Firmware... benefits of Tmo vs U - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Guides, News, & Di

I was running the Tmo firmware, and then installed the Eng kernel to gain root... big mistake. Soft looped and now I must start over!
SO... for those that have used both... which do you prefer and why?
The thread says that U firmware does not have VOLTE or Wifi Calling... do you find those are a benefit?
Anything else I should consider between the two?
thanks!

The U firmware does include those two. The main difference I noticed is no advanced messaging, no Samsung cloud and no bloat, not that there's much anyway.

if you flash the latest t mobile modem on the u firmware, wifi calling should work. its been some time since I was last on the u firmware but I remember it having the wifi calling option but I cant remember if it worked. I didn't see a huge benefit running the U firmware. it slightly less debloated. I was happier keeping all my t mobile features and disabling the bloat with package disabler. The u firmware makes the phone feel like a cheap dated Wal Mart phone IMO

Like stated before, U firmware with tmo modem will make wifi calling work just fine. The benefits of U is that there's less bloat, better battery life, and better performance. Especially when rooted. It's night and day difference in performance and battery life on the U firmware. I don't recommend the tmo firmware at all if you are going to be rooted.

I am using it since yesterday and noticed a big difference in battery life. I have not rooted yet. I will try to flash the latest K modem and see if I get voLTE and Wi-Fi calling.

No video calling on U.

I installed the U Firmware... it does seem about 10% faster than the Tmo firmware, and 100x faster than stock AT&T

I rooted while on the AT&T firmware (softlooped 2 days later) & then tried Tmo firmware + v15 fixes (softlooped 4 days later) ... I afraid to try rooting on U firmware. I really want to root so I can have Titanium backup but rebuilding from scratch is very painful (4 hours) if it softloops again.

I just used all the files from here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-s7-edge/how-to/firmware-g935uueu4api3-odin-files-t3509819 . You should be able to just take the modem file and flash it.

Tmo firmware supports carrier aggregation.

Same here. I found both; just hope they work. Hard to say. I have not seen LTE band 12 so far; only band 4 and I have opened all of them.

Isn't it the modem that enables it? I think using the U firmware with the latest TM modem (CP in odin) should allow WiFi calling, VoLTE, CA etc.
One disadvantage of U over TMobile firmware I found is that FM Radio only works on TMobile firmware and not on U.

Not a big loss. Anything else missing or not functioning properly?

So I am coming from the normal S7 - but I assume both U firmwares are at the same point.
I flashed the latest U firmware on my S7 last week. I really liked it, felt very fast and no bloat.. Well one issue I ran into was actually with games that take advantage of the vulcan graphics deal. Two games I tried were, Heroes of Incredible Tales and Vainglory (BETA version with vulcan support).
The game would load, cuts scene would show, but any in game graphics were all distorted with green colors etc. I honestly thought it was a game issue / phone issue but my coworker was playing the same games on his sprint s7 with no issues. So reluctantly I went home and flashed the latest T-mobile and the games run beautifully.
So disappointing that samsung isn't supporting the U firmware as well as the carrier versions.

Anyone know a way to flash T version over U and not require rebuilding all apps, accounts/passwords, etc?
I've tried Samsungs switch app and it never brings over app data or all accounts data... I have like 10 accounts.
Or is there a non root backup application that will do it properly and completely?
Thx

[Q] Is there any OTA update?

I just got this phone a month.
I rooted it.
And I receive a OTA update in recent days.
I havent try it.
Should I do it? I just want to make sure what this update is.
The update is basically a bug fix, and its supposed to extend your battery life. I have noticed my battery lasts a lot longer with the update. It won't ruin anything, you will most likely have to re-root your phone though
Sent from my DROID2 GLOBAL using XDA App
thats great to hear that.
thanks
Yeah you'll have to re-root your phone but Z4 still works...I had to re-root mine as well after the OTA...I haven't noticed a difference in battery life tho

Can you get the OTA update if you are not using the phone with Verizon? I unlocked it and I am using another carrier now.

