Any movers from lg g5 to pixel? - Google Pixel Questions & Answers

Self explanatory. What are your impressions?

I've had the G5 within the last 3 months. I didn't go directly from it to the pixel but, I can compare.
I loved my G5. But the development for my model was non existent. I need root and custom Roms.
Size is similar, I like that. The camera in my opinion is comparable, however the pixel outshines it in low light and speed.
The pixel is faster in daily use I find. LG does a good job of optimizing it's skin but it could use some work. I miss the quick battery change ability, but I can live without it as long as I can play. (Roms) I miss the carrier specific stuff VoLTE, wifi calling etc. But that is to be expected going to a pixel. Unless you're on select US carriers.
Choosing a device really comes down to personal preference. Go and play with them compare them side by side. Only you are the best judge of what you like.

The only thing I miss about the G5 was the always on display.. very hard feature to sacrifice!

How much slower does it charge?

To be honest I never charged the G5 directly as I always had a separate battery charger. The charger and phone charge at different rates, so I can't comment on that. I can say that for my needs the Pixel charges fast enough.

How well does ambient display work? Is it a good alternative to the AOD?

First Impressions: New V10 coming from Nexus 6 (VZW)

My first thoughts after having V10 for couple of hours (most in comparison to Nexus 6, but not all). I didn't need a new phone, but just get bored after a while and upgrade fairly often:
- I like the feel, width is nice and feels noticeably smaller in hand. Don't notice the extra few grams weight and feels balanced in my hand. Like the grippy feel and will probably go without case a while because of "durability". That in itself will make all the difference in size anyway as I used an Incipio case on N6. Not as much to protect it, but I like to set my phone on center console of F150 as I drive, and need a grippy back to keep it from sliding off when stopping/accelerating quickly...V10 fits that need without case and N6 had too slick of a back. The above size comparison is done without case on N6 though.
- Screen not as bright as N6 at comparable settings (40%) sitting in my office. Gonna have to see about that one as I don't want to sacrifice battery too much to get brightness level I like. I really like how the screen looks though. I get around the big icon thing by using Apex so no that's not even an issue.
- Phone is every bit as much, if not more snappy than N6, which is rooted on Marshmallow using beans Pure nexus rom. That gave me great battery life, soo I will update my battery life after a couple of days with this phone.
- Call quality is amazing compared to N6. Not sure if HD/call over VoLTE is reason why or not...I had it disabled on N6 because I couldn't get good call quality in my office due to tower location. Which leads me to this, V10 has much better 4G/LTE signal on VZW than my N6, at least sitting in my office where I was on fringe before, with data and calls hit or miss. Sucky thing about N6 was it would get just enough signal to not switch to 3G, will be interesting to see how that works on V10.
- Plugging in the phone gives me a "fast-charging" notification but doesn't seem to charge as fast as N6, by a decent margin...will have to do a real time comparison to be sure.
- Double tap to wake is faster on V10.
- 2nd screen seems useful to me, either for contacts or favorite apps, as I like to keep my home screen clutter at a minimum. Will see which one makes the grade permanently, hopefully no butt-dialing.
- Camera is pretty nice but I'm not much of a photo buff, but few I have taken around office and outside this afternoon look pretty darn nice.
- Speaker is louder than my N6 for incoming ring tones but kind of tinny. Haven't played music or used speaker phone yet.
- Overall, I like the phone a lot after playing around for a couple of hours, but will be doing a lot more fiddling over the next few days and hope to update this post accordingly.

The LG v10 like the LG G4, disables quick charge when you have the main screen on. Speculation is to save the battery from the added heat lowering it's life expectancy.
The v10 charges slightly faster (2800mA) than the G4 (2200mA) in quick charge mode, and slightly slower than the Moto Nexus 6 (3200mA) in my experiences.
EDIT: Below I included screenshots today while charging using a Tronsmart car charger. 2840mA screen off, 980mA and dropping while screen on.
I use my Samsung adaptive quick charger because it charges noticeably faster than the provided LG quick charger.

