WiFi Calling for T-Mobile US? - Honor 8 Questions & Answers

Question. What's Honors stance on adding Wifi calling to future OTAs? It looks like they've received a bit of demand but I haven't heard anything specifically on this since the AMA.

The way I understand it, Huawei is working with T-mobile to get Wifi calling working on the Honor 8 (US version) with a future software update. Whether this actually happens remains to be seen. (I believe that ZTE is still trying to get it to work for their Axon 7.)

I wish I would have known this BEFORE I bought the phone. Specs are great otherwise, but no WiFi calling support on a 'flagship' level device such as this is a deal breaker when you have very little carrier signal (any carrier) in your home. Returning and spending the money on a device with support for what has become a basic functionality on any smart phone.

No, it isn't. This misinformed nonsense also needs to stop being repeated and propagated as fact.
The support is either built into the phone software or not. If the carrier supports it then it works. If the carrier does not, then the option does nothing. The feature itself, however, has to be built into the phone's software. My unlocked HTC 10 supports it as do the Nexus phones, both of which are two examples of non-carrier branded phones.

True. Even if the update provides the device that it will only work if the carrier supports it.

This is the same thing Huawei keeps saying as well, but if the software isn't configured to support it (because the carrier certainly does - On my GS6 with Android 6.0.1 it works just fine - everywhere I have WiFi) it won't work. There's no option in the WiFi menu for WiFi calling, and it's been pretty well documented that they intend to bake this in to the next EMUI update with Nougat. In the mean time, you either deal with the constant ummounting of the SD card and lack of WiFi calling, or take it back for a phone that isn't quite so underwhelming and buggy.

Yeah, this feature is controlled by Cell Carriers not by device manufacturers.

Why is this so difficult to understand?

Yes, the availability of the feature set is controlled by the carrier - but if the carrier supports WiFi calling - as T-Mobile / MetroPCS does - it's whether the device hardware and/or software supports the feature that dictates usability. The Honor 8 does NOT support WiFi calling, because EMUI doesn't have the feature enabled. Period. Huawei has said as much.
Look, If Google trusts Huawei to make the Pixel for them (there are a lot of great similarities here), they've got a good thing going. But this is basic device functionality stuff. Are they worried that Pixel sales will be hurt by people buying the Honor 8 if it's fully featured? Hmmm. Wish I'd thought of that. Oh wait. I did.

The biggest issue is getting certified to use WiFi calling which is very hard for China based companies. Not impossible but to be honest I have not seen a single one get certified in the states yet.

My Le Pro3 from Le Eco has Wifi calling. It works better on this than it did the Nexus 5X.
Edit: You're right though. It costs companies time and money to implement it although I wish Huawei was more vocal on this. Their XDA partnership hasn't really impressed me yet.

There is alot of history there with this OEM. They for many years were banned in the US due to security issues and even to this day their devices are not allowed on some military bases. I thought about getting an honor 8 but will have to fill out tons of paperwork to see if I can get it approved due to some places I work.

Done
I just decided it was time to be done and returned the phone. Back to my GS6 after cooking the daylights out of it to remove any condensation from my little one dumping it in the dog drink. Oddly, I had a lot of strange crashes, and exorbitant date usage & GPS locks by Huawei specific apps. Might be on to something there.

No WiFi calling support on Honor 8
Hi Guys, I am T-mobile user and switch to Honor 8 from Motorola Nexus 6 about three months back and after use around week felt that this is the best Phone ever better than iPhone 6S. After few days used this phone found that it's doesn't have WiFi calling feature which does have on Nexus 6 because at my work place very barely T-mobile signals reach. Try to find some blogs and got that will get this feature in next update vEMUI 5.0 with Android 7.0 which i got recently few days back. but still this feature doesn't show up or working at all. now I am feeling like this is the wrong choise coz it not supporting WiFi calling which normally most smartphones does support.
Huwai Team please address this and let us know if any fix is available to overcome this.

