Hi all,
I'm pretty neurotic about assigning all of my known devices specific IP addresses based off of their MAC Address on my home network, but I've noticed that the MAC Address of my G5 seems to change after every reboot. I'm on 20A, unlocked and rooted. Is anyone else seeing this and is there anyway to have my phone keep the same MAC after a reboot?
Thanks,
Dave
Nobody else is seeing this issue then?

My g5 has always done this (or at least ever since I rooted my phone using the rooted tot method). Can't remember if it did it before but I know it has ever since. Some other people reported the same issue in the cm 14.1 thread also on main g5 thread. No known fix though. Funny thing is if I take out sim card wifi Mac address stays same every boot, but that doesn't help much.
may be a reason * that would be a very odd bug
This would be a very odd bug, someone may have intended on this. There may be a good reason. im not sure if you know it or not but t-mobile is on a war path of those that root there phones they reasoning is that those who unlock circumvent all there in place systems to throttle your internet speeds. i read an article where the ceo said he was going after the 3000 or so people who have rooted and are "stealing data, or jamming up the network due to continuous breach of the unlimited data plan" So by changing you mac every time you may actually be circumventing detection a little its not perfect but it may help you not be blocked due to your mack address. these are my thoughts.

Ok, so I"m not crazy!!! I can "Fix" it by setting my home WIFI setting to obtain a fixed address on the phone settings, as long as the IP is the same as what I intended for the Router to assign by MAC, it seems to work just fine, but it was strange so I wanted to make sure it wasn't something wrong with my hardware or the flash/root that I applied. Thanks for the confirmation.

Could be, but I would like to think if it were by design they would have created a settings option somewhere to prevent it. I don't use much data, and the MAC changing is a bit annoying, so I would much rather have it stay the same, but can understand what you are saying and why it might be a good feature for some. Thanks for the reply!!!!

I think it has to do with the MAC address not being read or showing invalid on boot and then Android gives it a random MAC address. On older Roms it used to be as simple as running some commands in a terminal to recreate your nvs_map.bin file which contained MAC address. I don't believe this works anymore though, not sure. And it has nothing to do with something built in to circumvent data limits or anything else like that. Many people on T-Mobile are rooted and using custom Roms without this issue. This has been an issue for years on numerous devices, so not related to just the g5 or T-Mobile. Do a Google search for changing Mac address on Android reboot you'll find lots of stuff. Also, even if you go back to stock it will still happen.

I found this fix for the Nexus 5 on Nougat, but I can't find any of the files mentioned in the thread. I've also seen some older posts mentioning the NVRAM folder, but I can't find that either. Maybe I'm not searching for the right context, but I feel like if I could find where the WLAN0 MAC is supposed to be stored on Nougat, I might be able to fix it...

On my phone it appears to be located in:
"/system/etc/wifi"
And the Mac address is located in the file:
"bcmdhd.cal"
Open it in a text editor and you should see your MAC address towards the top of the file. Also compare it to your currently reported MAC address and it'll probably be different, although the first 6 octlets should be the same.
But anyways that appears to be the config file so if you can figure out what needs to be changed to fix it let us know.
*** Edit: ***
So did some tinkering. The file that's referenced in that link you gave before doesn't seem to exist on our phones not does creating it and putting it in different directories do anything. However, changing the Mac address on the file I referenced does do something. If you take that line out then you get the Mac address 20:00:00:00:00:00 which makes wifi, but means it's probably something in that config file that needs to be changed. Not sure what tried changing all kinds of stuff, I either keep the changing MAC address or get the 20:00:00.... address. So not sure.

And also to anyone having this issue, I was able to fix it. I wrote a guide located at:

ok with l26 v9 and Ryncppr Version V6 wont pick up my homes wifi (ssid is just not there on the wifi screen of my tytn2's settings so i cant connect to it as its not there to click on it). After flashing a few others namely romeos latest and l26 v8 including flashing the correct hard spl(as recommended in rom thread) for all of them my phone finds my wifi again any ideas people? I have tried other wifi managers etc but it still wont be found.
i have also mentioned this in l26's v9 thread and people didn't seem to know i have not said anything to ryncppr as i flashed out of it instantly as i use my wifi all the time at home. this is a very frustrating problem.
And yes i have reset my router and and all that sort of stuff.
I Have all ready tried;
Different radio's
Reflash
Hard reset (after every flash i have ever done)
2 Downloads of l26 v9 from 4shared and rapidshare
2 routers tried
Third party wifi apps
hidden ssid
non hidden ssid
wep disabled
wep enabled
a few channels
sitting next to the router
resetting my router
firmwear update (no further updates)
all router settings were tried on both routers
UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok after testing some of the idea given by readers of the thread i have determind this is definatly a rom issue with L26 v9's rom i will test Ryncppr later today or tomorrow. L26 v9 rom will not pick up wifi on channels 12,13,6 and 5 maybe more but after i set my router to 5 my laptop lost the wireless and i had to hook up with a cable to fix. but from other peoples wifi in my street i should be ok on channel 3 aswell. i shall go and post these findings in the l26 thread so people know. i sadly am not a chef etc and have no idea about how to fix this i shall play and see if i can find anything.
this test has been done at hard spl 3.59 (rom recomended) radio 1.58.25.17 and 1.65.24.36 hard reset after flash.
Please inform if you have/find similar results/problem
Did you try different radios?

