Help deciding LTE vs Bluetooth version - Samsung Gear S3

I've been searching all over the web trying to find the answers to my dilemma, but I'm still can't decide which is better. Paying monthly for LTE or Bluetooth version is better. So far I know that with LTE you can make calls, text, etc. without connected to your phone. As for the Bluetooth version, Can it make call and text over Bluetooth? And can it also make calls and text over Wifi when my phone is on the same network but not connected via Bluetooth? Is it possible to connect the S3 to Google voice and make calls that way as long as I'm on wifi? I hope someone out there could help me answers these questions. Thank you all!!!

same thing i've been wanting to ask before i get one. if i get the wifi/bluetooth version of the frontier, will i be able to use the watch to make a phone call as long as my phone is paired with the watch? how about if my phone is currently paired with my car stereo? do i need to manually switch the pairing from car stereo to watch when i get home? i'm still debating whether i really need the LTE version or just the regular one. any help would be appreciated. ty!

From what I know research, you can pair to both your car and watch at the same time and able to switch back and forth similar to pairing a headset and watch at the same time. but then, its from an LTE watch connected via bluetooth.

I have the LTE version and when it is connected to the phone via Bluetooth it actually disconnects from LTE. So while connected to the phone it is using the phone to make/receive calls and send/receive texts instead of the cellular network. I'm not sure about wifi.

I have the non LTE version. I can make and answer calls as well as make, receive and reply to text messages when connected to my phone via Bluetooth.
I can still make, receive and respond to text messages when my watch is connected via Wifi, but I can't make or receive phone calls from the watch. This is a little disappointing, but it is not enough of a reason for me to get the LTE version and pay the monthly fee.

Not able to make call via WiFi is disappointing but I don't think it's enough to convince me to pay more and commit to monthly for the LTE version.

For many they never leave their cell phone so a BT/WIFI version is perfect (and a little cheaper). I am a runner and also tend to leave my phone on my desk at work when I am going to meetings, etc... The LTE version has been great.
I am on T-Mobile so it only cost an additional $5 per month for a wearable plan.
Good luck either way you will enjoy the watch.

The funny thing with our T- Mobile $5/month plan, is that $7 taxes are added, making it $12/month. A bit crazy to think that a service costs less than regulating taxes for it. Thank you Uncle Sam...

I'm so tempted to get the LTE because it said if I do Autopay(EasyPay? something like that) then its only $5 a month but then taxes doesn't make sense and plus I have to pay $100 extra for the LTE version. It hurts not having the LTE version, but I think I will just have to bite my tongue and endure the pain and get the BT/Wifi version. :crying::crying::crying:

i have the frontier lte version through tmobile and i pay a monthly bill of $20 for unlimited data.
i dont have a line other than my watch through tmobile which is why its $20 ($15 for a data allowence). i actually like the lte version, i origianlly had the bluetooth version ordred through samsung. They kept changing my delivery dates so i got irritated and on a whim called tmobile and they had one more left. LTE version gets its on phone number and can have call fowarding set up through the gear app. only real difference between the two is one has the ability to act as a completely stand alone device and the other needs to have BT or wifii connection. I guess the question to ask is, how busy or how often do you NOT have your phone on you that a data plan for a watch is needed?

I am nvr without my phone. So i plan on getting the bt version

With LTE carrier controls the firmware, they may take forever to update when there is an update.

with bluetooth version: (I have an old gear 2 neo).
1. I can make calls when paired with the phone.
2. I don't need to manually switch the pairing from car to watch.
3. I ordered the Classic model (please make sure that you buy the international one), since I like how it looks, and don't want to pay to the cellular company. The Frontier has 2 variants, if you like it more than the classic - you should make your choise.

Thank you so much, guys. I've finally decided to get the BT version of the watch. No matter how much I convince myself, I can't seem to go with the LTE with $100 more and commitment to a monthly payment without much benefits other than not the stand alone function. Love yall Love the community. :victory::victory::victory::victory::victory:

It's a little bit like, which came first, the chicken or the egg? We always have our phone because there is no other viable option. When there is another option, we'll find numerous reasons to leave our phone behind.

True i went for the LTE version because i just hate not getting the most out of a device. Im going to Try to leave my phone home one day and go a complete day with just a watch.

