Camera pro mode and manual focus issue - Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions and Answers

I have a SM-G930F and I have noticed something strange when I use the pro mode in the camera app. If I set the focus to manual and move the pin to the far right (where the mauntain pic is) the far objects are blurry. Or simply said - I don't have infinity focus and all the objects that are far are blurry. The problem only occurs on manual focus. When using the pro mode with auto focus, everything works fine?
I have tried Camera FV-5 app and the same problem occurs. Now I am wondering if this is a hardware or software problem and am I the only one who has it?
It is running on G930FXXU1BPLB firmware.

I'm sorry I can't give you a technical answer, or even a possible solution. But I can confirm that this does NOT happen on mine. Only difference is I have the FD version, but I doubt that would make a difference there.

Thanks for testing! The problem is really visible if you take a picture of something that is 50 meters or more from you. It is not that visible when you take a picture of something that it is 10 miters form you for example.
I will wait for the nougat update to see if it is going to fix this issue. I hope that it is a software bug. After all, the auto focus works just fine!
But if this turns out to be a hardware defect, then this will be the second brand new S7 that I bought with hardware defects!

Don't see how it could be a hardware issue if auto works fine, obviously the camera sensor itself is not at fault, rather the manual focus bar not allowing you to move it along far enough to the right IMO

I also think that it is a software problem, but it is strange that nobody else have noticed it or if it is only me. I guess that people don't use the manual focus and if somebody else have the same problem, they might not know.

Manual focus set to maximum.

I use manual focus and haven't noticed the problem
Mainly use it for close-ups though, not much point if you're shooting landscape / distance as Auto does the same job quicker
But can't see any issues in that photo, but it's too small - can you link to a full resolution photo of the problem?

Hello,
so you've got stock firmware from Samsung? Beside firmware it could be also a broken manual focus motor, but I'm not sure if it exist in this micro-piece of hardware

olafsand, thanks for the photo but it is too small.
*Detection*, I don't think I will use the manual focus much, but I wanted to take some night photos and the AF was having problem finding the correct focus point.
kryhstus, yes it is a stock rom (branded for Telenor). I am quite sure that the movement for the manual and the automatic focus is the same.
Just a quick sample:

Ah yes I can see from that sample
I also take night shots, like almost pitch black night shots, but leave the focus on auto, when I take the shot I see it go out of focus and back in as it tries to find something to focus on, and best guess is that when it can not see anything it just resorts to infinity focus, and all my shots come out in focus fine
Like these stars for example, can't get much darker than that and they are in focus

I will give it another shot and see how it will turn out. I have similar idea like yours. But I am thinking of taking 5-10 photos at 10 sec exposure at 400 (maybe 800?) ISO and stack them. Just for fun.

800 ISO might be very noisy, if you're gonna stack them try with low ISO x 10 photos, and also try with high ISO x 10 photos, see which turns out better
That image with the stars was just a single 10 second exposure with I think 150-200 ISO - so stacking 10 of those should look pretty good

Ill do tomorrow another photo outside and share drive link to see original file.

Looks like the fence is in focus mainly on that photo
This is maximum manual focus with mine (Also foggy day)

Not sure whether it's the same as your.
My S7E do have beyond infinity focus on manual where the real infinity is just before the end of focus slider.
While the out of focus blur when I set focus slider to the end is very subtle and not noticeable unless I zoom in or take a highly detail image, It still annoy me. So I always use auto focus which rarely fail me.
For my problem, I have read before though that it's might be the thermal expansion of the material that can cause this issue or the beyond infinity focus is there for protecting itself from it.

olafsand, your photo looks ok to me. Maybe it is just veeery little out of focus but is hard to say. Thanks anyway.
NonXtreme, do you remember where you have read about this? It will be interesting for me to check it out.
I guess I will have to deal with this problem and use auto focus for now. Lets hope that this is a software problem and it will be fixed with the 7.0 update...

I have nougat on phone. Lets hope that nougat fix your problem too
Sent from my SM-G930F using XDA-Developers Legacy app

I just got the nougat update and the problem is still present. I guess that it is a hardware problem after all.

I would just like to add that I had the s7 edge for a year and didn't notice it but it could have been there because it does happen on my s8 plus. You will only really notice it if you zoom way in that the furthest thing in distance that you can see is in focus with the slider up to about 80 or 85% of the way and it loses focus when you go above that. If you don't zoom in you don't notice it though which makes me wonder how many pictures of the night sky do i not have in optimal focus because that is that is really the only time i use manual focus on the far end is when there is very little light and seeing how there is nothing further away that I would be trying to focus on than stars, I would just move manual focus slider all the way to right. Now I know I cannot do that any more. I just hope its not having an effect on macro photography in terms of how close to an object I can focus because that is definitely when I use manual focus the most.

