[Question]2 cores are working only? - Sony Xperia XZ Questions & Answers

Guys can you check in your phone how many cores are working at a time? I see only two cores working at a time and i think they are the slower ones
Any impact coz of this?

i have checked with cpu-x app and all 4 cores are working simultaniously

Firmware ver.? Single sim or dual SIM?

Ive noticed this aswell on 7.0, and my antutu score went down from around 139000 on 6.0 to around 127000 on 7.0. I would say its a huge performance loss. But real life performance i havent noticed any difference, but not in batterlife either so id rather have my cores back.

me too, since i switched back to stock build 39.2.A.0.327 benchmarck highest score i could get is 130355 and battery seems worse too, i used to have like more than 138000 and very decent battery life with Frago's Nougat Rom, so i've flashed it back on... no rooted stock build for me anymore i guess...

Same issue here, I tested with CPU-Z and CPU-X and is the same result, only 2 cores working.
Firmware: .327 (Nougat)
Region: Malaysia
Model: F8332
So, I think that is a bug of the reads, beacuse if you perform a Benchmark, the results are the same that when you use Marshmallow (with 4 cores).

Might be possible... I hope this is the case

No, i tested with benchmark software, it is 40% lesser mark compare the 6.0
I feel lag after updated to nougat.
And my old z3 is faster than XZ now.
Used to have at least 120k marks.

i'm on 7.0 nougat and on antutu i did 144.000. It's good? which is the best score for the xz?

7.0 39.2.A.0.361 Orange MCV FR/ES/PL/SK/RO
I was suprised to hear that so i've been testing my device with antutu, usually core 2 and 3 ( max 2150mhz) are off, but i think it's probably due to nougat update, once i saw them all working for a sec.
My scores are between 147k and 115k.
First highest score with rather cool device, room temperature 24C, WIFI, BT, internet connection, NFC, Auto rotation: OFF, screen brightness on- set to minimum.
After few tests device got hotter and scores dropped to about 125k. Then i tried to push it to the limit, all ON, screen brightness auto-set to max. Score dropped to 115k.
So throttling is there definitively. Score around 130k can show how device will behave in normal use and it is fast as it should be. In case of my device, battery life has improved but it might be placebo effect

After update to latest nougat, the another 2cpu is back, but only for some minutes.

I just updated the cpu-z, and it is showing all 4 cores working, at 2.15ghz can't make a screen shot because it is moving quickly to 1.5 or it stops.
Edit: forgot too say that I'm using stock rom, 7.0........ 39.2.A.0.374.

Checked and sadly I got the same problem :'(. Hope they fix it soon.

Um... So what kind of CPU load are you putting on your phone in order to make all 4 cores to work simultaneously? In other words, why are you expecting to see all 4 cores active in CPU-Z in the first place?
If your phone has nothing serious to do at the time, then even 2 cores being active is too much. You should see only 1.

I tried play high end game - HIT and switched to see, CPUZ still showed only 2 cores are active.
While after 30 mins-45 mins of playing, it became laggy and not responding until I restart that game.

CM7 with a ICS Theme and even though i dont use BT i still need to flash this? Where do i find such a God given thing? lol
Sorry, for some reason i thought you said matr1x 14.5. The bluetooth bugfix is, as far as i know, only for ICS ROMs (bluetooth is always "ready" to turn on, which forces only top=on time). Turning on Screen Off Max Freq will hopefully give you some deepidle time.

Thanks bud. Not to be a nooob and all but how long does it take to initiate?
I'll get some top=off time after about 20 seconds with nothing at all in the background and using matr1x 14.5, stock ics, 100/1200, lazy and screen off max freq. I would say if you don't have anything after a 2 or 3 minutes it's not activating for some reason.

Cool ill check that out. What ROM/KERNEL combo do u have? what the battery life on that 100/1200 set up?
Cool ill check that out
I said the ROM and kernel in the post and it's in my sig too. With 4 hours of gaming and 2 hours of general internet browsing i got around 12 hours with weak 3G signal. Battery drops very little with no use, somewhere around 5%/10 hours. I havn't noticed any major battery drain OCing to 1200, just a little bit of heat on demanding games. Drain is proportional to increase in perfermance most of the time.
I'd definitely be confident going 2 days with a single charge as long as screen time is kept under a couple hours. ATM i'm playing around with different governors to get better battery life, deep idle won't be any use to me for another month or so.