Man, this post is giving me a headache just 1) trying to understand what the problem is, and 2) trying to understand what you've tried already, and 3) trying to understand why you didn't post this in a specific ROM's thread.
Potential answer #1: ESL. But nope, I look at your country and it's (!) England.
Potential answer #2: You're in an altered state of mind.

Well, look at it this way, he (1) used the correct SPL, (2) tryed [sic] other Wifi managers, (3) reset his router, and (4) all that sort of stuff.
Based on this (especially # 4, because that's a "catch-all") , we can absolutely remove anything that might be specific to his situation or setup (including his phone and/or router). With such conclusive and definitive statements, it can then absolutely only be a problem with every single one of the ROM's he tried.
I know, I know - you might dispute the fact that every single solitary ROM out there the same WiFi bug in it (which hasn't hit me, and probably not you)), but that seems to be the only possibility given (1) to (4). Since every cooked ROM out there must immediately be recooked, the main topic heading is actually well chosen!

... As opposed to the language that you're writing in (which isn't English, I'm guessing, even though my native language is "American").
Seriously, man. We're just trying to help you, but if we can't understand you with the typos, slang, and lapses in data-points, it becomes too hard, and then it becomes much easier for us to slag you because of the typos in your post.
And believe me, I try not to do that because it's such a cheap shot, but this post raises lack of communication to a new level.
Back to the problem, the new data-points are helpful. If the router seems to be the problem, what kind of router are you using?

How can other people read and understand the post but yourself. The router is fine i have only had the problem with 2 roms the ones listed befor. Every other rom has been fine. The radios have been fine i have 6 laptops running off the router and 2 pc's all fine the only problem is with my phone. My old wizard picks it up fine aswell. As said befor the recomend hard spl's were used, the radio has been changed and the problem is still there. And befor anybody ask's yes i did hard reset after all flash's. This is a rom problem im not stupid i have checked everything on the router twice. i have changed settings on the router and my phone still cannot find it. Leading it to be a rom issue as it was fine with l26 v8 v7 and v6 all of duttys i can go on. and like i have sed befor i have changed the name of the router to names of routers around me and it still cant find it. i honestly do not know how to make this more clear.
This is driving me mad as l26 v9 is my fav rom so far and i have found it very stable and fast but i cannot use it with my wifi.
Please fill me in on the "lapses in data-points" ican list all the hard spl's rom (Already said) and radios if you so need. but i do not belive these to be required.
I don't cook roms or anything like that so I'm not an expert, but since you could find your neighbors router but not yours why don't you post your brand and type of router and see if anyone can find a link.

This is an internet forum. People can't spell and they certainly don't know what "[sic]" means.
I would suggest comparing the values in the following registry key, between the working and non-working ROM's:
[Mobile Device\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\TNETW12511\Parms]
There may be a setting in there that is causing the conflict (or the driver revision used, check version/datestamp/filesize of TNETW1251.dll between working/nonworking)
For example, on my HP IPAQ hx4705, if I set HTCPowerMode to 2, on my old wifi router I would get random disconnects etc. - setting to 0 (which uses more power) fixed those problems right up. I no longer have these issues after upgrading my router.

VJ – check your power save mode on the ROMs that work. Read somewhere that it needs to be on best performance to work on some ROMs. Hope this helps.
I am surprised you are blaming the ROMs you flashed for your problem as all the threads for those ROMs do not have anyone flagging wireless as a problem with a flood of others agreeing with them. I myself flash almost all new ROMs posted on the Kaiser ROM Development forum and with an exception of one ROM (which is now fixed) all work with my Wireless at home and at work. Try a different radio as suggested before (take note on people discussing the radio versions in those specific ROM threads) and defiantly try somewhere with a wireless hotspot.
One BIG question: How did you reset your wireless router? I ask because it sounds like it is not releasing new IP addresses. You have flashed new ROMs which will clear the original IP thus requesting a new one from your router.
i have also been having problems with my wifi on the secure network at my house. my hermes connects just fine i have flashed it at least 50 times. but my tilt can only connect to secure wifi on the roms that use the radio 1.64.xxx and lower of course there are not many secure routers for me to test on.

