Using Nova Launcher to replace Fire Launcher - Fire HD 8 and HD 10 General

Hello!
This is my first post, so please don't be too harsh
This is for the Fire HD 8 2016, though it should work on the HD 10, as well as any previous version
I saw this thread over on the original fire thread, and I have discovered it also works on the HD 8.
Obligatory "I take no credit for the app", and Obligatory "I am not responsible for bricked devices"
Edit 1: Widgets don't work due to not currently having a functioning root strategy for these devices

Doesn't this option require there home button accessibility change? This is not an option with the newest OS version. Let me know how -thanks.

I'm pretty sure there is, I'm on 5.3.1.1, not sure if it works on 5.3.2, but go to settings>accessibility, scroll to bottom and enable "To detect home button press"

I then got to HIDE amazon apps that I do not want to see on the desktop ! . . . . ( chuckle chuckle )

Thank you . . .

Waiting for root.

Has anyone been able to get widgets to work using Nova Launcher? I have tried to use Zooper, however it brings me to system settings and no widget is displayed on the home page.

No. It will be impossible without root because the launcher would need system access.

Works on my Fire HD 8 with 5.3.2, but when I press the Home button, it briefly flashes the stock launcher screen, then displays Nova. I haven't rebooted since installing. Otherwise, it works well.

Try lowering your animation/transition settings in Developer Options. I have all 3 settings on 0.5 and it seems to help.

This is one of the first changes I've made on all of my android devices.
Makes the phone seem snappy!
Anyway, it just makes the bug disappear a bit faster, but not at all.

Sadly, there is no way without root to make it so you only see nova (currently). I tried using tasker to capture home button presses, but didn't have any luck. Maybe someone with more experience with tasker can help?

Setting "windows animation scale" and "Transition animation scale" to off seemed to help prevent all the open windows from flashing when hitting home button.
Has anyone got wallpapers / animated wallpapers to work?
I can use the default in Novalauncher and default Kindle ones but install apps does not work. For example, Nova says "app not installed" when I select it inside the wallpaper setup of Nova. Kindle display options does not see it either.

It depend on the ROM you are running, most stock Android will popup the task manager when pressing Home for few seconds, HomeFlip should preserve this behavior by default.
I'll check CM9 (this is what you are running right ?) internals to see if there is a way to hijack this, but keep in mind that I try to keep HomeFlip as non-invasive as possible, so any features that require additional permissions or dirty tricks is a no go for me, Respect peoples phone is my policy

I know the long-press home action, and of course, I don't like it . I have a cheap and weak phone (HTC explorer), so your animation seem a bit laggy . I have a dedicated button for recent apps, but it take about 1-1.5 second to load . So go to home and tap app icon is even faster than using the recent apps menu .
Looking for the update . By the way, the apk size is tiny, but cached process need 10MB, is that normal ?

You can disable the animation from settings (context menu).
HomeFlip to not not cache anything by itself, but it is possible that the OS itself cache information (i.e. icons), I'll have a look.
Anyway, Android is getting good at managing memory itself, the times where you had to manually kill tasks are hopefully over.
Thanks.

[Q] goggle chrome beta add to homescreen

This morning I have noticed on my s4 and n7 the menu option for add to home screen has disappeared from both devices.
Why would this be? I loved this feature.

Any idea why add to home screen has disappeared?
When I press on pages I have already saved it says "app is not installed"

Google / Chrome devs acknowledge this, and say the feature will be back. Really annoying, as we factored it into a solution - i.e., build a proof of concept as a web app, and run it in fullscreen app mode on the phone and tablets. Incredibly disappointing that they handled it this way. There's also an experimental flag you can set to supposedly re-enable it (type Chrome://flags in URL bar, and scroll down till you see the option to enable it). Seems to work on ICS, but not on JB or KK (at least on my devices). Horribly disappointed.

moto g 4.42 KitKat apps menu icons problem

Hi I have a problem with my 8gb moto g occasionally the apps disappear I can click somewhere on the screen and it will start that app but can't see anything.
Seems like that's a glitch with the launcher. Try switching to nova launcher or apex launcher (you can download them from google play). You'll get more features from them too.

Hi i'd say the only solution if you don't want to install a different launcher is to wait for Motorola to release a software update. As for the home menu, you can change your default launcher with that and network operator just let's you automatically or manually select your operator.

