On YouTube are comparisons posted.
You can also check the gsmarena reviews and compare the reference photo's side by side with reviews from other flagships. I was doing this with the Pixel yesterday, since it's generally seen as one of the best camera's out there. My conclusion is that for daylight the difference between these two phones is negligible - if anything the Mate 9 is a fraction better. In low light situations the pixel is a little better.

Not a comparison but a short clip made at a club last weekend. Volume was way above 104db and lots of strobes but you get the idea.
I'm pretty impressed by this result.

I don't know why they don't do a comparison with the V20, they're are the direct competitors, who cares about the iPhone, it's Android vs Android now

I see like two or three girls and 800 guys. Is that due to the mate's algorithm or what?

For those pull out your phone to quickly take a photo moments, would you consider the Note 4 to be ahead of the Mate 9?
I do. However after all the praise I've seen, I'm left thinking that surely I'm doing something wrong. Why am I completely unable to duplicate some of the photos that I've seen people take from this device?
I'm admittedly a complete novice, but from my limited time and experience with my Mate 9's camera, it seems to almost always come out second best to my Note 4. The Mate 9 seems to need near perfect conditions, while you also need to find the right setting (in a hay stack of unlabeled & thoroughly confusing settings), while also needing a steady hand to really to make it shine. Which is entirely worthless to me in any real world scenario. Unless of course I plan on shooting people doing a mannequin challenge anytime soon in the near future. Unrealistic. Don't get me wrong, the pictures are acceptable but they definitely aren't as good as what the Note does with ridiculous and with unwavering consistency. Would really like some input as I'm struggling to understand how a 2 year old device, which doesn't even require that you change it's settings, comprehensively seems to mock whatever the Mate 9 is able to throw at it.
I've only used the standard setting so far, but I've not been disappointed with any pictures taken.
One thing I have noticed is that it will get a sharp focus very much closer to an object than the Note 4 could do.
Have you got the latest update? That is supposed to improve the camera.
I have a Note Edge which has the same camera which is quite good but not quite on par with the latest flagships. My Mate 9 is supposed to arrive in two days. I'll do a comparison. Some random thoughts that come to mind is that they both are f2.2. The resolution is better on the Note 4 or Edge screen than the Mate 9 so it may be best to compare pictures on a computer screen. The Mate 9 did have a software update which appears to improve quality.

I have both. And s7 exynos, mate 9 is unreal. Cpu clearly more powerful than the other 2. Camera is great in pro mode.
I'm getting over 11hrs screen on time with WiFi only and about 9 with data. Amazed. Yes it's better than 6p!

Nobody really has answered the question for you properly. The Nexus 6P has a good camera on it with large pixels. The Mate 9 does not have pixels as large, nor does it have as fast a f stop.
So to answer your question, what do you use the camera for most? e.g. taking pics of kids or pets, indoor shots, or do you shoot a lot of video. etc
To answer the question without this knowledge, all I would say is the Mate 9 camera app allows for extreme creativity over its competition. The S7 has the fastest focus system so action shot or fast moving video is a breeze for it. The large pixels on the 6P are a blessing. The 6P is not the quickest at taking a shot.
Check out the dxo mark test. It's better according to the score. https://www.dxomark.com/Mobiles/Mate-9-camera-review-A-big-step-up-for-Huawei the mate 9 scores 85 and the nexus 6p 84.

Dxomark is useless. It's increasingly clear that it's not so independent and neutral. Also, they don't really seem to want to test a camera to find its best potential nor do they provide the original samples. It's a bit sketchy and their final scores seem arbitrary.

I have to say that those pictures look extremely artificial. Its like the software did the bokeh effect.
I currently have Nexus 6P and I have Mate 9 Pro waiting in the post office, but I am really hesitant to change. One obvious reason is the software but other reason is that Nexus 6P has probably the most underrated camera ever. I did have Samsung Galaxy S7 before, and while the camera is good its not as good as 6P has. I also have Oneplus3T now and while I love almost everything about this phone, on the camera department 6P just wipes the floor with it.
Especially in low light you can get really good detail. Samsung also yes, but I didn't like how with S7 every scenario got more bright. I felt that I lost the atmosphere in the shot.
Like the first picture I post here, it was really dark there, but I think I captured both the details and the atmosphere.
Summa Summarum, Nexus 6P is over a year old phone, but Google did some magic and it is still really tough to beat. Not sure how Pixel can do against it, maybe better. But all the other phones I have tried there is no competition.
It still could be that my curiosity wins and I go pick up my Mate 9 Pro..if I don't like it..I have 850 euros worth phone laying useless..
Great shots from the last 2 posts.

All are playing with the aperture effect, which can be dialed up or back or off even after the fact. I think it is great in the first two, the second two with it off are below though I think it makes for an interesting picture with it on. Using it this Christmas I will say it is best with non human subjects, stationary things. When used with people you can sometimes get a bit of the uncanny valley thing going on. But that said, I think the first two of the original pics I posted are great uses, the second two interesting applications.