T-Mobile wifi calling

With the latest announcement is there any chance people on prepaid getting some love? I'm on the $30, 100 minute, be nice to get wifi calling
From what I've read Wi-Fi calling is something that has to be built into the OS, framework, etc. It's also closed source, so it's pretty tricky to reverse engineer. Who knows though, it's not impossible!
I don't think they'd put it in the oneplus one. The new uncarrier features leans users to stick with t mobile branded phones. Phones that have monthly payments to t mobile. Even the nexus isn't supported

I'm hoping Voice over LTE gets enabled for the OPO.
edit: https://jira.cyanogenmod.org/browse/BACON-1197 upvote

[Q] US 32GB LTE- anyway yet to use it as a phone?

So has anyone figured out how to unlock the software restrictions to make the shield tablet LTE usable as a phone?
I want to buy it but I would like to have the option to use it as a phone in an emergency if something happens to my phone. I am an international buyer but i would have to import it to my country regardless what version I get since it is not sold here, and the EU version happens to be for 450 USD (I would rather get a controller or a cover with the extra cash) .

Yeah but the point of getting the LTE version is so you have data when you need it, so you might be able to rely on your data coverage to make calls. That and the boost in storage.

Meh, to me the LTE is useless if not to make calls with (in case something goes wrong with your phone) I mean there is free wifi everywhere I plan to take it with me... Airports, Hotels, most shopping malls, Coffee shops, friends house, the office... every single place I can think of that I would have my tablet with me in would have free wifi
The only thing thats going for it and I fully agree with you on that, is the extra storage... kind of a D move from Nvidia if you ask me... they should have and option for same storage for wifi version as well.

I have none !! I guess I got lucky cause I have none of the issues with battery, wifi, data, cracks, etc. that alot of those on here and the nvidia forum have complained about----> https://forums.geforce.com/default/board/150/shield-tablet/
I'm rooted and still on 4.4.2 and don't expect to go to 5.0 or 5.1 anytime soon. Too many horror stories I don't want to experiance. If and when the bugs are ironed out, maybe.
I've not heard of any success stories using the Shield Tablet as a device with LTE + Voice Calling.
I did have limited success when flashing the wx_un_mo 1.2 ROM.
I now have a working SIM from my provider, but have not yet tried re-flashing that ROM due to time and family constraints. I've been hoping to get back to it and try again.

I think most people were fine (in terms of software) until they installed Lollipop. I'd stay with 4.4.2. If the next update doesn't fix all my lagging, locking and rebooting, I'm either going to downgrade or get rid if this tablet. Too bad, because I bought both the cover and the controller. Although there is a rumor that Nvidia has already lined up the next version of the tablet with the new processor in it... could be tempting...

yup. some people may not LIKE that you can't root a phone, but the actual percentage of those that won't actually buy the phone for this reason is minuscule.
otherwise, the first time a phone manufacturer sees their sales actually explode after releasing unlooked bootloaders, they'd always unlock it, but that's simply not the case
Ok I think you're being quite short sighted here, allow me to explain a little.
People who root their phones, usually the same ones who mod and develop ROMs and love a tinker, generally speaking the techie in the family, the one who your family tends to turn to when they have an upgrade come around or need something fixing.
Those very same people are more than likely to recommend a phone which has the ability to root, bootloader unlock and modify than they are one which has a completely locked down eco system.
You can say what you like, you can say I'm full of it, but I've seen how people react to a company changing its principles in regards to bootloader unlocking, HTC did this once, they then reversed their decision after seeing an immediate decline in sales, not solely due to the device either, it was the people's influence which caused it, then after two not so great phones later, they were a struggling company, and make no mistake, HTC was a colossal company which was on the up and up, bare in mind they made a lot of what android is today.
Huawei are making the exact same mistake because they overlooked how important that 1% is and the influence that they have over the vast majority of other users who value their opinion and will commit to a purchase on their say so.
It doesn't matter if you believe me, it's just an observation I've witnessed when HTC made the same decision.
Sure they'll continue, they make other components as well as phones, in all fairness they could stop selling phones and still survive.
But for XDA, for development, for what we know today of Huawei devices? Lol If you think it's quiet here on the p20 pro forum, wait til you see the ghost town of a thread there will be for the p30 and pro, I doubt there will be a single ROM, no Dev would be dumb enough to buy it.

