[Q] g2x reboot loop

Hi techie friends,
My unrooted g2x is stuck in a reboot loop. Before I do a hard reset (power/volume down), I would like to retrieve my photos, which are stored in the internal memory. Is there a way? [Here is what I tried so far: I tried a soft reset (battery out) with no success. I connected the g2x to my PC but it is invisible. I tried holding just the volume down key and got a "s/w upgrade, please wait while upgrading..." screen. Is there any hope to retrieve my photos? I googled the issue and found nothing useful.] Thank you in advance for trying to help me! Catherine

hmmmmm, this is an interesting one. the very first thing i would do is get that phone backed up. you will need to flash a custom recovery(clockwork mod) in order to make a backup. search the development section. once you have a backup on your sdcard, i'd copy it to my pc. thinking.......
from recovery, you can try "fix permissions".
reboot. if that doesn't work, go back to recovery>advanced>wipe dalvik cache. reboot. if that doesn't work, try recovery again>mounts and storage and mount everything listed. see if the drives open up under "my computer" on your pc. for me, that last option doesn't work. but it could just be my pc or my recovery version.

or, you could flash any rom you want, and then mount the phone to your pc. then try running a data recovery program on the internal sdcard.

forget the link i posted above. it seems it has trouble reading the internal sd. but i'm running get data back right now. it seems like it's working fine. if these pictures are absolutely worth saving, you might have to dish out some cash for a data recovery app. but always use a trial version first to make sure it works. and once you flash a new rom, keep the phone off until you are ready to run a recovery app. the less that gets written to the drive, the better your chances for retrieving those pics.

I'm pretty sure a hard reset doesn't touch anything located on the sdcard. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but it should only format the 1GB partition where the android system is installed and apps are stored. You will basically be starting with a fresh install, but should still have anything stored on your sdcard still intact.

Can't you just mount the internal memory via the latest Clockwork Recovery which is as I recall 4.0.0.2?
It worked the last time (the same option with the same trouble) on my Vibrant 3G

Actually, you are right. HR will not erase the SD content and I also think that it will leave the the internal NANDs partition intact. But I dont know where the pics in this case are stored.
Correct if I'm wrong.

Camera pics are stored under DCIM on the sdcard. Really any user created content/files (pics, music, videos, documents, etc) are on the memory card and shouldn't be touched by a hard reset. So I think youre in the clear if that's the route you go.

[Q] Clean Rom 5.0 and internal vs external SD card question

Hello all,
I have a VZW Galaxy S3 and am using Scott's CleanRom 5.0
I noticed yesterday that my internal card is 2gb from being full. My external SD is a 32gb and only has a few pictures and some music on it. So I have been wandering around the phone settings trying to figure out how to move my apps to the sd card and free up some space. Can anyone enlighten me?

The only app that works is link2sd, on the market. But one draw back is you need to reconfig your external sdcard to do this. Reformat and create 2 partions on your sd card, first partition should be fat32, this where you keep your stuff (music/video/pics) and the second partition is for your apps. link2sd will move your app to the second partition on your sdcard and create a reference so your OS would know where to find it.
Note: If you already have stuff on your sdcard, you can keep them by resize the first partion then create the second partion. This way you still have your data intact.

I think you are better off moving data instead of the apps. You can get your music, images, and videos and free up a lot of space (Samsung camera can default to save on external card, 4.2 Canberra doesn't have that setting as far as i can tell). Advantage of this is that even if you brick / break / wipe your phone you can still retrieve your images and music. Pop the card in a new phone and everything is still there. More than that, have titanium backup on the external card and easily transfer non-system apps to the new phone.

First I guess I need to explain that I still use iTunes in conjunction with Tune Sync for my music so back up isn't an issue for music. My photos are uploaded to SmugMug so they too are backed up. It just seems that my data and apps are hogging the internal SD.
I have TB Pro installed but admittedly don't know much about it yet as I have converted from the Dark Side (IOS). So, how do I get it to do what I need? Perhaps there is a tutorial somewhere on YouTube I could look up.
EDIT: I found the setting in Camera storage but no option to change it. I just says "SD Card" I assume that is internal SD?

