Anyone using a Gear S2 3G on a different carrier than your phone? - Samsung Gear S2

Since VZW doesn't appear to be on board with the launch of the Gear S3 tomorrow I am looking to get it on T-Mobile.
Anyone here using an S2 3G on a different carrier than your phone? If so, how's the compatibility? Seamless? Can you receive calls made to the handset on the Gear when you leave the phone at home? Texts, etc?
I know I can connect via Bluetooth when using the devices together. I just want to be able to receive calls and texts made to the S7 when I leave it at home.
Thanks

I want the handset calls and texts to forward to the Gear when I leave the phone at home, i.e. Cycling, working out.
I pretty much want it all to work the way it would if they were on the same carrier. I don't have a problem using Gear data as a stand alone. Just want notifications to go through.

It will connect. Forwarding works, but as but what I've learned is check to see if the gear is using ur phones number or the gears number.

My s2 is with tmobile and my s7 edge is with sprint. Once synced it works exactly like it did when synced to my tmobile note 5.

I'm confirming if u have a Verizon gear S2 3G ... EVERYTHING WORKS. , since I'm always with my phone I took the 3G plan they have.

I have the S2 Classic SM-R735AZKAATT (for AT&T obviously) but I'd like to have it set up with T-Mobile.
Can I take this into T-Mobile and set up service? If so, anyone know how much?

Im not sure to be honest. The S2 has a, esim?, i think its called. Basically the sim is built into the device. I think that limits the carrier its tied to.

I'm not sure, either, about taking it to T-Mobile. I think you have to have ATT unlock it. Are you the original owner? My understanding it that only the original owner can unlock it. As for the cost of service on T-Mobile, if you don't have a phone on T-Mobile, it's about $19/month for unlimited calls, texts, and 500MB of data on your watch. My Note 4 is on Sprint, my S2 is on T-Mobile. It is a T-Mobile model. I'd go into a T-Mobile store and see what they say. Let us know.

Did you buy your S2 new or even refurbished off of Amazon or something? You might be able to activate it online if this is the case. I went to the T-Mobile store to activate mine, as I was buying it from a guy on Craigslist. I wanted to also make sure I could activate it. That it was paid for and so on. That worked fine in the store. I had already had a T-Mobile account for my original Gear S. When I got home, though, I had trouble connecting my S2 to my Sprint Note 4. I had to do a factory reset on the watch a couple of times to make it work. It was scary at first, because when I went to set it up, the only screen I could get to on my watch was a set up screen. I couldn't get past it. That's when I did the factory reset on the watch. And then reset it some more. Finally I was able to connect it to my Note 4. The original Gear S has a nano SIM card, so you can swap it out. The S2 has an "e-SIM" card. It's sort of hard wired into the watch, I guess. The moral of this long post is, I'd probably go into a T-Mobile store to get it set up on their service. They should also be able to help you get it connected to your phone.

AT&T Number sync question

I have the AT&T S2 3G but with my Nexus 6. I realize now that of course my Nexus doesn't work with NumberSync so I am stuck with auto call forward option. I am debating of move from the N6 to maybe a Note4 least until I can get a S7 when it comes out. Here are my questions,
1. How does text messages work, Will they both show up on the watch and phone? For example if I leave my phone behind and I get a text and respond on 3G just with the watch. Will I see my reply on my phone when I go back home to use it? So my text log will be the same on watch/phone..?
2. One last one is getting phone calls, I am assuming that with the on BT only my phone will ring. The watch will ring only when its on 3G mode right?
Sorry if these are dumb questions, the guy at the AT&T store couldnt give me a for sure answer at all.. I'd rather trust you guys here instead.
Actually, it's easy to get numbersync to work. you just need to update the imei in att system with an att phone that supports volte, even if you're not actually using that phone. . Did it with my moto x pure.

