Hi, so I bought the Honor 8 FRD-L04 (US version) and from the beggining I have a problem that drive me nuts! The volume on this phone suck. By Bluetooth or by the headphone jack, nothing is different. I've tried the same songs and headsets with my old OnePlus One or my Alienware laptop and the volume is a lot more louder. On this phone the volume is up to the maximum and the music just begin to be loud.
I try everything I could imagine, except resetting it. What I do wrong with this?
I even tried to talk the customers services but they this isn't a problem of the phone! They said that I need the original headset or it will not work! So I said to them that the phone you buy from Newegg doesn't come with the original headset in the box...
Anyway hope someone will have the solution! Thanks
I think what people interpret as loud is subjective. I came from the Galaxy Note 7 and I feel the sound is comparable. The Note 7 had a more tinny sound due to the water resistance but it was clearer. The Honor 8, I feel is as loud but distorts at increased volume on calls (pressing volume up once more at the max volume) and sometimes in YouTube videos with the highs (mids and lows are OK). Using headphones, I have never been one to use volume past 3/4. It just starts hurting my ears.
You may want to try to go into Best Buy or someplace that has the phone on display and test it out compared to yours. Maybe you have a defective unit. Good luck!
If you are rooted, try Viper4Android. If not, there are plenty of music players with powerful amps in the Play Store. I recommend JetAudio and PlayerPro.

Note that I never talked about the speaker on the device itself. Always by auxiliary cord or Bluetooth. You didn't understand what I'm trying to say: on my OnePlus one at 3/4 of the volume it hurt my ear, on this phone, when the volume maxed out, the loudness is comparable to OnePlus one at 40%.
Hope it make my problem more clear now.

Thanks for the proposition but i already try every player i could (including a paid one: Power Amp). Its not an application problem but maybe a ROM or hardware problem I now I try to find where it come from because customer support just won't help me.
Thanks

Have you tried with another unit just to check if you got a defective unit?
Also a backup, factory reset and restore?
Are you on the B150 firmware? The update notes said they improved something with audio playback.
In relatively quiet environments I have to turn down media volume to around half or it seems needlessly loud to me. I have a hard time hearing in noisier environments. Calls have been fine (I typically only make ~1min long calls that are straightforward with the person I'm speaking with already knowing why). Youtube playback can get drowned out by passing cars/trucks or my work's incessant, ****ty music.

Yes I saw these changes when I first updated it. Calls are ok I guess, but the multimedia volume is lacking of power for me. There is one thing I now is weird is when I put my headphone port on mono audio (in accessibility option), the power become more louder! That's why I'm thinking it's a firmware bugs but aren't sure of this enough.
Anyway thanks again

In conclusion it should be a firmware bug.

Definitely a software problem if an update caused it. The best thing I can think of is to root and install Viper4Android, see does that make a difference (Only attempt this if you know what you're doing!)
Sorry I couldn't be of more help

I totally understand what you mean. I've noticed it on my headphones in particular. I guess it's just a part of the phone and that rooting is the only solution.
Unless it is caused after a software upgrade, its a hardware problem. Try to replace it.

Every manufacturer will try to convince you. You should ask them again and again.
If you are not good in English, take a friend with you and speak.
Compare with any other Honor 8 phone with yours.
Did you go to the service centre by yourself? Or spoke through a call.. If you have gone with the second option, I would say that first option is far better to make him understand.

Well I'm pretty good to understand in English. To speak it's more har for me but up to today I've been able to be understood. I called them multiple times even to a higher rank employee. Here in Canada we do not have any real support because Honor isn't present here... They are only in the US, so I did not get the free 3 months screen waranty. Plus, going to a service center by myself? The only one is in Ontario. It's about 5 hours of traveling in a car, so I think that by calls is my best option. Anyway thanks for the help.
This week I will backup my data and reset it after.