This is know as the CAM bug which was fixed in ics kernels. Every time you reboot the phone your camera is active and prevents the deep idle from working. Opening and closing a camera app closes it and deep idle can start working.
Isn't the cam bug only fixable by disabling/removing google talk (or installing the non-video one)? Otherwise you are forced to open and close a camera app each time you reboot to get any top=off values.
Also, i mean true stock, google OTA. The NS4G doesn't have this yet.

Could you please explain what does screen off max freq do ? I have tried to get into those things May be now is a nice time
While screen is off, allow the processor to use max frequency (stock is 1000mhz). This allows "race-to-idle" which the hardware is capable of, effectively reducing the amount of time the CPU is processing (and therefore powered), reducing power consumption and further allowing deep-idle to work.

[Q] Nexus 5 SoC/CPU temperature

Hi all.
I am interested in locating the current SOC/CPU temperature on an Android Nexus 5 under operation. It is easy to retrieve the CPU frequency for each core by reading of the values from /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu1/cpufreq/scaling_cur_freq while the phone is connected to a client - but the SoC temperature is usually found in different locations - based on the device / SoC vendor.
The device under test - holds a Snapdragon 800 / Hammerhead, revision 2.2, Plattform version 65536 - running Android 4.4.2
Our interest is to correctly identify when the device starts to throttle the frequency - and to report the accurate temperature at that moment. The work is used within the context of academic research. My role as a student is to identify how high temeperatures can affect throughput in computing intensive environments - and thus, more accurately provide reproducable results.
I am not interested in locating an app for this. I am interested in locating the thermal endpoint that reports the operating temperatue of the SoC. I am going to write the app myself - and dont need the overhead and interference of background services.
We have previously done this with the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, running on a Texas Instruments based SoC (OMAP) - but as noted, different vendors, different locations.
I tried to ask for this information on the Qualcomm developer forums, but their boards function quirky.
In advance. Thank you.
I can tell you that the frequency throttle is 60c based upon the stock kernel.
the suspend temperature is 60c
the core throttle is 80c
core throttle suspend temperature is stock 80c
the temp in which the device will throttle untiul reduced is 5c, the core throttle temp hysteresis is 10.

Bah, he will re read it in this case with all the explanation given, just a head up... He will finally understand some things about "pseudo" overheating?
I also replied in some of these threads here with the same thing, like you, these thread topics/questions/posts about "Nexus 5 hot, overheating, too hot etc..." like in the Nexus 4 section bother me, but it's just my opinion...
If not, I'm sorry to use the search function (quickly right)...
In any case it's not the goal of the OP to know "Why is my N5 overheating when I'm playing for 15 mins an heavy game" or something like that, I was replying to Algotis...

people tend to embellish, make things sound better than they actually are. if you see who is saying that their phones hot or not, youll notice people that are new to xda, or dont post much, that say their phone doesnt heat up. yet, you see more people who have been on xda a while, or post more often, post that the phone can get hot. personally, i believe in being truthful and honest, even if the truth isnt good.
We attempted to measure the temperature from the following thermal sensor location:
/sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone7/temp
The idea came from a forum post about CPU temperature measurement on Nexus 4 devices - where the vendor was Qualcomm as well.
I cannot confirm that this is the correct measurement point, but it does raise and fall based on workload - and the values make sense as they represents temperatures from 30-75 C.
Looking at the following measurements, leave little doubt that the temperature throttels. The frequency drops down to 1.2-1.5 GHZ after a few minutes.

Antutu v6.0 is now available

Many years looking the same... but now antutu is completely redesigned and looks really nice.
You can now compare chipsets performance also ...
I know that lot's of people don't like it but many others do... I do!
Have a look... I bet you'll all like the new antutu...
I scored 69k at first test using Mokee
Just to let you know
41k on sMIUI 12.3
69K?! O.O
You make me want to try Mokee
44k on my overly crowded sMIUI. Looking at LG G4 score, we should be able to reach that point so 69k is the expected score.

