After clearing my data I have to restart before assistant starts working.

Didn't work.
I've followed all the steps above.
1. I've mounted the system folder as R/W
2. I've copied velvet.apk to the directory, and gave it rw- r-- r-- permissions.
3. I've opened the build.prop file, edited it to add the two lines.
4. Opened the settings, went to the google app, and cleared cache, went into the manage space and cleared all data.
5. Restarted my device.
6. Long pressed the home button, and the google-on-tap screen comes up.
I've re-checked everything I've done. All the permissions are set and the build.prop is still modified. Can you please help?
Edit: I've downloaded the apk in the hope that it was corrupted the first time. I think it was. I've got the assistant running now. Thank you!
However, everytime I say "Ok, Google" it takes me to the screen where I start training my voice model. Is this the issue for everyone? Or is it just me? I've looked around and a few people are reporting the same thing. I was wondering if there was a fix for this?

@linkinscreamer and others... you might try ChopAssistant from the Play Store. It bypasses the prompt to retrain the voice. It worked for me

What happens if I don't have a file called velvet? Running xperience 7.1 rom

I'm curious... has anyone had any success activating GA on Marshmallow?

I tried on stock 6.0.1 and didn't work. Any help?

If You Don't Have A Folder Called Velvet Inside /system/priv-app/ that means You Don't Have the Google app. If You Don't Have the Google app, simply create a new folder under /system/priv-app named Exactly as 'Velvet' and follow the steps.:good:

Have you mounted system as RW instead of RO? Otherwise the build.prop changes won't take place.

[APP] Google Now APK/ZIP for ICS [ARMv7]

