no LTE after a call on D820 - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently replaced my old N5 D820 (due to a battery issue) with a "like new" one from eBay. Problem is... Device looses LTE 4G connectivity after a phone call. It remains stuck on HSPA (3G) until the radio recycles from airplane mode or reboot. I've also seen intermittent "no service" issues.
I've upgraded and flashed back multiple stock ROMs from 5.1.1 to latest 6.01 to try to find a solution in the stock ROM versions, with no success. I've disabled location and Wi-Fi settings. Same result.
Network service is AT&T. I've called their support and they've provisioned the new IMEI. I've experimented with the *#*#4636#*#* phone testing menu setting including putting the phone LTE-only, and end up with "no service" after calls until a power cycle.
My old one never seemed to have this LTE issue/behavior. Any ideas?

Try reflshing radios. I was using the 4.4.2 radio, it is most battery friendly, but since a week i run latest radio. seems as good as the old one

No 3G service in Charlotte, NC

Just last night my EVO 4G running Energy ROM version 1.10.2012 suddenly stopped receiving 3G service. There is usually a 3G icon, but it's gone. Can't enable GreenK45 or anything. I've done two manual reboot (battery pulls) and even changed the PRL. Very frustrated as nothing I've tried has worked. It will still make and receive calls but states there is no data connection when doing anything involving connecting to the internet.
Any ideas?
Your carrier might be roaming on another carrier who uses a different frequency. EG. AT&T uses 850/1900, T-Mobile 1700/2100. Most phones will only support 1 set of 3g bands.
So I don't know if it was something with the ROM as a power saving feature but it had unchecked the "Mobile network" connection box. I definitely didn't uncheck it, and it was the last thing I looked at before about giving up to reflash the phone.
So is the issue resolved?

[Q] no LTE

I have a verizon gs3 that is rooted, running beanstalk 4.4.251-20140301-d2lte. I can't get LTE to work correctly. I can get LTE to turn on if I change my 'preferred network type' to LTE/GSM/WCDMA, but then I have no verizon signal (voice signal). When I have it on 'global', I can get 3G and verizon signal, but never any LTE.
This has been going on for quite some time. I've switched between all of the 'preferred network types' but its always 4G and no cell signal, or 3G with cell signal. I used to be on CM 11 nightlies, thought that might be the issue. I switched to Beanstalk, but have the same issue. Just yesterday, I updated my firmware from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1788313
Is there something obvious that I'm missing?

I have the EXACT same issue, so you're not alone! Unfortunately, I have no answer for this either.
I was running CM11 (just the stable releases), started noticing lack of LTE a few weeks ago, decided to give SlimKat a try. The ROM is damn near flawless besides this LTE issue. I could actually never get it go into LTE mode through the normal settings, it would always fall back to 3G (and I'm in the middle of a capital city where there's plenty of 4G coverage). However, if I did that *#*#4636#*#* trick to go into testing mode, I could force it into "LTE Only", at which point the phone would be in LTE mode, and enjoy the blazing fast data speeds I pay for .... but can no longer make phone calls.
Anyone else out there experienced this or something similar? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
After doing some research on it, I decided to flash back to stock and unroot. After that, I still could not get 4G, so I took it into the verizon store. I told him the problem, and that I had heard that it needed a new sim card. After doing some simple test, he burned a sim card for me and that did it! I'm thinking that soon after I flashed a CM11 nightly (a month ago at least) I dialed *228 to update my cell coverage. I think that might have fried it. I have limited knowledge on this topic, but I did read somewhere that dialing *228 on some custom roms is not good.
It would be nice if you could take it in to the store without flashing back to stock, but I'm not sure if they would go for that or not.

