do you guys think the camera quality will be improved in a future software update ? kitkat perhaps ? they did it with the nexus 5
I think they will definitely fix it by the January update but I wouldn't expect more than what they did for the Moto X.
I'm guessing unlikely. Unlike the Moto G, those other phones got fixes because they were premium devices and have capable hardware, which caused turmoil among their user base pre-fix.
Mostly no one expects a budget phone such as the Moto G to do better than it already does.
Unlikely...it's just the way it is

Meanwhile you can try alternative camera apps like VSCO or Focal (CynogenMod Camera App) - with a bit of patience I can produce good not oof pictures.
+1 for Snap Camera in Play Store.
Is it really that bad? How's the shutter speed?

The shutter speed is good, but the quality of the photos is not very good in dim lighting. Sometimes it is necessary to take more than one shot to get a satisfactory result.
I think it's just a poor camera to be honest, remember how little this thing costs

Yep this is what I suspect.
I don't think it'll be software especially after the Moto X.

I would, but I'm only getting the phone on Tuesday :/
Maybe someone else can shine some light for the curious?
Yep, the same here. Can't wait for my order to arrive...
Bought the Moto G for £99 here in the UK and was a choice between the Sony Xperia L for a similar discounted price and the camera on the Moto G is worse than my HTC Desire from several years ago! I'm still within the 28 returns period so could possibly buy the Sony to test at home too but even with the new camera update, pictures have so much noise I have actually checked the glass covering the lens several times for any plastic etc they might have left on it for packaging. Apart from the camera the Moto G feels like a £300+ phone but I think the Sony Xperia L which has 8MP Camera as well as MicroSD slot etc might be the better phone for the same money.
I used to have an N5 then swapped it for a G2. G2 took a nose dive in some ocean so bought another N5. I dont remember it being so awful at taking pics but now that certain users and their awesome mods have been removed from XDA, Im wondering if anyone knows of any good camera mods or tricks to improve overall still picture quality of the N5?
There are a few things that I recommend to all of my friends that buy a Nexus 5. Out of those 5 or so things, 2 of them are for the camera / recording.
Jishnu's Camera Fix 1.5
Chdloc's Audio Fix (installer by Aroma)
Flash both in recovery and enjoy a better performing and better sounding camera!

Out of interest, what are the other things you recommend to your friends?
I'm on the verge of RMA-ing my v1 build nexus 5 due to GPS, battery, and now massively grainy camera quality, and so if/when I get a fresh v2 build i'm planning on going the right way about it, rooting immediately and loading up the best optimisers. Thanks!

hardware-modding a qx1 onto your nexus 5 will give you a much better camera... you have interchangable lens too, can do tele-zoom if you want to

Nope. Its complete rubbish. One guy took that one photo about how he had bigger holes (which he did) but wrongly assumed it was a "new version" then every idiot tech blog and news site cloned his article as truth and Brought about one of the biggest misconceptions in technology news history.
I'm sorry but there is only one version. Buy a brand new nexus manufactured yesterday, you may have big holes, you may have little holes. Its not because of different versions. Its because there are big variations in their production lines
I wrote a thread about it here
Will everyone please stop talking about different hardware versions?

I just wonder why sony z3 is sometimes behind imaging with other flagships especially when it comes to iPhone 6. In my opinion, iphone 6 takes way better photos except maybe in complete darkness where z3 ramps up iso. Is the camera hardware of z3 insufficient or is it the software? Can it be on par with other flagships if software is fixed? Auto in iPhone is much better versus in z3
Sent from my D6633 using XDA Free mobile app
Ironically enough the iPhone 6 like many others including the Galaxy Note 4 use Sony Exmor Sensors. The Z3 has a better sensor than them but the software processing on "auto" mode on Sony is detestable. If you switch to "manual" it takes much better pictures. Sony does not bother fixing its auto mode for some reason.
Yeah auto sucks but I guess the manual is on par but not really "superior". So this means hardware on z3 is more capable and this can be solved all in software aspect. Or maybe there are other "hardware" on other flagships that are better than z3?
Sent from my SGP621 using XDA Free mobile app
No, its the software optimization. I get really good pics sometimes then horrible ones at other times, mostly leaning to horrible. So that is why I use "manual" its far more consistent and photos are good though it can be a core to change settings based on lighting conditions.

No one except sony can answer this question... Since we have been thinking this since they launched the mobile phone...but still neither they bother nor we get any answers from any one..
Also my former Oppo find 7a uses Sony sensor and the pictures I made with it were top! It even had a long exposure option

I wouldn't, already have Canon equipment. Similar deal with their point and shoot cameras as the Z Series phones in terms of the superior auto
Its all software Sony needs to use camera software from one of their DSLR cameras be nice if we could port something like that. Its the best camera sensor just need better software

I was just about to post about the image differences between the Z3 and the Iphone 6. I was trying to demonstrate tonight with a friend that my new Z3 upgrade was better than his new Iphone 6 so I did a camera comparsion.... And I wish I hadn't.
The IPhone 6 shot was far superior. My image was grainy and horrible when zoomed in, compared to the sharpness of the I6.
Kinda sucks I don't want to mess with a bunch of settings just to get a decent photo.
Athough I did root my Z3 so hope I haven't messed with the DRM keys. How do I check they are still there? (I haven't unlocked the boatloader)
Just to put the picture quality into perspective... My shot was worse than my previous. M7.

Thinking of switching to a mate 8. What are your guys opinion ? Also if anyone would be interested in trading me for my 64gb 6p . Also how is the camera quality in other apps such as instagram, snapchat ,etc? I remember on my old lg v10 it looked horrible due to not being optimized. thanks
Only thing this phones missing is pure aosp or cm Roms. Other than that, this is the phone the 2015 nexus should've been
cm roms wouldnt offer much more than the huawei roms, theyre already choke full of functions and extra settings as for aosp looks, u can adapt those easily via themes or custom launcher, no problem there.
im actually very happy that i didnt go the 6p route, the mate 8 is definitely the best phone ive ever had!

I just thinking sell my z5 p and get mate 8. Still can't decide it is worth or not
If the nexus 6P was six inches and had a 4000mah battery I would have gotten that. It doesn't so to me the Mate 8 is better. If a manufacturer doesn't put in a large battery, I don't buy their device.
Mate 8 is better then nexus 6P as well as Z5.
I.have used both for some time.
Battery life is amazing

Niiiicccceeee. Can't wait till Friday.
I hope post processing improves
It is surely Nokia 8 , at last normal camera app!
My previous phone, Asus Zenfone 2 had a proper 'Pro' mode. I pretty much experiment with it all the time and was able to get some interesting shots.
Which is what the Nokia 8 lacked. I take a lot of photos with my phone, so having a Pro mode is what I would want.
Since the camera's post processing wasn't that great either. The camera notably degraded in performance in low light conditions. And throughout my experience owning the Nokia 8, the camera app was buggy from time to time. I hope that will be fixed in the upcoming update. Since the sensor on the Nokia 8 was actually pretty decent for what it is.
Definitely can't wait.
