Overclock MTCD/MTCB RK3188 Quad Core CPU from 1.6 to 1.8? - MTCD Android Head Units Q&A

On rockchip's website they listed a play store app called SetCPU that could be used for overclocking the CPU. Has anyone tested this with good results? Searching on google, it seems that other people have been able to overclock the RK3188 CPU from stock 1.6ghz to 1.8ghz+ successfully. However, the overclocked RK3188 chip was in a miniPC rather than an Android Head Unit.

Seems overclocking is locked by the kernel- we're limited to adjusting the governor through Kernel Adiutor, No-frills CPU Control, and SetCPU.

I tried to overclock. It will not keep the changes in the files. It is locked in the kernel.

Oooh, that sounds very nice! I was planning on dismounting the unit from the car for the coming weeks anyway, to see if I can get the v6.5 Malaysk firmware to play and do some other tweaks. So this one is a nice feature to test.
Anybody got an idea of how the cpu is cooled? In comparison to a tablet or minipc, I would say they have ample of room to do so, but the question is whether they actually did something.

Judging by past photos, there doesn't seem to be any active cooling whatsoever. Additionally, I don't believe passive cooling is even installed - it's just free air. In any case, my MTCD tends to get quite hot.

Might be a good idea to use a passive cooling ?

I downloaded Setcpu, but its not as easy as choosing a new setting. The stock frequency tables are all that are there. It allows you to load new frequencies from a .txt file. I haven't had a chance to do this yet.

i used setcpu for root and it works fine. The kernel is locked to 1.6 but..................
even under full load continually the cpu never went above 1.2
I went out bought a heatsink and put it on the cpu. Cranked it to performance and 1.6 on boot with setcpu
It is a completely different machine now. It works as well as my mtcb 3188. Today I got gps workin and a workin radio good day.

What passive heatsink did you buy?

just an aluminum fined one from a local shop. covers the memory and the cpu.
It still can peg the cpu with i loveradio and google driving maps open at the same time, but it no longer freezes and is usable. Takes maybe 5 seconds to open google maps if only thing running. It is usable now until it burns up.
They definitely had a heat/speed problem. If someone could unlock the kernel it would be better. It is usable now and no longer a piece of junk.
just got an email from joying, it does have a gps card slot, it is just inside the box. on the front left.

Mine is not locked at 1.2. I can flip the governor to performance and it runs at 1.6 all day long.

did you use a script or a cpu tool to switch it? if you used a script mind sharing it so i do not have to go looking for file location?
I did notice if I chose performance it would run at 1.6 also, on any other setting it never made it above 1.2 no matter how bad the load was. I would rather having it boot at 1.6 also. maybe 1.8 now that i know initd is working on maylay 6.5
maybe something like

it has a file that lists them all there also

Mine would go to 1.6 on interactive. I switched it to performance and it locked on 1.6, but I'm not sure how hot its getting. there doesn't seem to be a sensor. Will these shutdown or reboot if they get too hot? I was also able to make these changes using Kernel auditor which is free. I switched it back to stock. I dont know enough about these and how they protect themselves from heat. Is there a kernel source available anywhere?

what kind of unit you have? mine refused to go above 1.2, but it is all about the limits and timing maps on how high it lets it go, not just the max frequency.
it was slow as could be.

*Added a setting for charging that is 100/1400 conservative with a priority above everything except the heat one. so like 91 heat and 89 charging.
Seems stable, zippy and doesn't kill the battery too fast. All good.

UPDATE: the settings above worked a treat for me on froyo but after updating to gingerbread I found it was back to the old drawing board time. For whatever reason, and being fair to Samsung and gingerbread by saying that the tab is now older and been used and abused its whole life, I wasn't able to apply the same level of undervolting without lockups and rebooted.
Why? Well could be a few reasons, the one mentioned above I really think plays a part in it. I also think though that gb is just different. Obvious I know but I mean its different at a base operating level. It needs new bootloaders and as alot of the experienced developers currently doing the tab gb stuff I think are finding its got a few curveballs its very happy to throw into the mix. The other point is that the control app has been updated dramatically with new ui and a more polished look to the outside which I think also follows into the coding. Xan, the developer must be a very talented individual and is pioneering the CPU control at kernel level IMO and really deserves our support. You can get the fee apk but I think its worth a donation just for the free version.
I notice the newer kernels are also having preset UV settings which is awesome. Gives you a base to build on and as each tab is different, yours may not go as low in volts as little Johnny's tab but it may go further than big Bob's one, it provides a good starting point. Or whatever..