Huawei is targeting the Apple clientele. They couldn‘t care less about bootloader unlocking. Look at their advertising, their USP is design, camera, beautiful visuals. They don‘t sell to the tech nerd who wants to flash different software.

Damn.
You may still be able to do something , there was a guide on the above link posted by a user which can unlock the bootloader by all accounts.
This phone is quite a beast and there could and should be another way in the future.
Plus Huawei will probably reverse their decision, that's not confirmed by any means but I think they will.
Funky Huawei ( which is normally not what I'd recommend) will probably see a lot more action now that official unlocks are gone too.
Don't worry too much, if it's still possible someone will find out.

I'm shocked. I received my phone today and wanted to root it and now I read this.
Maybe you guys can help me understand a few things because I haven't tampered with any Android device since 2014.
- will I be fine with the standard pre-installed EMUI or am I missing some really cool and better custom OS when I can't unlock and root my device?
- I've used Xposed, AFWall+, TWRP and XPrivacy on my old phone - are there similar and equally safe tools for unrooted devices?
- How can I make backups without TWRP?
- are there any known workaround procedures known that would let me unlock the bootloader without that code from Huawei? Is it likely that there will be one?
Thanks

Same question here. I have my Twilight P20 Pro lying here, unused since release in fact (so way past the return window) and meant to give it to my wife, but only with Root Tools (Adaway, YT Vanced etc.)
I missed the window since I was traveling and support won't help me.
I get it, my fault for not doing it in time but what now? I wouldn't mind paying for it, as the only other option appears to be selling the device at a huge loss (I paid full retail) and finding a different phone altogether.

Mate 30 Pro and custom ROM's

Hey everyone
I just heard about Huawei been a bit more relaxed about rooting their Mate 30 Pro.
At First I was like that is AWESOME, the idea of been able to use the Mate 30 Pro with pixel experience (my favourite custom Rom) sounds amazing.... best Pixel stock experience on a beast like Mate 30 would be epic.
Then I found a strange taste in my mouth. There would still be some draw backs. Thought I would list some concerns and people could answer some of those concerns.
(Note....each concern/question has a solution or comment I think about the issue.....this is just my view and not to be taken as the only view)
1. Lack of full potential from cameras on the back?
I know some custom ROM camera apps are pretty good l, but to really experience the best from the camera's you would have to have some access to l the Mate 30 Pro stock camera app package to allow.
A thought I had is that Huawei could make a APK that's a bit like Goodlock and this app would allow you to download the stock camera app and other stock apps that people may use on their Huawei devices.
2. LTE and 5G??
I can remember using my Samsung S7E with Pixel Experience but one of the draw backs was that I could get 4G but I didn't get the extra features like LTE, wifi calling, HD call quality ect. If this remained the case then this would be a major draw back to a 2019 flagship device.
Maybe Huawei could needed coding and solutions directly to custom Rom developers....or allow then to be a open source so every ROM devloper had access these features.
3. General Custom ROM glitches and bugs
We are all used to our ROMs having strange behaviours every now and ad gain but do we want these bugs on our £800+ smartphone that we use eveqersryday.
This solution seems obvious Huawei need to work closely with custom Rom developers and helping them Iron these issues out.
4. Some apps dont work on custom Roms no matter what.
Back to my S7e I was able to almost all of the apps on my phone thanks to magisk manager but some apps still had issues. My samsung gear app would pair with my gearfit 2 no matter what. It downloaded but it would not find any devices. I found a fix but that caused my Google to stop working, so had to put it back. This happened with other apps as well.
The only solution I can think of is app developers would have to made aware that mate 30 users could be using rooted devices with Huawei's blessing and ensure there apps work on rooted versions of the phone.
5. Is Warranty still safe.
If Huawei are actually cool with us rooting our P30 Pro then they need to put their money where their mouth is and allow this activity with their manufactures warranty, private insurance companies need to follow suit as well.
Huawei could give us manufactures warranty but with the condition that if possible we have to flash the stock firmware of the device before sending it out.
That's it....that's just s few of my thoughts and possible solutions and would love to hear what you guys think and if you have any worries or questions of your own? Maybe if we make enough noise Huawei will notice us and take our ideas and answer our questions themselves.
(Make it easier....put which number comment your answering to so we all have a better idea what's going on)
Keep it friendly guys remember these are mine and others thoughts.... none of us are implying that these thoughts are right.
By the way... I am a Note 9 user but I am really excited of the potential of Huawei been the ultimate custom ROM brand.
Official Pixel Experience is pretty much nill on Huawei Devices. I see the Honor 10 has
again been dropped.
When the Ban is lifted Huawei will lock the bootloader again no doubt.
they have changed their mind, they will not unlock the BL for the Mate 30.
the only place this device will sell well is China, they are screwed pretty much everywhere else.
I just bought one in shanghai yesterday. Its a very neat and fast phone. especially the 40w charging is cool. you can watch percentages go up...
I asked for the 5G version but i was told its not availbale and should come November. I was wondering though if its already built in and just needs a software patch... like back then when Nvidia was reducing performace on Graphic cards by disabling shaders by firmware...

