Does the Xperia XZ support ethernet adapter with stock ROM? - Sony Xperia XZ Questions & Answers

I want to connect my Sony Xperia XZ to RJ45 ethernet, using some micro-usb to ethernet adapter. Android supports it starting from marshmallow, but no idea if Sony introduced the feature on the Xperia XZ. Even iOS supports it, on both iPhone and iPad.
Anyone knows if it's possible or got it working?

Forget this phone, LG V20 and Samsung Galaxy S8/S8+ support OTG USB to ethernet adapters. See more here:
[TIP] LG V20 H990ds supports OTG USB to Ethernet adapter

Not possible, Sony has disabled this feature, just like the advanced manual settings in the camera and many other core Android features.

This is why I do not recommend Sony anymore.

is this statement still valid for 2018?
I really like the Design of new Sony Smartphones, but want also the Ethernet capabilities, and it seems lost since Lollipop 5.0.2+ (tested on Z3+ Dual)

Maybe latest ones with USB-C do support it, just test. I don't care about Sony anymore.

yeah, i would have the ncessary adapter ready. I am bit wary of buying Sony because of the high Sar-Values and problems with Loudspeaker audio-quality when in hands-free-mode. Why don't you care about Sony anymore,? thanks

6.0.1 OTG USB ethernet issues

Hello,
before I begin explaining my issue, I would like to apologie for my bad english.
I sometimes like to use my phone like notebook: connect mouse and keyboard to it. Z3 have OTG capability, so it(s fine. But one thing is not: ethernet adapters after updating to 6.0.1 using this doesn't seems to work.
First of all: i've thought, that you either have OTG or not. Not just for some devices. That it works like regular USB. It seems not. I have USB 3.0 powered hub conected to OTG cable and to the hub I've connected keyboard and mouse and tried to cennect already 5 different USB 3.0 gigabit ethernet adapters. They didn't work. On Android 5.1.1 worked my (all in one) USB OTG ethernet hub (3 USB 2.0, ethernet connector, micro USB wit OTG), but it was not powered, so I decided to upgrade.
Why? Simple. Power. I do this because for few day in near future I will be without my notebook (dedicated GPU is broken, i will have new one). I've been like this already for 3 days. And if i've been using my phone with keyboard and mouse (only use, which is comfortable for long time), I've noticed that is not possible to run this on battery. So my idea was to take as much as i can from the phone: controls and internet connection, and power that externally. And in addition buy the docking station and use the dock charging port. I've did all of this. And it works like magic: phone is powered from charger. All the time you might ask, why the hell I just don't use built in WiFi. Energy. That is the reason. WiFi just eat too much: if I pull up brightness of display and actually DO something on that phone, even wit plugged in docking charger, it just drain power faster, than charger charging (measured). For some reason the dock charging give about 0,45 A, not full 1,5 or something like that. Keyboard and mouse eats about 0,3 A, with some ethernet adapter it would be about 0,5 A. SO…a lot of power.
Android is based on Linux, so I have question (and I pretty much know the answer): is there ANY way how to install drivers for ethernet adapter on Z3? I obviously have root, I know about some terminal apps. But if I google this, it gives me only how to install drivers for phone on PC. That is not very helpful. I thing that this is most likelly impossible.
So I've searched something like list of supported devices. No suprise there: no relevant results. Sony Z3 AND Android 6.0.1 AND OTG device list, is probably too specific question.
Another idea what I had is try to use USB 2.0 adapters. You see, I wanted USB 3.0 (even though Z3 have only 2.0 (I still don't get it. Why the hell?)), because they have 1 Gb networks and I could use this adapter sometimes later for different device, like super thin notebook (if I ever would need some light device for travels). Another thing is the fact that 100 Mb is slow for large file transfer (movies and so on, so I have some entertainment, when I will not have my ntb). USB 2.0 can handle up to 480 Mb (in real life more like 300 Mb tops), which is still more than that network. But at this point I just gived up on this, and I will be happy if any ethernet adapter will work.
SO…do you know about any custom ROM, which would handle that? OTG USB ethernet support. Because not even that thing, which worked under 5.1.1 doesn't work under 6.0.1.
Sorry for long post, I needed to give you lot of informations, and why's.
Update
Update 0: OTG USB ethernet adapters doesn't work only on 6.0.1 or on this based ROM's. USB 3.0 doesn't work at all, but USB 2.0 works just fine on 5.1.1.
So…5.1.1 is most likelly the version, which I will be using. 6.0.1 has certain advantages, sure, but to me it seems like completely stupid to remove support for OTG USB ethernet adapters. More devices should be supported in nwer version, not less. And the inablity to remove bloatware even with root… No, this is just wrong. SO I buy my phone, but I have to have some apps, which I don't want and don't use? Ehm…no?
Update 1: I've decided doing it little bit differently. I've installed this ROM. I like how debloated it is, and many other things. USB ethernet adapter doesn't work (obviously), OS doesn't even know that something like ethernet exist. So I decided to try build my own drivers (by compiling source code) or app, or something. Any help is welcome.
Update 2: I currently have this thing. It's just USB 2.0 and 100 Mb/s, but…whatever. Tested on 5.1.1, transfers was 3× faster than on Wi-Fi and batery-enery-usage free (this is why I do this). Now, as stated before, I am on 6.0.1. That ethernet adapter has source code drivers available here. But here is the thing: they keep saing that
the support of this function must be included by the manufacturer directly in the particular Android device