You have to do it manually. It's pretty simple, may take around 20min. Just download the "gparted" iso image, then use imgburn to burn this image on your cd, reboot with cd as default boot device instead of your harddisk, once you booted into gpart operating system, there will be a gui you could use to partion your sdcard, first resize your existing partion, then create a new one from the unallocate partion as ext4. Remember both partion have to be PRIMARY and set the ext4 to boot (once you create the ext4, just right click, select flag then select boot).

Thank you for all of this. I won't be able to do this until I return where I can burn the image. Looks fairly simple and I will give it a go when I return to work.

You could always plug your phone into your computer and drop and drag the files you want over to your external card.

You only can move video/music/pictures/backup files etc.. to your ext sdcard, but you cannot move your apps to external card. Your apps will stopped working. Link2sd allowed you to install all your downdoad apps to your SDcard (most of them, some apps required to stay internal, like widgets etc...)

I should have been more clear. What I suggested was just for backing up files in case the internal memory were to get wiped, example being if a new ROM was flashed with Odin, back to stock, etc. Thanks.

I did more research prior to moving them manually and found that what you just posted would have that affect. So, I still haven't done anything. My computer is old and not capable of burning a disc so I need to use a work computer but will have to do it after hours.
On a semi- related matter, since flashing CR 5.0 my settings for "Nearby Devices" is grayed out. I have been using this in conjunction with viewing photos on my TV. Any thoughts on why this might have happened? I re-flashed without success in gaining access.

I believe you need to install Allshare in order for this option to work.

Is there a way to download and install the Allshare app separately? I didn't choose it when doing the CR5.0 install. I looked on the playstore, but don't see it. I was going to re-install the ROM, but would rather just load the app if i could.

Only way I know is to flash ROM again. I don't use it. You don't have to wipe data just cache and dalvik.

EDIT: Nope, when opened it states: Allshare Framework not installed application will exit

Well, it was worth asking the question. I will be reflashing the ROM tonight. I just noticed a issue with what I believe would be the KindaCrap mods I installed. I removed the clock from the notification bar, and changed the battery to just a percentage, and the percentage was really slow while charging like it wasn't taking a charge. After rebooting I was near 60%, when it was showing me 20% before the reboot. I think a fresh install will be good.

Accidentally clicked 'FACTORY RESET' in HBOOT

I accidentally hit the FACTORY RESET option in HBOOT, and it seems the phone just rebooted into TWRP without doing anything. However it seems my SDcard is now empty and unformatted. Earlier I had two "Internal SDcard" options in TWRP\Mount but now I just have one, and if I try to click on Mount USB storage, the removable disk appears as an unformatted disk on my PC. Is there any to fix this? Is the SD gone for good or can I recover the data?

Run a Ruu and your phone should be fine again (dont forget to relock your bootloader)

I made a nandroid luckily, but I just realised that the problem is due to the sdcard not actually being able to mount. It says
E:unable to mount '/sdcard'
I'm using TWRP 2.5, maybe I will try with 2.3.1.0.
EDIT: Okay that didn't help. If I run a RUU won't it erase my SD card? I don't want to lose what's on there, is there any way to fix it and be able to mount it again?

Bottom line: I need the data on my SD... is there any way to recover it?

No its gone sorry and no need for ruu just flash stock recovery and factory reset again.

Ten years of data just destroyed within the blink of an eye.

reformat the sd card and use recovery tools (google for them). most of your stuff will be easily brought back from the dead.

I did. It seems everything on the card was nuked. I tried about ten different recommended apps, none of them could find a single file even with deep searches.

It easily could have been downloaded data. I'm really sorry to hear about your loss, but always keep a copy of your SD card on your PC, no matter what.

before going through the trouble of an RUU, if you can see the unformatted disk from your computer just try formatting it there into a FAT32 partition like you would any other drive. This has worked for folks successfully. But as for data recovery....

