What's your experience on 3rd party camera apps such as Snap Camera, A better camera, Camera Zoom FX etc. in comparison to stock google cam app? Do they perform any better in point-and-shoot scenarios? Some of these apps recently got support for camera2 API on Nexus 5. Does that actually change anything except RAW support and 4k video recording?
I use "A Better Camera", and shoot in "Super" mode. I took several pictures with the google camera in various levels of light, on normal and HDR, and took the same with A Better Camera using normal, HDR, and Super. Super looks hands down the best. When zooming the pictures in all of the way, you can easily see that A Better Camera's pictures taken as Super contain the most detail and most accurate colors. A Better Camera's HDR also beats the stock camera HDR in detail. For low light A Better Camera destroys the Google Camera.
Edit: Also, A Better Camera focuses better than the stock camera, and doesn't need to refocus every several seconds.
I do not use any post processing.

I installed it and it certainly takes a better picture, but I cannot find any "super" setting.
Where is the super setting?
You need premium
Also, do I need premium for it to zoom? I can't get it to zoom like the regular camera does.
You shouldn't need premium for the Super setting. Tap the circle at bottom right to get shooting mode settings, and Super should be the tile in the middle. For zoom, swipe down from the top to get the settings menu, tap More settings (at bottom), tap Viewfinder settings, tap More, and make sure Show zoom control is checked. Then, when you go back to the main (picture-taking) screen, swipe from left to right to bring the zoom slider out.
Thank you for the clear explanations.
I found the zoom control hidden on left. I had been trying to zoom using 2 finger stretch like in other apps but didn't work here.
But super is not there. I purchased the app but as you see in the screenshot there is no super.....
Odd... yours has Night where mine has Super (2nd screenshot). Super was there for me in the free version too.
Well, at least I'm not going blind.
I have the latest version. Just purchased it.
I thought I edited my post to say I'd figured it out, but something didn't save... anyway, if you are running Lollipop, pull down your settings menu, tap More settings, tap General Settings, tap More, then make sure Use Camera2 Interface is checked. Then you will have the Super option available. (If you're still running KitKat, that won't work since KK doesn't use the Camera2 interface.)
Thank you.
I'm still on kitkat. So no super mode. ?
Google Camera? Camera Zoom FX? The default? What's working for you?
Same question here, stock camera is okay, but is there another app that will save to SD card beside stock

I use the stock app for videos, OpenCamera for stills, Freedcam for landscapes using RAW mode , and Google Camera - if I want panorama or photo-sphere.
'A Better Camera' - will save to SD card. It is pretty nice - but I uninstalled it after I realized that the free version had a limitation of number of HDRs pictures it allows.

Using stock, OpenCamera, A BetterCamera. I like OpenCamera except it doesn't yet support writing to external SD.
My main complaint with the stock camera is that it seems to only support two resolution settings (and I am guessing they are the really the same resolution, just one is cropped to make 16:9 aspect ratio). Am I missing something? Is there a way to take lower-resolution photos (e.g. for web posting or faster email upload) using the stock camera app?
I use Camera FV-5.

Does it allow saving to the external sd on lollipop? As far as I know only the stock camera allows that.
Camera FV-5 I found does not work for some reason on the Idol. I start the camera and get a black screen. I do get the settings but nothing else but a black screen. I going to contact app developer soon about it.
The best camera so far (for any device) it's procapture because: it can silent all the sounds (except those in whats app), it can put the grip on and it can capture just by touch. Besides theese, there are many-many other settings as wb, iso, hdr, light mode etc

Your phone has to support Google's Camera2 API in order for the app to even function. Right now only a few devices even support the official Google Camera2 API. The ones I know of are: Nexus 6, Samsung Galaxy Note 4, Samsung Galaxy S6, LG G4. Since the camera hardware is the same as my Nexus 6, I'd expect this app to just work, but Alcatel's software side probably isn't even written with Camera2 API in mind.
Could anyone please post photos clicked using stock and 3rd party apps?
In some reviews it's mentioned certain manual features (like shutter speed) cannot be controlled in Moto X style/Pure. Is it true?
true for stock camera. can't adjust iso either. the camera app blows.

Moto Camera app versus Google Camera, in panorama
The first attached file, is a panorama with the Google Camera app. The second is a panorama with the Moto Camera app. With Panorama, the Moto app does not handle lightt well at all. For any indoor panorama shots, use Google Camera.
And of those two photos. I can tell you from being there. The lighting in the room is very much like is shown in the Google Camera shot.
panorama is garbage on this phone. it's such a low resolution, it's always blurry never in focus.. it's god awful.

