"Sandisk Extreme Pro" for using as RAM on XT1540 - Moto G 2015 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have the Moto G3 XT1540 which comes with 1GB RAM. So I want to buy a micro sd card to use as RAM, and in second place to storage some files.
The micro sd that I ask you to buy is "Sandisk Extreme Pro - Class 10 u3 - SDHC - 32GB - UHS-I - Read Speed: up to 95 MB/s - Write speed: up to 90 MB/s"
So the questions are:
Is a really good choice this micro sd card for this phone?
If I use part of this micro sd card as RAM memory, Will i feel a really positive difference on performance?
Thank you very much.

That's called swap partition, it would be terribly slow compared to ram.

Do you mean RAM (which is not expandable) or storage space?
If RAM, you will be sorely disappointed... There is no way to expand the ram of the device, although if rooted you may be able to add some as swap space manually, but the speed of the SD card is significantly slower than than RAM and could actually hamper overall performance.
If storage, the card is more than sufficient for either adopted (internal) or portable (external) storage... If you chose to use it as adopted storage, remember that this puts significant stress on the card and backups of all data should maintained regularly. We have seen adopted storage cause even high quality cards to fail in a very short time (months) or last for quite a while. Most quality cards are warrantied for life, but that doesn't recovery any data.

Is for use as RAM adding a SWAP partition. Thank you for the answer.

SD Card capacity

I've read 2 different things about how much memory the Captivate will see. Does anyone know for sure if it's 48 or 32 gigs?
I put my 32Gb Sandisk in my Captivate today...and it mounted ok, all 21Gb of installed music and movies on that card seemed to work fine, based on my random sampling.
Keep in mind that it makes a "fake" /sd directory in the root of the internal /sdcard, and that points to the external storage when using an Android file explorer like Astro. And also keep in mind that there's a lot of apps that just don't know about this directory, so they can't "see" the external storage.
Windows sees two distinct storage devices, however, as it should be.
It has build in internal 16GB (2GB of that is reserved for apps) rest 14GB is data for whatever, Plus whatever Micro SDHC card you will add.
16+16 SD = 32GB
16+32 SD = 48GB
I have put 16GB micro SDHC to it (32GB cards are to expensive) connected to windows i get two drive letters one for Internal 14GB Data partition and one for my own 16GB card.
Hope that helped you.

Yep the ATT site spec sheet says 32gb is supported by the phone. And from all appearances it does indeed seem to work with the phone just fine.
Now the real question. Who is going to tear apart the phone and replace the internal SD card (since I assume it's literally an internal microSD card as seen in other devices) with a 32 GB card and see if it can handle 32+32 GB.

you seem like a willing volunteer
hmm if only i had two 32gb sd cards i would but they expensive
The real reason for replacing the internal SD card would be because it's so damn slow.
I agree with the slow part hence the mods to change the cache onto the external which speed up the phones.... any word on if the internal SD card is replaceable or not? If it is, that would be great news as its definately not as fast as a class 6 card and replacing it with one would definately speed things up.

Haha, exactly that. If I had the money for two 32 GB cards I'd try.
Edit Hmm... I saw a tear down of the Galaxy S and I didn't see an internal microSD card, so maybe it doesn't use a card like the Streak. Might be built in and unable to swap. Oh well!

[Q] increasing external memory

hi.. i currently have a 2GB sd card, which im assuming is class 2 since it came with the phone. 2gb is less for me so im going to buy atleast a 4gb preferably class 4 (since its known to perform faster). my phone has an internal memory of 320 mb storage and 512 mb RAM.
i was wondering if increasing external storage with a higher class will make my phone faster? also, how about gaming experience since i have games on my sd card
PS. my phone is NOT rooted
thanks
I guess the only noticeable performance boost would be for things you do on the external sd card like reading/writing on it. Also I think apps that you'll move to it might start up faster.
I doubt that it will make the phone faster overall, because when starting an app, once it's read from the SD/ext SD card, it's all up to the CPU and RAM to do the work (also GPU if it's a game), and those are still the same.

