So I have my phone with rogers and my data plan is just the regular speed i guess and not LTE (around 10 down, 3 up)
I wanted to know if I need to choose GSM/HSPA or GSM/HSPA/LTE in Network Mode. Or it doesn't matter? I don't know if the LTE radio stays on even if the network is not available and if I could save battery by going with GSM/HSPA. I get the same speeds in both modes so thats why I know I don't have the LTE plan.
ALso does anyone know how I could get LTE speeds with Rogers? I currently have the 6 gig, $30 plan.
You should choose the lte one. And the radio stays on even when your not in an lte area. Are you sure your in an lte coverage area?
when i suing LTE, my speed is still very slow, only about 500kb/s download, not much faster that HSPA..
You need an lte specific data plan. If not you will only get 4g. Does you icon say lte or 4g? When i got it it was 4g (had a regular non lte option with my nexus s) then I swapped it and it changed to lte. Now I average 30mbs down and 15 up.

First, are you on a custom rom? Second, add a new APN for HSPA+ only. Third, switch the network mode to GSM/HSPA only. Lastly, place a call to any number to lock in 4G.
All this can be found in the thread, "Throttle... solved." in the General Section.
depends where you live dude, LTE is only in Ottawa, Toronto, Calgary, but soon will be most other places. I am waiting for LTE in Victoria, should be end of Jan. did you buy, or get the LTE Sim card?

According to Roger's coverage map Brampton does have LTE coverage.
Do you have a LTE sim already? If so, just call into Rogers and ask to be switched to the 6gb LTE plan. You might have to resign another 3 yrs data contract tho.. I had to when I switched from the regular 6gb plan to the LTE plan. Some reps might deny this plan existing.. but it is out there.

All you need is a Lte similar card you shouldn't have to pay more or renew your contact just let them know you have a Lte device and the aim cars your 30 $ 6gb plan should work with LTE

ditto... talk to customer relations... option 4.. option 5...option 1.. (cancelling a wireless service).
just tell them u want the 6GB LTE plan... i had a 1gb regular plan and they upgraded me to the 6gb LTE at no cost..
also got a LTE sim card with my phone (which was also sent from customer relations).
I get around 30-35 down and 15-20 up..
but i actually live in Toronto .. not the GTA

So your saying that people can get an extra 5GB for free? If so I'm def going to do that but I doubt Rogers would do that, please confirm what you are paying for data

I got my nexus Today and as soon as I popped in my Sim card, I noticed I was already receiving LTE signal , I didn't notice any speed bumps , just on my notification bar I noticed the LTE icon , so my question is am I really getting LTE reception without paying extra ? Maybe I'll take advantage of the LTE signal where 3.5g was weak , I'm on T-Mobile Germany and they do have LTE
I don't know I'd I should just call them or if its not legal :/

I think its just connecting you to the LTE as the network is available but you . But you wont get any benefit from it as in speed as you havent updated to LTE from your carrier .

So basically i'm receiving LTE but with my regular 3.5g speed, right? It's not that bad actually, if it's true that LTE signals penetrates in places where 3g doesn't, then looks like it's a win win-win situation for me :silly:
Base on the LTE network chart, T-Mobile in Germany use LTE band 3 and 20 which the international Nexus 5 support. It depends on your carrier plans. In USA, there isn't an LTE tier with T-Mobile, its included by default with regular data plans.
Sort answer is yes, if you're getting data and you see the LTE icon, you're getting LTE.

LTE is already the fastest data delivery method from T-Mobile and if you already have it, I don't know of any faster speed plan. You could upgrade to one that give higher data cap or unlimited data.

3.5G doesn't mean anything but just to categorize. It means HSPA+. But you should check with T-Mobile if your current plan have LTE. As far as I know you in the US you get LTE with T-Mobile if you have a data plan.

man, i grepped a whole thread in relation to this very issue, it's a very imformitave read on LTE network overlays on legacy & upgrading cellular & the intro to these single chip, single pathed qualcomm snapdrgon families, but it got closed;
the nexus 5 only has one chip to handle all networking, from wifi, voice calls, to bluetooth;
it's doing quadruple duty, a question, what technology are you using, gsm, or cdma?
~edit~
nevermind it, you mentioned hspa, so it is gsm..
i'm reading up on lte to gsm handover right now.. lol