Having a 3G allows me to keep my phone nearby but not on me. So it's somewhere in the house when I'm at home, it's left in the car when I'm out and about, it's in the desk when I'm running around at work...

I would prefer the LTE version, if it was available in Germany. The reason is that my phone as well as the Gear S3 can hold only ONE bt connection. My phone, however, needs the bt connection. This means that every time I enter my car I must disable the bt connectivity in the Gear S3. Very complicated and time consuming. If the Gear S3 has an own LTE modul, a wifi connection (hotspot open in the phone) suffices in order to receive and reply to notifications (WhatsApp, SMS and others). I am wondering whether I can find a solution for my problem in IFTTT...

I bought a Gear S3 classic (no LTE). I don't think that the watch could replace the phone. By the way - the Classic has GPS and WiFi connections.

Can I use my thunderbolt out of the country?

I'm going to be going on a cruise this weekend to Mexico and was wondering what I need to do with my phone, if anything. I'm pretty sure the TB is just CDMA so it won't work in such place as Mexico. I wasn't sure if it had any additional capabilities due to the sim card or if that's only for 4G.
Anyway, I would like to still use my TB for games and music while I'm there. Is there anything specific I need to do to prevent any outrageous charges from happening. Thanks in advance.
They radio off and you should be fine or put it on airplane mode just used WiFi to do emails if anything, that's what I miss from my iPhone I could take it out the country like nothing and still used it lol, oh yeah be carefull I almost lost my phone one time and people might try to steal it too

You are correct it is just CDMA however it will work in Mexico. I just came back from Cabo San Lucas and it was fine there but as jgalan says turn off your data so you are just able to make phone calls. Fyi, .50 cents per text outgoing, .05 cents incoming and .99 cents a minute for a call while in Cabo. There used to be a time where you could change your plan to unlimited global email but they don't have that now instead it's like $90 for 100mb of data and when you pro-rate that you have very little data available to you without additional charges.
Thanks for the info guys. I'm going to Grand Cayman Islands and Cozumel which is near Mexico. This is my first cruise so not exactly sure what it all means lol. Do you think it will work there? But when you say turn off data, is that as simple as pulling down my notification bar, quick settings, and turn Mobile Network off?(I'm running gingeremix 2.1).
I'm not too concerned about making calls or anything of that sort, just want to be able to play games and listen to music and not get charged anything. My best bet to just go into airplane mode? But if the phone does work there, just make sure data is off?

good to know! Is it safer to just put in airplane mode? I worry about charges and I know my whole family is going to tell me to leave my phone but I really want to bring it along. They don't understand lol.
I traveled Mexico and Central America for six months, by motorcycle, last year.
Since I was going so long, I bought a cheap Telcel phone for $20 in Mexico. Then, i had it unlocked to use anyone's SIM card. I popped local prepaid cards in while living in Guatemala. It didn't work anywhere else, for me.
I also broke my netbook early on the trip, and used my 2008 iPod Touch as my main comms device. Skype with a headset mic and I was good in hotels and Internet cafes. I would think that you'd do the same with your HTC.
yup, i just put mine in airplane mode when i'm traveling. there's really no need to text or call when you're on vacation anyway.
Couldn't you use WiFi for data if it is available?
I was in China and I just rocked airplane mode and used wifi whenever it was available
FYI, most cruise ships have WIFI on board, so theoretically you could still use your phones via WIFI. I say "theoretically," b/c the cruise i went on back in January charged out the rear for WIFI.
But like others have said, just disable the data. There is also a single button widget you can put on your home screen that will disable/enable with one touch, so that you don't have to go through the menus. Same for WIFI, airplane mode, bluetooth and GPS.

I just left my data on when I went to Cozumel. Most of the time, the ship was out of cell service, however I received emails in bulk when the ship was close to land and in service. I did not have any charges on my bill. I don't recall getting any text messages at the time though.
Anyways, have fun.
I just got back from south america and it worked great!!

[Q] Verizon Galaxy Tab 7.7 incoming phone calls?

