Install TWRP on S7 SM-G930F with flashify - Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions and Answers

Hello
I have a question. Can I install TWRP Recovery on S7 using flashify? Will I then be able to install mods like magisk and so without wipping all my data?
Thanks!

HI
TWRP recommends Odin but yes is possible to do it with flashify , regarding mods it should work...also if you put the mods on the SD card instead of the internal memory and use TWRP
Remember to swipe in TWRP to allow modifications......

Thanks for your fast answer.
But do I have to wipe my data EVERY time I want to install something with twrp? Can I flash things when I have everything on stock (bootloader, kernel etc.)

Not sure what you mean.....
You only have to format data ( apps , music , photos, backups...) if you want it available from TWRP ( MTP transfer for example or flashing mods from the internal memory) , if you backup to external SD or flash mods from External SD you do not need to format the internal data

Second part of your question...
yes , they are not located on the data partition so no need to wipe anything there to flash them

So, when I see it right, I don't have to wipe my data before installing when I have the flash the folders? And can I just swipe to allow system modifications and then do my stuff?
Remember: I have a s7 exynos!

In many youtubetutorials they are flasing something like no verity encrypt so that the phone can start. Do I need to do this?
Thanks!

You only wipe data if you want to use that partition with TWRP , for example to save your nandroid to the data partition or save a mod in the data partition and flash it from there ( you can also use the external SD for this) or transfer a file (MTP) while you are in recovery mode..... if you have no need for this then is not necessary to format the data , you do need to allow system modifications from TWRP to be able to flash mods

You only need that file if you format the data and get rid of the encryption

Wipped HTC One S C2, unable to mount /sdcard, need urgent help

I got still the TWRP running, can still work with All In One Tool, are able to transfer files with adb, don't have su permission and no acces to the sd card, can't install anything, RUU 1.11.161.133 .exe required or other solutions, always in TWRP unable to mount /sdcard please help
Go to the recovery and try mounting the sdcard as usb storage on windows. Then format the sdcard removable disk. Worked for me. Copy the rom on sdcard and flash from twrp and you'll be up and running in no time.

Thanks for reply,
actually this phone does not have a real sdcard, it's build inside. I cannot find this card under cmd and format
*facepalm* I know that! There is an option in recovery which lets you connect the phone to your pc via usb cable in data storage mode. Try that.

Thats correct. Its internal, which essentially means its just a seperate partition (formated in FAT32) in the internal memory of the phone. The link provided above should help you, and will allow you to reformat that partition if its corrupted. You have to work through the linux shell as it wont show up in windows if its corrupted. At the bottom of the instructions are even more simpler methods, assuming you are ok with wiping all the data on your phone. The reason those methods work too is because the stock recovery in your phone will also format the sd card when you choose to factory reset, etc (but you need to reflash the stock recovery to work). Check the post, it should all make sense.

Dont forget to flash a gapp too that is for your google play.
I had no problem with CWM until now but I needed an ext4 partition for a rom (slimkat) and CWM failed.
I then installed 4ext and everything worked. (except the ROM on my phone hehe)
So if you need an ext4 partition for your rom, I would not recommend CWM based on my experience.

It's an HTC Sensation. I tried first with CWM and rom manager. But the partition was not recognized when installing (Slimkat) .
Then, I found this about creating partition: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2125513
Where you can read:
These two methods are the best ones to use. Other means could result in sd-card damaging, or other problems. Do not use:
ROM Manager, CWM Recovery, Windows Minitool Partition Wizard etc.

And for me it happened to be true
(The SD was not damaged, just the partition not working).

The "partition" you're talking about there is SD partition, right? To use that partition you must format the partition's file system to ext4, not fat32 (default SD file system). Maybe it "didn't work," just the in the wrong file system.

Yes, correct. The conclusion is that I was able to make a correct ext4 partition with 4ext recovery only, I thought it could be useful to the OP regarding his question about CWM.