that's what i'd like to know.. lol
necro'd as in meaning; left'd to wither inthe wind, or because it's 5 months old, it's not worth posting to anymore..
that's why i asked if the issue was solved, there's threads, & posted STILL asking about LTE faulty connections scattered all over the place, so i guess the issue isn't solved in relation to this handset..
i'm in the school of thought, that like a car, or any tool one would use, it's best to grasp a critical understanding of what it's being used ON..
(am i wrong in this assessment?)
from there, once you understand the build of your tool, you compare it what it's being used on, with it's pros & cons; heighten it's pros, lessen it's cons..
wen i went to mexico just two weeks ago, i ordered two telcel prepaid sim cards to use for that 5 day stretch, i noticed i only got version 5 sim cards that didn't do lte that telcel provided, i called back & asked why, & was told that yes, telcel DID provide lte, but not in the area i was visiting, the highest i would get was hspa+, & only in mexico city & within cancun proper would lte be utilied..
knowing this, & knowing i would be off the beaten path on the beach & not in the major city, i opted for the cards sent, settling for the highest hpsa+ speeds..
maybe not all of us, but many of us, purchase our vehicles (& phones) based on critical knowledge of the phone & network in unison, **if we want more utilization from our hansets**

hey, are you on tmobile?
if so, tmobile's roaming is set within it's sim, *unless you manually select a particular nework*
"The device detects and registers on wireless networks inside T-Mobile’s calling area, but roaming networks are usually restricted to T-Mobile SIM cards. You can manually select a network only in areas where T-Mobile does not own GSM spectrum." - ~attachment~
our nexus 5s use single chip, single pathed radios, only one path is used at one time, right?
on the network side, things can be set up pretty differently -
3.3 SUBSCRIBER DATA ASPECTS: USIM/ISIM
Coexistence of LTE with WCDMA/HSPA and GSM Network requires a smooth transition of home location
register HLR towards HSS based on 3GPP specifications. This also helps in providing next generation
Data Layered Architecture that addresses operator’s needs regarding centralization of subscriber data
used for authentication across multiple layers of the same session.
The SIM/USIM is the security token in 2G/3G networks for authenticating a subscriber in the operator’s
HLR. The USIM will continue to provide user authentication function at the access level to the LTE
network.
However, it is necessary to define a mechanism for service level authentication as well, for services such
as the IMS. The ISIM (an application on the UICC) is defined to hold both the user’s access level
credentials and the IMS Private User Identity that is stored in the HSS. The ISIM enables the user to
authenticate to the LTE operator’s IMS network and access its services.
3.4 ROAMING SCENARIOS
There are two roaming scenarios based on home tunneling compared to home tunneling with the
possibility of local breakout as shown in Figure 9. The 2G/3G networks refer to legacy CS or PC based
accesses like GSM/WCDMA in the network
http://www.4gamericas.org/documents/4G_Americas_Coexistence_of_GSM_HSPA_LTE_May%202011x.pdf
to set up domestic roaming on this type of handset ACTUALLY make you roam moreso on other US networks, even though the sim card is provisioned with what network is OK'd?
we're not talking from an older, dual pathed chip paradigm, when that meant exactly *that*..
these newer phones are different beasts..

LTE has an all IP backbone, with no circuit switching mechanism, the network would provide that, & from my understanding from reading up on it, wcdma provides the **IP flattening** for voice on the gsm networks, just as ehrpd does for cdma networks..
what would happen if you switch on domestic roaming in -
APN & data settings
To set the Access Point Name (APN) and turn on data settings, follow these steps:
1.From any Home screen, tap the All appsAll Apps.pngicon.
2.Tap Settings.
3.Under 'WIRELESS & NETWORKS," tap More... to display more options.
4.Tap Mobile networks.
5.Check the Data enabled check box.
6.Check the Data roaming check box to receive data when roaming domestically
7.Uncheck the Data roaming check box when roaming internationally to avoid incurring roaming charges.
8.Tap Access Point Names
9.Choose from the following:•MetroPCS - fast.metropcs.com
•T-Mobile GPRS
•T-Mobile GPRS - fast.t-mobile.com
do you think you'd simply, roam on another provider?
i suspect it would aid your phone in it's LTE to GSM voice handling..
i suspect strongly.. setting it to *LTE* in -
Switch 2G / 4G / LTE
To change the band between 2G, 4G, and LTE, follow these steps:
1.From any Home screen, tap the All appsAll Apps.pngicon.
2.Tap Settings.
3.Under 'WIRELESS & NETWORKS," tap More... to display more options.
4.Tap Mobile networks.
5.Tap Preferred Network Selection.
6.Choose from the following:•LTE
•3G
•2G
..........................
on yet another note,, your handset may be functioning more properly than you could imagine; in your OP
"on the device the preferred network type is LTE but most of the time it falls back to HSPA mode and not LTE how do you force the LTE mode only? My location get's 3-4 bars for LTE coverage and all 5 bars for HSPA but LTE is faster"
tmobile's LTE may simply be having issues for a spell, to be worked out at a later date, & you're falling back on hspa+ asa failsafe..
you may not have to change a darn thing..
In the Palo Alto area LTE doesn't always stay on and the HSPA+ does not actually transfer any data. Sometimes hspa+ is on when weak LTE is available. In situations where I want wreak LTE over strong but useless hspa+ I need to force LTE not just prefer it

