Hey guys,
Tried searching for this, but nada.
Anyone else having issues with your phone being idle but powered on ans upon bringing on the screen you receive a google talk notification that's old? Is been happening to me lately, and I can't tell if it's the phone or the fact that my desktop version is intercepting the message and preventing the phone notification.
I'm tempted to no longer use the desktop built in gmail version, but I wanted to see if others are having similar issues.

Can't guarantee this, but I have a feeling it may have something to do with the phone letting the Google talk process close when the phone is in it's sleep state. I've noted that I keep having to re sign in to gtalk when I wake up my phone and suspect that it is an issue with the horrible multitasking that HTC has bundled into sense 4.0.
I assume both of you also get delayed notifications with push email using the native Gmail app? I also frequently get logged out of Google Talk when I put the phone in standby mode. When I am logged out of Google Talk, my push emails are delayed in the Gmail app until I log back into Google Talk.
So it seems to be some problem of getting disconnected from google services when the phone is asleep.
I don't think i've been getting delayed notifications, but I do notice that my chat gets out of order a lot. My replies will be above whoever is talking to me no matter what order each was sent in.
Almost every phone that comes out gets a google talk going eventually so there is lots out there, but each phone has it's own issues. Here is a thread that was pretty good from the Galaxy Nexus Forums.

With the HOX I have had issues with Google Talk not working great when the wifi is dropping, so this might be part of the wifi issue that pretty much everybody is having with this phone. The wifi stays connected but seems to go to sleep so your phone only gets the notification once it is woken up. Try turning off the wifi and seeing if you have the same problem.
As for Google Talk, there are some oddities that go along with using it on multiple devices. Here is some stuff I figured out playing around with it on multiple devices and computers at the same time. (I posted this in the GN forums as well)
"Google Talk is my main means of communication it seems so I have played with it a lot. Here are my observations.
1. To keep it "up" all the time in the Talk App hit the menu button (three dots now) >settings>uncheck automatic away status. Also make sure your phone has automatic syncing turned on for your gmail account: Setting>Accounts and Sync>ON (for your chat gmail address anyway). Additionally make sure your mobile data is turned on if you are ever off wifi: Settings>More>Mobile networks>Data Enabled (checked to turn on)
2. You can have up to 6 devices linked to your talk account at once, after that they just stop working.
3. When you receive a IM it appears on both your phone and your gmail account. If you start typing on the gmail account (or G+) it hijacks the whole session and you phone no longer gets the notifications, but the conversation still shows up on the chat window on the phone. When you are done with the IM session make sure you close the window on gmail (or G+) and send one last message from your phone or tablet to take the session back over, if you don't your phone will not receive future chat notifications. You can also just log out of your gmail/G+ session and it will automatically return everything to your phone/tablet but who ever does that?
4. To figure out how it all worked and tinker with it I use both of my gmail accounts and chat back and forth with them. You can do it from separate browsers or just open an incognito window in Chrome and log into your other gmail account. I would recommend this so you can see all of this stuff in practice.

Gtalk and gmail delays
Hi all,
I have performed tests and discovered that if i disable WiFI and only use the phone's data connection "4g" or LTE that i receive all my messages with no problem even when the phone locks/goes to sleep. However if i leave wifi turned on, within 5-10 seconds i stop receiving them and will only receive them when i wake up the phone/unlock or wait for the delay which can be anywhere from 5-15 mins.
Trying to figure out a way to by pass this, but can't seem to figure it out. I don't want to keep my wifi off when i'm at work or home so i don't use data as i have 3GB and not unlimited so it kind of sucks that i have to keep wifi off for now. Any thoughts/ideas would be great, thanks.

This. I have issues with timely/accurate reception of notifications from GV. I only use my account for voicemail, but typically I only get voicemail notifications if I open the actual application (which I do because my gmail account receives an email notification now, as well). Sometimes I notice GV as a running task, but often times not, so to me it seems that (possibly) multitasking or some other form of process management in ICS or Sense is not prioritizing the GV process and it's associated actions. I dont mind the aggressive multitasking, but it would be nice to have the option of protecting some processes, such as GV.
I removed google + app completely with titanium backup, and the problem is gone., I get the messages immediately

I'm running the latest Viper, I've never had an issue receiving or sending msgs. The only time the phone won't alert me is if I am actively typing in the browser window.
I'll note though that I never have wifi on, it's always on the mobile network.