You have to remember that the Mate 9 has something else going for it here... a monochrome sensor which does not lose light capture due to an RGB color filter like other camera sensors. From what I am seeing, this seems to be more than making up for the fact that the aperture is f/2.2 and possibly having small pixels. Also, has there been any determination of the pixel size for the Mate 9's camera sensors... either the color RGB or BW sensors? I can't find any details on the actual sensor models themselves, nor the sensor sizes, nor the sensors' pixel sizes - any of these should give us an idea of how capable the camera sensor is. Also, remember that the lenses themselves are high quality Leica Summarit lenses, which does make a difference.
It seems like Huawei has done something really unique here by using the monochrome sensor to augment light and detail capture, plus having arguably the best digital zoom capabilities of any smartphone to date. My phone gets delivered on Wednesday, and if I have time/desire to do so, I will compare the camera as best as I can against my LG V20 and Pixel XL, using manual controls, zoom, etc.

The 6P is neck and neck against the Pixel phones in terms of photo quality when both devices have HDR+ On. The Pixels are much better though, for 3 reasons... first, they have HDR+ Auto which works in an entirely new way, giving an HDR+ "Lite" mode essentially that allows for instantaneous HDR capture with zero lag/delay. HDR+ Auto cannot give as much dynamic range as HDR+ On (which does have a lag/delay still), but it produces great results and identical results to HDR+ On in most situations... only some situations require HDR+ On for the best quality. Second, they have phase detection autofocus and a host of other sensor enhancements, which make speed/ease of capture MUCH better. The autofocus is almost as fast as the S7 now. Lastly, the HDR+ processing is much faster and doesn't get bogged down easily like the 6P does when taking numerous shots.
The 6P is still a great camera... just as good as the Pixels really, if you have time to get the shot and don't mind the lag from HDR+ On. But the Pixels are still easier to shoot with, and have MUCH better video if you need it.
I also want to mention, that I actually can get much better detail from my LG V20 than my Pixel XL when I try... specifically when using manual mode. Some of this is due to the higher megapixel count, but some of it is also due to having total control over the camera. I don't really trust manual camera apps to work well on the Pixels as they were not optimized for that usage like LG's phones. With that said, the Pixel/6P will have MUCH better dynamic range and consistency in photos over LG... but if you truly want the most detailed shot, and fine-tuned exactly how you want it, LG is the way to go... and maybe Huawei now too. LG's camera app is much better, but Huawei seems to have done a pretty good job in terms of manual control... will have to check out the results when I get my phone Wednesday.

I would suggest uploading pictures to Flickr or Google Photos. XDA compresses them to crap if you attach them here, and the quality looks like garbage.
anyone experiencing stuttering while video recording? Found this to be quite bad!! but video playback is actually ok . Just while recording, the video is insanely laggy..! thought it was the save to sd card thing but no difference when there was no SD card inside. HELP!

The mate 9 also has dual cameras that make up for it's short comings in f stop and smaller pixels. And it has OIS which the 6p is terrible with on video.
All i know is the 6P, for me, was so slow to capture it drove me crazy. Mate 9 isn't quite as fast as my S7 but it is close and adding in the dual camera and zoom options I am finding it a far better experience than my 6P and even better than the S7.

The guys at OnePlus recently conducted a photo blind test for different categories. They've published the result on their forums.
Apparently, OnePlus 6 wins the low-light portrait mode. While iPhone X wins best Architecture photo, Pixel 2 wins Low-light and S9 wins the best portrait photo.
The blind test - https://www.oneplus.in/blindtest-6
The result - https://forums.oneplus.com/threads/...-guess-who-won-the-portrait-low-light.838746/
What do you guys think?
I think overall, the OP6 is pretty great. I honestly think Pixel 2 wins though. The low-light is just great
Sadly, results IRL don't seem so good right now. Very inconsistent...
It shows in the various YT Videos as well. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad.
My wife's iPhone x camera is also hit and miss so I would say it's probably not something we should worry about?

Weeks back, Wired chatted with the Imaging Director of OnePlus Simon Liu who said:
"I think we have a shot at competing with the first tier phones, I don’t think we can beat them, but the imaging world is always subjective."

When corporations do not have anything soild to justify in a particular subject matter, they generally use such terms. Especially, OnePlus has been hyping bigtime in anything they are good at(take "speed" as just one example) from the very beginning. What I've understood throughout years from OnePlus is they maintain a low profile in that particular aspect where they trail behind competition by quite a margin.
As for P3XL & P30Pro both are superbly excellent in their own terms with both having some minor cavities here and there, but OnePlus would be nowhere near either of them....I will be very happy if what I am guessing now turns out to be wrong later....!!!
So guys u think it's worth now that u saw some reviews?

Care about way better batterylife and camera and can live with EMUI , go for P30Pro.
Need speed ,smoothness and again speed ornamented by polished OxygenOS but do not care much about cameras and not so great batterylife(i.e. it's good, not amongst the chart toppers) then choose OP7Pro.
*I won't talk about DxOMark score of 111 given to OP7Pro and its underlined individual scores, reviewers don't agree with the idea of it having very good cameras.
*I can go on and on based on my own opinion, research and my hands-on experience but feeling lazy to write an essay

Good idea, but the camera blind test needs more work. Youtube makes it pretty hard, because of the compression and the lack of color accuracy.
So you need to show a 100% crop of the image in the important areas. Also, the pictures should be made in a manner that shows the dynamic range, focus deph, details etc from the different devices. Like the indoor shot for example. Let us see how they handle contre-jour etc.
Look at this part: https://youtu.be/ihN_av8Sk2w?t=334
That is really stressing the camera. Preserving details while upping the dynamic range in high contrast scenes is really taxing.