Dang that sucks... was there some sort of confirmation before starting the wipe? I've always been paranoid that I might fat finger it randomly and it just wipes without some kind of second check

Reflash the recovery img from fastboot then boot into recovery, you should be able to mount sd

Well it's official. All my data is forever gone. And no there was no notification, I hit "FACTORY RESET", and it just paused for a second then rebooted into TWRP with my SD instantly destroyed. I tried every possible trick in the book. The problem for me wasn't just getting it to mount and work again, I could have done that in 20 seconds. The problem was to try and get it back WITH all my data, which I failed.
In the end, I made a RAW disk image backup of the sd card partition which for some bizarre reason ended up with a file that was 6 MB in size instead of 10 GB... I knew my data had somehow got nuked. I decided to just reformat it (Quick Format) as FAT32 on the PC, then I ran a host of data recovery programs, even those that were specialised in finding stuff from formatted drives. None of them could even find ONE file. But after format I was able to use it as normal.
I have really no clue how the entire drive was nuked within a fraction of a second, even all the data on it, but it is what it is.
On the bright side, for some reason my phone seems MUCH faster now, especially when installing apps, and the battery seems to last noticeably longer too.

Hmm. Maybe I should do it too lol.
You should automatically upload your photos or files somewhere. Mine upload to Dropbox so if anything bad happens, nothing too bad can go wrong.

It's hard to do recover because normal format recovery might not work but you can try the old ver of Easy Recovery Pro 6.x(I don't know why but the lastest ver seems removed RAW recovery) and use the RAW recovery, it usually could find some stuffs. You can also try out Diskgenius.

I am amazed at how little free space I have remaining on my 32GB N5. It shows 26.8GB total space, and I realize some is used for overhead.
Running stock rom and really not that many additional apps, and no pictures, movies, or music on the phone, I am at around 8GB free space remaining.
The phone’s storage tab reports:
Total Space: 26.08 GB
Available: 8.00 GB
Apps: 1.69 GB
Pictures & Videos: 1.19MB
Audio: 304KB
Downloads: 1.8MB
Cached Data: 44.09MB
Misc: 2.96GB
When I look in Misc, 2.43GB of the 2.96 is TWRP nandroid backups, 538MB is TI Backups, the rest is insignificant. Adding up all of what is shows as used totals about 3GB. Add the 8GB available, you have 11GB. So what happened to the other 15GB?
I have installed a utility to help me analyze space usage, and it shows the biggest space user is TWRP, with 2.4GB in backups. Those are important to have and I don’t begrudge the space, but man, this is supposed to be a 32GB phone.
One problem with disk space analyzers is that they tend to look for large files, but you can have 10,000 small files that will occupy more total space than a few large ones.
Those of you who are running relatively stock, how much free storage space do you have on your 32GB Nexus 5?

No problems with storage here. I'm on stock with custom kernel, 1 nandroid backup. I have about 16.5GBs left, where about 8GB is my music and the other 2-3 are my apps and the nandroid backups.

When I went to 4.4.2 I loaded 4.4 fresh and the side loaded 4.4.2.. Not saying you should do that.. But it will reset all the space on the phone

Thanks for the help, folks. I whacked it all the way back to stock, and installed the factory 4.4.2 image, then unlocked, installed twrp and supersu, and I am back in business with tons of free space. I have all my apps installed and now it shows over 23GB available.
I still have no idea where that 15GB went, but I figured whacking it was easier than troubleshooting it.

The "missing space" in the mass storage window is all the stuff on the /mnt/shell/emulated/ folder, outside of the /0/ (sdcard) directory.
For example, Nandroid Backups are stored there normally (at least CWM stores them on /mnt/shell/emulated/clockworkmod/ so they don't get wiped with the data on /0/). If you got your backups inside the /0/ folder you're in danger...
Check with the "diskUsage" app, on the root section, "mnt/shell/emulated" and you'll see what do you have there using your space (/obb/ is a symlink to /0/Android/obb/ and isn't using any space there really),

Thanks much. That diskUsage app is very cool, much better than the one I paid for.

nandroid backup create a new file each time you back up, so if you back up alot, you will found that the back up size is huge, just delete some old dated back up and keep the lastest one is ok

Where as this is the common lost space issue, its not so they don't get wiped. Its just easier to leave them there than detect if you're on a /0 device and dynamically set it. Twrp and philz do though.
Custom recoveries don't wipe /0 anyway - they run rm -Rf with an exclusion on 0.

