This is more just a general question of your opinion. I can't believe it's been almost a year and no bootloader unlock. I would have loved to see CM running on this device. It almost makes me want to go back to HTC because they openly allow the bootloader to be unlocked. IMO I think we have reached as best as we can with the echo ROM. I uninstalled it due to it not having much benefits. What are your thoughts on this device? Do you think we will ever see a bootloader unlock or is devolopment dead on this device?
I believe that development might pick up again with nougat's official January (i believe) release because it offers much more than Marshmallow. Maybe we'll get an official bootloader unlock or some dev on his spare time finds a way to do it. CM either way is only being made personally through devs now (closed its doors yesterday) but there will be a forthcoming with LineageOS from the same team.
Yeah I read about cm and lineage. So if I'm understanding. An OS update could provide a new vulnerability and allow an unlocked bootloader?
Keyword there is could. Hopefully some progress down the line would be nice and if we got to start a prize pot for it, I wouldn't mind.
I would definitely kick in some money to a bootloader unlock bounty. Right now my only 2 complaints with the s7 are lack of custom roms and not being able to find a good full coverage glass screen protector. If I can help one of those I will. I am half tempted to sell my tmo s7 and buy an exynos s7 because there seems to be more development there. But I'll wait for nougat.
jah feel
I feel your pain. When I first planned on getting the S7, I was excited about getting a sexy-design phone with better specs and putting all my music on the phone via a 128GB SD card and chilling out with ViPER4Android... but that was all a dream. I've been very hesitant to go through with the current root method because from what I've read, there are tons of bugs to deal with and tons of tweaks to do to not get very far in the end. I'm honestly very sad about this purchase. If I had more time to research the locked bootloader issue, I would have gone with a different phone. But my S5 finally gave up and I had to get a new phone ASAP. I would also pitch in for a bootloader unlock or something. I mainly want a stable phone with ViPER4Android. Can't live without it... it's been hell. Halp pl0x.
I would definetely pay for an unlocked bootloader also. The exynos definitely seems to have more devolpment than the u.s. But I'm rooted and after flashing a fix+debloat and installing Xposed everything is running smooth. It would be awesome to see more devolepment though.

Can you link me to the posts about the fix+debloat you flashed please? I have tried rooting and couldn't figure out how to fix the super slowness and the overheating. Also, what Firmware are you running?

According to NighthawkXL it may benifit us, he says it looks good on paper, but implementing the exploit tk a device is a different ball game, i beleive it will help acheive an exploit for the samsung bootloader, but only time will tell

Do take my statement with a grain of salt however. It'll probably be a few days before Surge & Co. make any statements regarding this exploit. The big question though is if this is Dan Rosenberg's TrustZone kernel exploit that he'll be showing off at Blackhat in August or if this something else in the code for LittleKernel.
I have been wondering that since i first saw it, guess we will have to wait and see, has anyone asked him about it, or has he commented at all on the subject?

I doubt it, and even so he'll likely decline to comment. He and XDA have had fallout of sorts...
Thats is quite unfortunate, ive hear ppl say the same, but im not to sure what happened, would love to kno if u have time to pm me, but either way he is a great dev, and hopefully this is a great find

Something might get an unlock from this but not likely to be a Sammy device. Ryanbg, jeboo and myself all looked into it before finding out from a couple of highly reliable sources that Samsung devices aren't effected, including ralekdev (he also was the one who reported it).

Anyone who would like to use fastboot/adb for this device please use the following version fastboot/adb. It's HTC's own version. It works on pc's with less ram and it automatically breaks up a single zip into pieces for transfer. It also reflashes automatically if needed.

I managed to figure out the firmware largely due to dottat. There were multiple threads of various age, some with seemingly conflicting advice. This goes for most device forums I follow. There was no authoritative resource, IMO, until this thread.
The search feature was key, I am pretty thorough before embarking in firmware upgrades.

Your OP does contain the required information and instructions, so I can't really complain. One thing that could be helpful is to list the bootloader version info for each firmware release. You listed the most recent one right at the top of the thread, so at least it is easy to tell whether a given device is on the latest firmware or not. Because your thread is the main firmware thread, perhaps it would be best if the OP were organized into sections for 4.4.2, 4.4.3, and 4.4.4. It could be clarified which partitions are modified in the process, and whether the radios are affected. Install instructions could be put in their own spot.
These are only ideas! Also, your thread should probably be stickied. Thanks for all you do.

