lost connection on phone

Can anyone give some advice please.
I just got my smartwatch 2 SW2 (s/w 3.25.11) and have a Xperia Z (4.3 JB)
I connected the phone and watch fine but found that my phone has no internet connection via the wifi. On
turning off Bluetooth and disconnecting the watch I have the internet back again.
If I leave the phone on 3g I get internet access even with the watch connected.
I downloaded the Sony Update Service program and installed the lates firmware, I deleted and re downloaded
the Smartwatch 2 app from the play store and still the same. Deleted all the add on apps I downloaded, left the ones
Sony recommends.
But on wifi I lose internet connection
I must be missing something. works fine on 3g but not on wifi...
Anyone able to help me?

Perform a factory reset of your phone, it's clearly messed up somewhere (bluetooth or wifi).

Does it happen with other bluetooth peripherals?

Good point something I never tried.

So its down to the watch?
It did work at the start as I downloaded the gmail and other apps the watch suggested. Then later

Headset connection uses a different bluetooth profile than the SW2, so it's non relevant.
You could also try to connect the SW2 to another smartphone and see if its wifi connection keeps working.
If that pairing runs nicely, then some problem is in your phone.
It's unlikely that a non-defective Sony SW2 doesn't work with a Sony smartphone...

Im going to clear everything then try again later.
And good point try on another phone I will pop out to see daughter

Ok checked on another phone and it worked fine. Came back and installed the
watch app from the play store, then added a few apps. All was fine and the internet worked
ok with the wifi.
Happy man
A few hours later noticed I had not received some emails on the watch OR phone... on
checking I had no connection.
Turning off Bluetooth to disconnect the watch and in seconds I had emails arrive on the
phone.
I am back to square one again

You could also try to disable any energy saving on the phone like stamina mode or eventually reset the SW2 and try the pairing again from scratch.
If your SW2 works with another smartphone the problem is probably in your phone, if nothing helps, as a last measure you should try to factory reset your phone.

WIFI

Hello all,
This is my first smartwatch, I am having some troubles connecting to certain WIFI. Is there limitations on what kind of WIFI network this watch can see and connect to? My home WIFI seems to work just fine, but when I am at work, it doesnt see all the networks, and the one it does see......it wont let me connect to? Is there any way to fix this? I am guessing it might be some sort of security settings on the WIFI at my workplace?

From the Samsung Gear app go to Settings -> Gear Connection and turn on Sync Wi-Fi profiles.

Thanks for the quick replies....I found the setting and clicked WIFI sync....still no luck connecting to work wifi, uggghhhh. Any other ideas? Is there certain WIFI connections it is not able able to connect to?

It may not have the functionality to connect to 5.0ghz, only 2.4ghz Wi-Fi. I can't test that because my home router is from my broadband provider. I tried a google search and the only thing that came up was that it can connect to wireless b/g/n. Nothing stating if it can or cannot connect to 5.0ghz.

it can only connect to 2.4 ghz networks.
5 ghz usually need a/ac standard to connect to.

Whats the value of Wifi on a Gear S3 if you have your phone with you?

I believe the point of having Wifi at all on the gear S3 is so that your phone can continue to talk to your gear via the Samsung account over the internet (assuming both devices are on and connected to the internet over wifi)
Is this the only use case for Wifi being turned on?
Does this scenario only cover alerts, or will it also support calls texts and emails?

The two devices will talk to each other whether wifi is turned on or off. Wifi comes in handy for apps like Spotify so you don't have to use up your data and apps like Kodi gear where you can control multimedia through your watch .

You mean while out of bluetooth range? If so yes, that is one of the usages of wifi.

In Wifi mode you will keep receiving all kind of notifications including text, missing calls etc., but you can't make/receive phone call over wifi. Currently phone call over wifi is not available on this watch.

If you always have your phone with you (by definition this means within BT range) there is no reason to use WiFi. There is nothing that can be done via WiFi that can't be done via BT. But the reverse is not true.

So basically if you have your phone with you at all times, its a complete waste of battery. Turned off. Cheers.

I'm totally unclear on the purpose of Wifi on this watch! I turned off Bluetooth to use Wifi and it can't connect because the of "sign-in procedure not supported"! Does that mean it can only connect to an open network??? Those really don't exist these days.

Why is there such a big discussion about wifi on this watch? The watch has wifi because Samsung wanted to put it in there and most of us are grateful. Do you want a smart watch without wifi? Again, there are apps like Spotify that it is better to be on wifi instead of GSM, depending on what network you use.

No it can connect password protected networks, my watch is connected to my home wifi right now, password protected ofc. Try changing encryption protocol(i'm on TKIP+AES) of your access point or try to connect to another access point.

Lol, if i turn off password protection on my home network, then my neighbors will start using my Wifi! I can't believe Samsung overlooked this!! I'll just wait for a possible update???

I can confirm that it should connect to a wifi protected network. I use WPA2-PSK and it connects fine to my router.

The discussion is because people want to understand the uses of their watch. Having it is nice, but there aren't too many use case scenarios for it. Most of the time where WiFi is available, the phone will be close at hand and connected via BT. Streaming music (over WiFi or otherwise) is a very limited application because of the battery drain. If/when moreb Tizen apps are developed for the watch, using WiFi may become practical.

At home i do leave my phone in 1 place, keep my S3 on yes moving around its always BT, but moving further around the house when BT drops the WIFI takes over.
Also once i forgot my phone at home, but when i reached the gym (was registered for their WIFI) i still got my notifications etc.
But all in all no much use, but i left it on as could not discern much battery loss with it being on.

you have to sync the wifi from your phone to the watch then it will just connect.. look on the gear app settings> gear connection > Sync wi-fi profiles..

