Ok so I'm having a brainfart here...
flashing a rom, you wipe, it clears out the storage, userdata, etc (all your personal stuff) everytime I do this, I plug my n5 in, open up win explorer and then start copying my folders off (takes soooo long to do this) then flash the rom...
boot up (start everything, wifi, accounts, etc..)
then copy all my stuff back (takes another good chunk of time, usually cause i can't just grab it all and wait the time, I have to move smaller chunks of files, documents, etc)
so my question is how do you all manage your internal storage?? It has become so painful to keep moving my data on/off/on my phone (used to just pull the sd card) I have dropbox sync/upload my pics, but everything else sits on the phone.. am i missing something..
is there a better way to move/copy my personal stuff quicker/easier so it doesn't get lost, but isn't so time consuming ??

So you tell me you wipe userdata/internal storage everytime you flash a new rom? You only have to wipe select data, cache, dalvik and system in TWRP. Not internal storage that's just a waste of your time
custom roms... yes, most want full wipes, then I had the storage issue (showing 16 vs 32) so wiped again...
(pretty much any flash, I get a storage mismatch and have to clean/wipe user to fix it, hence taking all my data off and putting it back on again)
@GtrCraft Internal storage isn't the same as sd card. Internal storage is where the system partitions are written to. Or I'm wrong?

You are wrong. There is a system, a data and a cache partition. The sdcard/internal storage is in /data/media so inside the data partition. But TWRP and probably other recoveries except stock have an option to wipe data without /data/media

In generally yes, but I'm not 100% sure which one I had at that particullary moment. But that's why I was confused. So I never use wipe Internal storage in TWRP anymore, because I thought that I will also get system wiped.
Thank you very much on your effort. Regards, Zagor

I have no idea, but that is generally the source of my woes on this issue.. I try to utilize dropbox and drive as much as possible but was wondering what everyone else does in lieu of copying every file off and back on after flashing and getting that error ( or others.)

Well, most people dont have the storage issue that often so they don't have to copy regurlarly. Maybe flashing a complete factory image will fix your problem
think I did that at one point... I'll do it again just to make sure since I have everything already off it at the moment.. tnx

Today I've tried your theory, but after I wiped internal in TWRP 2.8.6.1 phone actually boots, but only black screen appear. How's that?

So I'm about to install Tiamat's new ROM (I really want the init.d scripting functionality, plus it can't hurt to get up-to-date) but I can't remember if wiping my user data wipes out the /sdcard/ mount on my xoom. I've got 15gbs in there in all kinds of random stuff and I'd rather not wipe it if I don't have to.
What I THINK is that the Dalvik/Cache/User data wipe that I do before I install the ROM will do what it would on my phone - simply wipe everything that isn't on the /sdcard/ partition. Is this correct? I sure hope so.
Yes, that is correct. It won't touch your SD card.
Just to be certain...
Ok, but to be clear, I don't actually HAVE an sdcard, just the bigass bit of internal memory mounted AS /sdcard/. It won't mess with that right?

If you are asking about the user data wipe you will have to do I order to flash thetiamat rom,
ummm yes, it will wipe that (internal storage) but not wipe your external/removable sdcard.
Damn. Ok, well, I'll just back all of that up to the computer then. It'll take a while.
You need an sdcard to install the rom though.

Nope
Ok, so, like I thought, the "wipe data/factory reset" option in ClockWorkMod Recovery does NOT format the /sdcard/ partition, even though it is actually physically located on the internal storage.
Because of this I was also able to use the internal storage to store the tiamat*.zip rom file and flash from the internal storage mapped to /sdcard/. I'm now going to attempt to restore all of my settings and apps via Titanium Backup.
Thanks anyway guys. You did inspire me to do a full backup of my /sdcard/ partition onto my computer at least.
Sorry guys. I was way off. I was even smug about it. Well, as it turns out, you do need an SD card. Check out my post here to see what happened (a lot of dumb bad stuff): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1152121
Good day,
I recently flashed a new version of jellybean to my HTC one x. I was going to follow the regular method i use (wipe data, clear cache, push boot.img to device, flash rom, flash google apps), however, before i flashed, i realized my sd card was corrupt. So i used this method (which worked for me previously and was posted on an external website):
Download a recovery tool, extract recovery img, push with adb fastboot to device, factory reset on hboot, device restarts and fixes corrupts sectors in sd, reboot, push twrp.img to device, restart in recovery, and now you can reflash.
to fix it.
The method asked me to use the "factory reset" option on HBOOT and i did. (I also did this the last time i flashed a rom, with no problems)
However, this time, after hitting that option, i went into TWRP to flash zip and i saw absolutely no files or folders in my sd card. However, i could still mount the sd card and transfer files. But apparently, all my previous files (music, pictures, video etc) were deleted.
Is there anyway i could restore these old files?
Thank you.
Nope, you quite thoroughly wiped everything with that approach.