[Q] Problem with 3G radio on HTC Doubleshot - uplink dead, downlink ok

I've been happily using an HTC MT4G Slide/Doubleshot I got on Ebay since December (I'm in Canada, using it with Wind Mobile, AWG 3G bands). Last Sunday my phone suddenly started showing "No Signal" for the cellular connection (wifi still works just fine), even though I had full signal bars, and I was unable to complete calls, even the *611 carrier service calls. With the Wifi turned off, I noticed I was still receiving emails, oddly enough, even though I could not register on my network. My SIM was working fine in other phones, and a SIM from another carrier (GSM 2G only) worked just fine. I tried a new SIM from my carrier, no luck, same thing.
I know AWS splits its up/downlinks between the 2 sets of bands it uses (1700MHz for up, 2100MHz for down), so I'm guessing something strange happened to selectively knock out the up bands only. But what? My phone is on EmmanuelU's KitKatDS 1.3, but the only unusual thing I could think of software wise was that I had recently updated Xposed framework to the latest version. I though maybe that did something weird to the baseband firmware, so I restored the original stock Gingerbread ROM via ClockworkMod - no change. I applied the available OTA updates from T-Mo - nothing. Re-flashed KitKatDS & restored by current set-up - nothing.
I'm completely stumped and seriously starting to worry it's some freak hardware thing. Anyone here ever experience something like this?
Thanks for any of your thoughts!
Never seen this myself before, check your apns would be my next step. Maybe try *#*#4636#*#* from the dialer and see if what it says there too. But mostly I'm stumped

[Q] 4g data drops often...too often

i have to reboot in order for the 4g data to work again but it only stays on for about a minute and then it stops working again. everything else on the phone works ( text, voice, wifi etc...) I read somewhere that flashing different radios might fix it but im not sure about that. anyone else experience this and have a work around? i am currently on baseband i535VRLG1
Thanks In advance
i called Verizon and they said it may be the sim card thats damaged. if that were the case wouldnt voice and text fail as well?

I'm having the same issues recently. I've always gotten a 4G signal at my house (albeit not the strongest one) but lately, my phone will not hold on to the connection. When coming off of wifi, my phone will not acquire a data connection at all most of the time. I can still send/receive texts and calls but there is no 4G or 3G icon, no MMS, and no data. I have to toggle the radios on/off, or change from CDMA/LTE to Global (or GSM) and back, put in airplane mode, or restart.....there is no guarantee any one of those steps will work. Sometimes I have to do it repeatedly until I get my data connection back but it is only temporary.
I'm on the i535VRBMF1 baseband and updated to the ML1 modem to try and resolve but to no avail. I have replaced my sim card (as I initially though that was the issue) but it has not helped either.
The only thing I can think of is that my PRL may have been updated (it is currently 15310) and it's causing issues with the towers in my area.
I just got back from Hawaii and was also in San Diego for a few days and had absolutely no issues. It seems to only be an issue now when I'm at my house which makes me think it is something VZW network related and nothing to do with my phone per say. It's really driving me nuts though.
BTW, I'm in Southern California (Irvine).
I seemed to have fixed the issue by reverting the baseband back to vrlf2. I had to switch from global to 4g/LTE because I vegan to inch roaming charges lol. Verizon credited me and no dropped 4g signal. So I'm happy.

What ROM are you running? I'm just curious what the implications are of running an older baseband (from the ICS days) on a newer ROM/Kernel.
I'm running cleanrom8.1 core edition. Slightly buggy but tolerable.
I was finally able to somewhat resolve my issue so I thought I'd post in case anyone else is experiencing something similar.
By using a few different apps and testing techniques, I was finally able to deduce that my issue had to do with EHRDP hand-off with the towers in the immediate vinicity to my house. I'm not sure what VZW did to them lately but it doesn't appear to be a problem in other locations so it seems like the issue is on their end (and not something to do with my phone).
In any case, it seems that when my 4G connection is weak and EHRDP is detected, it is dropping the connection entirely instead of handing if off to 3G (EVDO). The connection is also never transferred back when a 4G signal is detected either until I reset the connection where there is a moderate 4G signal.
Again, this only seems to be an issue when connected to the towers near my house and doesn't occur when traveling abroad.
To fix this, I have disabled EHRDP by doing the following:
1) Open the dialer and type *#97328640#
2) Select "[2] CDMA"
3) Select "[2] Data"
4) Select "[7] eHRPD e/disable"
5) Select "[2] Disable(*)"
6) Reboot the phone
Now my phone switches between EVDO revA. for 3G (using the native protocols) and LTE rather than relying on the broken eHRDP protocols. This workaround will have to suffice until VZW fixes stuff in my area but at least I don't miss MMS messages anymore.
Hope this helps anyone running into similar situations.

