I made a small home button launcher replacement, mainly for myself to overcome my new note 2 'bulkiness' when it comes to switch tasks quickly. Give it a try and let me know if you found it useful.

very useful app. thanks for sharing.
an idea from me: add a swipe option for opening the app. for ex. horizontal swipe open up the HomeFlip.

Your not missing anything, this is a oversight from my part, I should have known that the xda crowd was likely to have at least one custom launcher in addition of the stock one installed!.
Thanks for the feedback, will fix this soon.

Thank you very much for making this app. It's nice and light. I tried it, but I will have to wait till the option to choose "default" launcher available to install it again :highfive:.
And is there anyway that I could replace the default recent apps with your app ? I have a button for recent apps, but it takes age to load

It depend on the ROM you are running, most stock Android will popup the task manager when pressing Home for few seconds, HomeFlip should preserve this behavior by default.
I'll check CM9 (this is what you are running right ?) internals to see if there is a way to hijack this, but keep in mind that I try to keep HomeFlip as non-invasive as possible, so any features that require additional permissions or dirty tricks is a no go for me, Respect peoples phone is my policy
Thanks.

I know the long-press home action, and of course, I don't like it . I have a cheap and weak phone (HTC explorer), so your animation seem a bit laggy . I have a dedicated button for recent apps, but it take about 1-1.5 second to load . So go to home and tap app icon is even faster than using the recent apps menu .
Looking for the update . By the way, the apk size is tiny, but cached process need 10MB, is that normal ?

You can disable the animation from settings (context menu).
HomeFlip to not not cache anything by itself, but it is possible that the OS itself cache information (i.e. icons), I'll have a look.
Anyway, Android is getting good at managing memory itself, the times where you had to manually kill tasks are hopefully over.
Thanks.

Hi there, i just want to have feedback on my TaskOS app.
This application show to the users all the apps he opened and never closed. ( leave applications with HOME key and it will appear. Leave with back key and won't appear.)
The user can scroll between all these apps and launch one by clicking on it or kill it by dragging to the top ( like Palm PRE)
That's a beta, but all the mains features are there.
What do you think of it.
PS: i am looking for ROM developpers that would be able to launch it by long click on the "home" button or trackball/other.
Features
* customizable icon size
* wave effect ( i think i'll remove it)
* confirm killing app or not
* notification to launch easily ( looking for people who know ho to integrate this with long press on home button - trackball)
* more to come...
Will come
* theming the bar
* ignore apps by moving icon to the bottom
Screenshots:
Looks nice but why doesn't it show as many apps as say taskiller?
I'm using a Nexus One btw
For what version of Android is this? Can I run this on my 1.5 device with Sense?

nice thought, i like it!
I'm running 1.6 stock and unfortunately it doesn't show up when
i leave any app with home-key, but i find the idea of holding
home-key pressed in order to show up really nice!
...and yeah, i stopped using *press-here-to-kill-all-tasks*
I kinda like it
some suggestions:
- gestures (like from down to up to open it)
- Lock the slide up feature while scrolling
- Maybe previews of apps (would require lots of mem somehow)?
- click anywhere other than the switcher to close the switcher
- don't display apps twice
BTW: what about making an app launcher like the wave launcher from webOS? shouldnt be too hard and very useful
I like the idea of a Pre app launcher, but I want to say something related to memory may bog things down a little bit.

alright. Nevermind the thumbnails by gestures i mean like a system one so you drag up from the bottom of the screen to open taskOS but i guess that isn't possible unfortunately... maybe use a longpress menu to open it? would be great if a different solution was possible to open the switcher up
see news here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=5404622#post5404622 to launch with Home key, but i guess i won't have answers.
I think Google should allow users to make custom shortcuts by clicking on buttons!
Ignore function does not work on some screen sizes!!!!
I'll have a look thursday! Be patient
Could you possible add a memory counter at like the corner somewhere to show how much free ram we have? Also, any way to make this look/work a bit more like the WebOS cards if possible?
As for resolution I notice you have a Hero, so I take it you made the res for Hero(my Eris has the same res as the Hero)?