Requirements:
Follow the simple instructions here.
You must be on Ice Cream Sandwich.
You MUST be rooted
You must be on a deodexed ROM. If you aren't sure, ask your chef.
You should be running a custom recovery like ClockWorkMod Recovery (CWM) or Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP). I use CWM, so this guide is based on that.
Your device must be using ARMv6 or v7 CPU architecture. If you aren't sure what that is, check this thread.
You must have a file explorer that has root permissions. I use ES File Explorer, so this guide is based on that.
You need at least 60MB of system space for the full offline installation. (30MB for online only version) If you don't know how to check, simply download Titanium Backup from the market. It tells you right on the main screen.
ARMv7 INSTRUCTIONS:
Download whichever file you want and flash it in recovery.
File descriptions:
Online only zip is for those of you who need to save /system space. It removes the offline voice files, so that offline voice dictation does not work. You must always have some sort of data connection for this type of zip.
Offline/Online zip is for those with no /system space restrictions. It contains the full Google Now package with offline voice dictation.
APK only is for those who have already flashed a zip. You may simply push the new apk to /system/app (overwrite or remove the previous version), set permissions to rw-r-r (0644), and reboot to enjoy the latest version of Google Now. DO NOT TRY TO INSTALL THE APK BY ITSELF.
If you aren't sure which one to use, or if this is too much information or is otherwise overwhelming for you, just flash the M7 version - Offline/Online, since it's the latest. Be sure to scroll down a bit and read about it, though.
Before doing anything, you need to make sure you have at least 60MB of free space on your /system partition for Offline/Online files and 30MB of free /system space for Online Only files.
Flashable Zips:
M7 - mikeyxda's version 7. This version improves on M6 by tweaking notifications to be more accurate and frequent. This version may use more battery. If you are using a Sense ROM, see the troubleshooting below for a hack to improve Google Now performance and battery efficiency.
Online/Offline via Mediafire - 36.48MB /Hotfile mirror
Online Only via Mediafire - 14.06MB /Hotfile mirror
M7-Velvet.apk Only
M6 - Mikeyxda's version 6. This version has improved on the previous one by fixing the double take problem, typed searches are working, auto launch is fixed, as well as the following fixes from the previous version: Red mic with cards showing with no refresh needed, no FCs, offline dictation, and no stretched words. These zips all use zipalligned apks.
Offline/Online via Mediafire - 36.43MB /Hotfile mirror
Online only via Mediafire - 14.01MB /Hotfile mirror
M6-Velvet.apk Only
R3 - "Nearly there" version by ReekoTubbs. This version has the Red mic with cards showing with no refresh needed, no double take, no FCs, offline dictation, auto-launch, no blank screen, and no stretched words. These zips all use zipalligned apks.
Offline/Online via Mediafire - 36.48MB /Hotfile mirror
Online only via Mediafire - 14.07MB/Hotfile mirror
R3-Velvet.apk Only
How to:
Move the file you picked to the root of your SD card. Don't put it in any folder. This just makes it easier to find.
Reboot your device into recovery. See your device's specific instructions on how to do this if you are not sure. Google it for a faster answer.
In CWM, navigate to "Install zip from SD" and select that.
Next, highlight "Choose zip from SD card" and select it.
Scroll down to the Google Now zip you loaded onto your SD card, then select it.
Scroll down and select the option that says "Yes - Install Google Now....zip"
Once it has flashed, go back to the main CWM menu and select "Reboot system now".
Double Checking:
Some Recoveries do not do a good job of retaining the permissions being set by the zips. If you aren't using CWM or TWRP, then please follow these steps to ensure that everything is as it should be.
Let the ROM boot all the way, then fire up ES File Explorer (or whichever one you feel like using). We need to make sure a few permissions stuck (just in case).
If you haven't used ES File Explorer before, open it, then hit menu.
Tap settings, then scroll all the way down.
Check the box that says "Up to Root" (pic).
Then check the box that says "Root Explorer"
Allow root access when the dialogue box for Superuser pops up.
After that, check off "Mount file system", then back out of the menu. (pic)
Navigate to /system/usr/srec/ and find two folders named "config" and "en-US"
Tap and hold on the "config" folder icon to bring up the options menu, then scroll down to Properties.
Tap properties, then tap change and see if the check boxes match this picture.
If it matches, leave it alone and head back to your home screen to enjoy using Google Now! If it doesn't match, change it so it does.
Do the same thing for the "en-US" folder.
Go into the settings menu for Google Now and set it up for your Google account and various other settings.
Now What?
So, you flashed Google Now. You're wondering what you can do with it, right? Well, thankfully, Killer-B has a handy little guide to get you up to speed on all the cool stuff Google Now can do as well as how to do it!
Commands & Now Cards For Google Now!!! Now Video, and custom widget
At this point, I'd suggest looking through your contact list for people with unusual, or difficult to pronounce names. Go into their contact card, and add in a nickname for them of their phonetically spelled name. Google Now has trouble parsing these unusual names, and their isn't a way to make it learn. Spelling the names like they sound allows you to send texts and place calls via Google Now without any voice issues.
Open up the red mic screen and "Do a barrel roll."
Troubleshooting:
If you are having an issue with Google Now, please refer to the thread originally created by cajunflavoredbob here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30809177&postcount=1
The red mic screen won't display.
To fix this, press the normal mic within the Google Now app. While it is listening (after it beeps), press menu > refresh. Now you're at the red mic.
Google Now Force Closes.
Make sure you have enough space on your /system partition before installing this. You need at least 60MB free for the Offline versions and 30MB free for the Online versions.

Oh and just to explain, the old gmail allows stuff based on signature, so as this apk is resigned it will not be allowed. The new gmail marks it as dangerous and will create a notification for you to allow permission, or the patched one marks it as normal and allows it silently.

My phone gets worse battery life or uses more data.
Read this post by Racer Of All and follow the directions using apktool. This is for advanced users running a Sense ROM only.
Sports cards aren't showing up.
It won't add teams that aren't in season. American football is currently in preseason. Baseball, however, works perfectly fine.
I want Google Now in another language than US English.
From the Google Now home screen with the cards, tap Menu, then Settings. Tap Voice, then Language and select the language you want recognized. The text of Google Now in searches and regular cards should mirror that of your system language.
My Galaxy SIII just received the new update which blocks local search, and Google Now won't work properly.