I would say most likely it works, as the China version covers pretty much all the network.
You could find out the specs from their website and check if the LTE bands covers T-Mobiles. It works on Bell's network though.

Thank you I think I'm convinced
I was trying to find a thread about the bootloader being unlocked on this phone and couldn't find one. I came across this video on YouTube where this guy turns on his phone and says his phone unlocked. He doesn't say how he did it but I'm thinking someone might want to contact him and ask him how he did it. About 2 minutes in he shows this

Most likely a review unit like others have had, release software dosnt have OEM unlock option in developers, if something comes of the int. Version we may be able to get rebranding but has yet to be seen
He commented about it being a devkit under the comment by Markus Haier here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5pxYxPSbl_s and said he was going to make a video on it but still nothing.
@o012 Well my P30-Pro (VOG-L09) has OEM unlocking under developer options but haven't tried unlocking.
All works in canada except certain banking apps google backup netflix google pay androis assistant needs to be rebooted everytime. Rest all works fine including google photo backup
Has anyone installed a custom ROM and TWRP to it yet.
Could a Gapps package help the issues? Gapps include all the google services and system setting to keep google stable and updating.
Think Gapps could be installed via the phones built in bootloader??.

T Mobile diagnostics spyware.

Has anyone figured out or come across a method of disabling the attached app? ADB method is futile
com.tmobile.echolocate
Only alternative that comes to mind is flashing the U1 firmware.
Same here on both the Note20 & Ultra versions.
I even tried to uninstall via ADB to no avail.
Seriously considering installing the US unlocked firmware.
using Insular app maybe
Freeze using SD Maid or Titanium?
@raul6
Not quite getting how Insular would help.
Sounds like a copy of the app is sandboxed, but, the other copy is still active.
If I'm missing something, please elaborate.
@elmor0
Not rooted, SD Maid/Titanium are of no help in this situation.
Most any other bloatware is able to be frozen/disabled via ADB, but, this one isn't, on an unrooted device.

Hello how are you? Long time no see, good seeing you on here.
Right back at ya.
Yeah,it's been a while, not on as much as w/previous phones (equally because the site changes a while back were buggy, better now, but, still getting used to the new look & feel).
New to the Note 20 Ultra,I probably wouldn't have gotten it if not for a generous Mother's Day trade-in value on the LG Wing ($800).
I've had the regular Note 20 for quite a while now. Too bad the RAM & Storage take a hit vs the Ultra, otherwise it's a solid phone.
From what I gather, there'll be a trade-off if flashing from T-Mo to US Unlocked firmware,in that eSIM is MIA on the latter.
I think I'm going to go ahead & do it anyway,eSIM isn't a must-have,but,it does suck that one has to choose & make a compromise.
I saw that you came from the S21 Ultra........ I probably would have got that, but, the bulk of a case that can hold an S-Pen was a deal breaker. Otherwise,I'm guessing the overall performance is noticeably better than the Note 20 Ultra.
Package Disabler... it gets the AT&T update parasite.
@blackhawk
Which one are you using?
If from the Google Play Store, can you post the link?
I'm currently using the PC tool ADB App Control. It's an awesome tool, but, neither it nor regular ADB commands are working in removing the T-Mobile Diagnostic Tool app.