Didi you take it to the service center for this specific issue or for something else ? What did they say about the issue ?
I'm beginning to become obsessed with this issue, so for the past 2 days I've been listening carefully to that noise and it sounds to me that it's not the speaker that's making the noise, but it's like the noise is coming from the phones housing...It's like something's vibrating when the speaker reaches a high pitch sound...
Also, I've been trying to see if my friends have this issue also on other Nexus S and Galaxy S (since it's the same hardware - with some extras ) phones, but this doesn't happen on their phones, however the volume on their phones is a lot lower than mine.

I spoke today with a guy that fixes phones for a living and he told me that the issue is the filter from the earpiece. The phone might've suffered a bump at the store when the people there handled it and that messed with the filter. He said that I can take it to the Samsung service to get it fixed or I can leave it like this... He said it doesn't get worst in time if the issue doesn't get resolved...
this happens on and off with my Nexus S 4g...it drives me insane!!!
I did notice one thing. If I hold the phone kind of tightly and squeeze the backplate to the phone it doesn't make the noise or it makes it less noticeable.

ok.... I do not remember what they have replaced, but i sent them my nexus s i9020T only for the buzzing noise.
They returned me with the same bug.... I've noticed, that when the buzz is in it, little tap on the back of the NEXUS and the noise go away .... it seems....
it could be that it is due for other components not well fixed to the chassis?
In september I will sent my nexus to them but I hope to read here the fix ... I had to wait "only" 45 days after sent my nexus to have it again on my hands

sorry to hear that.
I actually went to the samsung service centre some time ago, and the technician actually said that its normal to him. >_>
He put in some codes at the dialer and said something in the mic and it played the same words, (I ask him for the codes but he didnt want to give it to me) it did the exact loud buzzing sound from the in-ear speaker. I told him THATs the PROBLEM, but he was like thats normal man, if your speaker's blown, you would hear worse than that. He said he had to order a new speaker to have it "fixed" if I insist.
In the end I didnt leave the phone for the fix, thought to myself if I really can't stand it anymore I'll come back and get the speaker replaced or something.
so far I only had 2 friends that had the same problem. the other 3 friends has no such problem.
are there any news about the issue?

ok I got back my phone (SGS2 internaltion version) from Samsung Service Centre, after a second persuasion they changed the front panel (whole LCD including the front speaker, not sure if the back speaker too, I don't know the structure of the phone).
And now, it's solved!! NO MORE BUZZING when making/receiving calls!
Definitely go ask for an exchange or a change of your panel guys! It's a HARDWARE ISSUE.
i still haven't sent mine in but after hearing that there is a REAL solution could you please tell me everything i should tell the person i talk to from samsung. i just hope they don't ignore the problem a second time and give me the phone back without doing anything to fix the problem.

I dialed a toll free line and let the engineer listen to the buzz, he seemed to be able to make out the buzz too. He said that it could be the glue used on the front speaker. I don't really understand how that would affect it.
But when I took back the phone and asked what was the issue, the same engineer informed that he couldn't actually find the problem, but he just changed the front panel with the speaker. I guess I was pretty insistent (the phone was still under warranty) and I even borrowed another dude's SGS2 for comparison (he was in another counter), everyone was staring at us.
Please note that I'm using a Samsung Galaxy S 2, the structure might be a little bit different, but from my search it seems samsung phones has the same buzzing with some the batches of Nexus S and SGS2.
Hi Guys -
Black Nexus 5. It has been great in everything except placing and receiving calls. I don't use a headset just the phone directly. But whenever I call someone, people tell me that they can barely hear me. To fix that I literally have to move my mouth right next to the microphone and even then the voice is barely ok. I almost have to shout. People tell me that I sounded much louder on my own phone.
Also while hearing people on the phone the voice is too low. I use the volume control app and have the IN CALL volume on FULL. 5/5. Still I barely hear the other person and if it's noisy outside I cannot. Contrast to my previous phone in which I had to go down to 50% volume otherwise it was too loud.
Is this a defective unit? A hardware issue? Do I need to ask Google for replacement? I am loath to do that since the phone has been amazing in everything else. It's fast as hell and the battery life is super.
I wanted to know if any one has the same problem and whether it might be fixed with a software update or is it just a hardware issue and something wrong with my phone?
Thanks in advance.
Idem for me !
Hi,
I've the same problem with my Nexus 5. I think that it's a software problem because, when I put the speaker on, the problem is resolved. I think that it's due to 2 microphones and noise cancelation... Our voice is canceled ! I hope that Google is awared of that problem and will delivered a fix quickely. Specially that there is another problem with speaker that sometimes sizzles a lot ! I think that i'm going to buy a headset in the meantime. That's really a shame : a new phone that we cannot use to phone ! Even if yes for the other thinks Nexus 5 is great.
Are they other people that are the same problem ? How can we open a case in Google ? How they know that there is really something to fix ?
Thanks,