All files are on the device with the correct permissions except because of the different search apk (GoogleQuickSearchBox_USA.apk) the method mentioned in the OP won't work until you delete the _USA part of the file and then reboot into recovery and reflash following the OP instructions.

This is a quirk in the later apks. You may need to hit the little magnifying glass icon next to the search link. This will allow you to open those links properly.

Want to go back to stock?
If, for some reason, you want to remove Google Now and return to how you were before, flash the following zip. It removes all Google Now files, and returns the original Google Search app and voice files, as well as sets permissions for the Search app. Make sure to uninstall talkback and then reinstall it once you reboot to get voice search working again.
Google Now to Google Search via Mediafire- 629.35KB /Hotfile mirror

I would suggest making a Nandroid backup then try the zip and flash in CWM (clear cache and davlik - reboot will take longer the first time)
OR
Using Root Explorer
Navigate to System/app rename GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk to whatever you want to
Drag/Drop Velvet-theos0o-3.apk in System/app and rename it to GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk
Change permissions to rw-, r--, r-- and reboot (do NOT try and install the APK)
- it should definitely work then
When you restart - go to Manage Apps, find Google Search then clear data and cache (should clear up the network error)

[Possible FIX Need Testers]Google A/C wipe fix on leaked 4.3 Samsung Note II Roms

My Google account was being wiped out in front of my eyes almost every other time i rebooted. After some thread reading and trial and error I finally figured it out. Its been about 18 hours and over 15 reboots (EDIT: Few days now ) either via reboot menu, wanamXposed module and adb, I have not lost my account so far.
This is still being tested, so affected users please test and comment how it worked for you.
There are hundreds of posts out there that tell you the fix is to be on Google play Store version 4.4.21 and many of them have reported that it works. Unfortunately many including me, were on the very same version and yet Google account was being wiped no matter what. Thats when i realized, it is not just being on 4.4.21, but having that version as a system app, instead of having the version installed as an update. The difference is, when you have version 3.x.x installed as a system app, which updates itself to 4.4.21, it does not update the original app, but instead installs updates in the /data partition. So seeing version 4.4.21 in the Playstore app 'About' settings does not mean anything.
Verify if you are on an affected release.
Go to Setting >> more >> Application Manager >> Downloaded. If you see 'Google Play Store' you may be affected.
Now go to the application managers "All" Section (swiping leftward from 'Downloads' section) and navigate to 'Google Play Store'
You will see the version number of your app. Next to it, you will see two buttons, One of them may be "uninstall updates" If you see this option, your version number means nothing. Don't be fooled by it, you have may 4.4.21 installed, but in your /data/app directory.
If the above was true, you have an older version of playstore installed as a system app, and have the latest version installed as an update over the old version in the /data partition.
Instructions
Flash GoogleWipeFix_Flash_CWM.zip from Clockworkmod.
PS: This really only removes your existing Google Play Store, flashes v 4.4.21 and clears data. You may as well flash it, nothing to loose.
Click Show content for Manual Instructions (Not needed if you chose to flash instead).
You do not need this if you flash using my zip. This is for Manual Testing only.
If you are not already on PlayStore version 4.4.21 then download version 4.4.21 and place in in your SDCard as /sdcard/Phonesky.apk
DOWNLOAD
Google Play Store 4.4.21
Instructions for shell users :
Code:
su
mount -o remount, rw /system
cp /system/app/Phonesky.apk /system/app/Phonesky.apk.bkp
mv /data/app/com.android.vending-1.apk /data/app/com.android.vending-1.apk.bkp
cp /sdcard/Phonesky.apk /system/app/Phonesky.apk
chmod 644 /system/app/Phonesky.apk
reboot
Instructions for Root explorer users
Re-mount /system as read-write
Backup /system/app/Phonesky.apk
Backup and Delete /data/app/com.android.vending-1.apk (TIP: you may see warnings that PlayStore Stopped, Thats ok!)
Copy /sdcard/Phonesky.apk and overwrite /system/app/Phonesky.apk
Give the new apk appropriate read permissions to all. rw-r--r--