I tried that with my wife's S6. But soon as I put my sim back in the N6 I got a text saying it was turned off. Can you explain on what you did exactly?
Thanks
I called them and said I was using an HTC desire 626, and changed the imei to match an att 626, then put the sim into my moto x pure, and set up number sync. Maybe the n6 is just a jerk when it comes to that? There is a soc code that care can add "numbersync on" that MIGHT help with the issue.
---------- Post added at 08:30 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:29 PM ----------
I actually have the 626, and waited like an hour before swapping sims.
Was the HTC desire 626 an extra phone? Guessing that I will need an older phone to lie about my IMEI #.
Yes, I had to finance them to get the credits for porting my numbers over with directv and unl. I may have a damaged HD voice phone at work that you could use the imei from. (All legit, phone with cracked screen used as a trade in to "recycle" ). PM me if needed.
I have an iPhone 6 Plus and an international Samsung Galaxy A8 with no HD Voice or VoLTE. Since my SIM card is tied to an iPhone plan, Numbersync works no matter which phone I have on me. For example, if I have the SIM card in my iPhone 6 Plus, I just leave my Galaxy A8 connected to the charger with WiFi connected. If I am away from home, my Gear S2 3G is able to connect to my Galaxy A8 remotely to receive notifications, and it will ring if I receive a call on the number tied to the SIM card in my iPhone 6 Plus.
Thank you for the offer paoloroesekel. I just read last night that with AT&T is giving FREE S2 with any galaxy phone and I am due for an upgrade. So maybe time to get note5.
I just have 3days left to return my current S2.
Thank you though!

Just sent you a PM about that old IMEI, some news sites say the watch is free but AT&T is saying its now.
There is now a work around for the watch not being free with a purchase of a galaxy device. . Make sure they look up the coupon code
Thank you! I got the NumberSync to work perfectly. However I seem to have lost VM. Did that happen to you?
And thanks for the heads up about the promo. I still might just keep the N6 now that I got NumberSync working.
My voicemail seems to still work. We're you actually utilizing the watch number? Have you tried calling 1 and setting it up again?
---------- Post added at 03:11 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:10 PM ----------
I'm glad numbersync is working now for you. Was it the imei?
I was trying to have the same VM as the phone. But for whatever reason if the watch has numbersync on it get a busy signal. Ive tried messing with the actual voicemail number on the watch itself to match the phone but no go. I may have to call ATT again but dont want them to tell me that me IMEI dont match.
As far as numbersync goes are yall getting it to work with messages too? I can only get calls....tier 3 or 4 engineer dude said it's only supported fully on s6 active and S5 mini.

This post is from 2016 so Idk if AT&T's numbersync technology has changed since then.
Have you ever tried getting numbersync to work on a Huawei phone ?
I just bought a Huawei Mate 20 X EVR-L29 (c636 Asian international version) & I had to switch from Verizon prepaid to AT&T prepaid , I also have a LG Watch Sport on AT&T prepaid, I am interested in switching to post paid plan if I can get numbersync to work & Huawei Mate 20 X to my LG Watch Sport.
Do you think the method that you provided will still work even 2-3 years later & on a Huawei phone?

Carrier Updates

I just bought a used T-Mobile Gear S2. I think (sadly) I know the answer but wanted to check. Are updates for the carrier versions maintained by the carrier or Samsung?
The carriers release the updates for the s2 just like they do for phones... My last update (verizon) actually released super quickly. This latest one though is a week behind as of now. It doesn't seem as terrible as the phone updates.
I purchased a used Verizon model last night and I wanted to know what is the latest Android wear update for the Verizon variant?
FYI I did NOT activate the watch nor do I even know if the IMEI/ESN is bad. How do I find out if it's bad and what are the downsides to owning a bad IMEI/ESN variant other than not being able to activate it for cell service? Thanks in advance.

If the esim is bad would my carrier or Samsung be able to lock the watch and make it unusable as a watch? I don't care if it's esim locked as long as I can use it as a watch. Thanks once again.

