Is there any way to skip the update during setup? I need DePixel8 to work and my verizon pixel comes after december 7th (i think thats when the next security patch comes out). Can you use adb in recovery? that might work.

You sure about that? I thought you needed to adb depixel8 and if so, then how can you get the phone recognized in order to issue adb commands without logging in? To wit, usb debugging in developer options. Now I do suppose you can deny the update but I'm not even sure about that. Doesn't it automatically download and install before you can do anything?
I'm guessing the point is moot because the December update will not block depixel8? We'll know tomorrow.

It has been discussed in the Pixel XL unlock thread. Here is one (well, two really) example. See the last paragraph of the quoted post, and the post itself where the poster states it worked: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=69431522&postcount=1043
You don't need to log in to boot the phone.
There are other statements in that long thread where people say they have done this, if you choose to find them. I have not done it myself, so I am just going by what others have said.

Wow what a crazy thread, thanks for keeping me busy for the last 2 hours reading it. December update is out now and Depixel8 is now patched and does not work any longer. I'm still reading that thread and getting conflicting information as to what will happen upon booting either with or without the sim in. I'll come back if I find out anything definitive. I might head over to IRC and ask directly. (doing that now, let's see if anyone answers freenode #googlepixel)
edit: I do believe you can bypass the setup without a sim or wifi. So back to the OP question, I'm not sure when the vzw version will start shipping with 7.1.1 but if you get it with the older patch and you want to unlock you better be careful and get it done right away.

Yeah, JCase is/was very active for a while. Has degraded into the same questions over and over at this point though. I love when a mod comes in and has to clean the thread. Tells me I missed some fireworks. At this point those that don't have the device (Verizon) are starting to freak a little with the Dec update out now. But really if they are that concerned just buy a Google variety and you can always unlock that. I do realize that some people have upgrades etc. and as for me, I paid $240 on the Black Friday deal so I'm stuck. Well not really, but I'm not unlocking so I really don't care what they do with the bootloader.
I presume someone will start a thread about the update, but I haven't received it yet. I downloaded the full ota image but I'll hold off for a few more hours.

Yeah, I got mine on BF, too. But I did go ahead and unlock the BL, after I confirmed the phone worked as expected. I have not changed the recovery or rooted at this point. Just running stock/unlocked for now. I believe that I should still get the OTA, since I'm not rooted and haven't changed recoveries, but we'll see. No sign of it yet.
Booting to twrp and starting a side load will get adb working. Had to do this just the other day to push a file.

How? I'm going to get a replacement pixel tomorrow. I did a few factory resets but I don't remember seeing a way to skip through setup. Right after the activation screen it went to the software update screen. Im gonna factory reset in a little bit but I'm not sure it would help test because I'm already on 7.1.1
Would reallt SUCK if I got a replacement on 7.1 and the setup installed 7.1.1 before I could unlock

We probably won't see it for atleast another month the way Verizon is with their updates. Either way I will avoid it, I value root too much.
Update PDF to see changelog and what was updated/improved/ruined. However you want to look at it. Seems like very minor changes from which not many people will benefit.

Yeaaaaaaaa. So the update is failing on my device haha. I'll take it as a sign. I don't really care for it much anyway.
Sounds about right. They either wait too long, or shoot it off before its ready. hahaha
Anyone know why my update may be failing though? update failure code 402. I have my phone rooted/debloated. I don't think that should make the update fail though.
To resolve, try plugging the Phone up to a PC and install the Verizon Updater software that is on the Phone's flash drive..(it is one of the disks that auto pops up when you connect the phone).

haha nah. I have linux on my vbox. I have other workstations at work with windows 7 on 'em. I can't get it to open. I wonder if it is because we are blocking outbound ports with ACL's and maybe the software needs access to something to launch. I'll try off of a public Wifi as that's wide open. That's the only similarity between the windows7 and 8.1 machines.
EDIT: yup, it requires port 443 to be open (which it is) but it is also passing through our content gateway proxy. I believe it was flagging it as some malicious. Luckily, I know it's not malicious and I am the systems admin so I was able to bypass

Of course you are! Come on.... I am sure some more simple method will be developed but until then you would want to follow the directions closely. Still in Beta as well and everything is not 100% but I can guarantee he got it rooted! It's just whether you can write to certain partitions or not.