Yes, you can. However it is being reported phone works better without this update on certain GSM networks at least.

Hi leobg! How do you to get this update? You get into some Verizon website? I didnt find any? did you have a bad expirience with Rogers with this update?
Thank you
Go to settings/about phone and tap the top item - system updates. Phone will connect to Motorola update server and will download the update.
Before you do so, make sure you unfreeze all frozen (renames/etc) stock apps, or update will fail to install. You don't have to unroot if your phone is rooted. Update installs fine on rooted phone (tested myself). If phone complains there are no new updates, you can download the update and install it manually from stock recovery (I haven't tried this way since automatic update worked for me, but since the update is signed official update from Motorola it should be able to be installed this way)
Update check does not always work. Sometimes you will see "update check not available at this time" don't get discouraged, just try again later. In theory it should work on both wifi and cellular data, so try both ways.
For me the newer firmware isn't working well. Every few hours the phone loses connectivity without any warning or sign. Phone says I have signal and data connection, but neither i can make calls nor i can receive, same with text messages or internet access. The only way to get it out of this state is to reboot it. I couldn't figure out anything definitive why is this happening, but I get the feeling the dreaded US operator ban protection kicks in. This is not confirmed. Next time i am close to the border i will experiment a bit more with this.
Old firmware seems to work fine. Ever since i am back to initial firmware i have not experienced this bug) i got uptime (without reboot I mean) as long as 10 days (240 hours) without losing connection (including trip to the Caribbean, roaming there both 2g and 3g on all available operators, of course airplane mode while in the air.

I currently have the same issue of loosing connection every now and then but with the old firmware. I am currently in Uruguay and it happens very often, specially when I leave it alone for a few hours. I then grab the phone and it lost the signal. And same, to get the signal I have to either make it check for available networks, or toggle the airplane mode on and off again until it gets the connection. Hummm, maybe it is the radio... In WM it was always advised to flash the radio and get the one that was better for your country and carrier. Is there a way in Android to just flash the radio and not the entire rom?
There is certainly way to flash the radio, radio firmware (also called baseband software) is part of the SBF. The bad thing is there is no other radio firmware than the one from Verizon, neither will be as this phone is Verizon only. Maybe Motorola will update the baseband in future again (it was updated in 2.4.330 if I am not mistaken) to make it better handle foreign networks. Only time will tell.
Sent from my DROID2 GLOBAL
Humm, i wonder if I can install the radio from the Milestone 2 from Argentina alltough it comes with only 2 frequencies: 850 and 1900, so I would be loosing the 2100 one...
I doubt. Baseband chipset is different on the two phones.
No, you can't install the radio from a Milestone to a D2G because they have different chipsets. You will almost certainly brick the phone if you try.
The radio NVM from a global device is almost twice the size of either a CDMA only or GSM only radio NVM because it contains all the settings and parameters for both radios.
Yes, most likely it is not possible. I wonder why is this thing about loosing signal happening outside the US. Maybe it is because the real bands we use abroad are not exactly the nominal ones like 850 or 1900 and in reality it could be like 1901 or the like and then the Verizon radio has that exact number that does not match the one used by a different carrier on a different country...
Sent from my DROID2 GLOBAL using Tapatalk
Is there a way to stop the update from downloading?
I did a check in the phone settings out of curiousity. and it asked to download the OTA, but I cancelled it.
Now it keeps reminding me now and again. A while ago, it downloaded itself LOL was around 20% then I quickly switch off the phone.
You can disable the following apk's in/ system/app to revent OTA:
BlurUpdater_VZW.apk
Fota.apk
Once this is done reboot the phone and enter stock recovery and clear cache.

I can't get any sort of data signal at all from my phone! IT's already been 3 days since this happened and I can't change my APN, nor does switching the modem version work, what do I do?? I would really hate to call AT&T because they'll just blame the phone being rooted and expect me to go back to stock Gingerbread.

