signal problem! - Xperia Z5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi i need some help my signal dies frequently through The Day and i dont know why? Ive tried factory reset, different roms and kernals, i have even replaced my antennas in the Phone but The signal still dies from time to time.

i seem to have a similar issue with celular and wifi and I presume its to do with the kernel
hopefully upcomming updates will fix this
i can definately say atleast in my case although i have very poor wifi signal i get full speed over wifi but for cell its a tad slow but has always been like so across 3 phones now
xperias for some reaso show poor signal when it really isnt that bad

[Q] Frustrating rom problem HELP!!!

Almost every rom I flash ends up having the same problem: I randomly lose signal. Not the crossed out icon, but rather just no bars. This happens while sitting still and there does not seem to be any pattern to it. Some roms it would happen overnight, others it happens during the day. Some roms I can toggle airplane mode on and off to fix it, while others I need to reboot. I always end up back on stock roms because the issue renders all custom roms unusable. Does anyone know what I can do?
silvertag said:
Have you tried going stock and see if the issue arise?
Did you try to go 2G only and see if your signal holds?
It could be a bad 3G signal and your phone is dropping in/out to boost your signal. you could be between two towers and your phone jumps from one to another because of low signal. Could be a bad antenna if the problem persist under stock and 2G only. There are alot of things that can cause this issue and the phone itself can be the source. You have to factor out every possibility to narrow it down.

I'm switching to 2g only and we'll see if it holds. I'll know in a few hours.
I would be surprised if it has to do with towers, it isn't something that happens exclusively in low signal areas.
At work I have full HSUPA+ signal and it still happens, at home I barely get 3g signal and it happens there.
It happens at my girlfriend's house too and there is moderate to high HSUPA+ signal.
The problem DOES NOT persist with stock roms.
DOES NOT lose signal when data is disabled
******************UPDATE***************
even when locked to 2g only, it still loses signal.
Seems to be a hardware issue. I had the same problem on my last phone (a LG-VU) and I red-necked it and stuck a small piece of wire in the phone's antenna. It worked surprisingly and I had no problems with it for the remainer of my contract. But before going to those extremes, I would flash back to stock gingerbread, and try several different ROMs and Modems.

HAve you tried falshing different modems???????
You might have a bad sim card. My phone was doing that last summer, and then one day I couldn't get a signal at all. Rebooting would fix it but only momentarily. I hit up an AT&T store on my lunch the next day and got my sim card swapped and lo and behold, no more problems. LOL I remember I was trying to hide my Cognition boot screen from the tech as my phone was still under warrenty at the time.

Intermittent connectivity issues

Every so often my M8 will basically become disconnected from the network. This NORMALLY appears when I'm in a low coverage zone, and it's as if my phone just doesn't want to reconnect when I get back into a higher coverage area.
For instance at my gym, I frequently get a weak signal, but it's usually 4G. Sometimes it'll drop to 3G, and then sometimes when I get back into an area of the gym that has 4G coverage my phone will say it's still on 3G. However, there's actually no connectivity at all, and I need to either reboot or toggle airplane mode to get a connection again.
Sometimes (at least 2-3 times in the last week) it happened while, at least to the best of my knowledge, I was in a 4G area (though with weak coverage) the entire time. Again I fixed it each time by toggling airplane.
Has anyone else seen an issue like this? It's frustrating as hell. And more importantly has anyone heard of a fix for this?

Yep, actually I had a thread about this a while back; I tried just about everything (other ROMs, new sim cards, factory resets, the whole shebang) and my only solution so far (if you intend on keeping your current phone) is to completely unroot my phone, along with removing all root-related applications (namely Xposed). It still happens from time to time, but a lot less frequently then when rooted and running Xposed modules. I have a new phone coming in today from Verizon, so hopefully that unit will not have any of these issues... I still am not entirely sure what causes it, though it is definitely exacerbated by Xposed. Hopefully some of this helps? If you have any further questions feel free to ask, either through PM or this here thread.

