Question about Nexus 5. - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'd like to install Kali Nethunter on my Nexus 5 6.0.1 m4b40x. It's been years since I have rooted a phone and I'm seeing a lot of conflicting info. Can I root this phone and put a custom bootloader on it? If I root it do I have to run a custom ROM? I ran Pacman rom years ago and would rather just stick to the rom I have now.
TIA!

[Q] Question regarding rooting Nexus 5 and subsequent upgrades

Hi all,
Looking for some advice please as a newbie to Android.
I have a Nexus 5 32gb on order that is being delivered any day now.
My assumption is that when I turn it on, it will have Android 4.4 installed as default.
I intend to immediately root my device prior to setting it up with all my personal data etc.
My questions are:
Do I install the 4.4.2 update OTA prior to rooting the device? I imagine this would make the most sense as there may not be further updates for a while - is this right?
If I do install the 4.4.2 update OTA and then root the device - for future updates, do I then have to install a 'Custom Rom'? - for example if/when Android upgrades to 4.5
Are there some good guides showing how to install a stock/vanilla Android upgrade?
If/when I install a 'Custom Rom' of 4.5 , what would happen to my root priviledges? I assume they would disappear? what then?
Is there a good repo/site for stock/vanilla Android OS?
Many thanks in advance,
litfoo
You'll want to first update to 4.4.2, as it will save a bit of time.
What happened with my Nexus is I rooted it while on the 4.4.1 update, and then when 4.4.2 came around, I was able to use OTA which installed it through TWRP. I had to re-root my device and reinstall TWRP after this.
There are guides on how to sideload OTA updates, which is a way to update android.
Most custom roms will come with root, so you may not have to re-root.
Factory nexus 5 images are available here

Many thanks for this .
So - once rooted, I can flash device with an updated Factory Nexus 5 image? If yes, I assume this will lose root?
If I wanted a custom rom of a factory Nexus5 image, but with root - where's the best place to find these and what are the most popular ones?

already running ElementalX 5.1 on rooted Nexus 5, easy way to update to ElementalX 6?

Sorry for the noob question but someone helped me root and install ElementalX many months ago and I've just been keeping it up to date using the ElementalX Ex Kernel Manager software which has been awesome and super easy to use. One-click updates and so on.
I'm already rooted and running a custom rom so my wishful thinking tells me it should be easy to update to the latest Marshmallow version of ElementalX.. IE I'm hoping I don't have to flash back to stock first.. get adb working again and run a bunch of commands etc. Plus lose all my configuration settings?
Maybe that's the only way but I thought I would ask first just in case there is in fact a dead easy way to do it considering my circumstances.
Many thanks to any who take the time to school me

At first, do you have a Marshmallow build? If you are on Lollipop, you can't install ElementalX 6.
Do you have a custom recovery?
You won't lose anything by flashing a new kernel.

Nexus 5 - Unrooting question

Hi Guys
I have an old nexus 5 which I've decided to go back to after the zte i bought to replace it when the battery died became to buggy and unreliable.
I rooted the phone when i first got it so I could copy over some apps from my old HTC (mostly my save game from Drag racing)
I never used any custom recovery or Roms on the phone & I lost root when i did the OTA update to marshmallow.
I wasnt hugely botheered by this and never re-rooted the phone.
Yesterday I tried to install Android Pay which wont let me set it up because the phone is rooted.
Ive relocked the bootloader but am still unable to use androoid pay.
I've had a look around for unrooting advice on here most of which discuss reflashing the stock firmware.
As the phone is already stock is there a way i can unroot without having to wipe the phone?
Thanks
Grant

Recommendation for Oreo and maybe Custom ROM

I'm not really a very advanced user, but always had rooted devices and two that I flashed Custom Roms. This is my first Samsung, finding Touchwiz to be very different from what I used before.
I bought the S7 (930F) and had the news that it was going to be updated to Oreo, so I decided waiting for the update before tinkering with it.. But the update never came. Finally this month Samsung released the update for my region, so I would like to know which would be the best way for me to start finally using my phone that I bought for over 2 months!
My phone is still with Nougat, is it better for me to get the OTA or to flash the Firmware I downloaded from Sammobile? Any of these methods better than the other in preventing errors? I always found in PCs that a fresh clean install was better than an update, but with mobiles I don't have the experience to say.
My main objective is to experiment before doing a debloat as I'm still not sure what might be useful for me on Samsung's bloat (you are welcome to point me what is useful and what is not).
I did see that some of the Customs ROMS have different camera apps and some people were complaining about this, I particularly liked the S7 camera app and the Pro option, that's what holds me back in flashing a Custom ROM atm.
I would like to Root and I find Unlocked Bootloader to be useful to have Xposed Framework and other things that I can do having it.
As I'm a relative newbie, what would you guys recommend me doing? Please help
tl;dr: I want to have Oreo, be able to debloat, want to root and unlock bootloader, not sure about Custom Rom.
Lineage if you want basic and simple (sort of like stock Android). Resurrection Remix if you're a customisation nut (not a slam... I use RR).
If you wonna full samsung u need flash base firmawre custom roms only 8.0 android
If you dnt need samsung integration (pulsometr doesnt work) you can flash 8.1 roms try cosmic os or Lineage 15

Trouble Downgrading to KitKat

Hi there.
I've recently dug up my Nexus 5 and wanted to downgrade it to KitKat for nostalgia.
However I couldn't get it to work. Always stayed at the Google-Logo and then Restarted.
So in order to unbrick it I installed TWRP and flashed Lineage 17.1 which worked. (Lineage 17.1 is currently the only Rom I got to work actually)
Now my end goal would be to install a KitKat Version of CyanogenMod but when flashing that it doesn't boot again. (Same as with the Factory Image)
Long story short: What am I missing here/How can I downgrade to CM11? I feel like the answer is simple but I just can't figure it out.
Thanks in advance
