[Q] International (D6603) vs T-Mobile (D6616) pros/cons - Xperia Z3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

For those of us who will be using T-Mobile as our carrier and are considering buying an international variant of the Z3 instead of the T-Mobile variant, what are all of the pros/cons? There's only a few that I can think of, and some important ones that we need someone to confirm if possible.
Pros:
Unlocked bootloader
Color options other than black
Cons:
No international variant with LTE Band 12 support
No VoLTE support?
No WiFi Calling support (Android 4.4.4 or Android 5.0)?
Can't use Jump! (ie. no insurance)
Although perhaps negligible, less battery life (from having more frequency support)?
16GB Internal Storage

Pretty much summed it up. The battery life difference should be negligible. T-Mobile version does have 32GB internal storage as well.

There is only one thing I cannot find any clarification on, and that's whether or not the T-Mobile version as Band 12 support. T-Mobile's site says no - Sony's site says yes. Do we know which to believe?

I would say that the T-Mobile version definitely has Band 12, but that it isn't active yet and will be turned on when the network is ready.

There's no debate on this. The T-Mobile version (D6616) has LTE Band 12. T-Mobile may simply not be listing it because they don't want to advertise a network that isn't up yet.

Thanks, glad to hear it.
After the Moto X "Pure Edition" I purchased as supposedly having Band 12 and finding out it didn't, I'm overly cautious I guess! Then again, I live in the Bay Area and I think T-mo has a lot of work to do to clear up the Band 12 licenses here unfortunately.
-Collin-

One think to mention of the international version is that it isn't carrier locked and that it is free from T-Mobile's bloatware. I also like a device without carrier's logo on it. Copper and White Z3s looks awesome. Happened the same with my first Xperia Z1, it was international version purple color when all other T-Mo customers has black Z1s.

There is something else that is unclear to me: • VoLTE support! I did see the T-Mobile's version having an option in settings>call settings: Enable VoLTE if available (check mark). So international version won't have this?

I don't know if the D6603 has the VoLTE menu ootion, however on a hardware level I believe it does.

Thanks. I was ready to buy an unlocked version, but I saw this thread, so I searched online yesterday for a good 30+ minutes, even Z3's white pages, specs, but nothing that would mention VoLTE. The interesting thing that I found is that Xperia Z3 Compact, does mention VoLTE support. I also emailed few people on youtube that had made videos about Z3, waiting on their reply.

Anyone able to confirm if T-Mobile VoLTE works on the D6603 model? Screenshot showing the HD icon?

I can confirm it does have volte. Now if we could just get root Haha!! __

I had a D6603 using it on tmobile for a good week. No Volte and no Wifi calling. Thats confirmed.

This white paper PDF from the Sony Developer World website contains charts showing the differences between all the Z3 models. It also shows LTE band 12 support in model D6616.

Load TMobile software on a D6603 Z3??
Hey everyone. I own a international Sony Xperia Z3 model D6603 and was wondering if it was possible to load US TMobile D6616 software on it in order to enable WiFi calling/texting??
Thanks for everyone's help!

I would imagine so. Just use FlashTool and XperiFirm, but be ready to roll back with the proper files in case something goes wrong. So I'm not 100% sure, but I'd imagine you can if the hardware is similar enough. Do at your own risk, though - perhaps someone who knows more than me about this could chime in.

i just put my t mobile sim in a D6603 and can make calls, but i can't get 4g, 3g or even 2g...

You likely need to add your APN. Should be plenty of info on how to do that online.

[Q] VoLTE on Unlocked (T-Mobile)

I have the Unlocked A9 and I'm using it on T-Mobile USA.
Setting--> Mobile Data--> Voice over LTE is checked.
VoLTE worked with original firmware, but with the November Security Update (639737.6), it no longer works for me. (VoLTE = calls made under 4G LTE. When I make phone calls now, it changes to 4G even though I have 4 bars 4G LTE).
Please let me know if it works for you. Thanks.
I'm still waiting for my unlocked A9 for use on T-Mobile, so I can't give you another example.
I have read that there is no such thing as 4G voice, only (4G) VoLTE. (4G = LTE = data only.) If it is 4G (i.e. data) and doesn't support VoLTE then it must be using a 2G (GSM) band for voice. If it is showing 4G when you are talking then I think it must be VoLTE. At least that is how I understand things.
I'm on the latest ota update for the unlocked version and VoLTE works fine for me. I was concerned unlocking the bootloader would change that but i just completed that and calls still go over lte
In fact I've left my phone in lte only mode for the past week

Thanks for the input. Based on our info, I'm surprised that VoLTE does not work for me. When I make a call the 4G LTE goes to 4G meaning that it's a GSM call (not through data.) (LTE Discovery confirms this, as the LTE radio shuts-off during the call.)
I might factory-reset my phone and start from the beginning. Not happy, since this is hours of work...