I have a new phone now, and so far I haven't experienced any data connectivity issues. This morning I did notice that my SMS were not sending properly, but that issue has since faded away, so hopefully it was Verizon network based... Anyways, I will try reinstalling Xposed and a couple modules later today (likely Snapshare and the Sense 6 Toolbox) and will report back sometime tomorrow or the next on how it goes. Fingers crossed...

Lol, so after installing Xposed, I suddenly started having issues maintaining a solid 4G connection; 3G works fine, just whenever I do manage to connect to 4G I am unable to use any data (says I am connected to the mobile network, but I do not get any upload or download data movement). Even after removing Xposed and all associated modules, I am still experiencing this problems. I am going in today/Monday to get a new SIM card (hopefully this is what is causing my issues) but goddamn I just cannot seem to catch a break in terms of my phones' data connection. If the above doesn't work I may have to send for another phone, though after having now received three replacements this entire process is getting a little irksome... I really do love this phone, but it seems as if it is my M8 is rejecting my love from every angle.
UPDATE: The new SIM didn't do anything, I still am having 4G issues, so another phone it is...
it's not just your phone....

I dumped mine could not handle it anymore get rid of it before you loose any more money. I have had a lot of phones when there bad from the start they don't usually get any better. The Droid Bionic being the only exception.

I had the same problem with my new M8 when travelling from/to areas with low or no data coverage back to areas where I knew there was a LTE signal. Only toggling Airplane Mode would make the data reconnect. That problem was solved for me with a new sim card.
I also had very bad data connectivity at home in a major southern California city (best was -105 dBm) whereas I got up to -83 dBm in some rural town in Arizona.
Read trook's posts #34 and up here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=53838257
Some of these problems may be connected to the new data service VZW is rolling out.
I would wait a few weeks before ditiching this phone. 'Cause it rocks!!!

it has nothing to do with the AWS rollout - i have a Verizon Galaxy S5 sitting right next to my M8 ---- guess what - consistent data speeds on the s5 (15 mbs down)......on the m8 (3-4mbs down) - and the data flucutates and in the signal meter , I'm getting about -6db less on the M8 than the s5.
trust me, i so desperately want to keep this phone, b/c quite frankly, i hate the amoled screen on the s5, but alas, i cant keep a phone that doesn't work well

yes - sorry bro - i'm quite disappointed by what i am seeing with my own two eyes as well as all the others across the US and the rest of the world who are experiencing the SAME symptoms. so this is not a verizon network issue --
me thinks its a faulty radio which is causing bad handoffs between 3g and 4g (LTE). once the phone drops down to 3g, it never regains 4g signal for some reason. also, there is the issue of the constant signal fluctuations even when the phone is on LTE...so who knows. maybe combo of bad radio and poor quality antenna module.
i'm not a phone engineer but i have enough common sense and knowledge about phones to know a lemon when i see one......so, yup, i'm keeping the s5 and return the m8 tomorrow under the 14 day guarantee from verizon. shame....

To tell the truth I have been reading about the same issue on the general M8 forum - probably just didn't want to make the connection.... So thanks for opening my eyes.
I'm hoping for bad radio software that may get fixed with some future update (although my 6th sense tells me it's the bad antenna module....)
Too late for me for a clean exchange. Gonna have to read the Squaretrade fine print.....