Except that all phone partitions are ext4 by default. It's the phone partitions OP is concerned of, not SD partitions. I think..
Are you saying that some recoveries have different file systems other than ext4?

He asked if the steps to install kitkat are the same and more info about CWM. I just explain the problem I had when I did exactly what the OP wants to do, in the same situation.
It would crash during the install because there was no ext4 partitions on the sdcard. I don't know why, this part I don't understand. I never had to do something like that until now. So after investigating the matter I realised that I had to create an ext4 partition (1GB) on my SD card. (it had 1 Fat32 partition)
I tried with different tools. CWM included. They failed. I stepped upon the post I mentioned before. I installed 4ext. I created a 1GB ext4 partition on the SD Card. The install was successful and I enjoy my phone again with KitKat. (but in the end I removed Slimkat due to some bugs and installed this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2530073, which works perfectly so far)
That's all about my experience installing a kitkat based rom which is the OP goal. As mentioned before, I don't know why it needed this ext4 partition for the installation. My knowledge does not go that far, but the result is there.

since u flashed kitkat in ur htc sensation and u hav done it right, u can guide me to do so......
here is what i understood regarding the kitkat rom
i have to to do partition of my SD card (the link was helpful !!!)
CWM version does not do any help for kitkat rom (i guess !! am still confused about CWM recovery because the link for one v's CWM 6.0 is dead and in Kitkat rom's link it does not say anything or about the CWM version how to flash it )
my question is
after partition, did you completed the "using the ext partition" and then you flashed it using CWM and what version of CWM did you use ?
and my CWM version is 5.8 should i use it to flash kitkat (without getting bricked) ??
Sorry for asking so many question. My roms thread does not have the details that i generally find in other thread. I want to flash Kitkat so badly.
It does not matter if the rom works or not, still its worth a shot. just want to make sure i do everything right from my side without damaging my handset.

Sorry.. Even I don't understand the question anymore. But as far as I know, ext4 partitions on an SDcard is never related to flashing ROMs.. It is only used for Link2SD and such..
Yes, so, somehow it looks like during the installation, these Kitkat roms were expecting an ext4 partition on the SD Card.
If you look in Internet, you can find things like that for example:
(Damn, my xda noob account does not let me post links, search youtube and use this video ID: ?v=bUMhn6geaUM
They talk about this ext4 partition on the SD card, why they do it and what they use to do it. (Partition Magic)
Maybe if I had just removed my SD card , the install script would not have tried to use the SD card, but let's not add more confusion
As I said, CWM (I had 5.8) did not work to create a correct ext4 partition on my SD Card. (the install failed again)
The funny thing is I even paid 2$ for CWM xd
I replaced CWM by 4ext recovery. website: 4ext.net (install the 4EXT Recovery Updater)
Then I created the ext4 partition on the SD Card and both kitkat roms I tried were installed successfully.
(In 4ext recovery, install from zip, select your rom zip, go.)
btw, I backed up everything before (but I guess it's obvious) , once, I had to reinstall my backup from recovery because it would not boot.

i got back my imei fixed through a local store. i tried everything which didn't work at that moment. now i have my imei and i used mtk droid tools to take a backup this time and tried the whole process again. i used sp flash tools and the zip method for increasing internal memory for installing color os rom. but it didn't work again.
the current status of my phone is that i am using stock rom which is rooted but all i wanted to ask is that did i mess up with my internal sd card which is actually not allowing me to install color os rom? or is it something else? because i did each and every step correctly each time.

as memntioned in that thread i installed the rom zip directly after that and rebbot system. i was supposed to get the bootloop at first which i got and then i did wipe data/factory reset>wipe cache>wipe system> wipe dalvik cache again and installed rom again. but i am stuck in bootloop.
i was reading the reviews in color os thread and it was mentioned to unmount cache and sytem before flashing i did that too but no luck.
so please let me know if i did anything wrong because thiis is all i have been trying.