I am using Tigra v.3 ROM, which has the 4.4.21 version as system app and still I had the Google account wiped yesterday after a reboot from Wanam Xposed.
So maybe your fix solves some problems, but in my case...
Thanks anyway!
My ROM users are already on 4.4.2.1 by default (removed everything related to old versions) and they still have account lost.
The problem is only in XXUEMI6, XXUEMJ2/5 don't have this problem.

no i no longer get the force close / crash message
just no connection (like i was getting prior to trying a million other fixes)
including factory reset
I haven't been on the forums much lately but can't see anything about this - what is the bug exactly? All your google data being deleted on just the account being removed from the phone? Or something else entirely?

[GUIDE] Enable Download Booster On Verizon - DETAIL INSTRUCTIONS

I basically took the instructions from XDA member "chronicaust" and made them simple with 1 single download link for the service files, and links to all apps needed. People were having trouble understanding the process in the original thread. So I hope this simplifies it and makes it clear for any new people. All I did was reorganize this process and hopefully make it easier for most people. The original instructions were confusing for me... I don't take credit for developing this at all!

Thank YOU!! I couldn't figure out with the other thread, this was simple and easy to follow, just a suggestion, when you mention root system folder, it would probably make it less confusing for others if you mention that it's not the actual folder called "root" under system.
Well not sure what I did wrong. Copied over the the two files into the framework folder. The phone froze and rebooted as expected. It then said optimizing about 400 apps. After that finished it just kept saying "Unfortunately, Verizon Login has stopped.", "NFC Service", "com.android.phone", "Google search", "Pica something..." and several others in an endless loop. :/
EDIT: Downloading the stock Verizon tar... What a pitty. I cannot access anything.

Yeah I changed the permissions for both. (Granted I ended up removing permissions?) The only thing I did that might be different from what you said is copy both files with the permissions already changed at the same time then it froze.

I'm not sure why so many people are obsessed with enabling this feature. People like me who don't have unlimited data don't care to piss it away with "boosting" my download speeds. Plus, I don't really download anything worth needing it anyways but all the power to the rest of you

I think most people here more like, "If I can have it, I want it" not more so the fact that they NEED it, ya know?
Yea I know what your mean. It would be really useful if you can use it with any application

I followed the steps and after it updated apps. My Wifi Tether notification icon has changed. It shows the USB one instead of the usual radio signal icon. and when I click on the notification, it takes me to the USB and Bluetooth tether screen. Whereas before, it took me right to the WIFI Tether screen.
When I backed up the files to change them back, I realized that I backed up the wrong files.
Stupid me.
Does anyone have the stock JAR and ODEX files? I'd rather have the convenience of tether than download booster.
Thanks in advance.

Omg! Thank you so much. I think I should back up my phone first before I do anything else.
Also one more question, is there a setting.odex in the framework folder? I think that's what I copied.

I followed all the way up to replacing services.jar and when I do replace it, it says unfortunately (a bunch of apps) has stopped. It causes me to have to do a battery pull, and when I do power it back on, it gets stuck on the Verizon logo screen. I've tried it a few times with both root explorer, efs file explorer, and both files at the same time/services.jar first. Every time I try, I have to restore my rom using safestrap. Any ideas would be appreciated.
Edit: I tried flashing the zip in the main thread and it's working so far without any hiccups.
@waleed300
Can you put a disclaimer on the OP that states that enabling this (if you have native hotspot enabled) will mess with your WiFi Hotspot toggle since it replaces the services.jar? Hotspot still works, but the running notification is incorrect. Just a thought....

If you want to fix it, you have to replace your services.jar with the stock one (this is how I fixed it with the help of Versatile1). And I had a question, when your mobile hotspot running notification was the correct one, clicking the running notification took you to the hotspot options but did long pressing the quicksetting still take you to the USB tether options? Was just wondering.
Download Booster not using LTE?
So I've had Download Booster enabled for a little while after following this post. I've noticed a couple of things:
1. When downloading large files, DB doesn't always appear and when it does appear, LTE is never used.
2. During the download, DB disappears.
I wasn't sure what the reason was for the odd behavior but was curious to see if anybody else has noticed it.
I would make a donation for a 1-click apk solution like towelroot.