(source) and the source code page saying that it is supported up to Android 5. So…what has changed in Android 6? Why the support is gone? And what will happend if I will try do something in Android studio?
Hello do you have z3 or z3+? I used to Havre z3 and with Lollipop ethernet became broke after 5.1.x I think so I had to reroll kitkat..I gave it away and now I am thinking to buy one z3+ but was fearing Ethernet won't work because it comes delivered with lollipop but now your post gives hope that it is still available. Other phones also have Ethernet capabilities but I found Sony best ... only the loudspeakers are not clear enough for me ... here you find a list with models that support Ethernet

Hello, I have also tested ethernet adapter and it does not work with 6.01 on xperia z1, huawei p9 lite, lenovo yoga 3 tablet.
In xperia z1 with 5.1.1 it works correctly. Something has happened with 6.01 but anyway not all phones or tablets with 5.1.1 work because lenovo yoga 3 with 5.1.1 does not recognize the ethenet adapter.
I think the manufacturer is responsible for not working when it does not integrate the necessary drivers and does not support ethernet. It is the conclusion I came to verify that not all 5.1.1 recognize ethernet adapter and in 6.01 I read that some if you comment that the adapter works (especially in nexus and motorola).
What would be interesting is what comrade BiPentHexium says to be able to include in our room the ethernet support being root.
---------- Post added at 01:09 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:01 PM ----------
On the list of models that support the ethernet adapter, it only refers to the Plugable brand adapter and is based on the reports of its customers. But in that list does not appear the xperia z1 and I can confirm that it works correctly with ethernet adapter (I do not have the plugable)

So no MHL HDMI option so far for the XZ??

Sup, so I recently bought the Xperia XZ because I liked its camera and wanted to plug it to the PC to stream stuff, silly me.
I'm reading in the comments (from 2016) that no MHL has been implemented since the Xperia Z or something, but it actually can be implemented.
So, no news so far?, I'm ready to exchange my phone for another who has MHL capabilities, you could recommend me one while you are it (23 Megapixels)
u can use wireless like screenMirror ,cast or DLNA ...but u probably dont want that...since u want cable connection.
Yeah wireless won't do with my internet.

Connect Xperia to TV using USB-C to HDMI cable? HDMI alt mode capable?

Does the XZ or the XZ Premium support HDMI alternative or alt mode through the USB-C port?
This is what I'm talking about :
https://www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/2016/9/1/12758384/usb-c-hdmi-alt-mode-cables-specifications
I think Sony dropped MHL support because of the google cast.
Not sure if usb C to HDMI works, but you can find out and let us know
Apparently the Snapdragon 835 natively supports Displayport alt mode.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWlkkM8SkDQ
I've bought this HUB with HDMI recently: https://www.amazon.de/Delivery-Auflösung-Ladefunktion-Macbook-ChromeBook/dp/B01BXOW3V0 but haven't got the HDMI Port to work so far, I'll try again later propably.

