Getting LTE without upgrading my data plan? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got my nexus Today and as soon as I popped in my Sim card, I noticed I was already receiving LTE signal , I didn't notice any speed bumps , just on my notification bar I noticed the LTE icon , so my question is am I really getting LTE reception without paying extra ? Maybe I'll take advantage of the LTE signal where 3.5g was weak , I'm on T-Mobile Germany and they do have LTE
I don't know I'd I should just call them or if its not legal :/

Anyone?

I think its just connecting you to the LTE as the network is available but you . But you wont get any benefit from it as in speed as you havent updated to LTE from your carrier .

So basically i'm receiving LTE but with my regular 3.5g speed, right? It's not that bad actually, if it's true that LTE signals penetrates in places where 3g doesn't, then looks like it's a win win-win situation for me :silly:

Base on the LTE network chart, T-Mobile in Germany use LTE band 3 and 20 which the international Nexus 5 support. It depends on your carrier plans. In USA, there isn't an LTE tier with T-Mobile, its included by default with regular data plans.
Sort answer is yes, if you're getting data and you see the LTE icon, you're getting LTE.

LTE is already the fastest data delivery method from T-Mobile and if you already have it, I don't know of any faster speed plan. You could upgrade to one that give higher data cap or unlimited data.

I currently have a 3.5g plan with 21 mbps , the LTE plans have 50 mpbs and 100 mpbs speed caps , I believe on Germany there's not a single company that offers unlimited data, but I don't really need it neither

3.5G doesn't mean anything but just to categorize. It means HSPA+. But you should check with T-Mobile if your current plan have LTE. As far as I know you in the US you get LTE with T-Mobile if you have a data plan.

[Q] GSM/HSPA or GSM/HSPA/LTE?

So I have my phone with rogers and my data plan is just the regular speed i guess and not LTE (around 10 down, 3 up)
I wanted to know if I need to choose GSM/HSPA or GSM/HSPA/LTE in Network Mode. Or it doesn't matter? I don't know if the LTE radio stays on even if the network is not available and if I could save battery by going with GSM/HSPA. I get the same speeds in both modes so thats why I know I don't have the LTE plan.
ALso does anyone know how I could get LTE speeds with Rogers? I currently have the 6 gig, $30 plan.
You should choose the lte one. And the radio stays on even when your not in an lte area. Are you sure your in an lte coverage area?
when i suing LTE, my speed is still very slow, only about 500kb/s download, not much faster that HSPA..
You need an lte specific data plan. If not you will only get 4g. Does you icon say lte or 4g? When i got it it was 4g (had a regular non lte option with my nexus s) then I swapped it and it changed to lte. Now I average 30mbs down and 15 up.

First, are you on a custom rom? Second, add a new APN for HSPA+ only. Third, switch the network mode to GSM/HSPA only. Lastly, place a call to any number to lock in 4G.
All this can be found in the thread, "Throttle... solved." in the General Section.
depends where you live dude, LTE is only in Ottawa, Toronto, Calgary, but soon will be most other places. I am waiting for LTE in Victoria, should be end of Jan. did you buy, or get the LTE Sim card?

According to Roger's coverage map Brampton does have LTE coverage.
Do you have a LTE sim already? If so, just call into Rogers and ask to be switched to the 6gb LTE plan. You might have to resign another 3 yrs data contract tho.. I had to when I switched from the regular 6gb plan to the LTE plan. Some reps might deny this plan existing.. but it is out there.

How to utilize 3G bands and not 4G....

Is there a way we can disable the 4G connection and only use 3G? Any help that you guys can as provide will be greatly appreciated!

4G LTE = LTE (our phone doesn't support it)
4G = 3G + extra stuff to be better... but still techically 4G as it's AT&T's 4th generation of technology
3G = 3G
But I don't think that there's a way you can disable "4G" and only use 3G... you can disable 3G/4G and only use 2G though.
ATRIX 2 supports 21mbit hspa+ that's what they call 4G. 3g is really just slower versions of hspa+ for us. Post above is correct about LTE. LTE is better than hspa+ also.

my wifes iphone 4 must suck then.
hers is a "3g" and gets about 1.25 mbps
my atrix 2 4G gets 4.45 mbps
i think 4g is a bunch faster than 3g.....
or its just that the iphone a generally crap.

Well it's both really .
But our phone is about as fast as you can get on AT&T's network without using LTE. The OG Atrix also was "4G" but it was only 14.x mb/sec while our A2's radio supports up to 21.x mb/sec (or something around there). The iPhone X's only support 3G.

Not too sure what you guys are meaning when you say better....
I was interested in the differences a while back and after researching around quite a bit, found that the speeds really depended on the phone's programming more so than whether it was LTE or HSPA+.