GSM / data signal loss

Hello everyone,
I would like to share big problem what I have and killing me.
Sometimes (1 time in a day or 1 time in 2 days), GSM signal is lost and I have to restart my nexus. What I have done so far,
* I checked my IMEI number and that's OK
* I checked my sim card againts to damages and scratches and that's OK. But these is gap between sim tray and card by ~1mm. The gap is only on long side of tray, short side is fully matched.
* I checked signal power and asked to carrier (TR AVEA) and that's OK.
* I installed hidden menus from Google Play then go to setting -> testing menu -> Phone Info
- preferred mode : GSM auto (PRL)
- If I select "select radia band" from pull-down menu, only one possibilities "USA Band". Even If select this, GSM and data signal loss.
- I tried another carrier sim card (Vodafone TR) and applied same settings above (USA Band), and failed again.
- I understand that "USA Band" is not suitable for us
My device is D821(E) and use 4.4.3 full stock firmware. No root, locked.
Can anyone help me? Thank.
After I updated to 4.4.3 (via purity ROM and Flashing the new Radio/Baseband) I noticed my data connection was constantly droppping in and out
So today I decided to flash the old radio from KRT16M (4.4.2) to see if it made a difference and it seems to have so far. I haven't had any loss of connection in the 2hrs since flashing, whereas on the new radio it was constantly dropping in and out. I will test for longer but i think the new radio in 4.4.3 may not be optimised for some networks (i'm on Optus in Australia)

2 months ago, someone from Turkey who use same carrier (TR AVEA) has noticed signal loss problem with 4.4.2
I remember that he has mentioned neither stock and customs has same problems. I think this is completely baseband problem.

Also had to revert to 4.4.2 radio wasn't receiving incoming calls with the 4.4.3,don't think it really matters which you use though

I had same problem. Devs seem to think radios are the same for both phones. If they are why are there different models for usa and Europe? If you put a usa radio in uk phone it will work poorly as it has SOME bands and vice versa i found one marked d21 radio and back to normal. You are treated as a moron for thinking that the radios differ. Look at Wikipedia

Can you please share the name of baseband that you found?
And I checked the wikipedia and could not find any useful things as you said.
This is a photograph of the baseband I put in and another of the different frequencys the two phones use. Using D20 in uk drastically affects h+ as you will see by the difference

Here
# 47386
On lte , which includes h+on most, you can see the d20 radio is usless in the UK i was getting h at best and 3g most. Now im back to h+all the time. The experts say that there is no difference so take your pick.

Same baseband that I use with 4.4.3 OTA.
I always use 3G "Preferred Network" option.
Same problem here with the new 4.4.3 radio. Incredibly weak LTE signal (fine if I select 3G in Mobile Networks) and sometimes no signal at all. I may try flashing the older radio this evening.
I realised it was happening more often when my gps was locked.. As soon as i switched off gps my signal restored..
Running rooted 4.4.3 stock rom
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
I'm still having some issues with the older radio, not as many as with the new, so there may be something inherent in the 4.4.3 update as well, this is annoying as my phone was running perfect on 4.4.2, may have to restore my backup
Really nice phone and cool design.
But weird problems without solution

Guessing from the last line, you had updated to 4.4.3 through OTA? You could try to reflash the radio img but that would require you to has custom recovery.

That's because flashing different modem images (D280/D281) does not change your available phone bands. It is a hardware limitation, nothing to do with with firmware.
That was not on my phone. I put it on. As you can see in the pic above there is a world of difference between the two models. Depending on where you are if you get a d20 radio in a d21 your going to get no data like i did
# 47386
As far as I know, it depends on your network capabilities. I have a D281 running the latest D280 radio, everything works as fine. Faster LTE even.
am not sure what is wrong too but am facing this issue quite a lot as well. But it is not restricted to Nexus 5 only. I have another phone Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 and face the same issue.
Am not sure what to do on this, however, after some search I found a site where the author claims it gets fixed after uninstalling updates of the following apps:
Google Launcher
Google Search
Google Maps
Google Hangouts
Google Newstand
One or more amongst the apps might be causing some issues. See if it fixes your problems. I will be trying it too but will uninstall all updates from one of the above applications at a time to see which app is the real culprit. Please share with all of us in case you get to know before me or have another solution for us to try.
PS: Hit 'Thank You;' if this helps.