This is the only one that consistently works year after year.
This recent version doesn't list Google play Services so I have to manually disable it in apps, WTF? It still lists and blocks AT&T updates from running though. It's a yearly subscription now and cloud based however once it's installed you can firewall block it (which I do) with no harm.

The only NON-root solution that let’s you disable any unwanted packages that come pre-installed / installed with your phone / tablet.

You can also call the carrier and have (demand) them to disable it on their end. Did that with AT&T but if you get another device you'll need to do it again. It took some head banging to find an advance tech there to do it.

Good seeing you back. In regards to the S21U, I ordered one in 256GB from Samsung direct, had an issue and sent it back the next day, the screen on the particular one I had, had severe color shift even at a slightest angle. I just couldn't live with that. So now I'm back again in the Note 20U again, this time a mystic black TMO model. Previous was bronze and before that it was a white dual sim south American model and a few other devices in between.
I think I'm going to the same, and flash U1. There was also a lot of Sprint apps on it also.
@Limeybastard
How ya liking the Sprint-TMo merger so far?
My phone hopping has slowed down somewhat, phones are getting too pricey & the pace of innovation has slowed a bit vs 2-3 yrs ago. 5G compatibility w/the imports is my biggest deterrent ,too bad,lot of cool devices from Xiaomi/Vivo/OPPO,etc.......
Definitely interested in going to US unlocked firmware, but,I came across a how-to thread here that seems to indicate swapping from U1 to carrier & vice-versa on BL2 is broke.

In my neck of the woods I have seen some slight improvement in 4G LTE speeds, I can also get a 5G signal which is unfortunately slower than LTE for me, so I just keep mine set to LTE 3g 2g etc mode.
The lack of carrier aggregation was my biggest turn off in regards to non USA devices. Lack of 5G not so much of a concern.
Unfortunately I updated mine to BL2 so if that's the case then we'll have to wait until U1 is available to us. Oh well. ..

It's a VPN based firewall.
It uses almost no battery... is there something I missed?

Hang on a minute as my memory is getting awful with age, we're on bootloader 2 correct ? If memory serves me correctly we can't flash to U1 firmware bootloader version 1? But I think there is U1 firmware on bootloader version 2 available now.

I'm afraid you're correct. They want to lock you in to Android's flat spin to hell.
The AT&T 4G stock Note 10+/Pie performs well after some... adjustments
That and maybe the Note 20U are the only Samsung's I would consider as Samsung's latter offerings are weak. Android 11 is a disaster and 10 is probably a downgrade from Pie.
Android is on track to be a flaming wreck if Gookill can't pull out of the flat spin it put its self in.
All in all I'm considering buying another Note 10+ 512gb 4G mostly for the extra ram. The 20U has faster memory/cpu but is handicapped by Q.
Slim pickens in my opinion... the N10+ is fast with a gorgeous display. It lacks the rounded corners displays which I loathe, being a CRT raised child The only downside to the perfectly square corners is the need for a good case. These corner hitting Notes will get destroyed without one.

I've been running it for about 6 months. It's always on as it cuts my battery usage by blocking apps like Android Services from constantly polling the internet. Accubattery is also a habitual offender.
It's been a valuable tool in tracking down battery hogs and data mining apps. I have yet to see any misbehavior from it. A near perfect app.
It's valuble logging feature doesn't work on Q and and above I been told. Thanks Gookill...

You need to get a N20U, it'll all be good after a few tweaks. Try it , you'll thank me later.