[APP] OneHanded for Galaxy Note - UPDATED

Hi everyone!
Since, as most people already noticed, using Galaxy Note with just one hand is not really possible I have developed an app to solve this issue. Since this app is very sensitive to kernel used I would like to get your feedback in trying this app on different firmwares/kernels.
Youtube video
Market link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vital.oh
RECENT CHANGES:
Added support for stock ICS
PR stuff after the break
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
*Requires Root*
*Currently supports Samsung Galaxy Note (tested on N7000) *
*THIS IS TRIAL VERSION!!! FULL VERSION REQUIRES REGISTRATION AND IS PAID*
OneHanded application allows you to comfortably use Galaxy Note with just one hand.
Also, better battery life while using smaller screen can be achieved
It is done by scaling the image on the screen to the size of Galaxy S screen.
Features (of the full version):
*no text on empty area
*create shortcut on home screen to go to OneHanded mode with one click. (You can choose on which screen side app will reside initially)
*change side of the screen by tapping on empty area
*auto turn to full screen when phone is rotated to landscape and back to OneHanded mode when rotated back to Portrait
Features (of the full version):
*auto switch to full mode after screen lock/unlock (configurable)
*notification icon allowing to return to full screen mode
This application supports standard Samsung firmwares - with custom kernels it may not work (however I have successfully tested it with some custom kernels)
Custom kernels: app requires kernel with KALLSYMS, so ask developer of your kernel to include this in his config when building kernel: CONFIG_KALLSYMS=y, CONFIG_KALLSYMS_ALL=y
Known issues:
A bit slow when in OneHanded mode. Better if using app like Tegrak Overcklock to lock GPU speed to 267MHz
Video and camera preview will not be scaled in OneHanded mode.
Stylus position will be incorrect while in OneHanded mode
------------------------------
Well now, that's quite clever.
Aw, shame, force closes on me. Cassie rom v6

Just to chime in to say it does work on a stock rooted LA2 ROM. A little lag of course but you mentioned about that so it's all good. Gimmicky but smart idea
Got the new version off of the market and it works now. Cool.
It would be really nice if there were 'size' options - it would be a fantastic way to show off the Note. You could say, 'here's how this app looks on an iphone'. Now here's how it looks on the Note.
Right now the one handed mode changes it to a 4.3" screen.

hmm. You are correct. Wrong numbers, though:
iphone 4 is 3:2, galaxy note is 16:10.
I think it'll still work, and I'll elaborate it below:
I some suggestions/comments:
1) A 'size mode' : i.e. a toggle of: 3.5"/4.3" (4.6?")
This would be nice for people of different hand sizes.
Just keep the same aspect ratio, for simplicity. Even when comparing to other phone sizes, the aspect ratios are close enough that it's still all good.
2) Galaxy note generic comment: It's actually quite difficult for me, if holding the phone in my right hand, to tough the extreme right edge of the phone. It's doable but I'm just begging to drop my phone.
So for your app, it would be really nice if you could place the smaller keyboard wherever you want, not just 'all the way left' and 'all the way 'right'.
An easier option would be just allowing 'centered'.
A centered 3.5" mode would be quite nice to type on, I think.
3) Don't know if you tried this, but if you take a screenshot in 'one handed mode', it only captures the screen. (i.e. not the black dead zone). I consider this a good thing.
4) I registered! Support this guy, people! This app has a ton of potential.

Tried this out of curiosity, im in tablet mode 200dpi, the screen initially successfully resizes when you enable (after allowing root), but when you want to disable:
error cant apply SPEN settings.No root permissions?unsupported firmware?error string:insmod init_module /data/data/com.vital.oh/files/ohmodule.ko failed (file exists)
I am on Imika 5, i have root.Reboot brings back to normal, wont register just yet, but great concept. Hope the above helps, i know it isnt useful for tablet mode, just wanted to test.
Great idea definitely but that defeats.the purpose of there size of this phone.

I agree. I mean, its a fantastic idea, and I mean absolutely no disrespect when I say this, but surely buying smaller phone would be a simpler solution?
I also personally have no issue with one handed operation of the Note. I regularly send texts when I'm walking using only one hand, and I can perform tasks such a web browsing, Facebook, Twitter, G+ etc. with just one hand. I'm no giant either; I'm 5'10", although I do have fairly large hands for a man of my height.