[Q] Is 16 GB enough

Hey guys,
was wondering what you all think about 16GB as internal space being enough or not? The problem that I'm thinking of is that "/sdcard" will get mapped to the internal memory (and not the external SD Card), and a lot of apps just go there to write stuff. Things like downloads folder etc., which default to /sdcard/download and may fill up the 16GB partition very soon.
What are your experiences in this direction?
thanks
Personaly for me its far too litle ,cuz i have got a lot of differents app ,also 4K video and timeshift video eat unimaginable amount of space
I believe Lollipop will allow you to save app data to an external storage.
Well there's at least a decent amount of onboard memory. I got by with a 32gb card for the past 3 years. Just noe upgraded to 64gb heading into my Z3v. I really only use it for old pics (from phone to phone) and keeping my entire music library on me at all times, which is like 12 gbs.
It's nice to know I'll never be worrying for space.

Even then, the difference of write/read speeds is massive between internal memory vs external SD card. I believe 32 GB should be the bare minimum for today's smartphones. Glad T Mobile thought so as well, at least for the Z3.

If you get a good card like the Samsung Pro or SandDisk Extreme you won't notice much difference (40-50 MB/s Writes). The internal flash (made by Samsung) is obviously faster due being soldered and more inter connects (like RAID).
Cheap cards like the Sandisk Ultra are slow.... (10-15MB/s Writes)

The internal memory is like 200+ MB/s, so there is still a BIG difference. Also, I don't believe the memory controller can read the full potential of the Pro and Extreme cards. I have a 64 GB Ultra (advertised at 48 MB/s read), and I only get about 39 MB/s read. I have read the same for the Note 4 in that it cannot use the full speed available from those cards.

True on both points, the card controller max is like 40-50MB/s. What I meant was I don't think you will notice much difference because, for most apps it should be fast enough and caching is still generally in the internal card. Loading big games like Asphalt may load a little slower but in use, it should not be too bad. Internal is ~240/40(R/W) Max for the klmag2geac-b001 (16GB) and 240/60 (R/W) for the 32 GB version in the D6616.
The reads are not the problem as most ops are reads anyway, but its the writes which are really low ~15 MB/s max, hence the cost of the Extreme/PRO 35-40 MB/s.
Basically what I am saying is you are right but this is your best bet.
Here is the specifications for the internal NAND if you are interested:

How much free space (% or MB/GB) should there be on a phone

I've read in several places, especially for microsd cards, that you should never fill them up all the way, there should always be some free space otherwise the system can slow down significantly.
My two questions are:
1 How much free space should there be on a microsd card inside my phone (s7 at the moment with a 128GB class 10 card)...and is it a specific amount of space, like 500MB or 1GB, or is it a certain % should remain free.
2 Does this apply to internal storage as well?
This question is really Manufacturer depending. The manufacturers don't want you to know(have no idea why), but on my Lenovo phone, I have 8GB of internal storage, and if there is less than 550MB, my phone goes in low storage mode(no downloads and SMS and stuff). About microSD cards on the other hand, I don't think there is any limitations. If you use swap memory, you should let twice as much space as the swap is big free on microSD card.

64 gb Memory card

I'm planning to buy a 64GB memory card for HTC A9 and bind it as its internal memory. Could you guys suggest on this?
1. If anyone is using 64GB card, can you advise what are the specs I need to look it? I have read couple of reviews and seems "SAMAUNG -EVO + and SAMSUNG -EVO-" to be good. Any further suggestions?
2. Is it ok to bind the 64 memory as internal memory and does it work without any problems?

FYI, using a PNY U3 Pro Elite card without any issues. It's one of the fastest out there for the money. I did not bind it as internal memory though, and just use it as a secondary storage just in case (that way I can always remove it and still access thru a card reader on computer).
if you are looking to format as Internal Memory; UHS II, Speed Class 10
otherwise; UHS I, Speed Class 10

Thanks for the info !!
I had loads of problems with this (gone through 3 super fast SD cards... with each install the software would say it was not fast enough. Just ignore it ... the software lies). For almost a year it worked fine and then I ran out of memory space for apps, and I had to constantly delete apps to make room for updates. Finally I was forced to do a factory reset. Setting the SD memory card up after a factory reset means that you can create extended memory from scratch and allows you to put all the apps where the developer has given permission to run from the SD card onto the extended memory. After factory reset and going through and moving apps to extended memory everything has worked great.
I'm using "SanDisk Extreme PLUS 64 GB microSDXC" formated as internal Storage.
No Problems so far