Firmware flash
Hello everyone. I am new to this Forum. I've only been here a few days. I have an Unlocked/S-Off Verizon HTC One M8 that I recently purchased from Ebay. I had a little trouble for a while when I first got it as it was running 4.4.2 and I took the OTA update to 4.4.3 and it messed up the phone. I didn't know it was Unlocked/S-Off'd. And the seller said it wasn't rooted any more. Well so now that I know it is even after running the Verizon RUU, I was wondering if I need to upgrade the firmware one upgrade at a time (meaning 4.4.3 and then 4.4.4)? Or can I jump to a 5.01 Lollipop ROM? I have TWRP installed and I used Flashify to install it. I'm hoping to use Flashify more for installing zips. Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you....oh and I'm loving this M8!!!!

Rom and firmware are to separate things. You can flash straight to 4.4.4 firmware and then flash a lollipop Rom or any custom Rom.

Hello dottat. Thank you for replying to my question(s). Yes I know that a ROM is different than firmware. I was just wondering if I had to upgrade my firmware one update at a time or if I could just jump from 4.4.2 to say 5.0 or 5.01 so that if I wanted to I could put a custom ROM on my M8. I'm not actually sure how high the firmware upgrades go. I've only seen 4.4.4 as the highest so far.

update process on factory unlocked VZW M8 used with GSM
Hi!
I am getting a verizon factory unlocked model and i am going to use it on a GSM network in india.Since its factory unlocked there should be no issues with the network. .however i had some doubts about the software updates. .so will i be able to receive and install updates normally without resorting to rooting the phone. .some people reported that they had an issue installing the update where it said that they have to be on CDMA or something like that. .Will i be able to overcome such issues by connecting to wifi?Is someone could shed a little light on how the update process works when used abroad with a GSM carrier it would be great!Thank you so much in advance!

You will always be able to install the s-on ruu from here. The problem is that the latter versions of software while sim unlocked have proven very difficult to use on some carriers because you can no longer edit apn. You have to chose from pre-provided apn and thats only if they show up with your SIM card inserted.
You would be really wise to s-off the phone even if you don't root it as this would be the only way to downgrade if you ended up not having a workable situation on the newer software.
Running a HTC M8 on 5.0.1 and I have searched but have been out of the rooting business since my S3. Can it be done? If so, can someone please direct me to the appropriate links? Unfortunately, the sunshine app is your best bet but you (and I) need to wait for it to be updated. There is another method, but it would require you to find someone with a java card. You can find more info about the java method in the forums. I thought about it, but i'm going to try and hold out for an updated sunshine app, hopefully it comes out before our next Verizon update so that any possible exploit is not blocked by verizon..
But until we get root, there are a few things you can do. There is the Google launcher or the Nova launcher, Adblockplus works on WiFi and there is also the Adblockplus browser for when you are not on WiFi, and the greenify app does have some limited functionality without root access.
If any of you guys are near PA I have a Java card and can do s-off

The last phone I rooted & installed Cyanogenmod on was an S3 & I loved it. The battery became an issue & I moved on to the HCT One M8 from Verizon. I typically wait until the first year of warranty is up before rooting. Well, never again will I wait as all the exploits are patched & Im stuck w/ the stock ROM & I am really missing Cyanogenmod. I live in the Greensburg area of PA, but not sure about driving to York PA for the Java card, though that is extremely nice of the person who offered. I am subscribing to this thread; as I cant find any root methods & look at least several times a week.

I typically wait until I've had the phone 30-40 minutes before rooting and installing TWRP and a custom rom.
Personally, I'd drive to York if I lived where you do. Since I'm 2,250 miles away I'd send the phone. As always, YMMV.

Hi guys, been lurking these forums off and on for awhile but I finally decided to make an account in attempt to my root my S5.
Generally I have a decent technical understanding of the android system but root is something i've never dived into completely so I had some questions and concerns. My biggest concern is that I attempted to root the phone a few months ago (I believe it was with..kingroot? if that sounds right) but failed, I'd like to try to root successfully but am wondering if the previous attempt could mess anything up and if so, how to fix that.
I was only wondering what exactly I would need to root the device, as in downgrading OS(?) or if only certain models are elligible or the like. Last but not least Id be interesting in finding the "best" rooting tutorial (assuming the stickied one isnt)
Thanks a lot guys, looking forward to getting into this!