Could be, but I have a Samsung Avant sitting next to it, and the Avant's VoLTE works while on my A9 it does not. Speed test results are similar for the phones, so I know that the connection is good.
Just got off the phone with T-Mobile, they transferred me to HTC tech support. HTC wasn't much help (just reading from a computer screen). The tech promised that a level 2 support person would call me in the next 24-72 hours.

Thanks for all your help. When I read that you are on the latest ota update and your VoLTE works, I suspected it was my phone. Well, I factory-reset my A9 this morning, and VoLTE works now.
BTW, no call from HTC. You would think that they would be interested in helping buyers of their new flagship phone, but nothing.

I think they are buried. I have tried emailing them this week about accessories, also tried their chat support, and just nothing. And still no shipping date for my unlocked garnet of 23 Oct. I really don't think they were ready for this introduction and the demand that followed. I just hope the phone is worth it.

I like the A9 a lot. Coming from a Samsung S4, the signal strength is OK, but I am very pleased with the battery -- it last all day for me. Screen is bright, camera is good, and it has the latest Android.

XZ on Verizon?

I know this is not officially supported, but does anyone know if this will work with a Verizon SIM? I know in the past, CDMA radios were required for Calls and Texts, but with VoLTE, shouldn't CDMA be unnecessary at this point? Can someone try throwing a Verizon SIM in it and see if it will work. I'm trying to find a Note 7 replacement here. The rest of the Verizon phones SUCK.
I'm really wondering about this too. I'd jump from my S7 Edge to this if it could really work. lol
Oh yeah, if any of you Xperia XZ owners could be so helpful in using this tool from the Verizon website: https://www.verizonwireless.com/bring-your-own-device/. I think this would help see if we could use the XZ on Verizon network. If any of you guys do it, can you post screenshots (blacking out any private info if you may), I'd really appreciate it!
Verizon uses CDMA which Xperia phones so not support. They only do GSM. I suspect a Verizon sim card would not find coverage in an XZ.

But there is LTE support. If you have an XZ in your possession, can you try using the tool in the link I provided to see if it works?
To be able to use VoLTE, you will need to enable HD Voice or Advanced HD feature for your line and also the person you call has to have to same feature enabled. Both callers need to be in LTE coverage areas for VoLTE works.
So it isn't always working for you if you don't have CDMA capable phones.
Sent from my SGP771 using Tapatalk
All voice calls still go through the CDMA network UNLESS, you are on Verizon and have HD voice enabled on your phone. I
know, Verizon is still using 800 CDMA in almost every cell site. This this is so VZ customers can call other carriers..
This became very apparent a few months ago when Verizon had a CDMA network outage on the west coast and we could only call people with in Verizon that had HD Voice, no one else.
If the XZ does not support CDMA (can someone confirm?) that would mean NO "Cell Network " phone calls. Data should work fine if the XZ supports LTE 700 c, 1700 f, 1900
Kinda getting tired of this, I really wanted an S7 Active and now the XZ.
One of these days I am going to jump ship. I. just have a bit of "data coverage anxiety" is the only thing holding me back...
The reason Verizon keeps their CDMA network because they still have 3g devices which are CDMA only.

Yes but, not necessarily the reason why VZ is keeping CDMA.
3G (1900Mhz CDMA) will begin to get faced out sometime next year. This is not a secret, it's actually common knowledge. In fact, some areas already don't have 3G coverage.
(800Mhz CDMA) Voice will stay at least for 2017. This is because VZ's VoLTE aka VoIP is not quite ready to go.
Some guy already tried using a VZ SIM on a Xperia XZ, didn't work.
Search YouTube for: "Sony Xperia XZ Verizon CDMA Test"
CDMA faced out all over the world last year except VZW. Some areas do not have 3g coverage doesn't mean there is no CDMA network there. There is a lot of VZW basic (CDMA) devices in the market now.

At least he need to add APN settings for Verizon network first. It's not gonna work what so ever since unlocked phones do NOT have it.

Of course you don't however, didn't that phone connect to the network briefly at start up, did it? Also it's only video so it can't prove xz doesn't work with VZW. It's my opinion even though I'm not with VZW.

Just to be clear; that's not my video. I'm no expert either but I really don't think APN settings would cause the tower to drop connection. AFAIK APN settings are just for data and MMS services.
I understand it's not your video and you knew APN is for data and mms. However, you forgot that in mean time, most VZW devices use CDMA for voice until they introduced HD voice (VoLTE) to have both voice and data work at the same time.
So without correct APN settings, nothing is gonna work including voice for non-cdma devices.

I saw your post also on the verizon regarding the XZ working with it. That's cool man! I bought the XZ based on the LTE network which I was betting that it would work but no good. I currently have a z3v working with HD calls and stuff so that's why I believed that XZ would work.
Thank you in advance!

