Desk Docks for the Pixel? - Google Pixel XL Accessories

Hello All,
So for my Nexus 6 I had a couple of wireless docks for my desk at work and home. I'd like to have something similar for my (yet to be ordered) Pixel XL.
The only one I have come across is:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LXS38S...=UTF8&colid=Z8TYV982LQKD&coliid=IC3LSX391RO6B
Does anyone have any experience with this one?
Thanks,
-Jason

That looks exactly like the one that Benson Leung recommends and has tested to comply and has a 56k ohm resistor for safe charging

I ordered two of these on eBay a couple weeks ago - they're far-and-away the nicest looking options. I'm hoping they actually support fast-charging, though.

I have one and it doesn't support fast charging and the USB C plug is VERY tight. It's hard to get the phone on and off. It was the same with my 6P.

I know this one doesnt have built in charging, but allows you to use your own cable and supports the phone in either direction very well.. I use it on my nightstand. I know its a stand and not a dock, but worth looking into imo

That one crap. I ordered 2 and only got one. It also does not fast charge. Most of the time it shows slow charging. It's a PITA to put the phone on. I finally got the company to send me the one they shorted me then sent both back. We need a stand capable or rapid charging.

Looks like there isn't a QC-PD dock/stand?
All of the reviews for the ones listed in this thread are all pretty bad.
The first one listed is no longer on Amazon.
Still not a fan of no wireless charging...

There are a few you can use a as a cradle while the phone is plugged into a USB TYpe-C charger. Or others that are usb-c but max 2.4A, which is 12W, considered "rapid" charging, if not max.

I've been searching for a good desktop charging dock for my Pixel XL and have come up with all the terrible-reviewed docks listed in this thread. Is there still no good, viable option for a dock (not just a cradle, but a dock) that utilizes USB-C PD?
---------- Post added at 03:52 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:50 PM ----------
I get it that cradles would ultimately provide the same result, but if I'm plugging in my own cord then I can just lay the phone on my desk. I'm looking for something nice and elegant for displaying the phone screen while charging on my desk, that I can just place the phone down on it and it's good to go.

I understand the appeal, but I wouldn't recommend it. I made my own makeshift desk dock for my Nexus 6P, and the combination of continuous fast charging and overcharging has degraded my phone's battery substantially. I would recommend just using a cradle, and topping off your phone's battery when it dips below 40%.

I thought these phones software made it impossible to continuously fast or overcharge now? With the Pixel, that's how it was explained in one article I read, how it's able to charge so fast without excessive heat - it fast charges to a certain point, then trickle charges, then when the phone hits 100% it stops charging altogether.
I'll have to see if I can find that article somewhere... I think the topic was why you could just plug it in each night next to your nightstand and be okay with it.

Step 2:
Remove the inductive module from the back shell
Step 3:
CAREFULLY PEAL BACK THE PCB AND INDUCTIVE COIL
SERIOUSLY BE CAREFUL IT IS STUCK WITH STICKY TAPE
YOU CAN BEND THE COIL PORTION BUT NOT THE PCB.
Step 4:
Solder the points for positive and negative to the points in the picture below
Final Step:
Position the module exactly like you see I did below. It will overhang onto the safe tape portion of the PCB and allow a nice flush mount of the back of the Sero 7 Shell when you put it back on. If it does not close flush your NFC may not work correctly because of the NFC push pins on the bottom left of the picture.
This is am awesome mod. Does the USB cable still work properly after this? Charging and syncing both?

I'm interested in how this turned out. I use a Palm phone and the Touchstone charger is awsome, and cheap.

All three for $20.15 us.
I bought the Touchstone at that price and the back cover when it was $2. I was able to use the Sero 7 Pro AC adapter and a USB cable with a narrow end to fit into the Touchstone. I pretty much followed the same positioning and wiring as xboxexpert. I get some odd touchscreen behavior when it charges. I didn't snap any pics of the process, but can try to get a video of it in action.

I gave the tablet to my parents, so I haven't been able to do more testing. Although I did buy another refurbed one since they are so cheap. Have you had any success on resolving it?

I havent spent too much time on the goofy touchscreen action. But it is random screen touches that can actually wake it up.
I was thinking that maybe the solder point for the ground was the wrong path or needed to be duplicated to properly simulate the charging port.
Thanks for this tutorial. I didn't set it up for wireless charging, however it seems these piece of junk tablets have a tendency of having bad usb ports. My neice and nephew each had one and both failed to charge after a few months. I soldered a USB cable to the two points in the op and the tablet is now charging.
I did this with an eBay qi pad for a note 3. It's working great but I'm only able to pull max of 220-270mah (via the app ampere). It also says its connected via USB not ac. Perhaps a limit of these solder locations? Same setup in another tablet device got up to 700mah. Here is my setup... Any ideas why such low mah?

