-network-unlocked it and put in a European SIM.
The system recognises the new SIM and happily uses it to download data eg off the internet.
I also have a Tab S 10.5" which similarly takes a SIM, and downloads data PLUS it uses a Samsung dialer app with the SIM to make & receive cell phone calls & text messages.
So I've tried to find an app which will do the same on my 907A, but so far none connect calls.
Any dialer/contacts/text messaging app recommendations, please?
(I know from other threads I could use VOIP instead as a work-around, I'd prefer a cell solution if there is one)
I know that AT&T did not include (or blocked) calling/messaging in the code in the AT&T shell, but had hoped to add/get round this.
(A used "international" version p907 had proved impossible to find)
Many thanks
Merry Xmas

Hi David,
I'd not found a satisfactory dialer, but have had pretty good success with Google's Hangouts doing both phone calls and video chat. In fact,I plan doing a conference call tomorrow with my Sister's family in Spokane, and my family here where I live. This will involve my Note Pro, my Sister's desktop, my Nephew's Note Pro, my Niece's iPad Pro, and my Daughter's Mac. we're celebrating two Birthdays tomorrow. I guess this is the new face of family in our age. Pretty cool, Huh?
By the way, we're experiencing a pretty fair snow storm here in Salt Lake City. What's the weather like in your area of the UK?

Various questions about Note 10

Hi,
I've had similar concerns before buying my last X2, and xda community was really helpful to clarify a few things. I hope you can help me decide again, I will appreciate your input on the following topics:
1. I have read many times that the OS is killing background apps, therefore gmail, whats app, facebook and other notification do not get received. I have also seen many advices on how to solve it, but some people still have problems. What is your experience with these notifications?
2. In some reviews I have seen that camera support for external apps is limited. Have you tried using Open camera or CameraMx, or other camera apps – what is your experience?
3. I want to use Nova launcher – how well does it work on this device? Does it have any glitches?
4. Please comment on Wifi and Bluetooth connectivity – do you ever get any issues?
5. Please comment on mobile radio connectivity – did you get any problems with call quality? How well does the internet work 3G / 4G? Does anybody use it in Europe and can comment on this? What are the download / upload speeds that you get? I am in UK
6. How well does the GPS work? Do you have any issues with google maps and/or any other navigations?
7. With Mediapad X2 the data roaming was not working – if I have UK sim card and go abroad – mobile data does not work. I hope it does work with Note 10, doesn’t i?
8. After selecting English as a menu language – do you still get much Chinese left over in the OS?
9. Do you have any issues with google play and any other apps?
10. Does this phone have a notification light or a possibility to show notifications on the screen when the screen is off?
Many thanks for your help!

Hi,
I can only answer 2 questions, as I don't own the device, but looking into the specs, this phone does not have band 20, used by O2 and Vodafone here in the UK, so you will only get 3G+ speeds, Three UK and EE will get 4G+ speeds. Nova Launcher should run just fine, had Huawei/Honor CN models before and Nova launcher was running fine on them.
Still not decided in ordering one, I had the Vivo NEX before and that was just on the limit size wise for me, if you get it, let us know how do get along with it.
Have a good one.
Many thanks for your input. If you or anybody else will have any additional input on these topics please share it. If I will get the phone I will write my feedback as well, at the moment I am not sure what to get ...
1. Notifications work fine for me as long as I go into "settings -> apps" and then individually change the battery setting for each and every desired app. Going into phone manager alone and change app launch permissions is not enough.
3. Works as well as on any other phone I've had.
5. 3G/4G works as intended in bigger citys. In the countryside 4G will suffer and will not be available mostly. I'm in Sweden.
8. I don't see any chinese at all after setting it all up and disabling stuff I don't want.
9. No issues at all. Works just fine.
10. It has a notification light. and the possibility to turn on the screen when notifications arrive. The always on display they have is worthless and only shows time and battery.