I came from the N6. That being said, I have come from a long line of Nexus phones, since the N4, actually. But since this isn't offered through the carriers, I figured I'd try something new. Loving it. Google is offering many way to give a stock experience these days. The launcher and most apps through the play store I mean.
Thanks, does the screen have to be turned to full brightness to compare and operate outside? That's my only fear

I too came from the n6 to the v10 and I have say that v10 is easier to see in the sun without having to turn brightness all the way up.:good:
I guess many of us were getting bored off our Nexus 6's bc I too am a convert to the V10. Most of the pros of the LG V10 were cons of the Nexus 6 and the only thing I miss so far was the dual front facing speakers.
I had an HTC One M7 before the Nexus 6 and I loved that phone. The V10 is winning me over similarly as well. Stock Android is overrated if the manufacturer gets it mostly right and packs in this many features.

LG V30 or S8+ ?

Long story short, my classic Nexus 6P has been dying for a few months, battery drains, random reboots, super low volume on speakers. I have wiped the phone tried different ROM's and back to stock, still same thing. Don't get me started on the Pixel 2 XL for almost $1,000. It's really a Nexus 8P that should be selling for $599, but since it's a "Pixel" they wanna charge us more now. No thank you.
I'm on T-Mobile
I picked up the LG V30 last week, and it is a great phone, but no root ( I knew that going in ) And zero good themes ( no offense ) On my Nexus 6P I ran the Swift Dark theme for years, and got so used to it and fell in love with it, it's hard going on the V30 without that theme, and the themes available are basic and don't do Google apps, or notifications, etc... I know Samsung has a way deeper theming system, and just tons of themes available. And most important Substratum is active for the S8 / Note 8, which is a BIG DEAL.
Is the SD835 S8+ as smooth and lag free as the V30 ? I hear that Lagwiz is still evident on the 2017 Galaxy phones ? Would a S8+ be better than the V30 ? I want the same great battery life as the V30, and I need deep dark themes system wide applied to everything.
How about package disablers ? I did that with my V30 and it made a huge difference in battery life, and stopping bloatware and unwanted apps from running in the background.
Thanks, and looking forward to the responses.

Seems the S8+ section on XDA is a ghost town ? Did everyone move on to newer phones since release ?

Well i have 0 experience with LG. You need to go to the samsung store and LG store and compare those 2 phones by yourself. In hand experience is away different experience than specs and reviews. I bought the s8 plus exynos ver n may i never had issues with the phone and never thought about exchanging it. This phone is a beast has a beautiful design and last all day long with a single charge.
Sent from my SM-G955F using Tapatalk
I also have the Verizon version of the S8+ and love it. I get all day battery and no lag for me at all. I also think the design is awesome. My wife has the V20 which is an awesome phone also, so I imagine the V30 is also a good choice. I picked up the S8+ because it was the best deal at the time and have no regrets at all. Good Luck
this is my opinion but phones are reaching the point that all of them will provide a smooth experience for normal usage. I used to get rid of the extras to make my phone run faster and smoother, but now the chip is even more than what I need for my usage, those extra power can be used to provide a better UI (theme, live wallpaper and such). So I went with the one that will receive most attention in custom rom (there are great roms that make the phones even smoother than it already is and lasts longer, I use renovate ice and notorious kernel) and theme to suit my needs (and be able to change it if I want).
My gf got the V30 because she's an audiophile (the dac is simply amazing) but other than that, she likes my s8+ more. And I love my s8+. these are my experience so far anyway.
Both is amazing. Good luck
I'd personally never get an LG. They have a history of bad motherboards, prone to break. Also in MHO, they just copy Samsung, design wise. LG wants hard to make flagships, but they are the ACER of mobile phones, they just don't know it yet. I'd take S8/Note 8 anyday over any LG.

Jump from V30+ to Op6?

Okay guys am a bit torn. I've an LG V30+ and am thinking of switching to the Op6. I mainly use the cell for surfing the net and an occasional casual gameplay. Listening to music is awesome in the V30 but the camera leaves something to be desired. The output is bland.
And LGs update sucks. Still stuck in 7.1.2
Should I jump the gun?