Not sMIUI fault I believe, when it was still virgin I can manage 5Xk too on antutu 5. With aqua mail (3 accounts), facebook, hangouts, line, path, twitter, plurk, slack, whatsapp and many other background apps, it's hard to reach that score back.

On sMiUI 12.10 my phone scored 65k. Forgot to take screenshot.
As States before... 69k on my Mokee... But... It is more 70k than 69... Anyway, what a machine
Ooops... 70K... Getting better! Now with a few more apps installed... So I guess it has to do with the ROM... The apps you have installed have nothing to do with antutu score i guess... Just saying...

Restarted again, ran on battery got 60070...hmmm

Our device will get slower when it's hot due to thermal throttling, the thermal engine controls both CPU and GPU. When charging, especially when it's over 60%, the temperature will reach a high value that may exceed the threshold imposed by the thermal engine. Thus, either the core speed will be clocked down (CPU0-3 max 600, CPU4-5 max 864) or they will be totally off. Same with GPU (max 300 when hot, 600 when normal). I think Xiaomi didn't notice that many of its customers live in the equator lines where the temperature is generally warm to hot (25-35) so the threshold values will be reached much sooner than those who use the phone in norther or souther area.
It's true... But in this version of antutu the scores dont get uch a diferente after 2 or 3 tests... In previous version I used to get 57k, then 54k and then 50k... In this version I get 70k, 69k and then 69k again... Not much of a diference in results after heating... Why would this happen? I never get less than 69k

Having a screenshot of Android Assistant (both Monitoring and Processes tabs) might help the analysis.
Around 70k is a very bad score I must say, for our hardware.

TBH, that's not bad since you can buy FOUR Mi4C for an iPhone 6s. Twister Core in Apple A9 is the best single core processor to date (which Snapdragon 820 Kyro cores might be able to beat when it comes out seeing latest benchmark info). Our Snapdragon 808 is even nowhere near 810, how could you expect it would beat Apple A9? Here's the official AnTuTu list for each SoC:
IPhone 6s with 57k... In your dreams. Mrkubix go to sleep...
Sd820 still does not beat iPhone single core performance... Dont know how they did that twister... But they did it very well... Typhoon was already wonderful...

Overclock MTCD/MTCB RK3188 Quad Core CPU from 1.6 to 1.8?

On rockchip's website they listed a play store app called SetCPU that could be used for overclocking the CPU. Has anyone tested this with good results? Searching on google, it seems that other people have been able to overclock the RK3188 CPU from stock 1.6ghz to 1.8ghz+ successfully. However, the overclocked RK3188 chip was in a miniPC rather than an Android Head Unit.

Seems overclocking is locked by the kernel- we're limited to adjusting the governor through Kernel Adiutor, No-frills CPU Control, and SetCPU.
ptclabs said:
with that big cooler on mine, I am not worried about heat. Even loaded for minutes the board is at room temp. The heatsink is barely even warm. I still get frustrated drving my wives car with the 4.4.4 unit. God it is so much faster. I love the zipties though, looks as good as my 3m tape solution haha. After the paste gets good and hard, I may just remove the tape.
I tried to overclock. It will not keep the changes in the files. It is locked in the kernel.

Oooh, that sounds very nice! I was planning on dismounting the unit from the car for the coming weeks anyway, to see if I can get the v6.5 Malaysk firmware to play and do some other tweaks. So this one is a nice feature to test.
Anybody got an idea of how the cpu is cooled? In comparison to a tablet or minipc, I would say they have ample of room to do so, but the question is whether they actually did something.
i would be interested in seeing the results of someone else trying this out
Judging by past photos, there doesn't seem to be any active cooling whatsoever. Additionally, I don't believe passive cooling is even installed - it's just free air. In any case, my MTCD tends to get quite hot.
https://img.xda-cdn.com/XGgubcDPFwM...GdD8Un98jDL93VOVFZVGVWdwspoGnzs=w1547-h870-no
Might be a good idea to use a passive cooling ?
I downloaded Setcpu, but its not as easy as choosing a new setting. The stock frequency tables are all that are there. It allows you to load new frequencies from a .txt file. I haven't had a chance to do this yet.
i used setcpu for root and it works fine. The kernel is locked to 1.6 but..................
even under full load continually the cpu never went above 1.2
I went out bought a heatsink and put it on the cpu. Cranked it to performance and 1.6 on boot with setcpu
It is a completely different machine now. It works as well as my mtcb 3188. Today I got gps workin and a workin radio good day.
What passive heatsink did you buy?