Ok, I have a Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE (downgraded to 3G, no 4G in my area) running Android 4.1.2 that I use my Hotspot internet off of. I have connected it to just about everything, computers, tablets, and other phone and it has always worked perfectly until now. I got a Visual Land Prestige Pro 7D tablet running Android 4.1.1 for Christmas and for some reason my phone's hotspot won't connect to it. It says it is connected but when I go to use the browser or any app that uses the internet it never loads or doesn't work. Sometimes the signal even drops out and reconnects but never actually works. I did some research and it sounds like it might be an IP address conflict but I am not sure how to fix it. Some sites suggest downloading another tether/hotspot app so I tried a few. Some revert back to the original hotspot setting on my phone, which of course did me no good, and some just plain did not work, they did exactly like my original hotspot, connect but won't work. I have pretty much figured out that it has something to do with my phone's hotspot since my tablet works perfectly fine on other people hotspot or wifi internet. Can someone please help me figure out what is going on?! Thanks in advance!
Are you on the stock ROM? Seems to be from your post.
You've tried using the built-in tethering feature, as well as some 3rd party software. Most of the 3rd party programs will create an 'ad-hoc' network which typically only other computers can connect to. There's some threads around here that discuss how to remedy this on stock. Search around.

Yes I'm still on the stock ROM the phone came with. I have tried the built-in and 3rd party apps and neither is working. I'm really not sure to look for. I have tried a few different things including changing the IP address in my phone hotspot settings and nothing works.

A phone w/o root is less than half phone.
BTW you can try foxfy or pdanet, the latter works surely, but at the price of a client installation on the PC side, and is USB/BT only.
I haven't tested the former

I have rooted my phones before but I like this phone the way it is for right now and I just don't want to go through that long process of rooting it.
I have tried Foxfi, it connects but like the others, the browser and app never load, but I can connect to any other wifi or hotspot and they load fine. From what I have heard Foxfi and PDAnet are the same, they even have a combined app. I have done some more research and it looks like maybe my phone or tablet, which ever one, is running adhoc (?) and either one or the other can't use that. Does that sound about right?
PDAnet and foxfi, are two apps sold by the same company, but are all but the same thing.
PDAnet is a 10+ years old program, is older than android, and is an absolutely proven SW, working on multiple platforms either on server and client side.
FoXfi is a relatively new program that manages to work on a great number of devices, but that is not guaranteed to work on any device.
If foxfi doesn't work on PQ, I'm afraid there is nothing you can do w/o rooting the phone.

Install TWRP, it will automatically offer to root the device after booting to recovery and then in recovery restarting to system.
Otherwise follow this guide to install CWM / SuperSU.

Sorry for the late reply. (time zone is our enemy
BTW given arrrghhh already replied, I can only add to avoid confusion to follow the linked thread about CWM, but replacing the CWM part with TWRP.
The latter is more newbie friendly and, will root automatically the phone, and will also block the function that restore the original recovery on the first boot.

Where are you stuck? Did you read the guide I linked? Have you checked the official TWRP page?

Basically you need to install the drivers and get ADB working, before doing anything else
Once you have done that step you can unlock your phone, using the instructions provided on the CWM thread, and in the related motorola website iself.
Then is flashing the TWRP is pretty easy, you just need to start your phone in fastboot mode, connect your phone the the pc, then issue the command
fastboot flash recovery twrp-something.img
(replace the last part with the real name of the file downloaded from the TWRP thread.
then reboot in recovery once (is mandatory to not reboot in system the first time) and when you will exit the recovery environment, it will ask if you want to root your phone.
That's all
This is a quick walk-trough, I hope you can understand that I can't detail every single step more, if and when you have doubts, just google a bit and ask for the definite problem you may have, here.
I recently got an LG Lucid 2 (VS870) which is running android 4.1.2 software VS7011A. I have also tried it on VS87010B. When i go into the wifi settings, I can see and add networks, which then say "saved, secured." it does not try to obtain an ip address or anything, it just says it is saved. It worked fine for about a day, but then stopped connecting.
I have rooted it with framaroot 1.9.1 (apk attached), which installed with no problem. I have used CWM touch recover, which does not need flashing, by playfulgod (apk attached)
It has this problem for all wifi networks i have tried, and resetting the router did not help. Other than initially rooting it, i have not changed anything along those lines. I have looked all over the internet with no successful solution, and any help would be appreciated.