I tried everything not even this works for me
Same problem, screen off - phone disconnects, unlock the phone - messages start to appear
Same problem on 2 different phones and 2 different numbers
I don't use G Talk, but I see the same thing with G Voice. I almost never get voicemail notifications on my HOX (they show up instantly on my old GNex). I blame Sense (for this and other things).
Same problem, but with Nexus 4 when I am on WiFi. With data connection, it works without problems.
I have a Note 4 with Smart Lock. I wanted to set it up so that my watch can keep my phone from locking. I added the device to SmartLock successfully. Even if my watch is sitting right next to the phone, it is not unlocking it. I use a PIN. Is there anything else that I need to do, or is this just not going to work.

I was looking for an answer to that too. I tried and it did not work at all.
I use tasker for lots of things, but I could never get it working with this. I have a task set up to unlock the phone if the bluetooth is connected to the Gear S2. Even when my connection is just fine, tasker doesn't see the connection and never unlocks the phone.
I use Gear s2 from Tmobile with my Note 4 with no problems. When locked I use patern not pin if that makes any difference. Running lollipop 5.1.1 , no root, latest gear manager from play store.
It is added to my trusted devices
This might be a misunderstanding on my part about how this is supposed to work. I have a PIN set up, and when I have my watch connected, it doesn't require the PIN. It just puts up the screen that I have to swipe. I expected that it wouldn't put up the swipe screen at all. I don't want it to, but can't find a way around it. I tried setting up tasker to disable the lock, but it didn't work. Apparently tasker doesn't know when the watch is connected. It does work for my bt headset.
I don't think it can be done. It looks like smart lock removes requirement for any kind password but doesn't remove screen lock altogether.

If you have one of those flip cases, it does unlock automatically. Other than that, I don't know a way around it.

Same issue here. Guessing a 2 part app (specific to s2 and android) might be able to solve the problem. The s2 app would communicate with the android app (not sure if background communication is possible for s2 apps though). Upon a cut in connection, the android app would trigger the lockscreen.
Thoughts?

I've never understood the need for that. When I don't have security on my phone, I have always just shut it off. An extra swipe accomplishes nothing.
Before the gear, I was using tasker to unlock my phone when connected to my wifi and when my bluetooth headset was on. I'd carry it with me, turned on, and my phone would not lock at all. It was flawless. Never saw the lock screen and never had to enter my PIN.
I might just go back to that, as the extra screen is really annoying and serves no purpose. I just have to remember to always have my BT headset turned on and on me. I always have my watch, but always seem to forget the headset.
I wish I knew why tasker doesn't recognize the the connection to the watch. My settings clearly show that the phone is connected to the watch, so it should recognize the connection, but doesn't. I don't know how much support tasker is getting any longer. I saw something about the developer having to take a break because of medical issues. There are now many other automation apps out there. Maybe I'll give some of them a try and see if one of them will accomplish what I am able to accomplish with tasker and my wifi/bluetooth headset.
When I add the watch to SmartLock, I get the following message:
Smart Lock can't detect the security features of this device. To help protect your phone, Gear S2 (393A) will only be able to keep your phone unlocked once it's already unlocked by you. Your Gear S2 (393A) can keep your phone unlocked when it's nearby, even if someone else is holding it.
Not sure what that means or what it does to the unlocking feature.
I don't know much about tasker but one time I played with tasker plugin called trigger. Maybe that can be help for you. It is possible that tasker looking for certain Bluetooth profiles being active and since gear s2 has no speaker there is not headset or headphone profile. On my gear s2 3g Bluetooth shows call audio profile.
I was looking to get an S3. What I wanted to know is can the watch be connected to the app store and download faces/apps without a phone either over wifi or if an LTE version over the network? Such as if you get a tablet, you can use it fine with just a wifi connection, you don't need to pair those to a phone. I ask because for one I don't have the latest phone of the month (Sammy seems to snub those with phone models older than a year - slight exaggeration but not much). The other thing is that I want to be able to leave the phone home at times and still be able to browse for watch faces etc over wifi.
I really don't care about notifications or email (I don't get that many) nor to I want to pay for things with the watch. When I really need to do those things I don't find using the phone that much work. I just want the watch to use as a watch, and have some helpful apps to use when not carrying my phone, is it possible?
Out the box, the Gear S3 can be setup and used by itself, without ever connecting to a smartphone. I call this independent mode. It can make and receive phone calls and messages, tell time, date, and weather, be an alarm clock, set reminders, and monitor fitness (i.e. sleep, HR, steps). I operated this way for a couple of weeks after getting the watch.
Additional functionality is gained if you have a phone (tablets won't work) that is capable of running Gear Manager. This is necessary if you want to install and apps including watchfaces. The watch doesn't need to be constantly connected to the phone. There are two ways additional ways to leave the phone behind. In standalone mode, the watch is disconnected from the phone, but downloaded apps remain available. In remote connect mode, the phone communicates with the watch via cellular network, allowing notifications to pass through.
I use the S3 as my primary phone. I have a cheap Samsung phone that's used exclusively for the setup and management of the watch. I use a tablet for tasks (ie. content creation, computing, media consumption) that require a larger screen.