Sure, sounds like you want this. I'd just sell the v30+ on Swappa and use that money to pay off most of the op6.
Done. Switched.
Lol
I want to switch to lg v30+
I had lg v30+ weeks back. Returned it and bought OnePlus 6. For the reasons like stock OS,6gig ram and mainly for the developer support op6 will have like bootloader unlocking, roms. Because the v30+ variant which i bought is officially not supporting bootloader unlocking itself.
While at the same time, i preferred few things in lg over op6.
Design, looks, weight, always on display, hdr display quality, wide angle camera, and also notch less design.
Things i didn't feel change in both are performance, multitasking, battery.
I went from V30 (no plus) to Op6. Very happy with Op6 so far. Last V30 update broke wifi for me, so I agree with poor update statements.
The only thing I miss is that the fingerprint sensor is also the power button. Unit is on and unlocked in one step.
Face unlock is working pretty good, but then again I'm one ugly s.o.b. And easy to recognize :silly:
The V30+ 2as awesome. The looks, the cameras, esp. the sound quality on my Hd600s was mind boggling.
But am a flashaholic and the V30+ didn't even allow unlocking of bootloaders. Still I did some modding like complete full screen with gesture navigation. Naptime for saving battery and got the GCam.
Was a good phone, but I need the liberty of android to truly enjoy Android. If I was to be tied so tightly, I'd rather take an iPhone 8. My whole family is tied to iPhone ecosystem. Am the odd duck who swears by Android. ?
I have a V30+ and put an order for the 6 over the weekend, pretty impulsively, still not entirely convinced it was the right move. Aside from the guilt associated with this being the 5th phone that I'm paying full price or more for (like paying premium to purchase prior to wide availability) in about 2.5 years:
- I don't take pictures often at all so I don't really care about cameras, but when I do, I found wide-angle to be super convenient, so that'll be missed.
- Yes I still have a headphone jack but definitely going to miss the quad DAC.
- Battery life and screen on time on the V30 was by far the best I've ever had. I'll have to see how OP6 holds up, but anything less would be tough to get used to.
- I would've missed wireless charging...except I never used it with the V30 (unlike my previous phones which supported it), because of the battery lasting all day.
- I've read a few complaints about the vibration motor being bad. They were very good in my last couple of phones, so I'm a bit concerned here.
- Always on display, for the time/battery/notification information being constantly available without any user input or action
- 1440P. Honestly I find the quality of the panel to be much more important than the resolution but would've preferred paying a bit more for the extra pixels.
- Waterproofing, although I recently chipped the corner so I don't know if it would still hold up. Definitely not something I'd risk anyway so not much lost there.
But still, considered the following (for all of 10 minutes before buying..):
- The near stock Android. I was pleasantly surprised at my V30's performance and lack of lag even after 6 months of use, considering the UI is on the heavier side. Buuut can't beat Nexus/pixel/op level of fluidity.
- Faster updates. Although I imported my V30 from Korea because I didn't want to wait for North American release, and updates were actually pretty damn fast as a result. I don't see this continuing now that the G7 is out and V35 due out soon.
- 8 GB RAM vs. 6 GB.
- Going from the Mi Mix (which was full of its own issues) to the V30 I really didn't like coming back to the top bezel. While a notch is hardly the ideal solution for me, maybe it could be a decent compromise (really hoping the upcoming Vivo Apex is trash...otherwise I may be in for further trouble)
- Gesture control. Opinions seem to be fairly mixed on this. But I'm already using a 3rd party gesture control app on my V30 with the navbar hidden, so looking forward to using something similar baked into the OS. I don't like Android P's implementation of it (isn't the whole purpose so you can get rid of the navbar and more of the screen can be opened up for other use?) so I'm hoping OP6 will stick to its current implementation or at least provide the choice to keep it when P is rolled out (probably not)
- No always on display, but def like how the ambient display handles incoming notifications.
And I'm pretty sure the entire point of this post was me trying to justify another impulsive purchase lol. But maybe it'll help someone.