LTE has higher bandwidth, and is less populated. HSPA+ can go up to 21mbit, yes, (which is less than LTE) BUT most AT&T HSPA+ deployments are 7mbit or 14mbit.
HSPA+ users typically see ~4-5mbit or so, maybe up to 7mbit on a 14.4mbit cell, but LTE users typically can see 9-11mbit+.
The best speedtest I have ever gotten on my phone was in the 5mbit range. SLC only has 7mbit HSPA+ from what I can tell, and since AT&T is going to LTE, it appears they wont be upgrading the HSPA+ network any more.
you're lucky. Around my area all you can get is 2-3 mbs.

Thats what I usually get too, but if I am right near a cell tower I can get the ~5mbit speeds.
Yeah, "4G" is actually HSPA+, which AT&T actually was going to call 3G+. The 4G crap came around because T-Mobile marketed it that way and if AT&T stuck with 3G+ they took the risk of people thinking T-Mobile was faster and losing customers. LTE was what they planned to call 4G.

I feel as if their labeling of 4g was a bit deceiving as well but its understandable if it was meant to keep up with TMobile because of all the confusion between 4g and 4g lte.
The good news is that I don't believe our 4g is as battery-consuming as 4g lte, its probably about the same as regular 3g.
If you're wanting to limit it to 2g though there is a way to do it even though the menu is left out from our 'Settings'. Use anycut to get to network settings directly and choose GSM only.
At least T-Mobile's HSPA+ is significantly faster than "3G" - not an entirely undeserved title for them. ATT...not so much.

That's pretty good. Max I've seen is 11mbit down.
I didn't believe it at first so I reran the speedtest a couple times to make sure.
Mine has topped out around 9Mbps, sadly.
It's not throughput that's bad on a decent 3G network, a lot of time's it's the latency. Meh. Whatever. Long live LTE.
I ran just ran the speedtest.net app and I have 7.20 mbps down and 1.13 up here in Atlanta. Thats even better than basic dsl albiet cable beats it easily....

[Q] No LTE icon? (my N5 only shows H)

Hello,
I have been using the Simple Mobile $70 plan for unlimited 4G data. Since I got my brand new Nexus 5, I was wondering why I am not getting "LTE" icon on the notification bar. It only shows H/3G which means (I think) HSPDA+. This is weird since the APN is set to T-mobile LTE (fast.t-mobile.com). Can I fix this if I change the service provider to, for example, T-mobile (assuming Simple Mobile 4G is not LTE)? I heard some people are getting LTE icon with Straight Talk and some don't.
Thanks for your advice in advance!

it depends on if u have LTE service in the area you are at. For instance, I only get 3g service at my house , but if i go a block west of my house i get LTE service. Also i have noted that the nexus 5 have weak reception, some spots i can browse and make calls with my Iphone but at the same spot nexus 5 has no service.
And dont trust the T-mobile coverage map, its a bunch of BS. There are so many areas that I know of that have no service at all of any kind and are shown as great service areas on the map. Best way to find out coverage is to just go to different places ( indoors and outdoors ) and test it out.

You should try using an att sim and see what kind of coverage you get. Att is definitely more expensive than t-mobile and you dont get unlimited data no matter what but i see no point of having and paying for a service which you can not use. Also you can ask someone else who has the nexus 5 and t-mobile how the coverage is for them in and around the areas you frequent, it might be a device issue.

My friend just told me the processor might not be compatible with the bandwidth that simple mobile uses. I also read some articles saying that LTE support is somewhat perplexing (http://www.extremetech.com/extreme/170166-nexus-5-excellent-global-coverage-perplexing-lte-support),
and that AT&T is fully compatible (http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/1...y-compatible-with-atts-lte-and-hspa-networks/). Your N5 is working fine with AT&T, right?

Nope. Simple Mobile is an MVNO that operates on T-Mobile's network. The nexus 5 supports all the bands that T-Mobile broadcasts on.
Does Simple Mobile even offer LTE? Because according their website they do not, but they offer hspa+. Which is kind of considered 4g speeds. No mention of LTE.

I dont see the connection between the processor and bandwidth. I have no idea what bands simple mobile uses but thats based on the radio of the device. As far as i know Nexus 5 supports 3g/4g(h)/LTE for tmobile and att, never used sprint so cant say.
Yes i got my phone from T-mobile and i just put my work att sim card into it, all that was needed was a reboot and it automatically picked up att service with LTE. Data speeds are great, getting 8+ Mbps with only 2 bars of service.
I do think that the nexus 5 have reception issues, the same att sim card in an htc one or iphone 5 gives minimum 4 bars but data speeds are around the same (+ 2~3 Mbps) but more consistent. With t-mobile, i was missing calls, receiving texts hours later and the phone was just hopping between LTE, H and No service.