I never got this phone to work. I still have it and mess with it sometimes, but no matter what firmware or rom I put on it, I have no luck.

i did this exact same thing
seems the defualt mac address is overwritten when the kernal is flashed with the unlocked one, once done, nothing fixes it, ive tried, it seems the unlocked kernal messes with the phone somehow for some people. but i found a work around, you have to install an app called macChanger and spoof a random mac address you must do this once in awhile or at every reboot, ive found no way to set the mac address so it seems we are ****ed, best bet it to just keep it as a nice mp3 player or a movie phone
Seems to work

I revisited this issue, and I found what appears to be a solution. I tried your suggestion, and seeing it worked, decided to mess around and see what i could figure out. I edited the mac address on the last line of /data/misc/wifi/config
and after a couple reboots, the address i entered seems to stay as the device's mac address and wifi continues to work.
I attached my edited version of the file
works Mac address issue fixed, needed to reboot at least three times
I am starting this thread to be a place for Terrain owners to come for the latest info on how to root and flash their phones. The Terrain is one of the best "rugged" phones on the market, but it has been abandoned by it's manufacturer, leaving owners to find their own solutions to problems and upgrades. This is actually a good thing price wise as you can now buy a brand new Terrain for less then $85. The Terrain has about as of hardware specs as any other ruggedized smartphone on the market currently, but at one third or a 1/4 of the cost. This makes this phone a huge attraction to anyone who is looking for a rugged waterproof phone on a budget and is why this guide is essential for users.
The NEC Terrain still has plenty of life left and this is why we need to come together and find solutions for it. Please feel free to post you success stories in rooting and flashing your terrain to this thread for the benefit of all. Hopefully, will be able to form a complete guide from all the information that get's posted here.
Thanks.
Hi!
I myself just today recieved this phone, and it would be great at least to debloat it.
Previous threads on XDA, just for reference:

Thanks for the post and the links. It appreas that much of the information on these links are still a work in progress. Hopefully this work will continue and we can create a How To guide from this.
For those that may be interested. You can buy the NEC Terrain Unlock on Amazon for $79.99. Here is the link.

Well, I almost bricked it few days ago. :good:
I read a thread about a patch to unlock GSM in CDMA phones and saw there a code to enter some hidden menu. I entered that menu and messed a little with band settings (wanted to get LTE to work with my operator). Next thing I know Terrain stopped receiving any GSM signal and for next hour I tried to fix it. Factory reset got me 2G signal and that's all.
It turned out that the only way to fully fix it is to re-flash firmware or radio module and as we know that can't be done.
Well, this is not about unlocking or flashing, but it is a solution to another problem I and many other have been having with the predictive text bar blocking critical function keys from being accessed. The predictive txt bar is a function of the Adaptxt keyboard app and disabling it does remove that bar, but the keyboard also loses all special character function, upper case letters and numbers. After trying more then a dozen keyboard apps to replace adaptxt, I found one that works and brings back all keyboard functions without the stupid predictive text bar. It is called TouchPal.

Forgive me for this slight OT-posting, but it's not that easy to find people with this device - let alone an unlocked one. I'm located in Germany and the device runs just fine - except for the fact that Tethering does not work - neither USB nor WIFI. The PC can connect to the phone, however the connection in Windows 7 always is shown as being limited (no internet access), while internet on the phone works fine.
GMail - as well as some other functions of google also rarely sync and basically just do so on request, while they sync just fine when being connected to Wifi. And no, background data are not restricted in the settings.
Has anyone experienced something similar?

Is there any suggestions how to fix it?

Well actually I know that message as well. For me changing the APN helped. You could also try to restart the phone. I just remember I also had this problem sometimes. But like I said - even without that particular message I would not get tethering to work.
iDomino: Do you also experience the problem with syncing that I had?
That's funny, actually I haven't noticed syncing problems untill I read your posts. I myself have all the same problems that you mention.
Even more of that, Terrain has some silly feature that TURNS OFF WI-FI if it thinks that that hotspot has no internet connection. It is massively annoying and can drain all your data traffic. The only solution that I found is to install the app "Smart Wi-Fi Toggler", it constantly turns wi-fi on if terrain turns it off, but only in places where I turned wi-fi on myself (like home and work).
It's a pity the phone has so many flaws and due to its tight security and the locked down NEC mobile devision no one can do anything about it. I wonder if this just affects the users who use an unlocked phone outside the US or if people in the US have similar problems. I have tried contacting NEC about this - actually about providing us with some kind of unlock mechanism - but all I got was this:
"Dear Sir,
Thank you for inquiry.
We, however, regret to inform you that our phone is not available about your request.
If you have any issue, would you try to contact the company or shop where you have purchased this model, who might be of help to you.
Thanks and Best Regards,
Fujii /NEC"
By the way, I discovered a new bug: When Roaming the actually used Network-Provider is not shown and I also didn't find a way to choose one...
Do you also experience the problem with syncing that I had?

