Central Europe vs Customized UK firmware for AT&T - Sony Xperia XZ Questions & Answers

What's the difference b/w Central Europe vs Customized UK firmware for use with AT&T? I live in the US and just want to enable the fingerprint reader. Dont want to lose signal or VOLTE functionality.
Everyone here is using the customized UK firmware. However I can only find Central Europe MM to download. Could I just go with Central Europe?
Add: to be specific, I can only find this one to use: F8331_39.0.A.3.30_R6B_Central Europe 1 Generic_1304-9023
Thanks a lot

then why is everyone in the US here trying to get the UK version firmware?

In my experience (with my Z3), the differences between firmware regions amount to things like no NFC icon in the status bar or "4G" instead of "LTE" icons. Sometimes the pre-installed software is slightly different. But the core software was always the same.

With UK firmware, you will not see LTE on the mobile data bar, only 4G, and you will have a permanent NFC icon. With the CE1 firmware, you will see LTE and no NFC icon. I much prefer the CE1 status bar. As for why everyone is using the UK firmware, I think it's just because it's the most widely posted firmware that worked to unlock the fingerprint on the Z5, so it's continued to be used by default on xda.

Thanks for your reply. However I just found that the voLTE function is not working (I'm with AT&T and it will downgrade to H+ when I'm making a phone call). And some people claim they are able to use voLTE with UK firmware. That's why I'm asking.:crying:

Ohh, I see. I've been using CE1 since before the Nougat update, so I don't know about volte yet. I'm very interested to hear from those who have UK and if volte really works.
That said, it looks like Sony is slowly rolling out volte updates to all the regions, so if you're not in a big hurry all regions should eventually receive the volte functionality. Hopefully.

I'm on the UK firmware and my NFC icon displays in the status bar if I switch NFC on.

I flashed CE1 on my phone that was running Customised NOBA (Nordic) and phone works just fine, smooth and no force closures at all.
I needed to download internet/mms settings as an extra step in order to get optimal speeds over LTE. One thing is missing though, VoLTE is
nowhere to be found. I spoke with carrier support guys and they told me that its firmware related. ITs not a deal braker but I will definitely
flashing my original nougat firmware in near future.

[Q] International (D6603) vs T-Mobile (D6616) pros/cons

For those of us who will be using T-Mobile as our carrier and are considering buying an international variant of the Z3 instead of the T-Mobile variant, what are all of the pros/cons? There's only a few that I can think of, and some important ones that we need someone to confirm if possible.
Pros:
Unlocked bootloader
Color options other than black
Cons:
No international variant with LTE Band 12 support
No VoLTE support?
No WiFi Calling support (Android 4.4.4 or Android 5.0)?
Can't use Jump! (ie. no insurance)
Although perhaps negligible, less battery life (from having more frequency support)?
16GB Internal Storage
Pretty much summed it up. The battery life difference should be negligible. T-Mobile version does have 32GB internal storage as well.

There is only one thing I cannot find any clarification on, and that's whether or not the T-Mobile version as Band 12 support. T-Mobile's site says no - Sony's site says yes. Do we know which to believe?

I would say that the T-Mobile version definitely has Band 12, but that it isn't active yet and will be turned on when the network is ready.

There's no debate on this. The T-Mobile version (D6616) has LTE Band 12. T-Mobile may simply not be listing it because they don't want to advertise a network that isn't up yet.

Thanks, glad to hear it.
After the Moto X "Pure Edition" I purchased as supposedly having Band 12 and finding out it didn't, I'm overly cautious I guess! Then again, I live in the Bay Area and I think T-mo has a lot of work to do to clear up the Band 12 licenses here unfortunately.
-Collin-
One think to mention of the international version is that it isn't carrier locked and that it is free from T-Mobile's bloatware. I also like a device without carrier's logo on it. Copper and White Z3s looks awesome. Happened the same with my first Xperia Z1, it was international version purple color when all other T-Mo customers has black Z1s.

There is something else that is unclear to me: • VoLTE support! I did see the T-Mobile's version having an option in settings>call settings: Enable VoLTE if available (check mark). So international version won't have this?
I don't know if the D6603 has the VoLTE menu ootion, however on a hardware level I believe it does.