So unlike a tablet Samsung locks you out of the app store on the actual watch even if LTE if you don't have a phone connected? That seems kind of dumb and limiting especially since the supported phone list is so small. Is it just because browsing apps on the watch is too difficult maybe?
I wonder if this will change, I can get apps on a tablet through wifi I don't see why not with the watch. This watch seems like a mini tablet that tells time.

Are you sure my friend that it can make and receive calls and send messages without it being connected to the phone via bluetooth??i got mine s3 a week ago...i love it really, but it doesn't do these things when not connected ro the phone (s6 edge plus)...
Just saw, i have the bluetooth s3 frontier version and not the LTE version...so i guess that's why it has to be connected to the phone via bluetooth...
My only problem is that i can not connect to my phone via wi-fi...whenever i activate this option on my phone, it crashes with the message gear S pluggin has stopped working...any clues ?

Are these stand alone functions also available if you have the wifi version and no LTE?
I don't have any experience with the S3 BT model. I can only speak to the capability of the Frontier LTE. This watch is a phone. It has functionality that's probably comparable to a basic flip phone. It comes preloaded with apps for phone, messaging, contacts, S Health, weather, reminders, and a few others. When the eSIM is activated, it can perform tasks associated with these apps immediately upon startup. No phone is required.
When the watch is setup via Gear Manager, it installs software that enables additional apps to be installed and gains greater functionality. Most of which remains even when the watch is disconnected from the phone.
Gear Manger compatibility isn't limited to Samsung phones, it can be installed many Android phones, but not tablets. Not even Samsung tablets.

If the watch is basically a phone then why couldn't I directly install apps/faces etc from the watch? It doesn't make much sense to me. If I install apps on a phone I do't need another phone to install things on the first one. It seems like Samsung is just too lazy to make an app on the watch to do it, or they want everyone to have to buy a new phone to use the watch (and hopefully a big percentage will buy a Samsung phone wink wink).
I wonder what the free space on the watch memory/storage is between the BT and LTE versons? If the LTE has more stuff installed I wonder if user memory is less?
I'm one of the few who use an S3 as my primary phone. I too wish that the S3 was a more independent device. But as it stands right now, it's the most capable smartwatch available (excluding watches running full Android made by a few small manufacturers). I hope that it paves the way for more standalone offerings by Apple and Android Wear watch makers.