Ps. Watch how big a difference it makes to battery drain with screen off and below 30. I keep thinking it will die before I get a charger and like 4 hours later its only gone down by about 10 percent.

there is a problem regarding those settings. did you try to restart the Tab after? mine doesn't start at all ! I should try several times to keep pressing the power button and then, after few minutes it starts again. after uninstalling the Set CPU and Voltage Control, everything comes to normal.....any advice?
SetCPU seems to be very crashy on the SGT. You might want to try not decreasing the voltages quite as much, some CPUs can't cope with it. I've got mine set even lower and I'm fine.
The "performance" governor locks the speed at the "max" value, the "powersave" one locks it at the "min" value. It's a pity that the "Ondemand" and "Interactive" governors seem to be so unstable as either would be better for performance than "Conservative".
I've also got another profile for "Charging" which ramps everything up a bit.
One thing I have noticed after spending some time in here is that all SGT's are not created equal!! I have no issues with the settings above, none at all. It boots fine, runs super fast with 2200 being the average score in quad. And I am on my second day without charging... its been lighter usage but still....
I guess I got lucky but all I can say is trial and error, or search for a simillar problem with another user and ask what settings if any worked for them. My thinking is that there would be batches that will run one way and others that won't.

Its the CPU. They all have different tolerances on the minimum they can run at. Samsung just uses a voltage that guarantees all of them will work at. I've decreased everything 800mhz and up to -200mv. So far so good.

Try install jus UV & set the limit to 1400ghz. Run it for a day or two.
I have problem with SetCPU, give up on it. So now i only have UV installed.

Sorry for stupid question, Am I need to flash kernel for 1400ghz? Or just use SetCPU with overcome 1.0 karnel?
Since there are some karnel said they are for 1.4ghz so I am confusing on it, tks!

If the kernel does not support >1ghz, then setcpu cannot set the speed to anything higher.
The overcome kernel supports an overlock of 1.2 and 1.4Ghz.
Overcome Kernel 1.0 is an overclock kernel. Just install setcpu to oc

with the settings above do you have it set up as "Save as boot settings"? i had set mine at bfq and limit clock to 1200mhz and not changing anything else saving it as boot but when i went to restart the tab it got stuck on the Galaxy Tab screen, i had to re-store my backup in order for the tab to re-start.
also how did you get the 600mhz:?-100=?mv?
i am using richardtrip's [Kernel] [EURO] [1.4ghz OC/UV] MCR EXT4 compatible/Voodoo Sound V15 22/02 hope that helps with what i am asking.
I gave up on Set Cpu and switched to Cpu Tuner, a choise I don't regret at all.

Recently changed to overcome kernel 2.0 and have changed to bfq. All stiull running smoothly.
And yeah i have mine all set to set at boot.

Sorry buddy its been ages I should probably update this. I find that overcome has gottan alot better I still use the same undervolting but no profiles on set CPU. Just set to 100 min and1400 Max ondemand. I can use bfq and have no issues but one thing I know for sure, and I think it was even stated in this thread, no 2 of these are the same... same deal with more strain on the CPU than others so if my settings didn't work for you I'm sorry for that but all I can suggest is what I did to find the right setting... experiment, trial and error...

I found out what I did wrong...on Screen Off profile I didn't set "Performance" scaling, instead I did "Conservative"...the Tab was only crashing when screen was off!
Now that I switched it to performance it works just fine...

What's has better battery life, now that you have experience with both, with the profiles mentioned above or "On Demand" with no profiles?
That's a tough one as I use my tab a whole heap more and for many more things. I have 3 times as Widgets and so on... put it this way I used to get 2 days with low to moderate use on the setting in this thread, now with extremely heavy usage, I'm talking 8 hours or more almost straight with web browsing, ebooks, video, music, news ect...
I like my new set up cause its alot easier to configure and I find the most important aspect to battery life is the undervolting... overcrowded seems to handle the just fine. The only other thing I really swear by is an app like juice defender or battery boost.. set them up and its turning things off when not used which can be massive...

[Q] voltage control tutorial?

Is there a tutorial (written or video) that shows how to use this? I've never overclocked or changed the voltage before and i dont wna just go in there n start messing with stuff when i have no clue what im doing. Ive looked around for maybe a begginers tut or like voltage control for dummies, but havent really found anything. Anyone know of one? Thanks.
It's really not very hard. The regular Voltage Control will not allow you to overvolt, so you will not run the risk of frying your processor. Don't go over 1400 mhz though. Bad magic after that.
Undervolting will not harm your phone, the most it will do is make it lock up. Just experiment with different voltages. Back in the day I used to run -75 mV across the board without many issues, but I don't really have a use for it anymore since I carry a spare battery. Don't be frustrated if your phone doesn't like even -25 mV though, because every processor is slightly different in their abilities to handle voltage and frequency changes out of spec.
Please note that PBJT kernel is already undervolted a good amount.