Looking into buying phone... need advice

Does this phone work well with US carriers? Mainly ATT? And how does everyone like the device? I'm coming from the essential phone ph-1 and would love to hear input on the 7 pro.
Thanks!
Been using this phone on AT&T (Boston area) since last June and it works flawlessly. Just put my SIM in, and it worked without a hitch. Pretty much the same experience with my last phone, which was the OnePlus 3T, which I had for 2 years.
7 Pro is a great phone. Really fast and smooth with the (at the time it was released) top of the line Snapdragon processor and 90 Hz screen. You get flagship performance for a much lower price than a Samsung or iPhone (okay, XDA users aren't really the type to buy iPhones - but you see where I'm coming from). The camera on those other phones might be a bit better. But really, you're getting 95% of the phone quality for a much lower price.
Just as important, the OS is really clean. Close to a stock Android feel, with a few (mostly useful and inobtrusive) added features. OP devices tend to be root friendly, and enjoy great developer and community support here on XDA.
One quibble is the curved screen edges. More flash than function. I feel like OnePlus was trying to make it look like the Samsung screens. But it occasionally makes it difficult and awkward to tap on things near the screen edge. It's a pretty minor thing. But enough to make me wish the phone had a flat screen, instead of curved edges.
Another minor comment (can't even call it a quibble really) is the pop-up selfie camera. It does allow the screen to be completely without any camera notch or cut-out. But some folks have been concerned about long term durability. Unless you are taking tons of selfies, I don't see it as much of any issue. Although if you use face unlock (which I do), you do have to wait for it to pop up and down. It happens pretty fast. But face unlock takes maybe a second (perhaps less) longer than my old 3T due to this (since that phone didn't have to pop a camera up). If you use the fingerprint unlock, this isn't a thing at all, of course. And the pop-up camera does make for a good party gimmick!

This phone works fine
I'm using a OnePlus 7 pro Tmobile brand
I used a international rom which allows 2 Sim cards and I believe unlocks it to be used with other carriers
The device is very snappy, before the international rom flash it would boot in like 2 seconds
After I unlocked it the stupid integrity warning slows down the boot by like 10-30 seconds
The phone has one of the best benchmarks for any phone if not the best still.
Camera pop up is pretty fast and snappy
Updates were frequent until all the fuss about cornavirus started.
Issues - currently blackscreen when opening several game applications including
Clash of clans
Old school runescape
Cod mobile
And others.
But on earlier versions it was fine.
Other complaints that shouldn't effect much on the use of the phone.
System is locked making debloat ING harder then needs to be (Google apps are trash 99% of the time)
Custom Rom updates seem to be slow
Magisk roms seem to not always work
Wiping system makes the entire phone useless until you use the msm tool to re-upload your phones software
Could have Alot more tweaks and functionality if OnePlus added them (navigation bar specifically is limited, I don't use recent button I use it as a menu button)
Bloatware by Google. (I'd prefer to install what I want not be forced to use what they implement)
Overall I give this phone a 8/10 rating.
Would be 10/10 if they actually lived by their motto.
Its Alot to read but worth the time. (unless I don't make any sense then sorry)
I'm using my US unlocked model with Visible and Google fi. I was using VZW until I changed to Visible. No problems.

I have the 7 Pro 5G, running on Sprint, bootloader unlocked and sim unlocked, definitely the best phone I've ever owned, I came from the LG V40 immediately prior, and the Pixel XL series before that, I also did breifly own the Essential phone,
-the 90Hz display is downright the absolute best screen I've ever had on any phone ever.
-256 gigabytes of storage is more than enough for me
-I have yet to encounter any tasks that caused any small amount of lag even.
-the cameras arent amazing, but they're decent, better than the essential.
-the pop up camera feature definitely is better than a notch and it's also just fun to watch it go up and down.
Overall this phone is 10/10, Just wish they cared more about the 5G variants and updated them faster...

A potential replacement phone

Good Morning all,
Hopefully ive placed this question in the right location. I`ve been a avid user of the Google Pixel 3 XL for several years now having moved from the Samsung Note 8. I`ve recently had the opportunity to move over to a Samsung Note 10 + Exynos (Australia) and started the Smart Switch copy process as a test before possibly moving over to the device as a daily driver. Upon completing the copy process and testing Samsungs OneUi for a few hours i found myself installing Nova and finding a user created Pixel Nova backup and trying to make the Note10 looks as identical to the Pixel 3 as i could. Previously on i think it was Oreo on the Note8 i just used the device but this Samsung OneUi i dont like at all. I find that the Ui just isnt what up to my personal liking. In saying that when an alternative launcher like Nova is used i lose access to swipe gestures as part of Android10 which ive become accustomed to on my Pixel3. The reason im on the fence is as part of my job im required a times to be onsite at other locations for work consistently on the phone for my 8 -10 hour shift depending on the work where i have noticed the Pixel3 battery just cant cope with my day to day demands without me need to hook up a battery backup to charge the device.
I guess i just am trying to weigh up the pros and cons. From what ive seen the Note10+ has a huge power gain and battery life and performance than the Pixel3 but then Samsung from past experience take quite a long time to release Os and security updates whereas the pixel3 gets them when they are released.
I love that the pixel doesnt come with any bloatware and also prefer the google messages and phone app over Samsungs as i can hook connect message to my work WebGUI while im at my desk which makes it easier to respond to text`s in my work day, Also the Pixel3 camera is amazing and appears to trump the Note10+ for taking photos which i do a lot of for work and personal. Also the Pixel3 fingerprint reader is so much more faster than the ultrasonic in the Note10.
I`ve become so dependent on the google suite of apps referring to Google Phone,Messages,Photos,Calendar,Gmail,Chrome,Assistant,AOD & Home Screen widget to name a few.
As stupid as i sounds i`m trying to find some justifiable reason to move to the Note10 over the Pixel outside of the battery capacity between the 2 as well as the cameras.
Does anyone have any input on how the Note10+ would benefit me over the Pixel3?
Regards
Kornster