Since the eSIM is provisioned via programming, Cricket and MVNOs don't have the system to do it. So that's a no go.
Theoretically, T-Mobile should be able to do it because they also sell the watch. The difficulty is finding an employee who knows how to do it, since the IMEI won't be in their database. Getting it on a wearable line instead of a smartphone (more expensive) or tablet (no talk) plan will be an additional obstacle.
Putting the watch on GoPhone is also technically doable, someone on this forum or Android Central said they did it. I think they called CS with the IMEI and ICCID. Perhaps they will chime in on exactly how they were able to get it done.
I called ATT CS and I was able to activated on $30 plan ($25 Auto).
AFBLANGLEY, does the phone that you use to set up and manage the watch with, does that phone need to have a service plan?

No, it doesn't need a SIM. As long as the phone is connected to a WiFi network, the watch can remotely connect to it. My phone sits docked permanently, right next to the router.

Are you able to utilize apps like spotify and audible from the phone that is connected back home? I am going to attempt to use the same set up as you and keep my Iphone as primary phone. I just would like to get all notifications and be able to respond with the GS3 as well.

It's my understanding that if you have a Spotify premium account, you can stream directly to the watch, but I'm not a Spotify user. I don't believe that there is an Audible app for Tizen.
In terms of messages, email and notifications, yes they will be passed through as long as the watch is remotely connected to the "host" phone.
What you're wanting to do will work fine. The reason I have the setup is because I use a tablet and it is incompatible with the S3.

This is exciting news. Do you happen to have a link that describers your experience using the setup with additional phone? I would be interested to know some details but hate to pick your brain if its already out on the interwebs.
Im guessing that the tablet has no connection and never has to the GS3?
Are you using the tablet with google voice number for calls and messaging? I was contemplating on how I could link my Verizon number on the iPhone to the android at home near the router.
Does your gear s3 still count the steps without connection with the phone? Mine stops with bt and wifi turned off.
I WAS getting Gmail notifications on my standalone S3 Frontier and now I'm not. I have been playing with BT to try and improve battery life so that may have impacted. Currently I have BT OFF on the watch, ON on the phone and cannot get email notification. And gmail notofications are ON in the app. Just in case. Any ideas?

Is the phone displaying the "Remotely Connected" status on Gear Manager App?
Also LTE is a battery hog compared to Bluetooth, using Bluetooth seems to be a better option according to me.:good:
No Remotely Connected. Just Stand Alone. Does Remotely Connected come on when in BT but separated from phone?
OK. NOW it says Remotely Connected for some reason. I tried various combinations of BT and physically left my phone behind and I guess whatever the most recent one was worked. Wish I'd kept notes.
And now it does NOT say Remotely Connected. Got any idea how this is supposed to work? BT and WiFi are off on the watch.
S-Voice, which was working well on my S3 classic for months, and actually being quite useful, has now stopped. Connected via BT, I can't even get it to transcribe words when creating a text. Just tells me an error occurred, try again later.
In standalone, it does contact the "hearing" server and transcribes text, but no commands work -- can't set an alarm, send a text to a contact, make a call, anything, via voice input.
Samsung Pay stopped working at the same time. It can't be a coincidence.
Tried resetting S3 completely and re-pairing, delete the Gear app from my G8+, no joy. Only time anything worked was after resetting watch then setting it up standalone without pairing with the phone. Got ONE command to work (show reminders), but that was it. After that, just got "an error has occurred...".
Any ideas?
Try turning off your ad blocker if you're running Adguard. I had the same problem while running it.

interesting. Maybe that's why it won't work on my watch. If I had to choose between S voice & Adguard, I'd choose Adguard. The data savings alone, blocking the garbage is worth it to me.

Tried that, S-voice started working. You know how to leave adguard running, but exclude the S-voice/gear or whatever app so S-voice will work?
I went through the log on Adguard, cleared it, then turned it on, ran s-voice, looked at the domains filtered, whitelisted them, turned adguard back on, still didn't work.
Nevermind...in Adguard, under app management for gear s plugin, uncheck the route app traffic through adguard. NOW, it is working.

That was it!
Same as Samsung pay… You have to take the Samsung pay gear plug-in out of the monitor and Biad guard I also took out the Samsung pay framework and the local Samsung pay app on the phone just to be safe. Samsung pays starts working again.