you could google some data recovery software. i would avoid writing to the sd card though until you do.
i dont have any suggestions personally, i think i used one before that came with ultimate bootcd... it may not have though.
theres no easy way. and i warn you, it takes a while.

I'm not sure how completely a factory reset in bootloader corrupts the sdcard (and remember this is flash memory, not a hard drive). Presumably something is still there but I think you're unlikely to be able to recover music or video files in useable format no matter what data recovery software you use, if it's even useable in this case.

Ah yeah i didnt take the corruption into account. under normal circumstances though flash memory should be recoverable all the same.
This happened to me. I tried recovering my invaluable photos with many different programs.. Found squat. It essentially writes 0 to every sector "permanently" deleting things from the average user. If the same was done on a hard drive, some *may* be recoverable by professionals. But in this case you aren't going to get much recovered, if at all.
Sent from my Nexus 4
if you never did the sd card repair you might of recovered something. now i doubt it, you could try Ontrack EasyRecovery which is one of the best recovery apps, also try GetDataBack, and Recuva. those are the only recovery apps i use, try all possible recovery methods in those apps the vary in results so dont give up with a single scan. make sure not to write to sdcard again. you most likely will need to do some sorta raw scan since you killed you partition so programs wont be able to use it i believe.
Hi guys I was wondering how does TWRP handle devices with no SD card ? Everytime I want to flash a ROM I have to wipe data does this wipe everything on your phone ? Do I make backups after every flash ?
The phone has a internal storage eMMC 5.0 of 16GB/64GB.
No it does not wipe your internal storage.

Yes it treats the virtual sdcard as an actual sdcard, and will not format it.
It works this way even with devices with external sd cards. Internal memory is not touched.
What you're actually working on is only system partition.
/data/media is where your personal storage is. It's symbolically linked to /sdcard as well for old apps the need it. When you factory reset (format /data) it excludes /data/media. Nothing is lost. You also don't need to wipe every time you flash a ROM. At least you don't unless you are changing to a different ROM just not when updating, though it's probably advisable to at least wipe dalvik cache.

If your using twrp there is wipebwhich does a factory wipe which wipes the data and cache. Doesnt touch your actual data. If you go to advanced wipe in wipe you can choose whatever your want. And wipe whole phone. But if you do that you will need to backup and then sideload or use USB otg to flash a ROM back....
I just finished installing the latest ROM (YOG4PAS1N0) from here:
[ROM][YOG4PAS1N0] Cyanogen OS 12.1 [Rooted][TWRP flashable][NEW OTA]
http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-one/development/rom-cyanogen-os-12-1-t3186593/page10
and it works amazing!!! No issues so far...while I was doing it I decided to use TWRP 2.8.6.0 to do a back up. I know that the following is a very "old school" way of backing my data but what I used to do is just save all the files in the exact same way my OPO is shown via the windows file system, and so I used to cut and copy .....place in a folder and done.... I have every single picture I have EVER taken since I owned a camera phone in 2007 but thats besides the point,,,I backup up my data via TWRP and I noticed that it created a 10GB partition. I am ok with it cause I keep a pretty clean phone...I have 10 apps at most and some pictures and videos.
I was wondering in the interest of recuperating that 10GB is there a way to unpartition it? my back up is 2.67 GB large and as you guessed it, I saved it on my PC....so I could do with out it on my phone. BY the way I didn't do a system or data wipe when I installed the ROM...flash and dalvik and cache wipe....I figured if I screwed up, I could do a FULL FORMAT and copy paste the files I wanted. But the update worked flawlessly ..except for the 10GB "missing"....
This is not an emergency, I can live without the 10GB I was just curious.........I have 54GB out of which I am only using 9GB...plenty left
Thanks for any help and for taking the time and reading this...
I did search for the answer but most users have other partition issues such as not loading or not finding it....I also google TWRP partitions and I got a lot of "how to use it" stuff...but nothing on how to "un partition"

What do you mean when you say it created a 10gb partition? TWRP doesn't create a partition when it makes a backup so I'm confused as to what you mean by that.