Have you tried ODIN back to stock to eliminate any potential external issues? I saw your post yesterday in my APN thread. At this point I would go back to stock and see if that helps and then from there root/flash the ROM of your choice.

I just installed the new CM 10.1 and I have the same problem. Actually I've had it mostly with all the JB softwares out there that I tried. Could the signal problem be related to the IMEI? I think I've lost, indeed, my IMEI by changing to JB but could that be my problem? Yesterday I placed a few phone calls and it worked. Now it just random disconnects and it woun't allow me to make any phonecalls. Also it takes 5-10 minutes before it connects to the network (Vodafone - if it makes any difference). I just figuered it was a modem problem but you got me wondering.
Thanks

Data not working

Hi all, i have some problems with my sensation: my internet connection works only over wi-fi. When i enable data it doesn't happen anything: in the status bar i don't see the H or the 3G icon and i can't connect. I tried everything but i can't find a solution. I'm using the last build of albinoman's rom and the latest sultan kernel. Anyway i don't think it's kernel or rom related because i went back to stock 3.33 firmware and ruu and mobile connection didn't work either. Can someone help me?

So let me get this straight....your mobile data isn't working on either Albino's CM10.1 ROM or a stock Sense ROM. Is that correct?
Do phone calls work? If they do this isn't a hardware problem because the calls and data use the same hardware. So that's good news.
If all the above is true there are still a couple simple things to try.
First off when you did an RUU was the RUU for Itally or Europe or whatever the geographical region for your phone woudl be? If you RUU'ed back to the North American varient for example and you are in Italy it wouldn't have the correct APN's. So jus tmaking sure of that.
Second, check the APN's (Settings->data (Might have to hit MORE under the data)->mobile netwoks. Access point names). Make sure the APN's are set to whatever they are supposed to be for your carrier. A simple google search should tell you what the APN's are supposed to be.
If that APN is messed up, mobile data won't work.
Third, has this been going on fro a while? Or is this just like a day or two? It's always possible that the problem is with your carrier. It never hurts to call them up and make sure their mobile data network isn't down. It coudld also be a problem with your account. I once fought with my phone for 2 days about the same thing only to find that my carrier had accidentaly removed my data plan from my account. A 2 minute phone call and it was fixed. You can check this yourself by putting your SIM card in any other phone and see if data works on that device.
If none of thsoe work come back with as much detail as possible.
Phone calls work so it's not an hardware issue. Besides when i flashed the 3.33 ruu it was european and the apn is set correctly. I don't know if the problem is that i changed carrier a three days ago. I'll try to see if it's that the culprit

If you changed the carrier at the same time the problem appeared then that is almost certainly the answer. The next question is what to do to fix it.
You could have gotten a bad sim card, or didn't switch to their sim card. Or something relating to the sim card.
Are you sure the carrier has a network that is compatible with the Sensation's mobile data hardware?
Sent from your phone. You should be careful where you leave that thing.