Very weird. Maybe ask your carrier to check provisioning for your device. What bands does your carrier use for VoLTE?
it should be supported bu carrier it self , not only the phone ! check with them !
Well after some investigating, I have an answer: Rogers only support VoLTE on Apple, LG and Samsung devices...
This is really unfortunate but it's one last thing missing from the Honor 8 to make it my daily driver. It's an excellent device and I was very impressed for the price tag, but not having wireless charging, VoLTE and 4k video made me realize how much I actually use it.

US T-Mobile VoLTE support?

Does the US version support US T-Mobile VoLTE without reflashing mixing US oem.sin into foreign firmware?
You'd need to be on US region firmware to use VoLTE. For example, I flashed my Xperia 1 (J9110) to J8170 and everything works, including VoLTE - except for the 2nd sim.
It's carrier depending. The Sony is cable.

Silly me. I didn't realize this isn't out yet. GSMArena indicated October release, and I assumed it was already out and came here.
I suppose we won't know if the Xperia 5 sold in the US (ie Amazon, BestBuy, Adorama, etc) will support VoLTE out of the box. XperiFirm shows:
J8210 (listed in GSMArena) - UK & Ireland
J9210 (listed in GSMArena) - Europe, UK, Russia, Taiwan, HK and China
J8270 (listed in GSMArena) - Not found in XperiFirm
SOV41 (not mentioned in GSMArena) - Japan
901SO (not mentioned in GSMArena) - Japan
I suppose it will support VoLTE, as I read in the past in another thread about how the international firmwares recently started including VoLTE for the US. I am still on the XZ1 Compact, so I don't have any personal experience.
EDIT: Sorry, the thing about US VoLTE support in international firmwares might have been from the Samsung threads. I've been researching the S10e and Xperia 5 as my next phone after my XZ1 Compact, that my brain is fried.

Any chance that WiFi calling works as well? I'm seriously considering this device as an upgrade from the XZ1 compact. I'm probably hoping for too much here as that would have required a certification.
Unfortunately WiFi calling is not showing up for me on T-Mobile US. I can't remember the last time this was an issue. I'll call them later today to see whether the plan on whitelisting the Xperia 5 for WiFi calling.
I also can't tell if we're actually using VoLTE or not. The option is there in setting and LTE stays connected during a call, but I'm not certain whether the call is actually connecting nicer LTE.

I just made a call and watched the app. Unfortunately I remained on Band 4 during the call. Sounds like this means the call was not using VoLTE. Very disappointing.
Just received a call and there phone app said the call was over WiFi. That setting is nowhere to be found so that's interesting.
The person on the other end did confirm a echo on speaker phone, though. Not sure how to get rid of that.

Thank you. That's an interesting find. Also, I wouldn't expect the phone to switch during a call from band 4 to band 12. The only way to see would be to find a spot where you're on band 12 and see if it switches away during a call. It should stay on the strongest signal band.

Ah, I misunderstood your point about band 12 originally, apologies. I received calls yesterday and today and the Phone app says "calling over data," so I guess that is how they're saying VoLTE. I swear the terminology shown for both VoWiFi and VoLTE was different on my OnePlus 7 Pro.
In summary, for those skipping to the end, VoWiFi and VoLTE seem to work (on T-Mobile USA) even though it's not obvious.

VoLTE is available and works
I do not think WIFI calling is enabled/allowed on this phone.
I could not find wifi calling settings to enable/disable on the phone, so i did some tests to check if it works:
1. When I call within a WIFI network and TMobile off, the calls wont go through.
2. Also, when everything is on and I am connected on WIFI but very poor TMobile connection, I do not see WIFI calling

2. Also, when everything is on and I am connected on WIFI but very poor TMobile connection, I do not see WIFI calling

There is indeed no option to enable this but WiFi calling does work on T-Mobile USA.
I bought the phone last week. I compared the bands and connectivity with my XZ1 Compact. It definitely has VoLTE including band 12, but unfortunately it does not have any working WiFi calling on Tmo. No option and it doesn't make calls or texts on WiFi only connections.
I will say that it does seem to have a slightly better signal strength than my XZ1 Compact had.
Bump for any updates?
I get calls in lte mode so yeah I'd say USA volte works

Question TMobile (USA) network speed

I don't see 5G icon. But we got LTE+ on TMobile (usa) (VoLTE pre activated)
Download speed is fantastic. Upload is not

It is at the standard of the H.W not the S.W.
The same questions were asked of the 10 ultra. Some said hard, some software but no one posted any success in opening more bands.

Reasonable question man, those replies suck. It has the same modem as the iPhone 13, it's a Snapdragon X65 5G so technically you should be able to. If not in NV, you could in software programming tool of Qualcomm, might have to be the newest software though. If you could identify the modem chip number in a teardown video possibly we could find the product model number and see if it's a hardware limited or base chip limited by firmware.
That makes sense. Back in the day, I had a Zuk Z2 Pro and it worked but haven't had a phone with a snapdragon since.
Thanks Jdorman12 for replying with actual words, not a single emoji
If I end up getting a 12S, I will give it a try