Can you please tell me what the actual voltage is? I found that with IMO 4.0 kernel, and with Tegrak Overclock Ultimate, I can clock the at 1.252 Ghz @ 1285mV and 1.3 Ghz @ 1330mV stably. However, I don't know what the actual stock voltage is or the PBJT voltage or IMO 4.0 voltage, etc.
I figure you could check the voltage at least with the free version of Tegrak.

I am also new to the voltage and clock adjustments. I am finding that my phone is SUPER slow now. I used another forum member's numbers that were supposed to offer a good balance of performance and battery life. I know that every phone is a little different, but I don't want to start messing around and screw stuff up

Was your phone slow when you first flashed the new kernel? imnuts' kernels tend to slow down over time on my phone and I've had better luck with stock. Some people never seem to have issues.
Personally, I run the stock kernel which can't be overclocked. I do have the minimum clock speed set to 400 and the governor (which I think makes the biggest difference) set to performance. i/o scheduler is noop, but I've heard that it doesn't make a huge difference either way.
The only issues I have with speed are RAM related. I typically reboot my phone first thing in the morning just to get it going.
And battery life has maybe suffered some, but its hard for me to tell. I get horrible reception downtown, so when I need my phone I toggle data off to keep it from dying. When I'm home, I keep it on since I'm close to a charger. There's too many variables in my day to know (or even remember at this point) whether its had a significant impact.

FYI, if you have the governor set to performance, then the minimum doesn't matter. That governor runs the CPU at max constantly. Great for performance, but hideous for battery life. The only time it will ever ramp down is when it goes into deep sleep, otherwise, it's running at 1GHz.

My phone was great when I flashed, but within about 12 hours, things were horrible. I have since flashed back to the stock fp1 kernel, and life is good. Unfortunately, I am not a person who 'leave well enough alone'. I'd like to enter the world of over/ under clocking and see if I can gain some additional performance.

I thought that was how it worked, but I will open voltage control from time to time and it will read that its currently at 400 or 800 MHz. Does the program not display properly?
edit: Playing around with it some more, if I change it to something else and then switch it to performance it goes right to 1000. Weird that it displays incorrectly when the program is opened.

Battery temperature

Hello all! I am running a simple battery app on my GT 2 7.0 that provides battery temperature. The highest I have seen thus far has been roughly 35 degrees Celsius. And an area of the tablet gets warm (not hurtful hot, merely warm). Is this a normal temperature for the battery? I am not familiar with the appropriate temperatures so figured I'd seek guidance from people with more experience, haha. I am not rooted or running any type of custom rom, just stock ICS that came on the tablet.
I am looking to get a case for when I am holding the tab as I find my hands do get warm while holding the tab, maybe that is causing the problem. When I had the SG Player 4.0, I installed a battery temp app, I noticed slightly warmer temps without a case.. I bought a case within that week and temps never went above 27 degrees Celsius, even when I was pushing the little guy a lot.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Elixir has a widget with small footprint so you can monitor it.
Mine never runs hot and I oc mine to 1.4ghz. Doesn't feel hot anyway. I use a case on my tablet.

It appears yours, during the time of the SS was running at roughly 40C.. And it runs fine? I suppose I get paranoid about such things, but mine never goes over 35C and doesn't stay that way for long periods of time.. Right now, it is running at 31C and I am locking/unlocking the screen quite a bit as I am using Facebook messenger..

35c degrees is fairly normal, but never overclock your CPU if you don't want to have your gtab2 dead for the next 2 years

What could I do to keep temperatures down if I may ask? I don't do heavy gaming on the tab when I do run games. I am mainly using the internet in some form - browser, YouTube, etc. Thanks for your input.

I've run several android devices overclocked for years. My old evo has been oc for two+ years. Kid I sold it to runs ics on it overclocked.
So do some research on the subject.
Well, I am not wanting to or trying to OC my tab as I am too much of a "noob" for that, lol. Just curious about the temperature the battery is running at and all.
I find that idle, the temp can be around 30 degrees Celsius.. this is somewhat surprising to me, but it's my first tablet as well, so I suppose I worry I will cause some sort of damage or that it simply has a defect of some type.

Android Multi threaded / core usage and efficiency

I have always wonder, how well dose android leverage multi core SOCS? I know from being a PC hardware geek that most developers are terrible and using all the power in multi core CPU's. I understand that in benches all the cores are used, but how often are task spread out over the cores in real life usage. My theory is that they are barely used yet I have no evidence to promote this.
Depends on the governor settings but they definitely use all cores a lot by default.

Do you think this would scale well onto the 8 core SOCS? I was just wondering if they really offered good real life performance rather than just good benchmarks

Weird. I was just wondering this myself, mainly because I just dont know what kind of specs it would take to have me use something other than my N5 and I am a phone-whore.
There aren't many tasks that need more than 2 cores active at a time. Gaming is one of the few times a 3rd core will kick in from what I've seen.
Traditionally, encoding benefits a lot from multiple cores but that isn't a task people usually attempt on their mobile.