Verizon 4G Handoff Fix

I was asked to also post this fix that I came up with in the general forum from the CleanROM thead, as it should help people having the same issue. The issue isn't actually related to that ROM but a broader M8 issue that I was unaware of and thought was specific to the ROM. It's been confirmed with multiple users having the issue that the fix below does indeed fix the random data issues that require a reboot/airplane mode toggle to resolve.
A fix for the 4G --> 3G, WiFi --> 4G, WiFi --> 3G, and 1X/3G --> 4G handoff issues that some people may be having is outlined below...
In a nutshell, we just need to change EVDO Rev A to "Enabled" instead of the 3rd "eHRPD" option in EPST.
Dial ##778 --> Edit Mode --> 000000 --> Modem Settings --> Rev A --> Enable --> Upper Right Corner Menu --> Commit Changes
Might cause a reset data connection with the transition due to a possible new IP or hamper simultaneous voice and data over 3G (which is possible), but it will allow the phone to establish a data connection on its own again and not get stuck on eHRPD 's random buggyness. Should transition back to 4G eventually as well
eHRPD basically for allows switching between LTE and EVDO systems seamlessly (no reset data connection from 4G --> 3G and back, slightly faster speeds, same IP, depends on tower...)
Changing this setting basically tells the modem in your phone to act more like a 3G phone when requesting 3G data access. Bypasses the hybrid-ness and just forces you on the legacy EVDO Rev A. network.
If the phone signal (4G is weak) at the time of the eHRPD transition, it can mess up. This change tells it to not bother with that and when the 4G signal isn't available just revert completely to 3G to register and not wait up for transition info. Makes it more cut and dry, and to be honest it does not really impact things. When the phone detects a 4G solid signal again it will switch back on all its own.
Same issue happened on the HTC Thunderbolt when Verizon was messing with things during initial 4G deployment. Only recent changes are the whole VoLTE ramp up, and that could be the cause of this recent crazyness.
To revert this change:
Dial ##778 --> Edit Mode --> 000000 --> Modem Settings --> Rev A --> eHRPD --> Upper Right Corner Menu --> Commit Changes
Thank you for sharing this! Very good find and positive feedback has been showing in response. Worth a try for everyone having these symptoms.

Isn't Android Revolution HD is in the Generic HTC One M8 section?
Sadly, this only works with VZW based ROMs. Anything with parts taken from other bases, or a GPE ROM it may not work and the code for EPST might be different/EPST might not work and/or the option may not be there.

But to answer the OP, yes. GSM ROMS will not have this option unless the Dev adds it in. Otherwise its a CDMA only function (I believe).

It works on my viperone 1.8, are you on the newer versions that you do not have the new verizon firmware for yet ?
This is great, I come from an HTC One S but also switched between that and a Galaxy Nexus so I could tell a difference in the way my signal acted and we have had signal issues with the HTC One S for quite some time now and it all seemed to stem from when we finally obtained s-off, seemed our One S was never the same, may have been placebo but I was worried it was happening all over again with our blessed M8 lol. The One S was not Verizon and may not be the same issue. I just tried this and it already seems better. Thanks very much. They still have not found a fix for the HTC One S

If you go back to 1.8 then it will probably work for you, 1.8 was the last verizon that worked correctly for your verizon firmware. I was on the 2.3 but had too many wifi issues so I went back to 1.8, which is less wifi issues now with this fix I seem to not have any wifi issues so far so think its working for me. I"am not going to update viperone until the new verizon firmware is out in a zip to flash in recovery, because the wifi issues are not worth it to update now.
Any more successful difference's people have since doing this?
I was listening to a radio show streaming app today on Wi-Fi and the app kept stopping. every 10 minutes or so after trying this fix. It was the first time I listened to this app with this phone but listen to this app all the time with my other phones and never have this issue. It was consistently dropping Wi-Fi and 4g wasn't picking it up. I am running CleanRom with Harmon Kardon. I tried disabling Harmon Kardon to see if that may have been the issue since I am not accustomed to using it yet and it seemed to work better without it but still dropping signal. The signal icons seemed uneffected. I guess I am going to remove Harmon Kardon see if that makes a difference before I revert back from this fix.
I did this and my phone now reverts back to LTE and doesn't get stuck on 3G like it had been doing since day 1. I was getting tired of cycling into and out of airplane mode. Thanks for this advice/fix!
Is this the bug I experience where I have 4G signal, but am "offline"?
If so, that has been driving me nuts. I am on the stock ROM, S-OFF Rooted. Is this present with the off the shelf version?
Reporting back after 3 separate complete wipe/reflash/restores on my M8. Here is my status as of now:
Tuesday: Tried flashing stock recovery and did factory reset. (didn't fix the handoff issue)
Wednesday: Tried flashing RUU then returning back to CleanRom 1.4 (didn't fix the handoff issue)
Thursday: tried the EHRPD fix listed below. So far today NO handoff issues! I don't want to jump the gun, but this appears to have done the trick. I have gone from 1x to 3G to 4G with no issues so far.