While anyone who buys the app and uses it 100% of the time should just buy a smaller phone, there are plenty of scenarios where you just occasionally need one handed use.
For Example, if you are eating, or standing on the subway or whatever.
Almost all reviewers complain about one handed use.
This app makes one handed use easier for the times you need it, and you can turn it off when you don't. I have pretty large hands and I find one handed use awkward at best. Sure, you can shuffle the phone up and down. With this app though, you don't need to.

OP & XDA Members:
Just out of curiosity, does the new "one-handed" mode for the SGN's keyboard not do anything for you? After updating to LB1 from KKA, I started using the right hand, one-handed keyboard and haven't had a problem since. Granted, it looks a little goofy to have all that usused screen real estate on the left side of the keyboard, but it works perfectly. If you haven't tried it out yet, I strongly suggest you do. It works a treat for me!
Here are some screenshots:

I rather like the one handed Samsung keyboard. But I like the onehanded SwiftKey x even more.
Also it's not just typing - it's for any application where you need to use the top of the screen for menus or buttons
In some situations it is very useful.

Camera Tips&Tricks

Hello ,
What settings are you using when taking photos with this phone ?
Personally I've tried to use both auto and manual with both 19 mp 4:3 and 17 mp 16:9 but the results were horrible ...
Do you guys have the same experience with the camera ?
At 40 kilometers per hour
19mp 4:3 and Sony automatic mode.
H8296
It is cloudy, rainy, not very bright at 17:14.
Really? The colour accuracy is the best I've ever seen on a smartphone. The details are also really great.
I only use auto @ 17 MP for now, and the experience is good so far.

Oh, the manual mode looks a little bit better.
If it is the right picture.
And in the internet, we would say, that this pictures needs more jpeg.
But I can tell you, that it isn't the hardware.
Sony need to implement the camera Hal 2 api with its Raw support.
And don't be sad, if you install lineageos with the DRM fix, you get the Hal 2 api. And a port of the Google cam hdr app.
But the DRM fix, lineageos and TWRP needing to be developed.
Of course you could use the treble lineageos without the device specific stuff.
But wait for the DRM fix or your camera is lost.
And I would wait 2 years until Sony stops the support, because only the Sony updates easily updates the modem, the vendor drivers and the other firmware stuff.

Actually the one picture on the right ( the one with the guy ) is on Auto ... I know that rooting this phones without DRM fix means ruining your camera and I had do not intend to root just yet ...
Sadly looks like a have to live with the way things work right now...
Have a nice day !
I noticed that sometimes auto mode would make horrible blurry images, especially in the darker areas. Sometimes not. It's a bit weird and i'm sure a software related thing. In general it seems like they do too much postprocessing and i hope there will be further optimizations.
Here a photo that looks identical between auto and manual when i tried to reproduce the problem - couldn't say for sure which is which.
All in all i think it's not too bad, weaker spots are always darker areas that are more distant.
While another time auto would set some weird iso value and zooming in, it looks completely blurry.
So i tried to take pictures of the Sunset...
DSC_0537 is Sony Auto Mode 38 is Manual Mode.
IMAG3418 is HTC10 Auto Mode, 19 is Pro Mode.
But on Another note.... WTF Is the Sony Manual Mode?
Iso from 50 to 12'800 is okay... but Shutter from 1 Second to 1/4000th?
So what if i want more than 1 Second ?
Oh... an Manual ISO control Sets HDR to OFF, always, without warning....
The camera takes pretty sharp photos as from my point of view. The Z5 had great photos, but XZ2 have better! Talking about auto mode...
I recommend ProCapture app!
It takes really nice pictures and have a lot of settings, including selfie panorama!
There's a mode that uses dual layers to reduce the noise in pictures!

Maybe Sony will extend the camera api further.
They already did progress over the years to extend the hardware level support category from Legacy to Full.
But Level_3, Auto focus EDOF, WhiteBalance: shade, WhiteBalance: twilight, WhiteBalance: WhiteBalance: warm fluorescent and RAW capture are still not available.
If we get the DRM fix and GCAM gets ported on SMD845, maybe we will get the full camera api on LineageOS or AOSP and better pictures.