This isn't entirely true.
Some apps need to be force killed.
Android takes care of this only when the situation is really dire.
Why waste the valuable RAM?
Let's say you use App "X" once a day, but it's a resource (memory + cpu) hungry app, like Maps and derivatives.
Now, this is an app which will figure in the active list, but some of them like remaining in the background. Have 5 of those, and your system will work at a crawl.
Now try killing that app. You can really feel the difference, especially if you're using 7201A based handsets (that's 528Mhz).
Take a look at com.eolwral.osmonitor.
IMO, the best task manager around. And it's free (as well as ad-free).
why not mail the author and share some ideas?
You do have a innovative approach to task management (ui-wise).
i don't know if anyone has the same problems, but since last update i keep getting force closes when trying to kill an app!
edit: dis- and reenabling kill popup fixed the problem. weird.

You are the only one people that I heard having this problem... Really strange but i am glad that Taskos work again!
Next time, send me the logcat so i will be able to correct the bug!
Yeah, it would be nice if we could use TaskOS by holding home... The normal Android switcher is so useless.
very nice app ... will be essential if you find a way to use as task switcher (longpress home)
could you maybe add the option to hide statusbar icon?
also kinetic scrolling would be very welcome
Inertia in scrolling: seem to be so hard to implement.... You will have to wait.
Long press home: Developpers don't have access to this! I will investigate with Custom ROM developers. Imagine all apps can acces home button and you press it!
Ability to remove statusbar icon: will be done in next update.
I think that I left a bug in previous update. Nobody told me and i just corrected this evening. Sorry for the inconveniance!

Regardless of the feeling that this is an astroturfed post, I'll try it since there are three things about WebOS that I wanted to make love to after leaving my Palm device. This covers one such concern.
After approximately fourteen seconds with this app, I can say that if it holds up on resource usage, it will never, ever leave my phone.
Single click brings up my "open" apps.
Double click takes me back to home.
Triple click replicates a unicorn out of my camera lens that burps rainbows and farts lasers.
Its as close to app cards as we will get on Android. Kudos to whoever is behind this.
Checked it out, all is good... only if we can map this to home button LONG press action, to replace the current task switcher.
Good look with finding this app and telling us!!! I think its pretty sweet and works well, the only gripe I have with it, is that on my EVO is kills leap when I hit the home button
Desperately needs the option to set launch button.

If you use cm6 you can change visual task switcher to replace the default home long press in the settings

You can't use it with a custom launcher, try deleting any other launcher then it might forward correctly. Or if your on a sense rom just ban/remove sense
~edit~ I just did that and it works fine. You have to have only VTS and the launcher you want to use active.

I noticed that when trying it out. It was quite disheartening since I REALLY love the app and enjoy being able to modify which items are where on the screen layout, but without an app drawer, it's kinda.... useless.
Update: Looks like Beta 2 has been released, and app drawer functionality has made it's way back in.
Horray for the updated features as well as being able to use it as my launcher replacement!
I'm not sure if this is a bug, so I might file it as a feature request on the bug reporting page - Pressing the "Home" button on an HTC EVO doesn't bring you back to the main launcher page, instead leaves you either in an app drawer view, or in a settings menu. To get back to the launcher, you need to press the "Back" button several times.

I've posted a bug report about the home button and got a response. Hopefully they end up getting a fix out for it relatively soon.
I think some of the FC's you might be getting are from the Android version you're running. You have a Sony X10? Aren't you running 1.6? I'll have to look further, but I think that the app is compatible with Eclair or above currently.
Great home replacement app! I do have some pet peeves though:
- As others have said, you cannot return to your old homescreen even when pressing the Home key several times. It would be nice for it to revert to a previous home launcher (e.g. ADW, Launcherpro) unless prompted again.
- Is it possible to make use of K9 Mail instead of GMail for the email client? A plugin of some sort would be mighty fine.
Other than that, this might be my next favorite app for Android.

If you enter the App Drawer and press Menu -> Home Settings -> Home Switching -> Toggle "Switch Homes"
I think this is what you are referring to? This should allow you to use the Home button to toggle between SS and your main launcher.