If you are on builds OE1 or OG5 you cannot root, downgrade, or do anything. You are stuck with stock. If you have anything before OE1 you have options.
Thanks for the replies guys sorry I wasnt more specific. Im running Android 5.0 and my build number is LRX21T.G900VVRU2BOG5 , is that what you mean by build? If so, is the root for it just not figured out yet or is there something stopping the device from being rooted permanently?

Hi, I recently damaged my S4 and decided to upgrade to the S6, so far I love the phone, got it new for $250
However since it's with straight talk in not one of the more common models and I can't really seem to find any information on it, I'm mostly hoping to find a way to root it, a custom recovery would be nice but I certainly don't need it
Has anyone had any experience with this device?
Or could someone maybe point me in the right direction?
Device: Galaxy S6 (Straight Talk)
Model: SM-S907VL
Baseband: S907VLUDU1APG8 (idk if that's important lol)
Android: 6.0.1
I appreciate any help that you guys might be able to give
I am looking for the same!
Would like to root and install CM.
Samsung S6 SM-907VL
I too got the "Black Friday" deal with this phone. It is Straight Talk and is a nice phone. I emailed a popular rooting developer and they have a list a mile long with phones their app will root. But it will not root this model. If someone finds an app that will root, please post.
Looking to root this model too. Could you flash a rom from one that uses the same board and chip set? Essentially turning it from a straight talk phone to Verizon , sprint, or at&t then proceed to root from there? Might be a noob question but I been wondering if it would work

Well hopefully we can hear back soon, I've still had pretty much no luck with this model, seems it's too little know for anything custom yet
Has anyone tried KingRoot?
I've tried Kingroot a few times now, the device is not supported unfortunately
Need root and 7.0 rom!
Seriously been looking for root since I got this phone. Is anyone even working on a root for it? Would the root for sm-s903vl work for the sm-s907vl or would it brick it? At this point I don't even care if I trip Knox. I just want ROOT!!
Fruitless searching for method to root sm-s907VL S6
Has anyone found anywhere that has information about rooting this model or atleast maybe the news that someone is working on it?! I have searched and searched and tried several different methods but nothing has worked yet. I really like this phone so far but I really gotta have my customization fix for it. Thank you to anyone who can give me some hope and of course if I find anything I'll post it here.
Thanks
I don't suppose anyone has had any luck with this device?
I'm having trouble finding stock firmware as well, I was thinking I might try a couple methods for different models but that's a little foolish without a way back to stock...
As a side note, don't buy straight talk phones, nothing seems to exist for them xD
You can get the stock software at www.firmware.gem-flash.com... I've used their copy personally and had no problems..
Device: Galaxy S6 (Straight Talk)
Model: SM-S907VL
I have the same issue and have tried several root tools and none have worked yet. Maybe some devs will get it working for one of them soon.
I have tried everything. If there is somebody smart enough to root the galaxy s6 s907vludu through straightalk please let me know. I have been searching for months. If anybody can find something for this unrootable phone please let me know.
I have model s906l it's an early sts6 and Im currently running s907vl firmware. I think the s906l can be rooted but it's running Android 5.02. My point being if you really want root maybe you can flash the s906l firmware using oden. Update nope I was able to flash up but cant flash back down. Stuck on mm without root for now.

I don't think you can downgrade an OS. Bootloaders would normally not allow it.
I tried flashing the 5.0.2 SM-S906L rom on the SM-S907VL through Odin and it gives a secure boot check fail.

Thanks

I am having the same issue, I have the S6 SM-S907VL as well, I am very pleased with the phone itself as well as the cell carriers service but not having any developers hacks & mods or stock firmware or rooting methods for it is really frustrating

I don't suppose anyone has had any luck with this device?
I'm having trouble finding stock firmware as well, I was thinking I might try a couple methods for different models but that's a little foolish without a way back to stock...
As a side note, don't buy straight talk phones, nothing seems to exist for them xD

I have the same model also I wish now that never seen it. I've had an LG Stylo 3, and Motorola phone all of which I could easily download a ROM from here and easily customize the phone. This phone has proven impossible.

Any new updates on a possible root and custom rom for the SM-S907VL? Starting to look like we're out of luck :/