Your watch will still work as a watch but you just won't be able to run the watch as a standalone watch/phone. So you will need to have your phone with you to receive calls and make calls. From what I've heard, t mobile won't activate a at&t watch and vise ver

If bad esim, you can so update through your phone through the gear app. The esim is just so you can activate watch to use without your phone
(Leave your phone at home, or a walk) every carrier had a different software update

Thanks for the clarification. How do I know what's the latest software? That sucks that these watches aren't unified as far as software is concerned. You would think it would be a lot easier to maintain with a specific software for the wifi version and vice versa for the 3g. Smh

Go into gear app, click settings>about gear>update software. It will tell you if it's up to date. And it'd just like our phones having different updates through carrier. It all depends on how long the carrier takes putting the update out
Each carrier can lock u out.. but if u good with others you ok. You can use it as a watch with a bad esim.

NumberSync S3 on AT&T

I'm unable to get it setup on my Note4. I get the incredibly useful message "Backend error" from the AT&T site after I enter the sync code on their site.
Is this a temporary issue you think, or is it just the usual incompetence of an inept software developer who can't be bothered to give meaningful results to help narrow down the cause of an error?
Is it working for everyone else?
Yep, getting the same error message. Hope this is temporary!
I was having a similar issue. On my Gear S3 when trying to get the sync code, it kept giving an error message. Finally after 9:30 central time I was able to generate the code and get it synced. I think the system was overloaded with all the at&t pre-orders being delivered yesterday.
Anyone have AT&T S3 but linking to S7E 935F International phone? Keep trying to set up Numbersync but it connects to my wife's 935A. It won't see my phone. I am running Hydra Rom but the watch is connected with Bluetooth no problem.
For numbersync to be setup, you have to have a username for myatt for that exact phone. Then it will allow you to setup numbersync if that phone is HD voice capable.
I set it up on my Axon 7 without any problems.
Just tried again, same error message

According to AT&T International S7E (Exynos) is not compatible with LTE Frontier watch on AT&T due to no HD voice? Can use Bluetooth, but not the Numbersync. I'm pretty PO'd right now as that was why I bought it.
Anybody getting this to work yet?
I have not been able to get it to work. I am using an unlocked tmobile note 4. When I called I was told it was because it was not an at&t phone. What if I change the build prop to 910A from 910T? Would that be enough for it to work? Dont want to try and mess things up.

Hi I'm new to this forum. Like OP, I also have a Note 4 ATT LTE and had the same Numbersync error. Here is how I resolved my issue after extensive research:
1) Make sure to enable HD Voice on your phone if supported (for Note 4: Settings->More networks->Mobile networks->Mobile data->check Enhanced LTE Services (mine was unchecked)
2) Before even attempting to sync via Numbersync, make sure that your cell phone number is set as primary in My ATT account. I didn't have a primary number set, so I tried making the Gear S3's number primary (when I was prompted to add one) and it didn't work properly. So I learned it's essential your PHONE (the one you intend to connect with S3) is set as primary, NOT another phone/tablet/wearable line in your account.
3) After all the initial errors and hassles thereafter, I just reset the S3 after following my above instructions and the sync was seamless and I was up and running.
Hope this helps...it certainly worked for me!

The red pointer is for the chronograph function. It does not move unless you tap it to start the chrono. Bad design in my opinion.
Soo no one here might have an iPhone they were able to get numbersync to work on with the leaked iOS app?
Has anyone got Numbersync to work on International S7E 935F?
I have number sync working with my Nexus 6P, spent about an hour in the AT&T store working with the salesperson that sold me my Frontier. He was under the belief that it was tied to IMEI numbers so he supposedly cloned my wife's IMEI number to my 6P which didn't work. I told him that I read that HD Voice/VoLTE had to be enabled and because I had a Nexus 6P that was the problem. So he called support and asked them to enable HD Voice on my line. While he was doing that I was googling, found this thread: https://forums.att.com/t5/Device-Features/Nexus-6P-No-HD-Voice-and-Wifi-Calling/td-p/4346076 and followed this guide:
Navigate to Settings > More > Cellular Networks and enable the toggle switch for "Enhanced" 4G LTE Mode. However, if the toggle is missing then follow the steps provided below:
Launch the Dialer app on your phone, and dial*#*#4636#*#*.
Choose Phone information.
Enable or select VoLTE Provisioned Flag.
Restart the phone.
Go to Settings " More " Cellular networks and toggle the switch for Enhanced 4G LTE Mode, and the HD Voice calling feature should now be activated on your device running Android 5.1 and above.
Click to collapse
I enabled the VoLTE option, restarted my phone and sure enough when I went back into the MyATT webpage I was now offered the ability to enter in a sync code and it worked. He was never able to get support to enable HD Voice on their end. Going back into the setting it shows that VoLTE isn't active, I have no HD Voice option or feature in the Enhanced 4G LTE options at all but my number is indeed synced. I left my phone at home, walked the dogs and made 2 phone calls and the number did go over as my cell number.
Now the other thing he mentioned that should work is to use an approved AT&T phone that has HD Voice capabilities enabled. Then if I were to put my SIM in that phone, wait for the MyATT webpage to update showing that this other phone was tied to my number, then perform the number sync at this point it should also work, once it's enabled it won't go away according to the ATT rep. I didn't need to do that so I can't confirm but it sounds reasonable.