Hi,
Using Google Voice and Groove IP, I am able to place ourgoing calls with no problem.
Is there a way or a setting that I don't see that would allow incoming phone calls as well. When I dial the google # from a standard cell phone, it goes right to VM.
Any help would be most appreciated.
Access Google voice with a browser. login and under settings add Google chat as another forwarding line. Then edit your forwarded mobile phone number and under advanced settings have Google voice ring your other lines if it can't reach your mobile phone. Now when someone calls your mobile number and u don't pick up, it will ring your tablet.
Should have gotten an international voice+3g tab, much better than going through all these steps. just saying.....

I realize most everyone on here tries to find a work around from having to pay for anything.. but in this case why not just make it easy on yourself and use Skype? I have been paying VZW 100.00 per month, 1200.00 per year! for my smart phone for about 6yrs but recently suspended it in favor of trying something different.
I got the idea when I had my Xoom and and it worked so well that I sold that and recently purchased the much lighter, pocketable, portable Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7
I still pay VZW 30.00 for a 2GB data plan per month but Id have to pay that with my smart phone anyway.. I then use (free) google voice for all my text and pay a subscription to Skype of 2.99per month or 30.00 for the whole year for unlimited calls.. I also purchased a number from them which is another 30.00 per year so people can call me. So it comes out to under 70.00 for the whole year! rather than 1200.00
I know that may not work for everyone.. it's not ideal having to use two different numbers and if your data strength is so so it may not work so well.. I also know there are probably many many other ways to do this.. but for me I don't think 70.00 per year is a lot to pay plus the convenience of not having to set much up totally works for me..
@bioshock22, you can achieve what you just described using what OP is using... And you don't pay the $70/yr. GrooveIP/Google voice gives you a free phone number of your choice and free unlimited incoming / outgoing calls to any US/Canadian number. OP has a single phone number for texting and calls all for free. He just pays verizon for the data plan.
@aximtreo, I don't have a forwarding number enabled for Google voice. I just have Google chat checked for forwarding so I can receive calls on the tablet.

As I said in my post I am sure there are many many ways to do this but for me it is all about convenience.. I have no desire to spend a whole day looking through hundreds of these forum posts reading what app this guy recommends only to have another guy say this one is better or this one is better or this one is better.. THEN have to figure out how to forward from google voice, google talk, google this, google that etc. etc.
Like Denzel say's in the movie Philadelphia.. "Explain it to me like I'm a four-year-old"
Rarely does anyone ever do that on here.. everyone assumes you already have an idea what to do so if you don't you better free up a whole day because you'll be spending that time digging through post, after post, after post..
interesting thread. been thinking about this for weeks.
what I wonder is whether anyone is making use of their bluetooth headsets? can calls from either skype or gvoice/grooveip be initiated and answered this way? if yes, I'm almost sure to give up my cellphone entirely! otherwise, I don't think I'd like holding up a 7.7 inch tab up to my noggin like I would my smartphone.

Advantages of 3G version other than standalone device?

I just bought the 3G version. I'm fine without having it connected if its only benefit is using it by itself if I want to leave the phone at home. Which I don't see happening.
Are there any other benefits? I have unlimited so I had to get a new line and am paying $45 for 3gb. Not sure if I even need that.
I don't want the non-3G version because I like the larger watch.
being able to receive / make calls in bt mode is nice. I have the wifi version, the wife has the 3g version, bought on swappa/ never activated.
3g version has speaker built-in, larger battery, ability to be stand alone device with separated number or remotely connected with call forwarding enabled. Im surprised that you had to take new $45 plan. I have smart watch plan for $5 a month. I dont think there is much data included in that plan but I dont use much data on watch itself ( data on phone it is a different story ). Even watching youtube on watch is a pain.

That is my understanding that only 3g versions have speaker/microphone built-in. It is one of the reasons why they are thicker than Bluetooth/WiFi versions

Yea / One of the adv of the 3g is the speaker. My wife has the sport (AT&T off swappa)/ I have the BT/WiFi classic. Both are nice. Personally, I looked at the classic 3g version which I could get on swappa / but it was just too big, I talked to a guy @ ATT who let me try it on. IMHO the WiFi/BT version looks more legit to a true watch.
OK thanks. Yeah I would rather have a slimmer watch than have a speaker or 3g.

LG Urbane 2nd E LTE, AW2.0, & Google Voice calls?