Besides T Mobile and their unlimited 2g / edge options after your 4G LTE data package, what other options are there 4 more value when it comes to getting data? What data SIMs or phone SIMs are you trying? someone in another thread mentioned that they were successfully able to use a tmobile phone sim as T Mobile's customer service apparently recognizes the LTE version of the shield tablet as a phone and not a tablet. I know currently no T Mobile cell phone plans offer unlimited data unless you go through their friend referral program and even then you have to be porting in a new number to get the 4G LTE unlimited for 1 year i believe. It really is too bad they didn't allow this tablet to support bands 25 26 and 41 otherwise I would be golden on Sprint lol. EDIT: I guess there is an $80 unlimited 4G LTE phone plan available but I don't know if its compatible with this tablet.
In what can only be seen as an amazing cash grab, WIND has rebranded itself as "Freedom Mobile" (HA!). This is in line with their LTE rollout starting November 27th.
Here's the coverage map - https://www.freedommobile.ca/network-and-coverage/lte
So you've got a V20 and ready to rock that sweet new band and get real LTE Speeds on Freedom Mobile? Well you best get on their new plan.
LTE Plan Details:
$45 a month ($5 off for 1 year)
3GB of Data (Double data for 1 year, so 6GB total)
Unlimited CAN/US Calling
Unlimited Global Text
Voicemail+
So if you're using WIND and want to take advantage of their LTE capabilities, you've gotta jump off your plan and go on this one... and also be living in Vancouver or Toronto.
So F*** you, I guess?
Thanks for sharing.

Got a V20 here in Toronto, with LTE plan, been one firmware update, no LTE even in the downtown core and in 'Settings' 'Mobile Network' there is no LTE options available, only GSM/WCDMA. They say it'll be added in a firmware update though.
And since I got on the Toronto LTE network when my data is over 6GB the network slows to a crawl, Google play apps take an hour to download, then won't install, web pages won't load, streaming music won't work even on lowest settings, it's horrible. :crying:
On my Nexus 6 on regular network Google Play apps took maybe ten minutes to download even when over my bandwidth limit and all of the above worked.
Anyone else having this issue on the LTE network in Toronto? I need to know because if it's the phone I want them to replace it, I only got it last weekend.
I called the store, they say they have issues with the network they are fixing. But I still wonder if it's an issue with the phone.
Edit: Good news!! Was having battery drain trouble, pulled the battery with phone on, waited a minute, put it back in and not only is battery trouble solved send to have fixed my network issues!!

The network isn't actually live yet, so LTE doesn't work. Will probably be a week or two, considering they want to launch it by Christmas.
You can manually connect to any LTE band using the Modem menu by dialing *#546368#*915#
The above is how you can connect internationally.
My phone is unlocked and running on public mobile, so I don't have any issues with LTE.

Freedom Mobile uses the AWS band. I've done the *#546368#*915#, AWS is only option that that works with Freedom Mobile right now. The AWS band currently has no option for LTE, in 'Settings' 'Mobile Network' or in the Hidden Menu. the LTE options in the Hidden Menu don't work, probably because Freedom Mobile uses band 66, which is an AWS band. LTE options on this phone go from bands 1 to 20 , not band 66.
LTE will be enabled on Freedom Mobile phones in a future firmware update.
Edit: And only two Freedom mobile branded phones will do the LTE on band 66, any other phone, like a Pixel XL or anything will only work as 4G, only these two phones support band 66.

No, the network is live, but on V20s only 4G is working, not LTE. A tech from Freedom Mobile confirmed this, that LTE will be enabled in a firmware update before Xmas on the V20.
i hope this doesn't post twice, XDA has been really buggy for me lately.
The only two phones that will support LTE band 66 are the two current Freedom Mobile phones. Any other phone like the Pixel XL do not support the band and will only get 4G.
unless people can confirm that LTE works, I'm not very eager to switch from my sweet "Holiday Miracle" plan to the new LTE plan.
and I have a hunch this is more than likely just a cash grab, I'm sure if I buy the V20 out right and stick my existing "Holiday Miracle" plan, I'll still get LTE with a SIM card change.