Thanks. I was ready to buy an unlocked version, but I saw this thread, so I searched online yesterday for a good 30+ minutes, even Z3's white pages, specs, but nothing that would mention VoLTE. The interesting thing that I found is that Xperia Z3 Compact, does mention VoLTE support. I also emailed few people on youtube that had made videos about Z3, waiting on their reply.
Anyone able to confirm if T-Mobile VoLTE works on the D6603 model? Screenshot showing the HD icon?

I had a D6603 using it on tmobile for a good week. No Volte and no Wifi calling. Thats confirmed.
This white paper PDF from the Sony Developer World website contains charts showing the differences between all the Z3 models. It also shows LTE band 12 support in model D6616.

Load TMobile software on a D6603 Z3??
Hey everyone. I own a international Sony Xperia Z3 model D6603 and was wondering if it was possible to load US TMobile D6616 software on it in order to enable WiFi calling/texting??
Thanks for everyone's help!
I would imagine so. Just use FlashTool and XperiFirm, but be ready to roll back with the proper files in case something goes wrong. So I'm not 100% sure, but I'd imagine you can if the hardware is similar enough. Do at your own risk, though - perhaps someone who knows more than me about this could chime in.

T-Mobile band 12 VOLTE does it work? F3113

I am @ Bestbuy and want to buy the xperia xa F3123 right now. Can anyone quickly let me know band12 VOLTE works on T-Mobile and/or MetroPCS? Thanks in advance.
Well it seems as though VOLTE does not work on this device. It's weird because the whitepaper on sonymobile site says that this device does support VOLTE. I will be returning the device if this does not work.

Yep i thought It did aswell, I'm in the UK on three UK and though I think it is network dependant too in the build prop file it does say something volte=0 it may be just turned off. Also not convinced that the white paper is even correct if this is the case.

Update: more settings
The VOLTE setting in build.prop are:
ro.mtk_ims_support=0
ro.mtk_volte_support=0
persist.mtk.volte.enable=0
persist.dbg.volte_avail_ovr=0
Can someone with root access change it to 1 and reboot your device? After this check through setting to see if there is VOLTE or Advanced Calling somewhere. Also try a call and see if LTE stays connected.
I tried all of those build.prop settings. I get the Enable VOLTE option in settings but all calls drop to UMTS/HSPA. Sony Mobile support on their forumkeep pointing to the whitepaper and blaming the carrier. I tried a T-Mobile sim and an AT&T sim. No VOLTE. I tried Bell Canada ROM and journalist ROM. Still no VOLTE. Guess I will be returning the device. Too bad because the hardware is great.

Specs according to my network three UK clearly states volte voice over 4glte strange...
EDIT: From what I can gather it's all done automatically on my network at least, especially if you use there WiFi/volte calling app called three in touch for when you have no network coverage it was originally intended as a WiFi calling app but now supports volte apparently and for now must be on my carrier firmware(more or less a customised UK ftf only there splash screen and two of there apps both needed) not that this probably helps you but it is supported(network dependant)

Three UK, but until I can find somewhere I can't get a normal signal I can't try it out. I've checked my carrier supports it they do, they say my xa supports it but it will only kick in when all other methods of making a call fail. Shame really, for me it's a great device

And changing some overlay apps and changing modem to VoLTE as well.

It's network dependant so even if you enable the volte toggle in settings via build prop if your network doesn't have volte you can't use it. Still trying to figure out who is right. My network advertise the xa as 4g super voice(what my network call volte) capable out of the box as do Sony yet there's no toggle or mention of volte calling anywhere in the device. Three UK reckon it'll only revert to volte calling if all other methods of making a call fail first say if your in a area with no or little reception. It's a sim free network unlocked device running my networks slightly tweaked customised UK ftf with only a splash screen and a few apps for account info and a WiFi calling app

That statement about volte as a last resort sounds backwards from how every other volte phone works. They prioritize volte. Also thanks for speaking up in my Sony Mobile forum thread. The more people bug Sony, the better chance we have of getting a straight answer. If we end up with working volte support I may purchase this device again. I really do like the size & form.

Youll still be able to restore your phone to factory if need be, using your TA backup?

Yes however I don't require root as much as I used to. Sony supply a native aosp look and feel which fits my bill. And I'm liking the use of my mobile banking apps lately so root will make that use very difficult if not impossible.