I don't think a replacement will help.
There are several other threads already
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2518840
exactly the same here... already some news what to do?
This issue seems to have become worse with the 4.2.2 update. The in-call volume is very very low. It's impossible for me to hear other people unless I am in a quiet room (the volume is maxed out). I recall with the stock 4.4.0 - the call volume was not that low.
For whatever reason, using a headset everything is fine. So for phone calls, Nexus 5 is only usable if I use a headset. It's impossible with the earpiece.
Anyone else having a problem with low in call volume? I'm wondering whether it's my specific phone. Everything else is perfect, and the battery life is insanely good. Wondering whether I should RMA.
I too am having this problem. It wasn't like this before the update but outside I can barely hear the other side. I don't make a lot of calls tbh but I remember shortly after I bought it making a call to another N5 and thinking how great it sounded.
Now it's hard to use.

Hello
I went to Sam Smith's concert in Lille (France) tuesday, tried to record a short extract of his performance but the sound is horrible. My girlfriend has an iPhone 5S and the sound quality is perfect.
Do you experience a ****ty sound quality in noisy sound conditions too ?

I'm not the person to ask this. It's just that Huawei haven't tested the microphone under those circumstances and many other phones and cameras have the same problem.
I edit sample rate at etc/media profiles from 48000KHZ to 44100 as they say and the prob still exist.Even moto e records perfect sound...I'm already thinking changing to meizu mx4 and i really don't want to change it..
Does the microphone issue has a fix?
Hi,
I am looking to buy this phone and already got some good feedback on the battery side. The camera I have seen some nice or good enough photos, now the matter of sound...
This issue with the microphone is quite worrying. I do not record a lot of video, but if I wanted to I want to make sure I get some nice clear audio in the recorded video. Does anyone know if this issue has a fix? I haven't seen this posted anywhere, so maybe someone has done some research better than me and found a workaround. Maybe the latest OTA fixed the issue or some of the custom roms don't have the issue?
Do we have a solution for this?Did Huawei answered?
Hi!
Have another problem: when I call to someone or pick up the phone, people with whom I spoke complained of poor audibility. But in the dictophone mode microphone level still stay absolutely normal. Looks like as program error.
Reflash & customize my phone regular, may be something wrong ((
Now I make 3-th button restore to 5.9.1 without any customization, recieve auto update to 5.9.16, but no luck.
Any idea, please?