Are you saying that CWM and so started saving backups out of "/sdcard" (now /0/), and now when you wipe on them they wipe everything (including their backups that are outside of /0/) but /0/?
It has no sense. They'd have failed big time if so...

I'm saying in the CWM source code for FUSE devices, /sdcard is mounted to /data/media - which was fine until android 4.2 which brought multi-user support. So even though other recoveries have moved with the times and updated their mount point to be /data/media/0, CWM simply didn't bother changing. It's not because they're "protecting from wipe" (in fact CWM doesn't wipe /sdcard anyway, only stock recovery does that), it's just they never updated it. That's why the backups are "outside" of /sdcard. No other reason.
Having backups outside of /sdcard has it's downfalls too. You cannot easily copy data from /sdcard to computer. Or copy a backup back to the device that can be restored.

Then okay, they didn't even bother to update, but as a result, the backups folder is outside the /0/ media mount point, and so, any application that wipes the real /sdcard mount point (/0) like the stock recovery as you say, won't wipe them.
Thanks for the explanation tho. I don't understand why they didn't even move a finger, but as a result the backups are more protected if you keep changing stuff and you like cleaning /sdcard (real /0 ) without touching the outside /mnt/shell/emulated folder (which contains vital data like said backups or the copy of the EFS folder usually).

You can recover/push them easilly with adb tho.

adb just isn't as convenient. But yes they are more protected but not by design. But also it has a problem in that your storage menu doesn't show true breakdown of space being used.

Yeah.. but that drawback is minor. I would opt for a simple solution: Some root variation of the used space. Either:
a) A mod that makes the storage option to include all the stuff on /data/media/ including everything outside /0 .
b) Using another program that shows the real usage.
I don't really think that nandroid backups are "user data" per se, since this is as vital as the system itself for the user. Its logical to have it protected somehow :fingers-crossed:.

Its protected by the user not being an idiot. If they are an idiot, losing their backup is karma

[Q] Galaxy S4 (rooted) - Out of Internal Storage (...but I am not)

OK...I have a rooted Sprint Galaxy S4, and keep getting "Storage Space Running Out" message !
The thing though is, that I should have tons of internal storage left. I have flashed 3 different ROMs, and after a few days I get the message again. I can erase some apps to free up space, and half a day later same problem. I can't even get my apps on the phone, due to space issues and I also can't put them on the external SD (not with a specific APP to do it for me, nor can I move them manually, because the button is simply not there in the Storage or APPs SETTINGS menu).
Every time I flash a new ROM I clear data, dalvic....full factory reset....but end up with the same result!
Could someone please help out with a fix or solution with this very annoying problem.
P.S.: ....yes, I have searched tons on this forum and others, but nothing has worked for me yet!

....ANYONE ????

Looking at images you included it looks like apps & data takes only 1 GB space . There must be some junk in internal storage (may be old .asec files , thumbnails etc). Attach the screenshot of sd storage also . I should see where the data is stored in your current rom .

I flashed old Nandroid of SACS ROM 4.3....so it would be a stock rom screenshot now, and all you would see is that there is 18Gig memory left on the SD card!!!
I had to reflash Nandroid because I traveled and I wasn't getting a signal on my previous rom! I do now...but the problem remains, or actually is worse, but at least my phone works to make calls (no txt or email, because storage space is too low).
In either case, the SD storage has plenty of room, but I don't think that this was ever an issue!....I think it is the phone itself, but maybe there is a fix and I would prefer that over taking it in for many reasons!

Copy all required data from internal storage to sd card and format internal storage from custom recovery (CWM/mount/format emmc or TWRP/wipe/advanced/emmc) and reboot.

i want you to try stock rom for few days and check

I wiped everything again and did factory reset...
copied everything from internal storage to a computer...
formatted data and system (twice)
wiped again, formatted data and system again....
flashed a sprint stock rom
same problem.... I have 860MB of 16GB unused space available!!!!
when I check though, my system data (bare essentials of what is left) is only 348MB....there is 647MB used for apps....the rest is clean!!!
I am still not sure where all the storage went! Could my internal storage be corrupt or broke???
Thanks for the ideas, I will try anything!!!

Try flashing your stock rom again.

I told to format internal storage (emmc) and not data and system partitions. Try that