You said that it will trigger the third core while gaming. I have a Nexus 5 and it lags in a specific have game. Idon't think my Nexus is trigering all the cores as it happens on my PC with the same application. On pc All cores goes to 90% as i don't have a graphics card. On Nexus i can't get the game to run on 100% even when i drop down all the quality over performance. I know that the device can handle this game. It's just a bootle neckle a believe. It's running stock rom stock kernle On demand governor. It should trigger all the cores.....i'm very sad with that too as i have bought the device manly for use like this.

Which game are you talking about? Once the phone starts heating up within about 20-30minutes it will begin to thermal throttle the CPU cores and clock speeds.

I'm talking about Digimon Adventure (1.5GB rom) on PPSSPP it's not the only game that i'm having this problem. And i'm pretty sure that nexus is not "taking it serious". From the beggning of the game you can see it already laggin. When i zoom out and the back ground bacames large it goes around to 50% when have about 6 NPCs on the screen it hapens too. When battling its pretty unstable. Some times ti can take up to 200% and some time to 90 again on the same screen in 3 seconds just changing the perpective of the camera.

That's an issue with the ROM and emulation. It's very common for emulated games to have frame rate issues and you probably need to play around with the render settings. Nothing to do with our phone specifically, check other forums for more advice on the subject.

See the images above. My cpu goes only to maximium of 50% on the emulator. I have been playng other things and i feel that my device is getting some kind of botttle neck.

Did you down clock your CPU? If not, it's probably an issue with the emulated PSP ROM. You can play around with the emulator's render settings to try and get smoother game play but I am no expert on the subject.

Never.....my Phone is all Stock. And CPU -Z says it is in On the demand governor. The emulator does support a incrediblle variety of multi threaded process like inputs and process. These features are optional and when i turn the process multithread on, it slow down a litle more. i believe that it occurs because of the limitation of the 2 cores and the Android not allowing it to use the others. The emulator have a version for PC. The same emulator does multithread on my I3 Quad core 3.1GHz.

Many years looking the same... but now antutu is completely redesigned and looks really nice.
You can now compare chipsets performance also ...
I know that lot's of people don't like it but many others do... I do!

44k on my overly crowded sMIUI. Looking at LG G4 score, we should be able to reach that point so 69k is the expected score.

Not sMIUI fault I believe, when it was still virgin I can manage 5Xk too on antutu 5. With aqua mail (3 accounts), facebook, hangouts, line, path, twitter, plurk, slack, whatsapp and many other background apps, it's hard to reach that score back.
Stable chinese MIUI rom 7.0.7.0, rooted and greenified. Managed 68500.

On sMiUI 12.10 my phone scored 65k. Forgot to take screenshot.

Getting 47858 on CM12 on charger without restarting :/
Resetting and running in Airplane mode gave me 42k on charger
Running again without a charger gave me 58119...
Restarted again, ran on battery got 60070...hmmm
On charger phone got higher temps, and there is throttling.

Our device will get slower when it's hot due to thermal throttling, the thermal engine controls both CPU and GPU. When charging, especially when it's over 60%, the temperature will reach a high value that may exceed the threshold imposed by the thermal engine. Thus, either the core speed will be clocked down (CPU0-3 max 600, CPU4-5 max 864) or they will be totally off. Same with GPU (max 300 when hot, 600 when normal). I think Xiaomi didn't notice that many of its customers live in the equator lines where the temperature is generally warm to hot (25-35) so the threshold values will be reached much sooner than those who use the phone in norther or souther area.
It's true... But in this version of antutu the scores dont get uch a diferente after 2 or 3 tests... In previous version I used to get 57k, then 54k and then 50k... In this version I get 70k, 69k and then 69k again... Not much of a diference in results after heating... Why would this happen? I never get less than 69k

Maybe you need to put more background apps to your phone as I do
Having a screenshot of Android Assistant (both Monitoring and Processes tabs) might help the analysis.
Around 70k is a very bad score I must say, for our hardware.
On last Antutu I got 59k score and for example my friends Iphone 6s had 57k.
Now I'm getting 69k, and he is getting 120k scores.....

TBH, that's not bad since you can buy FOUR Mi4C for an iPhone 6s. Twister Core in Apple A9 is the best single core processor to date (which Snapdragon 820 Kyro cores might be able to beat when it comes out seeing latest benchmark info). Our Snapdragon 808 is even nowhere near 810, how could you expect it would beat Apple A9? Here's the official AnTuTu list for each SoC:
IPhone 6s with 57k... In your dreams. Mrkubix go to sleep...
Sd820 still does not beat iPhone single core performance... Dont know how they did that twister... But they did it very well... Typhoon was already wonderful...