It's not about giving a use for WiFi all the time. Most of the time WiFi should be off to conserve battery. It is more about the one off scenarios like you forgot your phone at home, but you can connect to WiFi at work and tell your wife you are alive through a text... or for the tizen app developer, to test apps on your watch you need to connect to the watch via wifi... or for spotify.. there are several reasons to have it, but still it should be off Moore often than not

Well GWD needs the watch and PC connected to the same network (wifi) to get the faces from one place to another. Unless you get it into a store maybe, but having it on wifi is handy to test things out as you add them and modify themes.

Just to share my opinion. In my work I’m not allowed to have the phone with me. So the solution to continue receiving my notifications are through WiFi, and it works perfectly.

Streaming music from Spotify on my watch over Wifi.

WiFi (WiFi Direct) is also used for syncing Images, songs and large apps over to your watch; these would otherwise take lots of time over Bluetooth.

After last update there is no connection via wifi with my phone.. Does someone experienced the same issue?

It allows you to keep your watch connected to your phone when out of BT range but under the same wifi network.

... and you can install created watchfaces and transfer music from your PC/Mac to your watch (also with iPhone).

Also for apps like Spotify or should cloud pro or the YouTube app forgot the name, you can use it without using your phone to transfer data and just use WiFi. There are many uses for the WiFi its nice to have the option instead of not having it at all

I haven't investigated but I think the watch will not independently connect to any WiFi network that you phone has not first connected to. From what I understand, it can remember WiFi networks that it had connected to through your phone, but has no protocol to connect independently without the help of your phone! That's crazy!

Notifications through wifi

I am studying the options to buy a S3, but I need to access my notifications when away from phone. Will they work through Wi-Fi? When the phone is at home and the s3 is connected to the Wi-Fi at work ?
And also can I reply through a qwerty keyboard ? Is there any option?

No, the watch needs to have a Bluetooth connection with the phone in order to receive notifications.
Wifi is only for using the internet (browser) on the watch.
Or you need to get your hand on a LTE version of the Gear S3, that one uses a (e)SIM and then it works as a full phone and you can receive notifications.
There are qwerty keyboards available to buy in the Samsung App Store, but I don't know if they work great.
Default a T9 keyboard is on the watch, which you can use. Also some pre-defined smileys are available to use as answer.
And finally you can use your voice to answer notifications (only some languages are supported by Samsung Voice).

Thank you. But LTE variant is unavailable in Europe and even if I can buy one from US, none of the operators in my country use e sim...

What? WiFi on gear is not just for an internet browser. And there is not even a stock browser installed.
With WiFi enabled on your Gear you can use a remote connection to your phone. So if your watch is connected to a hotspot, it tries to achieve a remote connection to your phone and you can still receive notifications.
It has to be enabled on your Gear phone app.

No, it doesn't matter.
You can also just use your mobile network in your phone. This will work too, while the gear ist connecter to a hotspot.

Not true, at least not in my case,
I have never received a notification from my phone when I was out of BT range and still wifi connected,
But as soon as I get in BT range again, the notifications are coming in.
And no, there is no option for that in the Gear App nor on the watch.

The option is in Gear app, Gear connection->Remote connection. I would select Sync Wi-Fi profiles to confirm wifi connection as well.

Hi did you disable BT connection before you got it to be remote connected or did it happen automatic
it will be nice to get it to do it automatic even the BT is ON on my watch it go to standalone when there is no BT connection

Bluetooth is always activated on my watch and WiFi is set to automatic on/off.
If the watch looses the bluetooth connection, it automatically activates wifi and tries to connect to a hotspot. After a few seconds it switches from "standalone" to "remote connected".
This all works automatically.
But that only worked for me after I uninstalled all three Samsung apps on my phone (Gear App, Gear S Plugin and Samsung Accessory Service), resetted my gear and installed these three apps manually again from the PlayStore. Then I set everything up again. During setup, the phone asks if you want to use remote connection. If so, the gear app disables the battery optimization for the Accessory Service.

i want to leave my phone at home, and stay connected to a wifi at work, but from home to work i dont have wifi, and i receive notifications...will they be received once a arrive to work and connect to wifi?

You should receive notifications back from the time you were disconnected. But I'm not 100% sure.
I activated the setting that the watch only receives notifications if I wear the gear.
And after I put the gear on, I receive all older notifications. So I think this will also work like this with a remote connection.

I was pleasantly surprised last night while throwing out the garbage that my Gear S3 went out of Bluetooth range then kicked over to Wi-Fi. While i was outside a text came thru and i responded while on Wi-Fi so it does work...

But still no notifications when connected by wifi.

Well, another guy at work also has a Gear S3 WiFi only, and he was getting some notifications all morning long even though he had left his paired phone at home. I know for sure that he was at least receiving text messages notifications because I sent him a text message which he got the notification for on his S3, and he was able to respond using his S3 and I got it even though his paired phone was at home. So it does work even when the phone and the watch are on different WiFi connections miles apart. Impressive. I'm betting it's using the Samsung account associated with the watch and phone somehow to keep them tethered over WiFi in order to accomplish this amazing feature.

Sometimes it stops working me for, too.
Only way to get it working again is a gear reset.

Yes. Even the info text inside the gear app says that this is working via your samsung account.

So, Won't incoming call notification work when connected through WiFi ?

Hey! thank you! I recently configured that and works nice! at the begging was a little hard, after a few attempts, checking some Samsung account features, restarts both devices and testings, well, it works!