[HOW TO] Set a custom launcher as default home application

Soon after I bought the fire HD6 I quickly realized that upon installing an alternative launcher, the device would not allow you to set that launcher as default. Today I figured out a way around this issue and put together a quick video showing all the steps. This tutorial should work for all Fire devices spanning from the Fire HD6 and HD7. Before going through the tutorial I suggest you get ADB set up and working on the computer for your Fire device. Enjoy!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v6_2GoSz5N4
Help setting up ADB in Windows: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CyJlmTtLsIg
Following this guide will make it so you cannot use the Amazon Book app. A way around this issue would be to side-load the Kindle app. But not any Kindle app, a hacked version I made with a different signature and package name. That way your device will allow the installation and will not downgrade each boot. Download the APK below to get your books working:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bx_94ujbh0qobVBJbWFyVzNzeUU/view?usp=sharing
Now you will be able to access your books.

I basically just changed the package name and resigned it so that it will think it is a different app so it allows you to install it. I used apktool to decompile but had problems compiling till I removed some services from the Manifest file. I tried newer versions but could not get them to run without force closing.

The best solution I've found so far is the app "Ultimate Rotation Control". It will allow you to manipulate the display as you see fit and even set parameters per app.

It just shows the device as 'offline' so I can't get it back to the stock dash and it's stuck at the Fire loading screen. It's the same in Windows/Ubuntu. Just a notice for anyone else to undo the custom dash before proceeding with the update.

oh god, you scared the **** out of me for a second - I had gotten the update but had never used adb since then. tried just now, and ... nothing.
but! then I remembered, I had turned adb off on the HD, lol. turned it on and all is well.
I am running Nova launcher, and have the real launcher permanently blocked, along with a few other things:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=58360063&postcount=5
maybe your problem is something else? (or hopefully, maybe like me, just pilot error and usb debugging was turned off.)
I don't remember turning debugging off. I wouldn't have had any reason to disable it. I just assumed it was reset by the update. Either way, I had to do a factory reset to get it working again. To be honest, the custom dash was mostly a novelty. I'm happy enough with stock. Being able to use Google apps is all I'm worried about.
No body else appears to have mention having problems making widgets on your home screen. Every time I place a new widget it, just takes me to the main setting screen and on going back home there is no new widget.
I have been assuming that this is something else that requires root, but I thought I'd better check.
Thanks for kindlehack.apkill give it a try, ps use nova beta for wallpaper

[app] mLauncher home replacement 2/28/16

This is mLauncher It's built for the nexus player and may work on other androidTV products. It lists all your apps including your sideloaded ones. Only has a couple features but here they are:
Display all your apps, set wallpaper, reboot, power off.
update: 2/28/16
changed the ui a little
DECREASED APP SIZE BY SEVERAL MBS!!!!!!
fixed the built in wallpaper switcher so that it displays all pictures in /sdcard/Pictures
Things to note:
Reboot and power off require root (Why haven't you done it yet?).
For the wallpapers function to work you have to sideload a wallpapers app on your NP.
To open quick settings press play on the remote Y on the game pad.

update 8/23/15
changed ui a little
added clock
fixed settings issue
Isn't it unnecessary to have a power off function on the Nexus Player? If it's an actual shut down rather than a sleep mode, then it would require the user to unplug power from their device and plug it back in before it could be used again.
I've got mine hooked up to a light switch so when I'm about to go to sleep and too lazy to get up it works great. Next day just flip the switch. I was experimenting with deep sleep but the way the stock Rom is set up to get it to work you have to remove daydream from the system and it takes a minute. I think on cm12 it would work. I could add the feature pretty easily. I was gonna add a shortcut to overscan and fix a small issue this week. Just let me know I'll put it in there.

Here's a beta release that fixes an issue I've been having with the app list not updating when you uninstall or install an app. It's a pretty dirty hack but seems to work okay. Remember this is beta and I'll be looking at different ways to implement it. So if your uninstalling and installing apps a lot give it a shot but if not pass on this.

Here's a beta release with new sleep function. It requires root access click it and screen goes into deep sleep. There's another way to do this without root but it requires you to change backdrop to none and it takes 10 seconds. Not very functional in my book. Everything else is working great. Thanks