I've tried it again but it didn't work. The Device might not support Displayport over USB C at all or we just need to wait for an Software Update.
Check if your device supports Displayport alt mode.
Or you could try it with a Displayport alt mode capable USB-C to HDMI cable or adapter.

Hi @AndroPlus.
Thanks for chiming in.
May I ask which USB-C to HDMI cable you tried to use on your Sony Xperia XZ Premium for direct audiovisual output to TV ?
Is your cable DisplayPort alt mode capable?
Thanks.

Is your cable DisplayPort alt mode capable just like this one? This cable here is marketed as DisplayPort alt mode capable and it's supposed to work with Samsung Galaxy S8 which also uses the Snapdragon 835 chipset. So theoretically it should also work with Sony Xperia XZ Premium out of the box.

I tried with multiple TV and monitor, but it didn't work.
[UPDATE]
I checked with HTC U11 and it works, so cable itself is good.
Unfortunately I can confirm that the Sony Xperia XZ Premium does not support Displayport alt mode at this moment in time. Perhaps Sony developers might add Displayport support in the near future though but don't hold your breath.
The hardware capability is there thanks to the incredible Snapdragon 835 but for some reason Sony decided to remove this feature through software or rather a lack thereof.
It's a shame really. Now I need to return this phone and buy a flagship smartphone from one of the competitors just to get this displayport functionality.
Hi, Oreo update has been just released for Sony Xperia XZ Premium. Any new info about USB-C to HDMI output compatibility? Can someone test it? Im thinking of buying this phone, but this is a must have feature for me. No luck with Google search.
Ditto-- any news since Oreo update?
Anyone try since the Oreo update? Results?
I just try to plug in the phone with a switch to usb C dock (capable to use with nintendo switch) but it still didn´t work for me, and nothing appears on the screen. The charging and usb are working correctly, so Oreo still haven´t HDMI support for our Phones
I connected the adapter I bought, and my phone did recognize my TV, but it didn't actually stream video to it.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/xz-premium/how-to/displayport-alt-mode-t3739553
just because a chipset supports something doesn't mean its physically connected, not even having the pins connected on the PCB will determine if it can support it, the hardware could be disabled in multiple locations and supporting chips may not even be present. yes it may well be software limited but don't hold your breath, since time began manufactures have be dropping functions from chipsets
Yes it's possible and feasible. Ignore that lame know-it-all naysayer and doubter above ^^

Thanks for creating a bounty thread for it.
You might want to turn it into a crowd funded fundraiser though.
100 bucks is not much of an incentive for the talented and hard working developers. Keep in mind they do this in their spare time. We must support their hard work.

I have an app called Sentio desktop. It activates if an external display is connected, or a keyboard is connected. I didn't connect a keyboard at that time, so it must've detected an external display. I tried using OTG for plenty of other things. It doesn't make mistakes. Sentio only launched when I connected a keyboard, not external storage, or even a mouse. Only when I connected a 2 in one (mouse+keyboard) did Sentio launch.
And when I hooked my phone up to the TV with the HDMI cable.
Do you think that that piece of information could be useful in making a kernel mod to make it work?

USB-C to HDMI

Hi!
I just received the XZ2 Compact and wondering if a USB-C to HDMI Adapter will work. The SoC supports it but it seems that the support is not integrated. I checked out an adapter that worked perfect with an HTC U11.
The XZ2 Compact itself is a bit thick but awesome, just fell in love with the speed.
Any comments welcome!
USB-C to HDMI and DisplayPort are part of the USB 3.1 standard but the device has to support it. Fortunately, SD835 and 845 both do but Sony admitted they disabled it in their 835 generation as part of a "design decision", even their Open Devices AOSP build can't use it. Any straight USB-C to HDMI or DisplayPort cable would work the same so long as it does not include additional peripherals like a card reader, extra USB ports, or anything else. Give it a try and us know.
No DisplayPort Alt
I just got mine today, no displayport alt support...again. DisplayLink works but audio doesn't as usual and options are limited since it's a proprietary solution.
Sony doesn't do enough with its phones to justify overlooking this. This is my last Sony phone.