Problems with reception

Hello.
Bought this OPO recently second hand. It sadly had an issue with connectivity. It has really bad reception 99% of the time, no matter where you are. Below -103 dBm and is rarely usable at all.
I have noticed though, that it sometimes gets really good reception with +HSPA, but then it switches to 3G, and the reception dives to < 100 dBm (most often unusable). It does the same when roaming on the 2G-net - sometimes good reception, but most often really bad.
I have flashed different basebands, but didn't help, so I expect it to be a hardware issue. Does anybody have any idea, what it could be? I can fix most things myself, as long as I know what the issue is and where to get the spare part.
Thanks in advance!
Okay. So I haven't actually been using 4G a lot, but I got around to testing it yesterday. It seems 4G isn't affected by the problem, since it holds a 4G service really well. But as soon as it switches to 3G/+H, the reception drops dramatically.
Same problem here. I have tried many ROMs but the problem isn't solved. Now I am trying to flash .img files one by one and I will tell you how it goes a few days later.
...
Hello again,
After flashing all .img files one by one it still didn't work. The problem was that the previous owner of this phone had the IMEI changed. So I found a guy to recover its original IMEI and now it's all fine.

Reception issues even on wifi?

Am I holding the phone wrong I can get bad reception even when on wifi sometimes. I had the phone for probably 2 weeks before I rooted and I dont really recall having issues nearly as much is it possible the rom I am on is causing issues? I was on the twrp salfish for about a week and I have been on the pure nexus rom for a few weeks both roms where equal in terms of reception so I am thinking its not a root issue.
But I mean if I am on wifi in my house or at work I can be right next to the router and still get terrible reception. Its often not much better when out and about and not on wifi but I am on wifi probably 80% of the time so I dont know whats going on. I am seriously considering going back to stock to see if that fixes it but I am also eagerly awaiting a specific rom to come out of testing.
Any suggestions would be great, anything from settings to vendor img or hacks whatever. It seems like me reception is crap more than its not. I really want to keep using google fi but I wasnt even having the slightest issue with verizon before this.

Poor signal strength

Just received my Xperia 5 II. I'm enjoying it so far but unfortunately one of the most basic requirements is letting it down, 4G signal strength. I'm on Vodafone and using the SIM in my Mate20 Pro I can gain full bars. However using the same SIM in this phone I barely get one bar with the status showing around 105 - 115 dBm. Out of curiousity I switched to GSM using the test menu and it dropped to 85 dBm. Anyone experiencing similar?
Thanks.

Hi!! I have the terminal for about 1 week. I have the same problem. I have Vodafone Spain. I think it is a software problem because I have compared with a Realme x2Pro and the indicator is very good, the values are similar in Xperia. So I think it is an OS problem. Without any coverage bars, the phone makes calls without problems. They are not cut or similar.
That's good to hear thanks! Hopefully Sony can be made aware of this and provide a software update! As I type this it's sat between 0 and 1 bar
Do you have Vodafone ROM? Flashing an original Sony ROM may fix the problem. Can be?
It's pretty much out of the box and updated to the latest software. Interestingly my H+ speed is twice as fast as my 4G speed!
I've just logged in to create a thread about this problem, and I see that I'm not the only one experiencing it. It's really frustrating, my previous device (essential) in the same spot with the same sim card, can achieve 3(!) times faster download speed

Same problem here with wifi and 3g (h).
Waiting fix for this issue..
I want to think that it is a software problem. Seeing that there are many people with the same problem, I do not think that all the devices are bad.
Unless the issue is due to hardware by design. They might've opted for a cheaper antenna system that doesn't get enough signal. In that case we're screwed.
I read quite a few posts regarding the X1ii having the same issue, that doesn't give me much hope! Thankfully I'm in the 14 day return period so I will keep an eye on this thread and also the signal when I'm in the car etc.
I am experiencing the exact same issues on 4G LTE here in canada. And I don't understand what's going on because apart from my home going outside and using data exclusively I'm getting full speeds 4G plus no problem. However certain times of the day primarily during the evening I do have hiccups where I have dropped connection and it takes a while for the phone to just do its thing and then get to have the internet back. With regard to the low signal yeah I'm getting full service my phone calls are working properly text messages are sending but I'm only getting one to two or even zero bars on 4G LTE.
This is all on my brand new Sony Xperia 5 mark ii. I'm hoping the update to Android 11 or a couple of security patches down the line or lifespan of this device will fix this issue. But I'm going to try not to concern myself with it as of yet because again the one place I thought I wouldn't be able to get anything which is my use of the phone outside in public I was able to get full if not better service than anything I did at home. And at home it's not that bad either it's just one point in time the signal will cut off and drop.