Here are 2 videos comparing the XZ2 with one of the best mirrorless cameras sony evere made, the Sony Alpha 6000. On this channel you cand find much more videos with XZ2 comparisons against other phones, and you will see the results are pretty impressive. But "PRO TIP": never, NEVER use tap to focus and on screen shutter to take a photo in superior auto, it is using spot metering and will overexpose or underexpose like hell. Either shoot in manual mode and select frame metering or shoot in superior auto using the shutter button (half press to focus in the centre, recompose the scene, press all the way to take the shot). This is how the Sony camera is meant to be used

Yes quite small indeed and seems to be a lot of them don't like Sony - it's almost like a hate Sony forum, got to ask why buy a Sony Phone then come on here and ***** about it, rather sinister if you ask me
Hey guys,
I noticed a huge quality loss while taking photos in third party apps like "a better camera" or through app-inbuild camera functions of WhatsApp, Instagram, Signal etc. It affects both cameras.
Why does this happen?
Is it because the apps don't have the permission of using the camera drivers / or api ? Is there any workaround?
The loss of quality (mostly pixelated and grainy as f#) is quite obvious and really grinds my gears.

* Particularly the wide-angle camera and portrait mode don't work for me, slow motion looks a bit dark.
exciting, thanks for sharing.
Works for me as you instructed on Lineage OS 17.1 coderzs. Wide-Angle and Portrait is crashing. Everything else great by far. So much better than all of these buggy gcam and hypercam mods i tested.
Tbh, the MIUI stock camera is the only thing which makes me look back at MIUI. Really looking forward to the wideangle and portrait fix if its doable.
I have been comparing this camera to OpenCamera (OC) on default settings on a short trip to the prepper-ridden supermarket.
It appears to me that in comparison to the OC pics this camera oversharpens or is applying a lot more contrast, which makes the pictures look uncanny up close and washed out in the distance. Super HD mode exaggerates this oversharpening effect.

Thanks, how good it works for you.
Try this version, it works very well and you don't need the .xml file.
It seems that some details were corrected, for example that change of color on the cell phone screen when taking the photos.

Yes, I've noticed that indeed, didn't bother me that much because on my Pixel 1 i was using one that did just the same sometimes. I will try, thank you!
I have evox installed and it already has the anx camera but the protrait mode crashes the app
Also I'm using pixel cam 7.3 by jairo_ rossi and the wide lens works fine but the ultra wide crashes the app every time i try to take a pic, anyone has any suggestions?

Works for me as you instructed on Lineage OS 17.1 coderzs. Wide-Angle and Portrait is crashing. Everything else great by far. So much better than all of these buggy gcam and hypercam mods i tested.
Tbh, the MIUI stock camera is the only thing which makes me look back at MIUI. Really looking forward to the wideangle and portrait fix if its doable.

The most stable thing I tested in Gcam is a HyperCam, it is one based on Gcam 6.1.021.

If you mean the 0.6x that one I can't get working on pixelcam, but that's really a depth finder, not actually an ultra wide camera anyway, in MIUI it's used during portrait or other shots to attempt to find the best zoom depth for photos, it's not actually intended to be used as a camera normally.

That's the 1.5 you're talking about, in pixelcam when i press the 0.6 button it shows the feed from the ultrawide indeed but when u change mode or press the chutte button or anything else it crashes, meanwhile the 1.5 camera which is the depth one also shows it's feedz since it's 5mpx it's grainy and bad and barrow but it works properly and takes pics and all

Any of you geniuses working on an APK for GCam?

Still prefer GCam's processing and computational photography over Samsung's. Is there a specific user to keep an eye on?

I have been searching various forums for weeks, for any Gcam version to work on the FOLD2. I know the Samsung camera is pretty decent but I like Gcam as well and the ability to use Playground AR. I'm not sure why none of the Android 10 (snapdragon) APK's seem to work even partially. Gcam worked great on my previous FOLD device.Grrrrr... It's always something....

I prefer Gcam's hdr look over Samsung's. They've had longer to work on computational photography and still do a better job I think. Also Samsung's software over-sharpens.

You are correct the shutter button comes up in middle of the inner screen not the bottom
The version I posted a few days back was NOT made specifically for the Fold2 so the UI us a bit off.
However the pictures and videos it produces are excellent

in multistar click on "I [heart] Galaxy Foldable" at the top, then set aspect ratio for each app, then scroll to gcam
it doesn't fill the whole internal display, but at least everything fits as it should on both screens this way

I found that a ratio of 18.5:9 with Urnyx05: GCam_7.3.018_Urnyx05-v2.2-fix.apk version of the app worked really well
So far the only gcam apk that's working for me on my ATT version of the Fold2 is Urnyx's 7.3 v2.2.
Here's a direct screenshot of what it looks like on the external display using the 16:9 ratio which you'll see doesn't fill the top section of the display but whatever
What it looks like using the inner display with 16:9 ratio set in Good Lock
Lastly, does anyone else have an issue trying to use the advanced settings to enable the 2nd and 3rd lenses with this setting? If I try to enable this, the app forces closes and clearing the data with the app settings to bring everything back to default is the only way to get it to run again. Anyone able to get the 2nd and 3rd lenses working?