Nexus 5 USB cable

Hi guys,
I received my Nexus 5 today at work, then cycled home and took the phone with me without any accessories.
Come bed time I tried to plug in all micro-usb I had from previous phones/tablets/hdd but none of them really slips into the micro-usb slot. It appears to be bloody tight and obviously I don't want to force it. I'll try tomorrow with the original cable.
Has any of you experienced a similar problem?
Regards,
Marco

Nope - my old micro-USB cables connect fairly well. Though I did notice that older chargers charge the N5 really slow (even chargers that charged my previous Galaxy S4 quickly).
The N5's OEM charger and the S4's OEM charger can charge my phone up very quickly (about 2 hours to get fully charged from 30% or less)
Similar yes... but mine is the other way around. My N5 cable is really tight, where as all my others slide right in

Just tested the three 10ft cables I have and they all work, as well as every other cable I tried. Its the adapter that does the charging. Two 10ft came from a convenience store, and one from Big Lots. also the short cables that came with various backup batteries work. Now if i could find a fast charge capable backup battery.
EDIT: After actually leaving one of the 10ft cables hooked to my phone, It does not fast charge it. The popup comes up, but after almost an hour the battery has only risen like 5%. I will actually have to thoroughly test the other cords over the next few days. But still, the adapter does the charging, I guess the resistance of the wire comes into play, cause the stock cable is way thicker than any other cable i have except for 2 short ones.
Is that one linked thick too, if it really does work with fast charging, I will buy it, but it looks just like the ones I have.
EDIT 2:unplugged it and plugged the other one in and the phone has risen 25% in 30 min, so I am at a loss.

Correct. It's the adapter that enables the fast charging when used with a phone that supports it. Any decent cable should work with it.
Yeah, and I have found out not all cables are made equal, the resistance on one cable was higher than the other of the same brand, the higher resistance one does not fast charge it even though it pops up.
Longer cables will almost always yield slower charge times. I have yet to find a cable that puts through as much power as stock cable. Anyone know where to get those?

It is not only the length of the cable but the thickness of the cable. You also need to be aware which most of you are that some cables are for charging only. The charging only cables will not for for 'fast charge' from my experience
I use this 15' cable every day to charge, fast charging works great.

Decent charging cable?

I've been burned twice now by Aukey's cables. All of them became loose and stopped working after a couple of weeks. Some of them didn't even work out of the box! I look at their reviews and I see 4+ stars. How can I trust any reviews on Amazon after that? I know you guys are buying these things and I trust this community to know what's good, so does anyone have a good recommendation for charger cables that don't suck?
Edit: it's been about 3 months now, I went with the anker powerline cables and they've all held up so far. We have 4 phones and 2 tablets plus PS4 controllers and various other devices so they get a lot of use. Very pleased with these I bought some more just in case.
Thanks for everyone's suggestions! Keep them coming so other people can see what's good!
I've personally found Anker's cables (esp. their Powerline series) to be very good. They're a bit more expensive, though. I'm really hoping you wont buy one and get burned by it, but I honestly can't see how that could even happen. :/

Here to recommend Anker cables. I've never had a problem with them.
Also you should check out thewirecutter.com. They just posted a review for best Micro-USB cables. Monoprice, AmazonBasics, and Anker cables came out on top.
I have used Anker Cables for awhile now, I just ordered a few more that are braided. They all have held up without any issues.
Chris
Never trust Amazon paid reviews, I'm using an old Motorola charging usd cable from my old Moto X 1st gen and works great but it take ages to charge
Anker braided cables matey. I also use my samsung tablet cable which takes a high ampage for the tab so the phone doesn't hurt it
I've gotta put another vote for Anker, love their cables.
Anker or bust!

Wow - I thought people were only kidding about the Aukey cables - I just got the Aukey PA-T2 42W charger and the included cable became all loose and unusable in just 2 days. I had a mini heart attack at first because I thought that the USB port on my phone had gone bad, and was dreading the whole warranty repair situation etc. but as I started using other chargers and cables it became apparent that it was only the Aukey cable that sucked. I bought an Aukey car charger too - that cable is still holding up, but I know now that it's just a matter of time.

Good car charger. I got the same (see above), but I would imagine it's just a matter of time before the included cable fails. If that's not an issue for you, go ahead.
If its just the cable that sucks I think ill jump on it. I didnt notice it even came with a cable till the second time looking at the auction, main reason was for a fast car charger. Any one know of better one was for similar pricing?

If I were to get a new charger and cable. What rating plug do I need? I've got an anker 2 M cable and the micro USB end has be one loose so doesn't hold it phone properly.