where does the content of internal sd card goes when it is used as partition..... thw
abhimanyu bajaj said:
see.. what your computer labeled as internal SD .... titanium labeled as ext. sd okay? see. both have the same memory..
the sd in titanium backup is your sd card
the internal memory is the app memory...
try installing color os.... follow instructions..i should install.. otherwise ask the dev. in the rom forum

Figured out internal Sd card mount error clear solution.
Here's what i think you have done
You did a system partition with sptool and also tried zip like 507mb to 1gb or in between .
I had the same problem of lost internal sd card in file manager.
If you want it back or increase system partition try factory mode to format unmount error of internal sd card.
follow these steps.
1) take or keep a backup in sd card.
2) go into cwm recovery mode and flash 507mb partition zip or 1gb partition zip(507mb for undo partition and 1gb for partition)
3)To solve mount issue without external sd card go to factory mode after the flash.
select "Full test" option in it select memory it'll show 3 options
1 Format ext...
2 test pass
3 test fail
And it shows the space in yellow text in two sd card as 0 mb or any . Select the first option which will increase the space of internal sd.
After you'll just need to update or restore backup to successfully fix mount error for internal sd card either for partition or undo partition.
This worked for me when i just tried various format option to format the partition error.

internal storage and flashing

Ok so I'm having a brainfart here...
flashing a rom, you wipe, it clears out the storage, userdata, etc (all your personal stuff) everytime I do this, I plug my n5 in, open up win explorer and then start copying my folders off (takes soooo long to do this) then flash the rom...
boot up (start everything, wifi, accounts, etc..)
then copy all my stuff back (takes another good chunk of time, usually cause i can't just grab it all and wait the time, I have to move smaller chunks of files, documents, etc)
so my question is how do you all manage your internal storage?? It has become so painful to keep moving my data on/off/on my phone (used to just pull the sd card) I have dropbox sync/upload my pics, but everything else sits on the phone.. am i missing something..
is there a better way to move/copy my personal stuff quicker/easier so it doesn't get lost, but isn't so time consuming ??

So you tell me you wipe userdata/internal storage everytime you flash a new rom? You only have to wipe select data, cache, dalvik and system in TWRP. Not internal storage that's just a waste of your time
custom roms... yes, most want full wipes, then I had the storage issue (showing 16 vs 32) so wiped again...
(pretty much any flash, I get a storage mismatch and have to clean/wipe user to fix it, hence taking all my data off and putting it back on again)
@GtrCraft Internal storage isn't the same as sd card. Internal storage is where the system partitions are written to. Or I'm wrong?

You are wrong. There is a system, a data and a cache partition. The sdcard/internal storage is in /data/media so inside the data partition. But TWRP and probably other recoveries except stock have an option to wipe data without /data/media

Once, I've wipe Internal Storage in TWRP and phone didn't boot anymore. So, how is that?

That isn't right at all, which TWRP do you use. And do you use the one for hammerhead

In generally yes, but I'm not 100% sure which one I had at that particullary moment. But that's why I was confused. So I never use wipe Internal storage in TWRP anymore, because I thought that I will also get system wiped.
Thank you very much on your effort. Regards, Zagor

I have no idea, but that is generally the source of my woes on this issue.. I try to utilize dropbox and drive as much as possible but was wondering what everyone else does in lieu of copying every file off and back on after flashing and getting that error ( or others.)

Well, most people dont have the storage issue that often so they don't have to copy regurlarly. Maybe flashing a complete factory image will fix your problem
think I did that at one point... I'll do it again just to make sure since I have everything already off it at the moment.. tnx

Get storage.xml file from your stock rom and put it in /data/system/storage.xml in your current rom.
This may fix your internal storage problem.
Take nandroid backup first before trying this because I am not sure this will work or not.
This ROM.....
This ROM is not properly built by the developer, so you need flash another trusted and stable custom ROM like lineage is and aosp.
Visit this XDA thread to find stable ROM for your device.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/re...on-roms-kernels-recoveries--other-development
Can you explain further on this pls, I have a similar issue here.