Tired of moving your fingers up/down your tablet to switch applications? Try out TasKarou!
TasKarou is a multitasking launcher overlay.
Taking inspiration from the 'Quick Controls' feature in the android browser, TasKarou provides a multitasking layer on top of a launcher for phone and tablets.
By swiping anywhere on the left or right edge of your device screen, you can activate TasKarou's UI, giving you access to a quick, smooth, and intuitive interface to facilitate app launch, transition, and management for the user
The user interface brings a more responsive, and enjoyable level of interaction to your device.
The app is available in the android market: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ne0fhykLabs.home.taskarou
Notes:
To use TasKarou, set it as the default home launcher, and from TasKarou's settings, select the actual home launcher you want to overlay.
TasKarou user interface is then triggered by swiping from either the left of right edge of your tablet screen, while still allowing access to the overlaid home launcher through the home button.

It should be possible, but unfortunately, I lack the resources to pursue development in that area (lack of devices running GB).
If someone has the knowledge, and the resources, I might consider open sourcing the app to allow development in that area.
I installed the app on my rooted Kindle Fire HD running ADW Launcher. It was nice to finally have multi-tasking/task switching ability on the tablet. Unfortunately had to uninstall it because it kept on causing failures with App Protector Pro - which I rely on more than task switching. When a new version comes out I'll try again.
Otherwise, great app!

I should mention that the error only occurs if you somehow try to avoid entering the password such as hitting the cancel button or the back button.
HI!
I've been using this app for a week now, and love it.
I have some suggestions that might be useful:
-I have a galaxy note 2 and it's quite difficult for short fingers like me to reach back/menu buttons when operating with one hand. Could you please, please, pleeease add them?:fingers-crossed:
-Also it would be awesome to customize menus. For example, I don't use the options buttons quite often as I use 15 toggles toolbar, and the lower menu is easier to access with my thumb than the upper. That's where I'd locate home, menu and back buttons (if added), but maybe another person that's using a tablet likes the way it is now. Customizable buttons would solve this problem, so anyone could move/add/remove the buttons as he prefered.
-When using Google Chrome and swapping between tabs,it's necessary to move your finger horizontally from the border of the screen, and taskarou is launching when doing this. Perhaps you could implement an additional way to launch it by moving the finger vertically along the border of the screen.
-Last, It would be great to have the possibility to add a shortcut to any application, so you could quick launch your most used apps.
Well, perhaps all of this is asking too much but you would make me sooo happy if you could implement the first suggestion
Hey ne0fhyk,
Could you add customisation to the buttons?? So that you can replace them with whatever you want, I would really like the back home and applications button, also a time overlay on the corcver of the screen when the launcher is activated would be aweomse
I just wanted to add my vote for the ability to customize the menu..
I like the idea, but would prefer to be able to use the existing default screens for multitasking, app drawer, etc.
Perhaps this could be accomplished similar to other apps / lauchers that have an intent / activity / application browsers to make shortcuts (NovaLauncher / QuickShortcutMaker are good examples from the Play store). Perhaps there could be a nested ordered list of menu items in the settings with support for drag and drop to arrange shortcuts, and add new shortcuts
After basic customization is available it would be nice to see support for Automation app API's to create shortcuts to actions from Tasker, AutomateIT Pro, etc
Thanks for listening!
All better!

The very informative error of "App Protector Pro has stopped."
---------- Post added at 10:05 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:00 AM ----------
I should mention that the error only occurs if you somehow try to avoid entering the password such as hitting the cancel button or the back button.

Turns out that the problem was with App Protector Pro. I updated the app and no more problems. Happily using TasKoarou again.
Can you add a few buttons like back, lock screen and volume up down? like in buttonsavior app? I really liked your app, very useful and beautiful.

Thanks for the suggestions. I just pushed an update that add back, and menu shortcuts for rooted devices.
For the next update, my focus is to add the ability to customize the menu. That update should have the rest of the features you suggested.

Your first suggestions have been implemented, and should be available in the app, starting with version 3.2.
Your next suggestions are on my list to get done for the next update!
Sorry for the delay, but because of work, I do not have as much time to spend on this application as I wish. The app is open source though, so if you are a developer, or know interested developer, feel free to pitch in
Please, add shortcuts, last (previious) app, widget panel (from CM roms), open notifications and more hardware keys, like play\pause, volume and others.
Add second (inner) row for regular buttons, while outer row will act the same as now. If this will be implemented, than the outer row can be used in a whole new way. Swiping to the one of it's buttons and taking off the finger will start an action, binded to this button, but if you swipe and hold (with adjustable hold timeout), you'll get an access to submenu for the button.
I would also love to see black list for apps, such as drawing app ArtFlow, which is using screen borders to access tollbars.
I've just installed this app to use it instead of SlimPie in my Slim Bean rom, and I've already bought it, cause I like it's idea. Though, it's less responsive still, compared to LMT or SlipPie.
Keep up the good work.
Stunning work my friend
What are the power consumption repercussions of this? There would be two launchers running and active rather then one.