You have said it. He receives calls correctly and works perfectly. So I think it is a software bug. It does not mark the coverage well. The values are similar on other devices. At least in my case.
The speeds I tested personally have huge differences, so at least for me, there is a significant difference

I am really hoping that it's a software bug and nothing more. Hopefully it will get addressed. it was interesting going into my local Telus having neither of the representatives in store know what VOLTE was. I was baffled I figured people that work there would have an idea of the services involved or bundled with what they're offering LOL but I think I'm better off dealing with tech support hahaha
I was browsing the XP 5 M2 forums here with the intend to import this phone to India as it seemed an excellent buy. Now after seeing the poor signal issue, I have my concerns. However, you can try doing the following and report back
1. Check "mobile network standby" usage under the battery settings. If the signal actually is too low, this value should be in high percentages -maybe above 10% of the overall battery consumption.
2. Download and install GSAM/BBS battery monitor app and check the standby drain per hour on 4G/LTE, keeping the phone idle overnight or not use it for an hour during day time. Ideally it should be less than 1-1.5%/hr during the day on idle and overnight should be less than 1.0%/hr on LTE. If this is the case, its only the signal bars and a software issue. Avoid measuring on WIFI as the drain is usually much less on wifi anyways.
3. Download and install 'Network Cell Info" (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wilysis.cellinfolite) and check the actual strength with different phones at the same spot and same time. Cellphones do switch towers frequently even at the same spot. This app will give detailed info on the signal strength and towers (if your telco provides). It will also show where the towers are located approximately and you can compare phones on how they stack up in a similar setting.
4. Force 4g/LTE mode only under network preferences (if available). Check the dBm and ASU levels in this mode and see if it's any different from 5G/4G mode.
If the standby drain is low and the phone lasts a day or more on normal usage, then no need of worry, its the signal bars that are showing wrong. I'd like to hear back from you all as my purchase decision will be based on your feedback on standby drain.
Ah, finally the same issues as I am experiencing. I also have only one or sometimes zero bars. The people I call also tell me connection is bad. Sounds drop, we can't talk simultaneously and so on. Sometimes I can't even internet with wifi. I also hear people on the phone that sounds drop.
I don't feel comfortable about all the suggestions to enable or disable stuff in the default settings, set preferred network to only 4g or disables 5g;
1- I tried this but doesn't make a difference
2- This should work out of the box. I have several phones (samsung, Iphone, Oneplus) and none of these have these problems.
Sometimes I do have full bars, and the internet is very good. I noticed this yesterday. And once on the other side told me the quality was allright, but almost all the time the strength is zero to one bar and quality is really bad.
I also tried a new simcard, no difference. Vodafone also sent it to repaird and I got a complete boardswap, but no difference.

It's really disappointing for a phone that costs around 900 euros to suck at the most important task that it has to do. Yesterday I was sitting with a friend of mine that has an OnePlus 6T. He had full bars and I was between 1 and 2 bars. I haven't seen full bars ANYWHERE. I don't know what is wrong, I hope it's a software bug or something, but I'm not optimistic about that

to compare signal quality you have to download netmonster, bars are not good to make a comparison, however compared to my old mate 20 pro the signal quality is good despite sometimes i have 1 bar if you open netmonster you can see good value, no complain at all , btw i live in Rome.
But I experience also bad quality. WiFi and cellular. My Samsung, iPhone and OnePlus didn't have problems with my WiFi also it's was weak upstairs, but my Sony has sometimes no WiFi at all.
And when calling, not over WiFi, sounds is bad, is dropping a lot.
Looks like Sony can't handle a weak signal as good as other phones?