If anyone tries this could you report back on how it goes. I'd be willing to buy a S6 today if this materializes into a true way to root the Verizon s6. I can't tell from the op, but is this root method have wp off? I know someone got root for the turbo a few months ago and it was basically useless.

What this is going to give you (if it works on your firmware version) is JUST root. So you will be able to do certain things but you CANNOT flash custom roms cause that has to do with the bootloader, and that bad boy is LOCKED tight. I'm not saying it won't happen but probably not. Hopefully someone starts developing Safestrap again (for this device). I left Verizon long ago because of their crap with locking down phones but I still thought you guys would like to know the info i found, seeing as it's a given that every Verizon device will make it next to impossible to achieve root. The root method for the Turbo was a different kind of exploit but I am pretty sure that this method will at least allow you to do some of the basic "must have" rooting tweaks. ie. Ad blocker, totally removing bloat, Hotspot mods, etc. Best thing to do is follow him over at the link I posted. Hope u guys get this all figured out and remember, this is just in beta right now, so if you can't get root that does not mean 100% for sure that this won't work 4 you. No frustrations I realise that its only in beta phase 1 so its possible with a simple fix it might become more stable. Plus like you said with this exploit you are only gonna be able to do a few limited things until someone comes along and makes something like safestrap. Plus im pretty sure the system will still be write protected. A lot of hurdles to overcome to fully modify this phone. Can you tell me what kernal date youre friend had that was success?

Working now!
So I just picked up a refurbished Sprint v20. It is currently at zv3 so i'll be able to use Dirty Santa. My issue is do I? I know there's no going back since there isnt a factory image for Sprint.
If you've unlocked, are you happy you did so?
Very happy. but im biased since i made it...
Well, I didn't need much convincing. Thanks! Very smooth process, it's really nice to actually have TWRP on a lg phone again. Haven't had that since my LG G2.
yea it was a no brainer for me coming from a sgs7e , i hated the fact i could not do nanddroids or flash custom roms, i love my v20.
Bootloader possibly unlocked
So I just called Sprint and reemed them on how there bootloader practices are illegal and that this is an open source phone. Not an Iphone. My device is paid off ect. They supposedly are fully unlocking it as we speak. In the mid of a six hour phase I guess. I was told not to reboot during six hours. On ZVD firmware btw. If this does happen to get fully unlocked including bootloader ect., can I finally root my phone? I really hope so. I am running out of options.

Sadly I did not notice any difference. I got an Android update message a few times. That happens daily though. I will call them tomorrow. Open source doesn't mean you have to have an unlocked bootloader. Open source just means you must be provided with a copy of the source code of the open source components (some parts are closed source), which LG has complied by allowing anyone access through this site.
Personally I'd be surprised if it's even technically feasible for them to unlock your bootloader.

Ok...well anyway not being able to root is still garbage. Especially on a device that is paid off. I only pay for service.
Love also how - the variant is rootable and this one is not game. So should I be mad a Sprint or LG? Whos fault is it?Rooting is perfectly legal. Seems blocking it is just as legal in this case.

Because this has the flagships that I want. Except root. Cant even find a rootable one to buy unless I get a non sprint phone. I am also not posting out of anger, but for irritation of companies thinking that thay can do what ever and we have to take it.
Was wondering tho, if I am network unlocked, cant I take to a different carrier and their firmware would replace Sprints ZVD one (cdma I know) , and then be able to root via that phone/firmware method?

If it wasn't for antirollback (all other firmware, except the h918 which has a different key so no other variant can flash it, is antirollback 0) you could, but the way it is you'd brick if you forced it on there.
Ok then. Well thank you for info everyone. Im just going to be a lump on a log for awhile.

You should have gotten the Essential phone on one of their many deals ($140 with Sprint)($225 on Amazon)
Its really the only phone I found that replaced my AT&T v20 and I'm enjoying Android Pie allot (we got the Sept security update yesterday)
There is a way to go back, I made a thread detailing the method to restore with a stock aboot image.

It does not have the dual cam, and removable battery like the v20. I have my reasons. Believe me . Only issue is Sprint not being able to root...supposedly. Pro_Granade kinda has my hopes up atm lol
I know, I know, WHY DID I BUY THE VERIZON PIXEL 2? Well, i actually got it as a gift from my parents, they got the BestBuy 100$ off so they thought it was a good deal. I personally had a Nexus 6P but my battery was completely dying and i bought it from newegg so i cant rma it. I got it today and i love it, but its so weird without the ability to use still like greenify, adblock, titanium backup, etc. So is there a guess of when there will be a bootloader unlock if there will be one?
Was there ever an unlock for the Verizon Pixel? Therein lies your answer.