Greatness 2.1.1 works too -- I believe it uses the Urnyx code, so same issues.
The ultrawide lens works for Urnyx 2.2, but the Camera Ids are mixed up and it shows as the telephoto. When setting up the aux lenses, only enable the telephoto lens option. Then to use the ultrawide just click the 2x button. Lib patcher adjustments need to be made under telephoto too.
Hopefully Urnyx fixes this in a future version -- a couple people have mentioned it happening now in that gcam thread for other Samsung phones too.
The actual telephoto lens won't work in gcam on this or any other Samsung phone for now because Samsung never exposes that camera in the system for some crazy reason.

Updated Camera Pro App

I've been playing around with this on the 5 II, and it works fine. I like the new interface.
New photo Pro app available
Guys, just seconds ago, I found, that there's the (from what I guess) new photo pro app from xperia 1 III is available here apkmirror.com I tried to install and it worked! Not able to take a screenshot as it's forbidden by system (not really...
forum.xda-developers.com
The interface has quite a few changes. I took a dozen or so photos and I'm happy with the results but I'll leave it to pixel peepers to pass judgement.
When you install this, it gets installed separately or replaces current Photo Pro?
My icon for Photo Pro stayed but it opened the updated version. Since the basic app is included in the updated app, I deleted the old basic camera app. The settings I had set stayed the same with the upgrade.
Yesterday I walked 7 kilometers taking photos and I'm very happy with the upgrade. HDR is improved and while I'm not a pixel peeper I like the photos. They stand cropping well.
Yeah it replaces the old one. I'm hoping to get out more this weekend to test it out.
Right now I'm keeping the basic app installed. I like being able to launch either app quickly to capture a picture, as I have different settings for both. But maybe I'll get comfortable with using the one app as I play with it more.

Thanks for the confirmation, in that case I will wait for Sony to formally update Photo Pro App(if we are lucky enough). If there is a way we can install new one without replacing current one, let me know, I would also like to test it out.

I just installed and how i undertand its replacing both camera apps. And when you run each just the photo pro app launching, but the stadard moves to phot pro app under Basic mode
I deleted the standard photo app from my home screen but it's in my app drawer. When I click on it the old standard photo app runs. When i click on the icon for Photo App Mark III, version 1.2.A.0.17, I get the new Photo Pro app which includes a new Basic Mode which replaces the previous camera app. That's kind of confusing but it you run the new Mark III Photo App it's the basic and pro both. It's all you need.
I also read that you can go to apps and uninstall the new version if you don't like it. I like it so I haven't tried that.

Thanks for more info! Few more questions before I install the app:
Do we need to clear cache of current Photo Pro app before installing new one or direct install works?
What is working nicely(improved) vs what is not working(new features) in this new App?
Anyone got Monthly OTA updates after installing app, if yes was there any problems?
I didn't clear any cache. I simply installed the new app and the existing icon called it up. The only thing not working for me is turning on Photo Pro with the camera key but I rarely did that anyway. I never do videos so I don't know about videos.
I got a Google Play update but that's all.

So what are your settings? Stock Camera App disabled/other tools or button mapper installed?
I get confused. First, I never use the double-press power button to turn on camera. If I'm walking to the store and suddenly see something I touch the power, no press, and the phone opens to the home page and I touch the photo pro icon. Then the app opens to whatever mode I used last, which is usually programmed mode. This morning before sunrise I was using the shutter speed mode, S mode, and every time I opened Photo Pro it was on S mode.
If I'm out taking photos I have the photo pro app on and when I touch the power button--just the fingerprint sensor---the phone wakes up in the Photo Pro app.
Also, fwiw, I took the old Camera App, not Photo Pro, off my home screen. It's still in the app drawer and still works but I don't use it. I'm waiting for the "official" release of the new Photo Pro to delete it.
I've taken a lot of photos with the new Photo Pro app and have had zero problems.

Search "camera" in settings and you should see the option "Quickly open camera." If I recall the first time you do this it'll ask which camera you would want to launch. If you use fingerprint it'll also unlock the phone so you can go through the album. If not it'll still work but you can only see photos you've just taken.
You can also set photo pro to "Last used mode" under setup -> Shooting mode at launch.
No need to actually unlock the phone, no need to press on the app. Essentially the same as pressing the camera button.

Don't know about that, I still use the old version. Didn't want to update it via APK file, not sure how it would be functioning.