You will find it with Xperifirm.
BUT: Be very careful to check if you can flash this on an US phone.
Most phones in the US are carrier locked - for updates you are at the mercy of your carrier or beg for letting you off his hook (unlock the bootloader).

The only problem you can face is signal reception. I live in USA too and I had UK firmware flashed on my XZ (Noticed UK ftf works better and faster) and I wasn't getting good mobile signal at my work or home + some other areas around the city. I flashed USA version back and mobile signal strength increased again and now I have signal anywhere I go around the City where I couldn't get with UK firmware (I live in Colorado) I dont know if NOBA ftf will cause that too thought. I am on T-Mobile network.

I am no expert here: some ROMs could disable or enable certain GSM or LTE bands depending on the country version and their market or regulations.
I was quite satisfied with reception when traveling the south of the USA with my German (or Central Europe?) ROM on T-Mobile USA. And still am in many different regions of this beautiful planet - last month South Africa.
Head over to the SONY cross device forum. There are some tools to just unlock all bands available on our Qualcomm Modem.

Cool, I'll check it tonight... The thing with US is the fingerprint, if there's a way to just trigger the fingerprint, that would be awesome, read from a Z5 forum:good:

US T-Mobile VoLTE support?

Does the US version support US T-Mobile VoLTE without reflashing mixing US oem.sin into foreign firmware?
You'd need to be on US region firmware to use VoLTE. For example, I flashed my Xperia 1 (J9110) to J8170 and everything works, including VoLTE - except for the 2nd sim.
It's carrier depending. The Sony is cable.

Silly me. I didn't realize this isn't out yet. GSMArena indicated October release, and I assumed it was already out and came here.
I suppose we won't know if the Xperia 5 sold in the US (ie Amazon, BestBuy, Adorama, etc) will support VoLTE out of the box. XperiFirm shows:
J8210 (listed in GSMArena) - UK & Ireland
J9210 (listed in GSMArena) - Europe, UK, Russia, Taiwan, HK and China
J8270 (listed in GSMArena) - Not found in XperiFirm
SOV41 (not mentioned in GSMArena) - Japan
901SO (not mentioned in GSMArena) - Japan
I suppose it will support VoLTE, as I read in the past in another thread about how the international firmwares recently started including VoLTE for the US. I am still on the XZ1 Compact, so I don't have any personal experience.
EDIT: Sorry, the thing about US VoLTE support in international firmwares might have been from the Samsung threads. I've been researching the S10e and Xperia 5 as my next phone after my XZ1 Compact, that my brain is fried.

IT does not. Here in Denmark, Sony got zero volte or wofi, it's carrier lablet.
And they know, phones is NOT Sony's prime, no more.
We all remember the SE back in the days. :good:
Have a European 5 that I flashed to US version (firmware is now on Xperifirm) and VoLTE does work on T-Mobile US.

Any chance that WiFi calling works as well? I'm seriously considering this device as an upgrade from the XZ1 compact. I'm probably hoping for too much here as that would have required a certification.
Unfortunately WiFi calling is not showing up for me on T-Mobile US. I can't remember the last time this was an issue. I'll call them later today to see whether the plan on whitelisting the Xperia 5 for WiFi calling.
I also can't tell if we're actually using VoLTE or not. The option is there in setting and LTE stays connected during a call, but I'm not certain whether the call is actually connecting nicer LTE.

Okay, thanks. As far as the VoLTE, I've found the LTE Discovery app works well. Just make a call and verify it's still using band 12

I just made a call and watched the app. Unfortunately I remained on Band 4 during the call. Sounds like this means the call was not using VoLTE. Very disappointing.
Just received a call and there phone app said the call was over WiFi. That setting is nowhere to be found so that's interesting.
The person on the other end did confirm a echo on speaker phone, though. Not sure how to get rid of that.

Thank you. That's an interesting find. Also, I wouldn't expect the phone to switch during a call from band 4 to band 12. The only way to see would be to find a spot where you're on band 12 and see if it switches away during a call. It should stay on the strongest signal band.

Ah, I misunderstood your point about band 12 originally, apologies. I received calls yesterday and today and the Phone app says "calling over data," so I guess that is how they're saying VoLTE. I swear the terminology shown for both VoWiFi and VoLTE was different on my OnePlus 7 Pro.
In summary, for those skipping to the end, VoWiFi and VoLTE seem to work (on T-Mobile USA) even though it's not obvious.

