I'm using stock Android but I'd like to get some of the apps available with CM like Eleven, the camera and the gallery app. Is that possible without using an app like this CyanApps (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.maartendekkers.cyanapp). I'd prefer getting them elsewhere because I don't know the dev behind CyanApps, I don't know if he can be trusted and I don't know where he gets the apps.
Thanks!

Is there a way to prevent specific apps from running at all, ever? I have a Samsung Captivate and I have several apps that are open in the background upon boot-up and at other random times. Now I know that this is fine normally on the Android OS, but I do not use these apps EVER as I have better alternatives from the Market.
They are the built in TouchWiz versions of
E-Mail (I use the GMail app instead)
Music Player (I use DoubleTwist instead)
Video Player (I use RockPlayer instead)
Messaging (I use Google Voice instead).
Since I absolutely never use these apps, and even have them hidden from my application list in LauncherPro, I would love to disable them from ever running again. Unfortunately I cannot uninstall them as doing so apparently causes instability with the built in Samsung TouchWiz UI.
As a side note, I know this is concerning a specific phone to a degree, but I think it's more fitting as a general Android OS question. If not, mods please move it to the Captivate Q&A section.
Uninstall them. That is, if you're phone is rooted. If it isn't, probably not a whole lot of easy fixes.
Just search XDA for uninstalling apps on/from system. There are several threads floating around on the subject.

Some of the stock Samsung apps can be safely uninstalled. The ones I listed cannot be. That's why I'm trying to find a solution to prevent them from running.

have you tried looking for SGS tools on the market. I have used it to get rid of a bunch of apps that were stock. I dont think these will brick your phone if you get rid of the apps you discussed but you might want to do a back up just in case. The phone defenitely has to be rroted for this though
Try autostarts. Cheap paid app for what you are looking for.

i don't know anything about your platform, but I can tell you there is little difference between uninstalling, and preventing an app from being triggered by an event. Auto starts will do just that stop event / semaphore queues from accessing the resources it needs. Your requesting app will spin ( wait in queue ). You can how ever judiciously use autostarts to prevent activation by specific events ( of those apps which you don't like) which may be acceptable to the operation of those requesting apps ( the ones which cause the instability you mentioned). Trial and error. But autostarts is kind, it keeps the name of the semaphore which you blocked with a line through it ( so you can undo ). Just saying..
Just switched from victory to lithium and there is no media gallery. Is there a way to fix this or do I have to download one from the market. Or if someone could post a link for a good gallery I could download! Thanks!
more bugs
Another thing, it won't allow a Facebook sync...is anyone else experiencing these problems?
QuickPic > any oem media gallery known to Android
I don't use Facebook but I was having issues syncing Google music. Wifi wasn't working for me and the pattern lock was all messed up too.

You could extract a ROM and grab a gallery apk from that and copy it to /system/app folder. Just make sure and change to the correct permissions after you move it there.

I've no gallery either, and also the camera is giving me glitches. It seems like I can take pictures just fine, but am unable to record video. It force closes after every attempt. Pattern unlock is glitched for me as well.
changing roms

I dont know how you guys feel, but no facebook sync or stock gallery means no good. I tried fixing it and after hours of work I decided to try out the Sonya v2
Sorry this was my fault, dont know how I missed the gallery, will have that fixed by tonight after work. Facebook has synced with me everytime and I'm not having any issues with google music as well. I use these everyday and are a must as well. Patternlock on the other hand is a different story. I will look into it.
A note on Facebook, if you are trying to add the account like you do your Google account you can't. Just use the app from the market. It works well and I have found it more reliable this way
Had the same problems setting up yahoo, fb and twit from add accounts.I ended up getting apps from market worked out fine.
This will b a great rom when u get the gallery work out.Been running it for about 24 hours now with pretty heavy use and battery is at 27 not bad at all.installed at 95

JRW, are you experiencing the camcorder issues or is that just me? Also I just wanna say great ROM otherwise.
Edit: Also is there a way that you could get Contacts sync from the Facebook app to work? I've seen other Android phones do that with a non-modified Facebook app; I think there's something involved with blur that tells the app not to give us that option.

Yes I am and I'm hoping it is due to me forgetting to install the gallery in the Rom as everything was working fine on my test version. I will have an update out tonight after work.
I removed a lot of the blur accounts have you tried using just the app from the market? It has been working for me

I am using the app from market and that works just fine; except that it doesn't offer contact sync (on a non-blur phone the Facebook app usually offers an option for contact sync...)

The updated version will have all of the accounts added back to it...
I have a few apps that I've been using for a while that still work but aren't in the market anymore. I assume that developers can remove their own apps &I know Google removes apps if they have broken any rules. I haven't found a way to find out why they've been removed but I'd really like to know if any of these apps I have on my phone are posing any kind of security risk. Does anyone know if Google has some sort of online database or something that lists the apps & the reason they've been removed?
Thanks for any responses

If they did it would have been removed by Google like they have done before

if google removes it from the playstore because of security issues or malware, then they usually remove it from your device as well (yes the can)
I personally would like to se a message in that case, but i dont know if that will happen.
Hi everybody,
I now use a custom ROM based on CM 12.1 (Lollipop, Android 5.1.1) on my SGS4 i9505.
All in all it's fine - but I miss some of the features which Samsung adds to their app versions.
So I wonder if it is possible to add the original Samsung apps to my custom ROM, namely the contact and the SMS app.
Is it possible (without touchwiz etc.)? And if yes, how can I extract the apps from stock ROM?
Or even better, where can I download them?
Alternatively who can tell me other 3rd party contact apps which are able to link together contacts of several accounts and have good overview, search and editable features.
The original Android app is very confusing for me and also lacks above features.
I also tried contacts+ which is (in my sight) not much better...

Bad news
So the touchwiz framework is put deep into Samsung's Android Versions?
Not only a "framework" library? :crying:
The only reason I want the Samsung apps because the plain Android ones lacks some featrues.
So I'm sure there must be some 3rd party out there wich also have these - but currently I didn't find it
Very important for me ist the possibility to link together contacts with information in several account sources (phone, several carddav sources, google, whatsapp,...).
So that all available information of a contact can be seen in one place - without loosing the possibility to keep (and edit/move/copy) the different information at different source places...
Does anybody know such a contact / dialer app which does not need the touchwiz framework?
I think there is a possibility...

There is a possibility!
First download all apps from the internet
Then move them to the framework folder
Restart your phone
Done
Exdialer and chomp sms are my favourite alternatives. Maybe you should give them a try.
I use true dealer and yaata sms. Both have development forums on "apps and games" of xda, so you can writte to developers to ask something.
Of course both app are full of customization and very useful
I remember this app where it allows users to sort applications on touchwiz with awesome features like separating System Apps and User Apps by adding a page break and many other functions. But according to my search on the Internet and various 3rd party appstores, I found out that the author had a problem with KitKat roms and have never saw him developing furthermore since then.
Anyone know what happened to this awesome app or author?
Are there any app sorting apps that is similar like this?
If you don't know what app I'm talking about please drop me a reply here, I will include links for it.
Thank you!