Try it with the Google Camera app. What I have posted here, is chopped down during upload to XDA and are not the full size photos.
Thanks for all the posts!!
Could anyone pls try the manual camera app and let me know if the Raw files, ISO, Aperture control etc. are supported on Moto x Pure?
I read somewhere that the camera apk2 is not included in moto camera app and thereby limiting some of the functionalities. Thanks for the reply!
Manual camera does not work. It crashes constantly if you try to change ISO or any of the other settings. I don't understand what Moto was thinking? Surely there is a way to provide a nice point and shoot experience while also allowing advanced settings if the user is so inclined. This phone has a killer Sony Sensor and the Moto Camera app handicaps it terribly.
I installed Google camera on day one and haven't touched the Moto camera since I experienced it's awfulness.

The Moto camera app is complete trash for panoramic shots. I'm not sure what they were thinking there.
I too have experienced the crashing apps from trying to change ISO. Bummer because I love using FV-5 and it is pretty much useless on this phone.

They flat out excluded the Lollipop Camera2 API. That is why nothing works and you get the crashes. Hopefully someone smarter than I can bake it into a custom rom soon.
Motorola excluded the camera2api for some dumb ass reason. No manual controls at all.
I use the Google Camera app, overall I get better results than the Moto crap app.

This is getting depressing. With things like this and the non-enhanced dialer. This is not the "pure" Android experience I was looking for. It at least this is resolved by using Google Camera. Google does not have a separate enhanced dialer app.

Open camera can record in UHD 3840 x 2160
I use open camera but with no stabilization I don't even really bother taking photos at all. Especially since even using flash produces blurry photos with the slightest subject movement. I've been very disappointed with the quality in that department. If your taking a still and nothing is moving even the slightest then the image is good.

You are saying that when you check the auto-stabilize option, it doesn't work for you?
To those that use Open Camera, does the stock gallery display the pictures taken? Seems that with the stock Moto camera, Google camera, and Camera MX, pictures taken by any of them show up in the gallery. Pictures taken with Open Camera? Nope :\

The pictures on my phone showed up under the albums tab, in a folder called OpenCamera on the stock gallery.
I wish OpenCamera had and option to save to the external sdcard though.

Hmm.. seems that I fixed my own issue. Under Options > More camera controls, if you have Use Storage Access Framework checked, it seems it wasn't having my photos appear in the gallery. With it unchecked, photos I now take are. Don't know the cause of that.
Right above that option is the Save location, where you can have the photos saved to the external sdcard :good:
Whenever I try to share pictures clicked with my either of cameras, the photo is processed in the gallery automatically.
When we take a screencap of the photo and the actual photo when shared via any app, One can tell there is noticable difference between two of the photos.
There is some processing with the photos you can witness as soon as you touch the share button.
In my opinion it sort of works like HDR. You can notice the colors are more vibrant when the photo is shared but you cant have that with every picture. Face looks reddish in selfies..
This happens irrespective of the HDR is on or off.

go Settings>Display>Screen mode then switch to AMOLED Cinema. Samsung's adaptive display feature adapts screen sharpness and contrast based on app
I have a few questions as I am considering upgrading from Z5 to XZ Premium.
1. Is 4K mode still distinct from other video modes? I recall reading somewhere that the XZ1 has 4k mode part of the canera app now but not sure if it was XZ1 or XZP. Also, are you able to tap and lock focus in 4K or any other mode? On the Z5, I can't tap-focus in 4K mode
2. Can video white balance be made constant? I've seen many videos of the XZ Premium and XZ1 where the white balance shifts in tone when the camera pans in different lighting conditions. The Z5 has this same problem and you can only adjust the colour tint but it will still automatically shift around. This is extremely annoying of you want to take serious video since white balance should not be set "auto", and other Android smartphones are able to have a constant white balance seting. I am only able to change video white balance in the 4K app. If not, is there a third-party app that is able to do this?
3. How reliable is the predictive burst capture of the XZP? Is there times when it does not trigger properly? From what I've read there's still no real burst mode on the XZP but hopefully Android Oreo will bring the XZ1's new burst function to the XZP. However I'm not banking on it because of how Sony treated the Z5 series (practically no updates to the camera despite software updates to 6.0, 7.0, 7.1 etc.)
4. Does touch capture focus on the tapped spot before it captures the image? After updating to 7.0 on the Z5 they made it so that touch capture just triggers the middle part of the image to be focused!
predictive capture is close to worthless on the xz p since its auto only. I can rarely get it to trigger when I want (trying to take pictures of kids).
4k mode is separate from the standard video mode on it.
Touch capture is focusing and then taking a photo where it is touched.
will have to look into the white balance
Are you able to touch focus or manual focus in video? It is frustrating that the camera hunts focus when filming something like fireworks, when other cameras have manual focus for video.
in 1080p it appears to track focus on what you tap, in 4k it is doing nothing when tapping.
well that's really disappointing. Did you take a look at the white balance settings for video yet?
There is no white balance settings in 1080p video, only in 4K.
Mine is doing great specially in capturing moving subjects no blur at all.

thanks, now that's really disappointing. For the XZ1 they are merging the 4K modes but I'm concerned that means they will take away white balance altogether. Is there any third-party app that allows for manual white balance of video?