Huge question for owners of the S8+ factory unlocked...

So, I use my phone for a source of internet at my place of work. I have AT&T service and currently have an Axon 7 and enjoy free wifi hotspot with it, and it works great. However, I can't get the axon 7 to play well with my gear s3 for samsung pay and a few other weird very annoying things.
So, I want to get the S8+ that is factory unlocked so I can use the wifi hotspot without issue and get all of the benefits of my watch, but I have heard a horrible rumor that when you put in an att sim that the unlocked s8+ downloads the att bloatware and will not let you have free wifi tethering. I have an unlimited plan and already pay for my internet, I should be allowed to use it as I see fit damn it!
My question is this: If I have an At&t unlimited data plan and buy the International Unlocked Samsung Galaxy S8+, can I use the wifi hotspot (wifi tethering) with no problems with it remaining stock, unrooted?
I freaking hope that I can as this would be really the biggest reason for me to buy it and would certainly keep me from buying it if in fact I cannot use the wifi hotspot on it.
Thanks for your time everyone!
Anyone? I am poised to buy this thing if I can use it the way I need to.
If no one else answers before I get home, I have an AT&T sim card I can pop in and check.
These phones shouldn't be downloading bloatware though, at the very most it imposes Network features and restrictions of the carrier you're using.
I don't have any Verizon bloat on mine, but I also haven't been paying attention to whats happening with others, as there isn't very much talk of the unlocked model on here.
---------- Post added at 08:13 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:11 PM ----------
You should be able to do whatever the phone is capable of without rooting provided the AT&T stuff isn't interfering.
thanks!

I Thank you. That's what I heard, that (with one of the newer Samsung phones that was unlocked) once an att sim was in it, and linked to that carrier, it dl'ed the bloatware due to something with the att network and it also didn't allow them to use the hotspot for free. I hope that the person was either wrong or lying. I got granfathered in due to my old iphone play when I had a 3G (olllllllld) and the hotspot is the only real reason for me to need unlimited data.

I just received my Unlocked S8+ US version that I bought directly from Samsung.com today and I have ATT and I put in my ATT sim card and I selected the NExtgen APN, and i just tried the hotspot and works perfectly fine and I never had any ATT bloatware download, which should never happen with a non att unlock phone.
awesome!!!!! So, the unlocked version you have is a US At&t that is unlocked and not even the international version? Is it branded At&T on the phone, or no branding?
I've got the USA version, unlocked, no carrier branded and I can activate hotspot without carrier check. I'm on cricket

Got to 8 minutes 10 seconds
In this video, Linus Tech Tips reviews it and says that the first sim inserted in to it gets it to download all of the bloatware for that carrier and others have said that once the att bloat is on you also cannot use the wifi hotspot. I literally have the money in my pocket and am going to bestbuy in the morning before work to get the phone. I pray to God that I can use the wifi hotspot on it. Otherwise I will demand a refund and take it back. I cannot have a phone without the wifi hotspot for free. Anyone with att try the unlocked version by setting it up with their att sim? I'm freaking scared right now!

Get a cheap prepaid sim on T-Mobile or an MNVO of AT&T and use that sim first to set it up then swap with your AT&T, buy passing the while first sim issue.