As in topic, does asus zenfone 6 have ability to stream out video through usb to hdmi adapter?
After some time android q will come to this device and it will contain native desktop mode so i would like to use it.
I'd like to know the answer as well.
Is it USB 3+ that can do video over type C?
For example One+ 6 has only USB 2.0 over type C, and doesn't support video, while Samsung has USB 3.1 over type C as expected that supports video over type C.
Sure simple type C to HDMI adapter will be needed.
I wasn't able to find any specs for Zen6 type C at all.
any one knows?

According to GSMarena it's 2.0.
I looked at the USB diagrams and it appears that alternate modes over USB-C use the same pins as SuperSpeed meaning that you can't have alternate mode without the other (but not vice versa).
Unless I'm missing something, there shouldn't be any display mode. However I'm not sure if the GSMarena data sheet is accurate.
I currently have sony xperia z3 compact which has usb 2.0 (micro usb, but this doesn't make change IIRC) and also support mhl (see gsmarena https://m.gsmarena.com/sony_xperia_z3_compact-6538.php). In my opinion it doesn't depend on version of usb which device is equiped with, at least it 's not the main reason for not supporting mhl. The question is, does mhl work on zenfone 6 with (potentially, because i couldn't find any information on asus website) usb 2.0 type c connector?

Display output via microusb worked differently as the regular port does not have the pins or bandwidth for it. I had an LG G2 which could also output a display signal. I think it's possible to do the same via USB-C but at the same time I think it's simpler to use alternate mode hence the conclusion I came up with. If I have the time I'll go digging around some more later.
I opened a ticket with ASUS support and they state none of the models they currently sell (including Zenfone 6) cand output HDMI over usb-C.
they might be stupid though, because ROG phone does.

I looked at a few things and I think I was correct in my first post. While I think it would be technically possible to implement MHL on USB-C like they did on MicroB (it would just piggyback off the necessary pins like it used to do), it doesn't seem like it would make sense to do that and I can't find an adapter/cable that would work in that scenario so you'd need 3.1 because they all require Alternate Mode support. However Alternate Mode is an optional spec so just because a device supports 3.1 doesn't mean it'll support display functionality.
I should also note that the ROG Phone has USB-C 3.1 according to GSMArena.
Another note is that it appears that MHL officially lists MHL as working on USB-C via Alternate Mode.
Meanwhile ASUS launching an external display that is advertised to support input from a mobile phone, but hey, no their latest flagship. they are so dumb they are launching devices that don't their other devices..
why would anyone cheap on using usb2.0 connector, when internally SD855 supports 3.1 and so does UFS2.1, is beyond me. It must save la 0.something to use 2.0 instead of 3.1

The OnePlus 6 does support HDMI out with a DisplayLink adapter. It's not great though, as you can't charge it at the same time and it runs the battery down incredibly fast, less than two hours.
Thanks for confirming it, it's a real downer situation though, I was really expecting to have the possibility to output videos through HDMI and potentially do the same with emulators + bluetooth joysticks (since it can handle even gamecube/wii games thanks to the SD855)

IIRC video output via Displaylink adapter works on every device if it can install displaylink app. Displaylink support doesn't depend on mhl support on specific device. I'm just to clarifying for internet strangers.

I'm right there with you buddy. I was so used to MHL that I never questioned whether newer phones would support it or the type-c equivalent. Trying to find a SD855 phone that charges while outputting video is hard enough, let alone one that's rootable with a headphone jack and a non-curved screen (my preference). I'm beginning to think we're going to have to wait until the holiday season when the ROG Phone 2 comes out. In the meantime I'm half-satisfied by using my tablet (shield) hooked to a monitor and keeping my emulator folders synced with my phone with Dropbox/SyncThing.

Nubia red magic 3 is your best best. It doesn't support HDMI output yet but apparently they've said they may support it in a software update. It has USB c 3.1. Also 90hz screen, headphone jack, 5000ma battery, SD 855, it even has a CPU fan lol. It's newly out but I think you can install twrp and root it but customs ROMs might be few if any. It's the closest phone I've found to meeting my needs of 3.5mm, SD 855 and HDMI. Only thing it's missing is expandable really.