If anyone is using the Verizon M8 with a GSM sim and can't access the USSD code ##778# then go into settings -> mobile data -> preferred network -> LTE/CDMA and try running the code again in the dialer. Dont forget to change the preferred network back to Global after applying the fix by the OP.
This has worked great for me. Thanks for posting. Was incredibly frustrating to have to fight with the phone every morning on my way to work to get it to connect to 4g. I had to toggle airplane mode, switch preferred networks and even reboot or some times do all of the above - lol. Thanks again.
Apparently this is a known issue and per Verizon, they're working with HTC to fix it. But I've also read that the problem could be cause by running xposed modules which seemed to be the case with me. I'm s-off running stock and was fine until I installed xposed.

This fix does not impact Wi-Fi directly, just eHRPD for mobile data transitions. Sounds like the app is the problem. Have the same ROM with Harmon Larson installed - no issues.

Is this the bug I experience where I have 4G signal, but am "offline"?
If so, that has been driving me nuts. I am on the stock ROM, S-OFF Rooted. Is this present with the off the shelf version?

Yup. Seems to be impacting certain phones regardless of ROM. I'd give it a shot and see if it helps. If not just change it back.
Big thanks to the OP. I've been dealing with the the eHRPD limbo since I got my phone in April. I live in a low 4g area and was experiencing text and mms problems big time. It was always happening when it was bouncing for 3g and 4g. When I would check the network details it would say eHRPD. I would constantly toggle airplane mode off and on and change network preferences to get it to work. Really annoying. Well I tried this last night and the signal is staying in 4g almost all the time and I have experienced no problems with messaging. I am running Viper 1.8 and had to kind of guess to find the edit button after entering the numbers in the dialer, for some reason the Edit button did not show up but it was there when tapped on it. After that it was easy. Thanks again for the help. I wish Verizon was as good.

Poor cell phone reception with new ROMs

Does anyone here have issues with poor cell phone reception after installing new roms? I have a Razr HD XT926 4.4.2 running a unlocked but stock rom because everytime I go to another rom (I have tried 10+ different roms) I end up getting poor cell phone reception. In my apartment I typically get 2-3 bars on verizon but with new roms I get 0-1 bars and when I am outside I never get more than 2 when I normally get 4+. This is preventing me from using any rom because I absolutely cannot be without reception for work.
All roms install just fine but just this issue. Anyone else have this?
Thanks
Anyone else having this problem? No one?

Hey! So, I came here to try and find some help on this issue or post myself if nothing else. I also have an XT926 4.4.2 with unlocked bootloader on stock rom. I have tried many different roms and personally I love PacRom, but no matter what rom besides stock that I use, I can not get Mobile Data. I haven't checked the cell reception, but the mobile data does not work at all until I wipe and go back to stock. It's really frustrating because I would love to use a different rom other than stock. I do have xposed running on stock, but it can not give me everything a custom rom can. If anyone knows a fix to this, please let us know!

Do you mean like changing all the settings and apns in there? And hitting that checkbox? Yeah it works on stock, but it does not do anything on a custom rom. I have calling and texting, but no mobile data.

yes, not as extreme as you, but from what I've read along the way its common to all AOSP roms. My battery life is noticeably worse because its searching for signal.

Hmm... I am on stock at the moment, but I will go to a custom rom for a bit again probably tomorrow to mess around with the settings again. Either way I will post what I tried and possibly screenshots for maybe more help on my part or to help others if they have the same situation. I just have no idea what needs to be changed. I tried copying the apn settings from stock, but that didn't seem to work. Maybe I did something wrong or missed a step or something. I'll be back tomorrow. Thanks!