I had some sync problems and I don't know working methods to fix it.
First time I solved it this way:
turning off apps sync -> open Gmail app -> it will show notification offering to enable synchronization -> use it -> sync works.
But this solution worked just once. (
Other time sync turns on by itself after one day disabled.
P.S. My Nec reboots while connecting via USB to ubuntu laptop.

Can someone tell me how your Terrains battery hold up charge? Because mine discharges completely in about 10 hours (without using phone at all). I think it's wakelock problem.

Does it crashes once or infinite loop begins? I had infinite loop problem while connecting NEC Terrain to Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Debian or CentOS. Removing "ModemManager" package solved it.

My phone works about 25-30 hours (30 min. calls, 5-10 sms, 30 min. messaging, 2 hours e-mail, internet & other applications. No video/gaming/music at all).
Infinite loop. Removing "modemmanager" helps! Thank you!
Also got spontaneous rebooting after installing FTP Client made by Zifero. :silly: Removing app solved the problem.
Dreaming about root and working wi-fi tethering.

Another Terrain user here!
Hi guys!
i am Kharl
i am another Nec Terrain user here!
due my lifestyle, i needed a phone which could gives me reliability and power under ANY circunstance, that could be done by any rugged phone, BUT i needed querty keyboard, fm radio, gps, gyroscope, accelerometer, loud speakers, that could work worldwide and touchscreen... the only one with those features was the Terrain... and with the extra, that it is amazingly cool, i dont know opther but i find this phone really cute, very sober and elegant design.
well, i live outside USA so, for me, to work it couldnt be locked to ATT, so i was able to get one unlocked.
my phone has almost all the problems you mentioned, althught i am still happy with it and i am not going to change it because its problems does nto interfere a lot with me, BUT of course id like to get those problems sovled.
trying to solve the problem i bough three of thes phones and all the three had the same problems
the first one was by mistake, locked to att, but it had the same problems, random restart and locked hotspot, i sold it, i got a second one, works with any sim, everything fines, but with the same problem, random restart and no hotspot, i bought a third one to see if the problem was with my particular phone... and n luck the same problems.
it has some other minors problems, like no stereo audio recording despite it has two mics and IT STATES IT CAN record in stereo, but thats not a problem, i can deal with that, and sometimes the people at the other side (while in a call) says my voice sounds like from within a box (lack of trebble or too much bass) and when i press the check too much to the phone boddy there is also clarity sound problem.... but thats ok....
regarding the two main problems
random reboot and hotspot
many of us suspect what the cause is
for the random reboot many could think it is a installe app which is causing it... NO, because it does it at factory state, to solve that i dotn think root is needed, there is a certain factory process that is causin to reboot, the reboot is VERY random, could doit threee times in a day or could happen only three times in a week, what i have notice is that it happe lessoften in cold weather.
the hotspot problem IT IS cause because att locked that function, even when the phone is ulocked, that part remain locked because ATT.
what about you guys?
u can try hard reset for begging
Hi All,
I am trying to convert my old d2vzw into a wifi only device for my daughter. The sim card has been removed, but the issue I describe below existed before when it did have a sim card installed... This only happens with my d2vzw, so I figured I would inquire here. I have only tried this on a few different CM based roms (android 4.4.4 vanir, and cm13) ... the issue is as such:
When trying to connect with google (either searching from the address bar or even going directly to google.com) using opera mobile (it is the only browser left that provides dynamic text reflow) it kicks back with one of several different errors, outlined in the screenshots below. This happens on at least 4 different wifi networks I connect to, all of which work fine with other browsers on this phones, and opera on other phones. Currently installed is a brand new install of CM13, the 20161113 build of invisiblek's official nightlies. I did change the hostname and rebooted though... I don't know if that would have any effect, it did not on my Nexus5... I am hoping this is a common issue that someone has run into? It is odd to me that this only happens with this particular phone, and only with opera, regardless of whether data savings is activated or not. Upon refreshing the page several (sometimes quite a few) times, the page will load up. Often, the page only loads partially. Other times, the page will flash up like it is starting to build, then it will bounce back to one of the errors seen in the screenshots below.
I apologize if this is rambling, I am just trying to provide as much detail as possible. This only seems to happen with google itself, not any other website ...
...Any ideas?
Thank you for your time...