Hi,
I totally understand you, Google delivers, in my opinion, the best User Experience. Despite its devices not being racecars, we still want to buy them for the UI.
Here are all the pros for the Note 10+:
Better CPU, more RAM ---> Smoother experience
More storage, faster (UFS 3.0) ---> Fast file transfer+ no struggles with pics
Quick Charge ---> Phone Charge faster
In display fingerprint ---> Best thing
Gorilla glass 6 (vs 5 for the Pixel)
Plus you get a freaking stylus man!
So the overall experience will most likely be better, smoother and faster (for charging, gaming, taking photos and storing them)
Also, try to see if you can get a OnePlus phone. It has all the pros mentioned above plus it has almost no bloatware (only uninstallable preinstalled apps like FB or Netflix) and the UI is close to stock. You get also a lot of customization.
But to me, the Pixel UI is above OxygenOS (OnePlus UI)
Have a good day
Hi Raiz,
Well i took the plunge for a month and have moved back to the Pixel 3 XL. The Note 10+ itself is aesthetically pleasing to hold and touch. But there`s just something about the Samsung experience that irks me the wrong way. The biggest issue i had was the under screen fingerprint reader, It was IMO the worst experience, 9 out 10 times not working at all requiring me to use my pin code to unlock the phone. I recorded my fingerprints in all different angles to cover everything but more often that not it just didnt work. Samsung Dex was ok but certainly no where near a usable point. Running Windows 10 i can tie the My Phone app straight into the Pixel/Samsung and it worked well, even with the latest update. I never once used the stylus for what it could be used for, only a few times using it for the wireless photo taking. The camera on the Samsung is ok but no where near where the Pixel camera. The Google default apps are for me a lot more user friendly than the Samsung one. Samsung's OneUI although aesthetically pleasing didn't cut it for me, oversized icons and restrictions in places i thought wouldn't be, it felt like i was using an Apple device at times. I needed to use OneUI due to gestures only working with OneUi and not an alternative launcher like Nova. Having the now playing on the lock screen is something i always used, As someone who loves music hearing something and then just looking at the Pixel and it showing what was playing was always a plus. The AOD on the Pixel was better with calendar entries showing up on AOD. Turning the Pixel over the mute was sorely missed especially when i could be working and avoiding phone distractions and just turn the phone over and not be annoyed. There`s so many more things i could report on and im not bagging out the Note10+. Just come to the conclusion that having a Note8 then Pixel 3 XL and moving to the Note10+ that there`s just too many things on the Pixel that are sorely missed and i had to revert.
The biggest issue on the Pixel is the abysmal battery and how long it lasts and it`s something i`ll just have to deal with.

Hi,
Nice to hear from you .
I'm sorry that you bought something that didn't pleased you. Some people aren't bothered at all by all the restrictions and all the stuff you said above, but IMO you made the right decision. Samsung are all about making you buy, from the in-OS ads to the short support (which has been a bit lengthened recently). But I think once you get a taste of what Google has to offer with its own OS, you can't get back to the previous experience and don't feel a downgrade.
It's all specs and power now, but I think that if UI, support and features aren't here, your phone won't be good. If I knew that the Pixel 5 would have a battery this large (rumored at 4000 mhA), I would've waited before buying my OP8.
I hope you still enjoy your Pixel 3 tho, and I hope it will last
Have a great day