I've got an LG Urbane 2nd Edition LTE with a T-Mo SIM, running the latest AW 2.0 preview. I'd love for it to make Google Voice calls just like my phone does. (It doesn't do anything with I receive a call on my phone which would work best with a GV setup.) It does receive calls when I call the watch directly. I've tried side loading the Google Voice app, but it immediately closes when I try to run it. Does anyone have any ideas?
this is the reason i didn't get an urbane LTE - no way to make outgoing calls from your primary number, even if it's google voice

Huh? I make calls on mine, no problem. It's reliable--works anywhere (AT&T network)--and because of that I've changed my regular smartphone to an easy-to-read phablet. Since I can rely on the LG Watch Urbane LTEx2 for phone calls, texts & grocery lists, I leave the phablet home unless I'm traveling.

that only works on AT&T, which IMO is too expensive unless you're in a grandfathered plan
Not expensive, my watch bill's $9 for 90 days on a pay-as-you-go plan. My main phone is $27 a month, unlimited talk & text, 3 GB data. Yes, I'm on AT&T's network but I pay through "H2O Wireless", an AT&T-based MVNO.

My SO is on cricket and being de-prioritized in high traffic areas isn't worth the lower cost on MVNO's, not to mention VoLTE and WiFi Calling
I'm on T-Mobile on a family plan - we have 6 lines with 4GB each (+intl roaming, free music streaming, etc) for $100/mo
TMo's great where you can get them, had them myself before I moved to the stix.
Don't understand why the watch doesn't work on TMo, tho. Frequencies line up, right? Gotta be something in settings, gotta be a work-around.
Post a new topic at the front, "Help! Can't get watch to work on TMo!" or something like that in the header. Somebody here knows how to get it going.
(This watch deserves its own section on XDA!)

nah, it definitely works fine in terms of connectivity and LTE reception (I"m borrowing it from my friend for a month to try it out, have a phone sim with 4GB data in it) - my issue is that the phone number doesn't match my personal number (T-Mo assigned me a random other number). Also, the speaker volume is a bit low if you're using it in the car or a outdoors during activity

Just curious... when using H20 are you able to pair the watch to your phone through cell data and therefore receive texts to your phone on the watch when you leave the phone at home? I ask because when I first purchased my LGU2 over a year ago I attempted to use a couple of MVNOs unsuccessfully. H20 was one of them. I could make calls/text with the watch's number, but the data wouldn't work so I couldn't pair over cell data instead of Wi-Fi or bluetooth.

I don't use the AT&T app for connecting watch to phone so I don't get to use those features. I give friends my Google Voice/Hangouts numbers and Google forwards calls/texts to the watch & to my smart phone. I know phone calls I initiate on the watch use the watch's number, much to the chagrin of the caller-id-checking friends I call.
Also, I reverted last month from AW2.0 back to AW1.5 (stock) because I couldn't get a note-keeping app to work well on AW2.0. I don't think anything changed with phone connectivity and SMS.

So does data work with H20? I guess that was my question. I don't use AT&T either, I'm using Truphone, but the watch should be able to pair to the phone by using cell data instead of bluetooth if you have a data connection on the watch. Were you able to download apps directly to the watch in 2.0 without being paired to the phone? That should have required data on the watch to work. Also, if you're away from your phone, do you get the cloud icon on the watch indicating disconnected from the phone?
Yes, data works. It's pay-go, usual pricing, but it works.

Ok, thanks. Maybe H20 has updated their SIM since I tried it a year ago and the data settings work now in the watch. Truphone is also pay as you go. The prices are similar.

Please clarify for me: Smartwatch on Sprint.

looking to purchase a smartwatch. Ive decided to become more active for weight loss purpose. hiking, walking/ jogging and cycling isn't a place i wanna carry my new/expensive s8+.
this is where i thought a smart watch would come in. But from what I'm understanding is Sprint doesn't have LTE plan for smartwatches, only BT connection.
correct me if I'm wrong
LTE connection: I can leave my phone in the car while I'm out being active with my smartwatch, and still be connected to phone calls. txt and can stream music to my BT head set.
BT connection: phone has to be near smartwatch to have forwarding txt/call/stream. which to me seems redundant and stupid.
I just upgraded this past weekend. so I can go back, return everything and walk away from sprint and start a new line with either AT&T, T-mobile, or Verizon.
if thats the case (being here in L.A. area) which provider has had better success rate with the s8+/LTE frontier connection, or is it too early to tell yet.
I'm open to other smartwatches, mainly looking for something that'll connect to Myfitnesspal app and maybe someday pokemon go lol.
any and all help appreciated.
Sprint hasn't supported a smart watch from Samsung since I think the first gear s. I don't think there's a way to put it on sprint since they don't even sell this watch or support it. If someone does find a way that would be awesome but I suggest to not get your hopes up. Out of the 4 biggest US carrier sprint doesn't seem Intrested in smart watches at this time. I'm pretty sure they'll eventually allow smart watches in the future since it is a growing market right now