Yes, I remember OOKLA test once peaked 14Mbps, so it's not just 3G. After some research, I found that Nexus 5 works with LTE bands 1/2/4/5/17/19/25/26/41 while T-mobile uses 4 only, Verizon uses 4/12, AT&T uses 2/4/17/29/30, and Sprint uses 25/26/41. Is it a good idea to change the provider to AT&T, or Sprint? Do they support porting in most cases? Thanks.

hspa and hspa+
hspa is 3g 850mhz 1.5mbps tops and hspa+ is "4g" 1900mhz 5-20mpbs tops which is really like a 3.9g theres a story behind this but im only answering the question which is which so pretty much this device is ready for either bands just check who's got those bands and you are ready to go ohh by the way no LTE if it isnt with verizon peace im out im batmaaaaaaaaaaaaan!
Because Verizon’s 4G LTE devices use SIM cards, that means many of them (the global-ready ones, anyway) are compatible with the regular 3G/2G GSM bands used everywhere else in the world (no LTE, however). When traveling, simply pop in a prepaid SIM card, configure the APN settings with the network you’ll be using the phone on, and boom. You’re up and running on 3G. Same goes for AT&T in the US (again, no LTE because of incompatible bands).
It does get AT&T LTE, I have a GoPhone account with AT&T and get LTE with my M8. Only in some areas, get about 70% hspa, and LTE the rest, just depends on your location and the AT&T LTE bands used in your area, but the M8 does get LTE

Attention Canadian WIND V20 Users: Do you want LTE? PAY UP.

In what can only be seen as an amazing cash grab, WIND has rebranded itself as "Freedom Mobile" (HA!). This is in line with their LTE rollout starting November 27th.
Here's the coverage map - https://www.freedommobile.ca/network-and-coverage/lte
So you've got a V20 and ready to rock that sweet new band and get real LTE Speeds on Freedom Mobile? Well you best get on their new plan.
LTE Plan Details:
$45 a month ($5 off for 1 year)
3GB of Data (Double data for 1 year, so 6GB total)
Unlimited CAN/US Calling
Unlimited Global Text

So if you're using WIND and want to take advantage of their LTE capabilities, you've gotta jump off your plan and go on this one... and also be living in Vancouver or Toronto.
So F*** you, I guess?
Thanks for sharing.
LTE Network in Toronto Really Screwed Up.

Got a V20 here in Toronto, with LTE plan, been one firmware update, no LTE even in the downtown core and in 'Settings' 'Mobile Network' there is no LTE options available, only GSM/WCDMA. They say it'll be added in a firmware update though.
And since I got on the Toronto LTE network when my data is over 6GB the network slows to a crawl, Google play apps take an hour to download, then won't install, web pages won't load, streaming music won't work even on lowest settings, it's horrible. :crying:
On my Nexus 6 on regular network Google Play apps took maybe ten minutes to download even when over my bandwidth limit and all of the above worked.
Anyone else having this issue on the LTE network in Toronto? I need to know because if it's the phone I want them to replace it, I only got it last weekend.
I called the store, they say they have issues with the network they are fixing. But I still wonder if it's an issue with the phone.
Edit: Good news!! Was having battery drain trouble, pulled the battery with phone on, waited a minute, put it back in and not only is battery trouble solved send to have fixed my network issues!!

The network isn't actually live yet, so LTE doesn't work. Will probably be a week or two, considering they want to launch it by Christmas.
You can manually connect to any LTE band using the Modem menu by dialing *#546368#*915#
The above is how you can connect internationally.
My phone is unlocked and running on public mobile, so I don't have any issues with LTE.

Freedom Mobile uses the AWS band. I've done the *#546368#*915#, AWS is only option that that works with Freedom Mobile right now. The AWS band currently has no option for LTE, in 'Settings' 'Mobile Network' or in the Hidden Menu. the LTE options in the Hidden Menu don't work, probably because Freedom Mobile uses band 66, which is an AWS band. LTE options on this phone go from bands 1 to 20 , not band 66.
LTE will be enabled on Freedom Mobile phones in a future firmware update.
Edit: And only two Freedom mobile branded phones will do the LTE on band 66, any other phone, like a Pixel XL or anything will only work as 4G, only these two phones support band 66.

Ah thanks for the clarification. According to others the network is live, but you can't connect. So presumably the only thing keeping it back is this software connection?

No, the network is live, but on V20s only 4G is working, not LTE. A tech from Freedom Mobile confirmed this, that LTE will be enabled in a firmware update before Xmas on the V20.
i hope this doesn't post twice, XDA has been really buggy for me lately.
The only two phones that will support LTE band 66 are the two current Freedom Mobile phones. Any other phone like the Pixel XL do not support the band and will only get 4G.
unless people can confirm that LTE works, I'm not very eager to switch from my sweet "Holiday Miracle" plan to the new LTE plan.
and I have a hunch this is more than likely just a cash grab, I'm sure if I buy the V20 out right and stick my existing "Holiday Miracle" plan, I'll still get LTE with a SIM card change.

Just got the update to my phone, I'll see if Band 66 is an option once it's done.
Have LTE on my Freedom Mobile V20 now with yesterday's firmware update, getting 56 mb/sec down, 36 up. Haven't accessed the Hidden Menu yet to see new options though.

I only see up to band 40 in the hidden menu, but it's great that it's working.