I can confirm that there are no problems with hotspot. I have the US unlocked version. No AT&T bloatware at all was downloaded when I put the SIM card in. I use tether every day with no issues

I'm on sprint. Just activated phone today, and no bloatware installed. That being said, I cannot seem to start the hotspot. Every time I do, its just shouts itself off. Bluetooth tethering seems to stay on, although I have not tested it yet. Any ideas why that might be? Does sprint block hotspot even on unlocked phones?

Unlock note 8 does not support LTE on AT&T

Hello,
Can you guys who have the unlock note 8 and on AT&T network confirm that it does not support LTE?
I saw a review on Best Buy stating that he could not get it to work after numerous call to tech, and AT&T suggested they buy the AT&T version and unlock it.
I just bought the unlock version from Samsung and planning on using it on AT&T, I tether a lot in my car and if LTE is not available I will probably return it.
I am not going to paid almost $1000 for a phone that does not support 4G LTE

Exactly. Weird how it's not working. I had an unlocked version of the S8+ on AT&T which worked on the LTE+ network.
Composed on the Galaxy Note8
I have the factory unlocked version and I have LTE. Make sure when you activate your note they use and new sim.

Well, I am in the same boat as you. I bought unlocked directly from Samsung and put my AT&T sim from my AT&T branded S7 edge in thinking that it will just work. First I didn't even have data so I changed the APN and got data but only H+ speed at best. I did chat online at AT&T and the first time the tech said that I needed a new sim and I can get a free one at a local AT&T store. I reverted the phone back to stock without data connection and went to my local AT&T store. I told the guy there what the tech said and he took my phone and just mucked around with it and got data connection but only H+. He said it is probably the best this phone can do. I am like ??? But I didn't argue with him and left. I again went on chat at AT&T website and the tech did something on her end and eventually open a case for me. I waited 2 days and finally got an email saying that it is the area that I am in and that would be the best signal I will get. Again what the ????. I had LTE all along in the past at the same place, home. So after 2 more days, I again did chat with AT&T and this tech basically said I needed a new sim and he will send one to me for free. So now I am waiting for the new sim and hopefully with the new sim, I can register the sim with my IMEI and get LTE back. You should probably save all this trouble and ask for a new sim to start with. Good luck.

Thanks Xenshen, I think that will be my last resort. You said unlocked verizon variant, what is that? There is unlocked and there is branded unlocked directly from Samsung. My is not even branded. I guess either way works with flashing. Would love to get the direction if you don't mind. I will save it for the last resort after I try a new sim.

all Verizon phones are unlocked without the bootloader being able to be unlocked but if your flashing carrier firmware you can go from any carrier without voiding warranties and messing your phone up. The unlocked one from samsung just comes without the bloatware and from what ive read its still bootloader locked as well because of the snapdragon chipset in it. But if you put the att rom on it you wont have a issue and will get all the features including the lte enhanced services and all
---------- Post added at 11:49 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:47 PM ----------
ive flashed 3 different roms on it now so seems to be just like the s8 where all US models are the same minus the carrier oh and i removed most the bloat and just disbaled the apps i wont use
Well all I had to do is put in the sim from my V20, add the NXTGENPHONE APN and it was game on immediately.

I had the same issue
I received my phone last week and I was also having LTE problem. At first it was no service, then after some apn configs I was getting H, and H+ speeds. I had talked to multiple ATT reps and most said I would have to wait until they released the phone for it to be seem in there system. Since it was realeased on the 15th and the update came today, I thought it would fix it. It did not so I called ATT again. after about forty mins on the phone and many restarts later we finally got it to work. I now have LTE and LTE+ for ATT on my unlocked SM-n950u1 .

I think he said something along the lines of, " It's permissions were defaulting to 3g," or something similar. He may have also removed my device and re added it. He also mentioned that he was getting permission from a supervisor to make an official report since it seems to not be an isolated incident.
Attached is the post on best buy I was referring to, that's why I was scared since I have already ordered it.
But glad to hear it works and should work just like the locked version for LTE.
Getting the unlocked today, will goto local AT&T store and get a new sim card first thing. I will let you know how it goes.