Got my note 10 from Liaow to Ireland in about 4 days. Nfc payment in stores does not work. Tried everything. Safety net app keeps failing. Google does not play nice with Huawei either. No ability to wake device from screen off or lock screen like my previous Galaxy s8 plus. Google Assistant also will not recognize what's app contacts for voice texts. Google maps location history will not turn on either so it's not possible to share your ongoing location with friends and family. Great phone all the same just wish it played well with Google for the reasons mentioned above.

Many thanks for the input. After a lot of thinking I have decided to get Samsung galaxy S9+ instead of Note10. I bought from ebay (used but condition as new for 600£), phone is designed for UK market and still has 18 months of warranty. The main reasons which have driven me away from Honor was that water resistance, local warranty, headphone jack, better camera with OIS and no dust, etc. I also wanted a slightly smaller phone but this wasn't a major factor.
All the best for you Honor users!
PS I will still keep my Honor X2 for watching news at home etc.
1. I have read many times that the OS is killing background apps, therefore gmail, whats app, facebook and other notification do not get received. I have also seen many advices on how to solve it, but some people still have problems. What is your experience with these notifications?
It works fine, notifications are displayed
2. In some reviews I have seen that camera support for external apps is limited. Have you tried using Open camera or CameraMx, or other camera apps – what is your experience?
CameraMX and OpenCamera work but do not support all the features of the Note10 (example 60fps video)
3. I want to use Nova launcher – how well does it work on this device? Does it have any glitches?
Nova launcher works fine and the previous version (5.4) also supports forced scroll background)
4. Please comment on Wifi and Bluetooth connectivity – do you ever get any issues?
Never had problems (both 2.4 and 5.8). Excellent signal on both routers and drones
5. Please comment on mobile radio connectivity – did you get any problems with call quality? How well does the internet work 3G / 4G? Does anybody use it in Europe and can comment on this? What are the download / upload speeds that you get? I am in UK
Work well on the two 3G / 4G fronts and switch from one band to another fast
6. How well does the GPS work? Do you have any issues with google maps and/or any other navigations?
GPS is fast. Only problem (perhaps it depends on the CHINESE ROM) does not work the Google Maps history.
8. After selecting English as a menu language – do you still get much Chinese left over in the OS?
Italian version
9. Do you have any issues with google play and any other apps?
No problem with the Google APP and third-party APP
10. Does this phone have a notification light or a possibility to show notifications on the screen when the screen is off?
It should have it, but I do not use it so I can not answer with certainty
In conclusion it is an EXCELLENT phone, I would buy it again.
The only sore point ... Bootloader BLOCKED!

I've found notifications to be on the whole unreliable unless you go through the various steps to get notifications to come through plus locking the apps in the recent tasks windows (this last part was what worked for me).
Overall though, the experience is nowhere near as bad as the one I had on the Oppo Find X Chinese ROM.
I can also confirm the phone works fine in 4G with EE.
Any of you can play Netflix in HD (no modded apk version) ? It looks like someone can play Neflix only in SD with this device.
Thanks
Anyone know how to get Google assistent to work.

6.No gps issues at all all perfect maps all good but BEST app now is WAZE there are cameras warnings , crash warnings , police cars warnings
7.No problems if u enable data roaming all works .. but some sim cards u need to set up APN manually depends of your provider ..
8.No chinese you can remove all of them except app gallery and hi care but when u select your country it will switch to english or your language .
9.No issues with google play only issue with google pay..
10.Ys it has notification light it has always on display clock
Cons :
Problems with google pay - but contacted google chat and they told me to ask for call request and then call bank and make group call and google person will have to speak with bank person .. wil be doing it tomorrow .

once again, many thanks for such a detailed input, highly appreciate it. However as I mentioned in other thread I have decided to go with samsung s9+, mainly because it is waterproof, has UK warranty, also I was a little afraid seeing these posts with dust in camera. BTW - iris scanner is also a great thing when you want to unlock the phone with gloves on. On the other hand, damn I miss the big keyboard from Honor X2 ...
Anyway, there is no such thing as perfect phone - its always a compromise between different options. But thanks again for detailed review, I am sure it will be useful for other people