There is no 10GB partition. When a device says that there is 64 GB of storage, a bit of it is lost in formatting. It does not mean that when you plug in your phone you will get 64GB of storage. Additionally, there are several partitions, including data and system that are not visible to the user without root (or in recovery). These partitions also take up space on your phone (adding up to around 10GB of lost space), and are not visible when you plug in your phone. This is why your phone only shows 54 out of 64GB in the storage menu in settings, mine does as well. If you did have a 10GB partition on your phone, your phone would show 44GB when plugged in. I believe you can make the system partitions smaller, but its not recommended. This is simply off my memory so if I misunderstood the question or said anything wrong please be welcome to correct me.

I figured it was a 10GB partition because I was 10GB short (64GB out of the box vs 54GB) what I have, even though I now that OS and apps take up space. So what is the actual partition size that is created when TWRP creates a back up? The size of said back up? ....my mistake...
your explanation cleared it up. If I remove the back up from my phone will I recover that HDD space? or is it already saved for future back ups?

Your backups are created on the visible portion of the data partition, in a folder called TWRP. No partition is created during a backup. You will not gain more than the available space on your phone by deleting the backup.

TWRP doesn't create a partition, it simply creates a folder in your internal storage to place your backups in. That folder will only ever be the size of your backup(s). The moment you delete/move a backup you have that space free again, they're just like any other file that consumes space on a drive (it only consumes space while it's actually there).

I have just bought an S7 (SM-G930F) after years and years with my trusty S3 9-9300...

I have an odd senario. I can access the card and I can andd and make changes to content, BUT there are some things I can not do, such as change ownership and permissions, but more importantly, I can not back up using Titanium Backup. TB says the card is fuill, but further investigation it won't allow it to store to the card. It says it is read only.
How do I fix this very annoying delema, any one, please?

Hi
did you do all the steps posted in the TWRP page , specially Wipe Data?
Well I didn't follow those steps, but I did wipe the data partition just by chance.
What do you think ithe problem is and do you think it can be fixed without yet another rebuild - I have done so many to get the phone working.

Hi
I think that the data partition is still encrypted or not totally decripted that is why you do not have full access
TWRP Op step 10
Only if you want internal storage or data to work in TWRP:
Go to [Wipe] -> [Format Data] (not advanced wipe) -> type "yes".
WARNING: This will wipe your internal storage, disable encryption, and factory reset your phone!
Go to [Reboot] -> [Recovery].
You need to format data ( no just wipe) to get full access
I would try to install again TWRP ( all steps) but of course the problem is your data will be gone
OK, but how does that help the SDCard?????
I ask as I want to make absolutly sure as I now have no backup as I had deleted all the TB files.

Hi
Did you see @*Detection* comments , FAT is not the same as FAT32 , format the sd card in your PC and make sure you select FAT32
SO using my rooted file explorers, the issue seems to be that SDcard is owned by root and is rwxr-xr-x and I can't change it...

Take the card out of the phone, put it in a reader and connect to PC USB
Use something like minitool partition wizard free to delete all the partitions on the card, create a new primary partition, format to FAT32
Put it back in the phone and see how you get on

Hi
+1 @*Detection*
Also you are 100% you are root ? check with something like Root Checker to make sure
I had using gParted - I use Linux machines, still the same and I re rooted several times. and via other rooted S3s. Same.
I think that this is an ownership/group issue. The mount directory is "storage" owned by root, and it is interesting the two of my root file managers see it and the card as rwx-rwx-rwx and others as rwx-r_x-r__
and I suspect that apps like TB, parted (partition manager), Apps to SD, etc. are seeing the same. However, even with the file manager apps that see full access I can not change ownership or rw privileges..... REALLY ODD!!!!!!
SOLVED!!!! Hope this helps others.
In TWRP, Advanced, File Manager.... Find the SD Card, the change the permisions to 0015 This is the SDCard Group/ownership. It all works great now.
To tidy up I need to create a new mount point in / or storage and then a line in fstab. Know how to do that in Linux/Ubuntu, but not in Android even though it is one the same.
Any helps Please?????