VoLTE is available and works
I do not think WIFI calling is enabled/allowed on this phone.
I could not find wifi calling settings to enable/disable on the phone, so i did some tests to check if it works:
1. When I call within a WIFI network and TMobile off, the calls wont go through.
2. Also, when everything is on and I am connected on WIFI but very poor TMobile connection, I do not see WIFI calling

There is indeed no option to enable this but WiFi calling does work on T-Mobile USA.
I bought the phone last week. I compared the bands and connectivity with my XZ1 Compact. It definitely has VoLTE including band 12, but unfortunately it does not have any working WiFi calling on Tmo. No option and it doesn't make calls or texts on WiFi only connections.
I will say that it does seem to have a slightly better signal strength than my XZ1 Compact had.
Bump for any updates?
I get calls in lte mode so yeah I'd say USA volte works

Question Honor Magic VS Global Launch

Hi All
Just wondering if you anyone has received the Honor Magic VS Global model yet? I check and it looks like its on sale in Malaysia from today (not Europe still no ETA Yet)
has anyone got stock yet? Or know Malaysian website site that can ship internationally
It will be available in UK from 16th this month. First week from Honor's web site and after that several other partners... 1399 GBP but you can get a 200 GBP discount if you register on the site. Also, there will be some free gifts...
I received mine and I regret buying it...No VOLTE OR WIFI CALLING

I finally had time to tinker a little bit with the phone and I did get a VoLTE option on my second SIM until I Emable the dual 5G option and then it goes away. If I disable dual 5G, it comes back. I guess it is operator dependent option as with my Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 I did not had those options initially but after some weeks they showed up first Volte then Vowifi... I do not currently have a Vowifi option on any of the SIM cards that are in the phone but my signal has been better with this phone so might just not activate it until it is low enough...
I guess that when you are on 5G, something like VoLTE is already part of the technology?...
Forgot to mention that the two codes for Volte and VoWifi did not do anything...

Both VoLTE and VoWiFi are operator and phone model dependent.
The phone definitely supports them but since my operator does not have the model added to the supported list for those functions, the options do not appear. My second SIM is on an operator that probably recognizes the phone as I do have the VoLTE option when the network selection is set to 4G/3G/2G/Auto. When I switch to 5G/4G/3G/2G/Auto the option disappears...
I guess operators will need some time to add the model to their white lists...
Update!
VoLTE and VoWiFi now works.
I followed this guide: Link and it worked fine after reboot. At least VoWiFi works now for sure and according to the app, VoLTE is also enabled. I also have the WiFi Calling option in settings.

Hey there is no option in settings. Its automatic based on gsma database settings. So if your network is submitting volte and vowifi to the gsma you will have no issues. Mine is automatically enabled when I put the sim in
Hi
FWIW - just got my Honor Magic VS (Global) from Malaysia. Came off a FOLD 4.
1. The phone "feels" the same as Fold4 and no noticeable difference in quality - except definitely the front screen is much more useable/practical. I did actually catch myself using the front screen a lot more but though the inner screen is 'bigger' i cant say that i've noticed it.
2. Installataion/migration was as easy as Fold4. Trasnferring apps, data was easy and went without a glitch.
3. So far I've only encoutered 3 little annoyances: a) there is no app drawer. So i had to load up Nova and it isworking pretty well (slight glitch'eness but nothing a reset of the app didnt fix and b) my mobile data (australian sim) seems to drop out reasonably often. I've done resetted my apn and it seems to be working fine ... so far. c) The Fold4 allowed me to have a different homescreen configuration (apps, widgets, etc) inner vs outer screen. I dont believe that VS allowes me to do this?!
So far pretty happy - there is no doubt that fold4 software is better - but hard to articulate why ... but notwithstanding, Honor is not far behind.
Best ... .

Thanks. I can confirm this works great L. Only issue is gotta go through the same steps after restart. If someone can come up with an autostart app without root that would be awesome

I only did it once and Volte and Vowifi still work fine for me... I definitely possibly maybe rebooted my phone at least once since I installed this...

Yeah gotta start shizuku and pair wireless debugging again. Unless I'm impatient and have to wait a minute for it to autostart

As I understood it, you only do this once to enable the setting and after that, you never need to run those apps again...
And I just tested it... Shiziku... does not need to be turned on.