[Q] Xperia Neo V (Root): Google Play not working

Hi All, From few day my xperia Neo-V’s Google Play not working.
My phone is rooted. Stock rom and kernel. Boot loader never unlocked. No custom recovery installed.
Initially Google Play started to show an error with 495 number. I searched the web and taken the following actions:
1) Clean cache of Google play and Google services framework, then rebooted.
Result: Nothing resolved.
2) Removed Google account. Rebooted. Google account re-created.
Result: Nothing resolved.
3) Removed Google play updates and tried different versions.
Result: Nothing resolved. But now it shows following different messages according to different versions:
1) “Check your connection and try again” (V 5.3.6, But Connection is working in other apps)
2) “No Connection” (V-4.8, But Connection is working in other apps)
3) “Unfortunately Goggle play store has stopped”
(V:3.5, Crashes when try to start and sometimes shows "Server error")
4) Phone settings reset, Reboot, above steps repeated.
Result: Nothing resolved.
Here I want to clarify when I first faced the problem, I found that date was not correct, it was one month advance. I corrected the date 'but nothing resolved.
Now I don’t know what happened with my phone. Can anybody Help me? Please…

Download Es file manager or root explorer.
Go to system/etc and find hosts file.
Edit it.
Delete all and copy that 127.0.0.1 localhost.
Save. Thats all.

Flash GAPPS, much easier way to do.
You probably want to install a custom recovery.
Thanks for the reply. I did a huge mistake...
Thanks for the valuable reply sir. But i did not wait for you reply (a huge mistake) and i factory reset my phone. Because it was rooted and so many system apps were removed from it. After resetting, its Home key not working, Power off button show only 'Power off' (Not 'Flight Mode', Silent mode etc), Camera not working. It hangs-up if camera app is opened and then i have to reboot it to access again. 'Slide to Unlock' not working. There may be other problems which currently i don't know.
I have a backup of all system '.APK' which was removed (But not 'App Data' only APKs). Now i am trying to install these all files and Converting them to system apps, After that i will Reset it to Factory settings again, With a hope 'every thing will be Ok. Will you suggest me anything else...
Problem Solved... Thanks to all...

Hello there, as we all know, LZPLAY is not working anymore. Therefore, I'm here to share another way to install google. I 've already confirmed ITS WORKING! Safetynet failed but the whole service works great.
1:
Backup all your files to HiSuite. REMEMBER THIS! And do a factory reset! This is important or there might be some problems.
2:
Download the two files I provided here:
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1zQX5Q4w92Jwc2k5iy3QAPVir1qAKuGBe?usp=sharing
3:
Unzip "Google APKs.7z" and install all the apks for your phone that is been factory reset.
4:
Unzip HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro_2019-10-04 17.00.14 to your HiSuite backup folder. Restore it to your phone. Don't restore your own backup yet.
5:
clear all the data for the google apks you just installed and set all the permissions correct. (Simply check all the permissions that the google app need)

Trying this tomorrow When I get mine. At what step do you restore the backup of your own phone or is the backup needed if something goes wrong?

Thank you, I managed by first restoring the backup and than installing the apps and rebooting.
Google login now works mostly.
The first issue I found is that Whatsapp is unable to use the system google account and requires a google login for Drive backup restore of messages.
It doesn't let me add account to playstore / gmail. i've tried all of these many times and enabled all the permissions to Gapps but nothing seems to work here

You need to install Google Drive and all Google stuff, launch all these Google Apps and make sure they are all working, then you can try using apps that relying on it like WhatsApp.
sometimes it just need some time to become completely normal since you have clear the cache for all Google apps previously.
Google Apps and services framework need some time to configure theirself.
You may need to wait and restart your phone for a few times