The Gear S3 is only available on AT&T and T-Mobile. Rumor is Verizon will offer it sometime in the future, but whoever truly knows when, isn't saying.
The watch and phone do not have to be on the same network. Mine isn't, and there a couple of folks here who have a phone on Verizon and their Frontier LTE on T-Mobile. T-Mobile (and Verizon) offer standalone wearable plans for $15/mo. AT&T only offers a wearable line as an add on line.
So your phone could remain on Sprint while your S3 is on T-Mobile.

OK, so this was my next question. I've seen verizon to t-mobile, But i haven't seen Sprint to any T-mobile or At&t. but again, everywhere i call i don't get a clear answer, obviously trying to keep themselves from promising something they can't deliver.
So my next questions are(and please understand I'm a novice so your help is greatly appreciated) :
1. if i go with T-mobile and keep my Sprint line, the LTE functions will all work normally WITH T-MOBILES plan?
2. and are there any special steps/ procedures to make it work ?
I'm happy to search it, just wondering if there are any key words to search for this.
Think of watch as a 1" smartphone with it's own plan (with talk, text, and data). The Frontier LTE is capable of operating on its own without a phone, though most folks don't.
If you have two phones, you can put one on Sprint and the other one on T-Mobile. Ditto with the S3.
A Bluetooth connection is not effected by carrier selection.

right, so ill pretty much have my current phone plan with sprint for the s8+, and a phone plan for the Frontier, but ill be able to link them so that my s8+ calls/text/data (maybe not data since it has its own right?) get sent to the Frontier.

which I've done with prior service offers, the only thing confusing me is those are 2 separate lines that don't need to be linked, I.E. I'm not getting info from phone B on phone A and vice versa. while with the S8+ i want it to forward to the s3 gear.
again your patience with my lack of understanding is GREATLY appreciated.
so if it is possible, how do you link them?
i hope you know I've been trying my damnedest to search this before i leave my current provider or do as you say and get service and watch from Tmobile/verizon, which to me would be the best since it would be the most cost effective.
The watch accommodates call forwarding. Since I don't use it, I'll leave that for someone else to explain. There are services that will allow sharing a number across multiple devices. NumberSync on AT&T, Digits on T-Mobile, Message + on Verizon. I believe that all require a compatible phone on their network. Since I don't use them, I'll leave that for someone else to expound on.
I use Google Voice which works with any carrier and on any device. Calls and texts are routed through Google servers and come across simultaneously to my phone, watch, iPad, Samsung tablet and laptop on AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile networks. Outgoing CID is my GV number regardless of what device it originated on. IMHO, Google Voice is more reliable and more flexible than carrier based solutions.
Hi Whopper68, I have a Samsung Note 5 on Verizon, and my Gear S3 Frontier is on T_Mobile. My Note 5 is provided by my work, my family are all on T-Mobile. T-Mobile offers a $5 per month smartwatch plan for current customers, and I believe a standalone $15 a month plan if you are not a current customer.
Think of the Gear S3 as a BT Headset. You can pair it with any phone on any carrier. Most of the time Your watch is BT connected to your phone so it is getting calls/texts/data from your phone. When I go for a run I leave my phone at home. Once the BT connection is lost I can still get all my calls/text/emails if I leave my phone at home turned on and in call forward mode. It simply sends everything to the number assigned to my watch. I can also make calls and many other things since the Gear S3 is operating almost exactly like a tiny smart phone.
Hope that helps, if you really want an S3 you can enjoy it especially since you are using a Samsung S8, it was designed to work seamlessly with Samsung products. The actual carrier is not important. It may cost you a little more for a smartwatch plan.