Not sure if joking/sarcasm, but there was an unlock for the Pixel but it was discovered by accident. Definitely no guarantee for it this time around.

There is a guarantee. It won't happen.

That's a silly assumption...
I guess we can only hope the same thing happens. Im going to keep it for updating for as long as I can.

What do you mean? Why would you not update? You will never get root on that device so either sell it or live with it. Not updating will only make your device less secure. Besides, you'll need to update to the November patch in order to fix the Krack wifi exploit. This is not a silly assumption, this is fact. I'd be more than happy to eat my words at some point but for now the sugar is in the back of the cabinet.
All we need is a bounty thread at this point. You know that's next right? This way everyone complaining about Verizon can go to one place to rant and not all over the boards.

Agreed. But if he got it as a gift then his options might be limited if it was not bought outright. I'd just say live with it, most people aren't rooting any longer anyway. There is no root yet although that might be coming when images are released. Bootloader unlock, however, on the Verizon Pixels is not going to happen anytime soon, if ever. And to the OP, @Etheralrealm you don't need TiB if you're not flashing roms really. Greenify is a waste with this device and Adaway has some VPN alternatives. I'd just enjoy the device and forget about messing with it.
Yeah, it was bought on a payment plan so my options with selling it are kind of limited.

I brought it back to Verizon and since it was only a few days they actually were willing to reverse my purchase. I ordered a 6P battery kit and it is working great again, hope it lasts!
if i went to a Verizon store tomorrow and got a Pixel 2, and removed the sim and disabled WiFi, would i still be able to unlock the bootloader and root?
there is only a $35 restocking fee, but i'm only vaguely familiar with the unlock procedure for the Pixel 2, and haven't found any recent posts about it. obviously if i learn that it is possible, i will more heavily research the procedure. i'm just trying to avoid a $35 restocking fee if at all possible.
another thing i am wondering about as of writing this is, does updating a Verizon Pixel 2 relock the bootloader and kill root? would buying the phone from Google make it update safe?
thanks for all your help!

If Verizon figures out you've unlocked the bootloader, they can and/or will refuse to accept it. There are threads following the Verizon version, which should have the answers your looking for.
Why even bother with Verizon at all? You've answered your own questions.
Purchase from Google, root with no worries of a relocked bootloader ever happening, and you can rest easy.
Also, 35% of $1000, is $350.

No way in hell I would pay 1k for this phone considering it's impossible to play FPS games due to mutitouch problems I'm not happy I paid even 150 for it!

I don't know if it is still able to be unlocked. Odds are that as long as it is not updated past the January update, then you can unlock the bootloader. Once unlocked though, there is very little chance any update would relock it for two reasons:
1. OTA Updates fail when you're unlocked
2. If it did relock, it would wipe your phone. Verizon wouldn't want that bad PR from wiping people's without consent.

It's a regular pixel 2, it doesn't cost anywhere near $1k and very few people have the multi touch bug. Even if you did, this phone has a 2 year warranty, so you're covered either way.

Probably it's already been updated to the March update, so no. And even though the January (and November) firmware is still at Google's site, it's probably locked against downgrading. (Anyone with a non-unlockable bootloader want to try?)

my friend at the verizon store was willing to check the software versions on the boxes, and found one that was before OPM2.171019.016. i'm not sure what, but it was OPM1.xxxxxx.xxx. some were already OPM3.xxxxxx.xxx.
it isn't true that an unlocked bootloader = a failed OTA update, as this was the issue i had with my Pixel 1. i got it early, unlocked with depixel8, and rooted. i then disabled OTA updates, and yet somehow, one made it through. it did not relock my bootloader, but it did leave me on a software version that was not rootable, even though my bootloader was unlocked. it is my main concern. but also, i want updates, i just want them to happen on my terms and not break my device.
any thoughts?

I would suggest searching through the forums for your answers which have been posted numerous times. You've opened a second thread to a discussion that has been addressed in its entirety here. https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-2/how-to/unlock-bootloader-verizon-pixel-2-t3730076
Again the question of "How do I update my phone when it is rooted/BL unlocked" has been answered over and over. Probably good to try and keep the forum clean and searchable for everyone. That's the preferred method.
@MikeChannon Can you please lock this thread before it goes into the wild? Duplicate post