just an aluminum fined one from a local shop. covers the memory and the cpu.
It still can peg the cpu with i loveradio and google driving maps open at the same time, but it no longer freezes and is usable. Takes maybe 5 seconds to open google maps if only thing running. It is usable now until it burns up.
They definitely had a heat/speed problem. If someone could unlock the kernel it would be better. It is usable now and no longer a piece of junk.
just got an email from joying, it does have a gps card slot, it is just inside the box. on the front left.

I did notice if I chose performance it would run at 1.6 also, on any other setting it never made it above 1.2 no matter how bad the load was. I would rather having it boot at 1.6 also. maybe 1.8 now that i know initd is working on maylay 6.5
maybe something like
echo "performance" > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor
it has a file that lists them all there also
Mine would go to 1.6 on interactive. I switched it to performance and it locked on 1.6, but I'm not sure how hot its getting. there doesn't seem to be a sensor. Will these shutdown or reboot if they get too hot? I was also able to make these changes using Kernel auditor which is free. I switched it back to stock. I dont know enough about these and how they protect themselves from heat. Is there a kernel source available anywhere?
what kind of unit you have? mine refused to go above 1.2, but it is all about the limits and timing maps on how high it lets it go, not just the max frequency.
it was slow as could be.
I have a joying unit.

S9+ Exynos benchmarks and battery life

Since I got mine early I can post some

You can also check your chip bin by going through the download mode. Mine is all 10 out of 15 I guess
Thanks for the information. What names you say snapdragon will be faster this year?
That battery life indication isn't realistic at all after all those benchmarks. Should be much better when using normally.
This year thought this phone is boring me. Mine comes tomorrow but i feel dead about it. Will probably go back unless battery surprises me in a good way

That scared me for a moment! Damn. But then I saw always on display in on. That's a battery hog I never use, on my mate 10 at 90% battery left I'm on about 1hr 20 minutes screen on time lol
There could be hope for the s9 plus yet. Thanks for updating

yep i usually dont use AOD but since i was busy benchmarking and some other stuff didnt tune the phone to my likings yet and AOD will definetly be off
looks like the NDA is up, reviews are flooding in for US/SD845 units
So first full charge today looks alright as it's the same usage I had on my s8 in the beginning minus AOD.

Ok so here's my first full charging cycle results
Now here's another shot with 4G only and exact same set up and apps as before. Aod on all the time. I turned airplane mode on @2am then off @8am

Always preferred the Exynos and this guy has the qualifications to know what he's talking about. If anything it looks like they may under-clock the Exynos to the Snapdragon can keep up
They did under lock it but I think it's because of the battery/power consumption. When the device was tested on geekbench before the launch, lowest frequency was clocked at 1.9 and highest at 2.9 they lowered them by 200mhz each but it reached 9250 on those values. I think we will unlock them when custom kernels show up
Having various mixed results..
Still better then the SD version, not sure why the OP said it will be the opposite this year.

Again look at other benchmarks ie gfxbench, webxprt speedometer etc
Well, theres a known scheduler bug, which maybe/not will be fixed with the upcoming March update. This should fix these problems.
@AndreiLux is looking at it maybe he will find something or maybe he won't we'll see. I didn't get the march update yet.

I'm not sure if maybe I'm misunderstanding something or not --- but aI thought all the talk was about what a giant step forward the Exynos device new processor was supposed to be -- thus making the Exynos far out perform the Snap this year ??
It is twice as fast as in single core performance and 10-20% faster than the sd845 in CPU but GPU is underwhelming maybe it will be fixed by a software

I have the March Security Patch Update.
Seems it's still not fixed
Guess it's a governor bug or the Exynos is borked.