The microphone quality on the Honour 6 Plus is also very poor when using Bluetooth handsfree.
Have tried this with many different handsfree car kits and car stereos.
It would appear the the noise reduction algorithm is reducing the mic gain with the result that the mic audio level is about 15% of what it should be. This makes it extremely difficult for callers to hear what is being said.
Phone has been replaced.
Have tried 4.4 and 5.1 - no difference
For such a fantastic phone this is a massive oversight. Looking at the Mate 8 (when it appears), but worried may have same issue
Have emailed Hauwei support about issue, but there is no resolution
Anyone else experiencing pretty crappy audio quality when streaming music over Bluetooth?
Fully stock and had the phone for a week now.
Thanks!
Damn, no one else experiencing this?
Just got my phone today and set them up with my Sony headphones since I saw your post and they sound fine. Having said that I'm not an audio file so you might notice more than I. Tomorrow I will try them with my Beats and car but so far so good.
I wouldn't quite consider myself an audiophile either, however the tingy sound I was hearing in my car was becoming unbearable. I have been using an AUX cable while I continue researching the bluetooth settings of the phone. Hopefully your's sounds good in your car as well though and I have a hardware issue that I just need to get replaced.
good sound here, music or call on Kenwood head unit via Bluetooth is ok
Yeah, so I may just be sensitive to the quality. I just tested with some BT headphones I have, the audio is noticeably more clear when using the AUX cable rather than the BT connection. My most recent daily phone was the Nexus 6 which must have had a better BT radio (or codecs)
I came also from nexus 6 and there are no noticeable differences between the two.
I just received mine yesterday and from a couple hours of listening I would say the Bluetooth audio is decent. My problem with the Bluetooth is that it won't pair with my fitbit charge 2 so I'm thinking about returning it.
My FitBit Charge HR is syncing, albeit slow, but does still sync.
Yes, small tingly, static. Electronic artifacts in a song using Samsung level u pro. In the background. This dont occur in another Android phone
tested on a dell venue Tablet, Android. And the quality is dramatically better (no noticeable bitrate artifacts). You can test it with aretha franklin - lover come back to me, and hear the differences in the RIGHT channel
this is a bitrate problem i think. sounds like 64kbps

same problem here, tingy/electronic sound. test aretha franklin lover come back to me (stereo version) and hear the horrible artifacts in the right channel. I believe this is a bitrate/bitpool limitation.

Well I am glad I am not the only one. This does rule out me sending my phone back though. I wonder if they will load new codecs when the device receives EMUI 5.0 in March.

Well poo, I was really hoping it would help. Although I own a different variant. I have BLN-L24.
Side note, how did you get access to the beta?

http://hwmt.ru/hwmtsite/firmware-database/
And find the model Bln-l24
I think this will be fixed with a custom rom, i remember CM13 have the Bluetooth.so lib fixed, and very high quality. I hope the same for lineage OS

Thanks for the link! Looks like they only have the original OS image for my model on there but that is fine.
I am hoping the same for the custom OS world. Doesn't seem like a lot of folks have started dev on this phone yet but they may be waiting for the new EMUI 5.0
Just a follow-up. Been using the new EMUI 5.0 for a few days now and no luck on Bluetooth quality increase.
The same here with my honor 6x BLN-L24. I have bitrate artifacts on treble. Always no fix ?
Having the exact same problem with my Honor 6X BLN-L21. Did somebody figure out a solution yet? Bluetooth is pretty much unlistenable like this.

So far I have just been living with a rooted phone and running Viper Audio. With the settings tuned right the quality sounds bearable but I am keeping fingers crossed a good solid ROM will come out that can fix this.
Hello,
I'm wondering how I might override the volume on my device in order to make the loudspeaker... louder. My device is rooted and has SmartPack Kernel app on it.
Any help is appreciated.
i am using this app. Hope this answers your question.

Well it did help and it has also made me realize how loud I listen to music with headphones on. My iphone which I use as a music player gets very loud whether it's the loudspeaker or using headphones. With the app you suggested I can tell the Note 3 is getting very old it doesn't handle its volume being overridden well, it sounded distorted and unclear (I had it at 5% boosted).
Oh well, I can live with how it is as-is.
Gave it another shot today.
I rooted the device and then flashed LOLZ kernel and with SmartPark have been able to up the decibels for the headphone jack and for whatever reason SmartPack's method doesn't distort the audio like the Booster app did.

Perhaps. I fear that my phone is going to be toast soon, the loudspeaker is starting to get that airy failing noise of a speaker sound haha.
I upped the decibel for the loudspeaker by 2% and the headphone jack I think to 3-4%.
BUT even before I did that to the loudspeaker it was giving me that failing sound.

It's just getting old, I guess. Either I'll have to upgrade soon or keep replacing parts.