I tested it on several devices, and it doesn't affect battery life at all. While it's idle (not being triggered by the user), TasKarou launcher only background activity is to keep the trigger edges active, which allows it to consume very little cpu activity while in the background.

Anyone who was hoping to be able to use the new launcher (such as myself) will be happy to know that you can! It appears that the option is there in the 4.2 OTA update, it is just hidden from the settings menu. I assume that Asus are probably still working on it and will release it in a future update.
The only modification I made to Droid-Eye's method was to simply use a setting shortcut widget rather than an entire launcher option such as ADW.
I used 'Secure Settings' from Google Play, which is free. Please bear in mind you also need an Ipack for an icon for your shortcut. Luckily Secure Settings has a handy link to download free ones from Google Play when you are setting up your shortcut.
I hope it helps anyone desperte to try out the new launcher style. It seems many people hate the new launcher, and I'll admit that I did myself the first time I saw it. However, it has grown on me and I'm going to give it a run to see if I like it over the old style. I can always change back...for the moment anyway.
Note: There is no need to be rooted or unlocked to do this. You can always change back to previous launcher by setting up another shortcut widget in the new style launcher. Your tablet will need to restart to make the change, that is normal.
Screenshots.
As Droid-Eye correctly pointed out, the home soft button doesn't line up with the app draw button. I haven't found any other bugs yet.

The instructions worked well for me. So far I keep looking for the buttons in the wrong place. But overall the tablet seems snappier with this launcher. I also do like that the notifications shows across the top so you can see a lot more of the text.

Good looking out
I didn't even think about giving this its own thread. Hopefully, more people will consider trying the new layout now instead of just sticking with the status quo. I know not everyone will prefer them but it's always better to have the choice (I mean, this is Android after all).
Thanks for the credit.

Thanks for the tip, but gmd gesture control seems to have stopped working for me after enabling stock 4.2 launcher.

Thanks, man. I've been playing around in the activities shortcuts since I first got my brand new (at the time) Moto Droid with 2.0.1(to give you a time frame). I've found all kinds of cool stuff that way and it's nice finding solutions that don't require root once in a while. I highly recommend combing through the system activities if only just to see if there's anything hiding, waiting for a later update. This is how I found Face Unlock before they were ready to give it to us, too (though it took some interesting hoop jumping to get it to actually work). Also how I found the stock android dialer so I could try it wwith different SIP clients (still a work in progress).
Anyway, dig through the activities. Guaranteed you'll find something to play with in there.

Maybe check the tf300 threads (since they're the only other ones with this ability) and see if anyone's found a workaround for it. If it's happening for them too and there isn't a fix, I'm sure GMD will want to know about it so it can be fixed before the rest of the tf700 and tf201 communities run into it. Either way, keep the shortcut handy and you can always toggle back whenever they update the app.

What setting shortcut did you use? I'm trying to use the Settings and am having difficulty in choosing the right option underneath it.

Not sure if you're using my method or Gudder's but here's a photo step-by-step of how I do it.

The setting is there, just the Secure Settings tool is less than intuitive. Keep looking around at the tool. I had to look at the sample picture in the second post several times before I figured out what it was showing. I'll post instructions later in the evening when I have time if no one else does.

After you have selected to create a widget using secure settings, pick an app, wait, and select settings. Next, you can click the .settings textfield. That will bring up a long list where you have to pick the .settings#launcherSwitchSettingsActivity. (Almost at the end of the list) Save.
Give the shortcut an appropriate name, pick an icon, and save the shortcut.
Just install Nova launcher.

Load an icon pack first...or you will have to do it again when you get to the pick an icon step.

Back of of Secure Settings and go to your Home screen. Go into the app drawer and tap the Widgets tab. Find the Secure Settings widget and long-press to add to your Home screen. Then, follow the rest of the directions.
Okay folks, hot off the presses. The visual walkthrough of Gudder's suggested Secure Settings method. Enjoy.