I've personally found Anker's cables (esp. their Powerline series) to be very good. They're a bit more expensive, though. I'm really hoping you wont buy one and get burned by it, but I honestly can't see how that could even happen. :/

I have used Anker Cables for awhile now, I just ordered a few more that are braided. They all have held up without any issues.

I must add to the excellence that is anker! Not just in cables, but in nearly everything they make! The customer service (should you ever need to use them, as I have) is fantastic as well!
I use the iOrange ones (http://www.amazon.com/iOrange-E-Rev...=1460143440&sr=8-1&keywords=iorange+micro+usb) and I've had 0 issues with them. The USB cable "can be inserted both ways" apparently (tested true) but the plug is in the middle and bends whichever way it needs to go, so not sure how long that will hold up if you keep switching directions. I bought 2 of them, very good build construction and good charge speed. Only had for about 3 months tho, so again be careful with the switching of which way you put your USB in.

how did these hold up over time?
I agree regarding Anker. Their 18 month warranty is superb and I've never had a problem getting replacements
i too can say I bought a two pack of red/black/gold tipped Anker cables and have had excellent results so far. the gold tips bend a little too easily, so my droid turbo gnawed one, but the cable quality and data/charging speeds are superb. im still wondering about reversible cables, specifically the above referenced ones if anyone else rolled the dice on them. the Anker cables have been great so far. i wonder about their power line + ones and whether they are worth the extra (roughly double) $$.
Also, as far as Aukey goes, im on the fence. my car qc 2.0 (T1 i think) i bought 13 months ago just failed out of the blue. wishing i had bought one that states 18 month warranty like the newer amazon listings do. Oh well. Anyone recommend a good car turbo charging option, preferably 2 QC 3.0? aside from aukey. lol.

Choetech QC 3.0 18W Wall Charger

Update 19/04/2016: This charger vastly outperforms the LG when screen on. See bottom of this post for details.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B019Q67STY/
Quick review of this charger. I received it free of charge in exchange for honest feedback.
It has a USB-A connection & no cable is included but the LG one you get with the G5 works fine.
It seems well built, a little shorter than the original but lacks the retractable earth pin so a bit of give & take on portability.
One standout physical difference to any other charger I've had is simply genius, a reversible USB-A connection. Can't believe it isn't more common but great to have a key advantage of USB-C ported to USB-A.
Performance in comparison to the original is nigh on identical. Both charge at 3A until about 60% then start ramping down.
Here's the times Choetech / LG
10%-60% 25:04 / 24:31
60%-80% 13:45 / 14:00
80%-100% 31:07 / 31:19
100% to current dropped to 0mA 49:19/ 49:56
Yep, with both chargers there seems to be a long time from reporting 100% & trickle charge actually reaching 0mA.
I used 3C Toolbox for measurements.
A few pics. LG charger is white.

Update 19/04/2016
Definitely better charging rate with QC3 when screen on. 1st 2 images are LG non QC 3.0, 3rd & 4th are the Choetech QC 3.0 charger
The former seems to pick up a little when temp goes below 35c but still not a patch on the latter.
(yellow marker indicates when screen on)
Thanks for the review.

Very good test! Thank you for the awesome review and test.
Does anyone have comparison times for quick charge 2.0 vs. quick charge 3.0 ??
So these numbers basically say they charged at almost the same rate?!

Yep. The only potential difference might be lower temperature with the QC3 due to more voltages to choose from but effective charge rate was nigh on identical.

Hmm, it's interesting the voltage/amperage ratings on your charger are exactly those printed on a QC2.0 charger... looking through Amazon, those are the same stats printed on other QC3 chargers too. If confirmed, this makes QC3 chargers not nearly as useful as advertised
The Anker QC3 I looked at on Amazon is touting 80% in 38 minutes, which would line up at ~70% with my QC2 charts. Meh.
@waylo Which kind of app did you use to test?

Amazing! The charging speed of QC 3.0 is really faster! Choetech seems work better and more stable than the g5 original brick. Thanks for sharing. @stuart0001
I just received the US version of this charger and will be putting my comparison/analysis on my thread as soon as I get some data collection.
I've been very pleased with mine since I got it. I haven't done any deep research like stuart but as a secondary charger in my living room it definitely seems to be at least as quick as the stock charger. I'm using a 6 foot cable so the fact that it still charges as quickly as the stock charger impresses me.
Overall I've been impressed but I think Choetech has done a good job at being some of the first 3rd party options you can trust recently. My outlet is in an awkward spot so I don't know if the brick heats up at all while it's charging or anything but it does the job.
I didn't get the charger for free but I think it's worth the money. I planned to take one of my 3.0 chargers to the office and use a 2.0 at my nightstand but I may end up just grabbing another one of these for the price.
Thanks for the review @stuart0001 it's nice to see the real data on this to know it's not just all in my head.
