Slimport Poor Quality - General Questions and Answers

I have a Nexus 7 2nd gen/2013 with an unbranded Slimport connector connected to a 40" 1080p TV via HDMI. Sadly, the quality is terrible, with poor anti-aliasing and what seems to be JPEG artifacting on images - sometimes making images look like they've had an oil painting filter applied!
The quality is almost identical to Miracast quality, which makes suspect that it's not Slimport per se, but is how the Slimport transmitter inside the Nexus is wired up. Perhaps the Slimport transmitter (ANX7814?) is connected to a software video device?
I've rooted the device and tried different resolutions and DPI to no avail.
My only comparison is a Tesco Hudl 2, which has a proper HDMI output and the output quality is perfect. (I'm only moving away from the Hudl because it's a PITA to root)
Is this common to all Slimport and MHL devices or is it particular to the way some manufactures wire up the Slimport and MHL transmitters?
I don't have enough reputation to post images of the problem

MHL adapter

Hi friends, I hope to buy a MHL adapter. I have a hTC sensation. But my large display's resolution is only 1366*768.. but my phone output's 1920*1080 resolution through this MHL adapter. can I use this adapter+cable to my low resolution large display? If not, must I use this adapter to a 1920*1080 Full HD resolution display?
My large display - LG monitor, 1366*768, VGA port(on monitor)
tools - MHL adapter, HDMI to VGA cable
Can I do this? I hope your support.. thanks
Hi man,
I don't think the output is 1080p when using the mhl adapter.
you will still have the qHD (960 x 540).
you shall try.
Well It will ONLY show you 1080p content when it is a VIDEO. The everything else would be the phones native resolution : /
hdmi to vga cable will not work.

Problems with netflix and MHL adapter

So I recently bought an S3, along with a samsung MHL HDMI adapter. One of my intended uses for the phone was to watch netflix on my TV, since my laptop broke a few weeks ago.
Anyways, the MHL adapter seems to work great for everything.. EXCEPT netflix. Videos are horizontally letterboxed, looks like a square aspect ratio. And more importantly, subtitles do not show up. I watch a lot of foreign films so this is a deal-breaker. On the phone itself, everything looks perfect, widescreen and with subtitles, but somehow the MHL adapter messes everything up on the way to the TV.
I tried googling and I only found one solution, to disable hardware overlay in developer settings, but that didn't work for me.
Also, the video doesn't look very good at all, both the resolution and compression quality looks pretty ****. Is netflix not streaming in HD on android?
Does anyone know any fixes for these problems?

Anyone connected the S4 with Bravia (or any LCD) via MHL? I have a question then.

Hi, I have a Sony Bravia W6 42" and I was thinking that if I buy a MHL cable for the S4, then I will be able to connect the phone to the TV and will be able to watch movies in full screen, those 1920x800 resolution ones which are normally can't watch in full screen, without those disgusting black bars!
My question is, what about quality? Will the picture quality degrade if I watch via MHL, than watching through a PHD or a Pen drive?
If someone has already experience in this matter kindly input here.
Thanks.
No one? I really need to know this.
Interested as well

I've used MHL on my S4 and my LG3DTV so I'll leave my first impressions. I'll try it again tonight to just be absolutely concrete but here's my immediate thougths.
1.) You need to make sure your MHL adapter supports the S4. There are some 5 pin ones and 11 pin ones. I have the Samsung adapter so I'm fine but make sure you get the right one.
2.) The black bars are part of the aspect ratio. Our screen is 16:9 so if your movie is 16:9 it'll fill the whole screen. Some movies use wider aspect ratios so you'll get the black bars on the top and bottom. I'll check tonight if you get the bars outputting to TV. I can't remember that.
3.) I believe there is some overscan (rather underscan) when outputting via MHL. It seems like I had a black border all the way around when I played a few games on my TV with MHL and a bluetooth controller (which is awesome by the way). Some HD games did fill the screen and was a pretty decent experience (NFSMW, A8, MC4, Osmos).
Again I'll test these out tonight and post some pics with my other phone so you can see for yourself before buying anything.

Ah finally someone replied. If I buy I will buy the original S4 MHL, that's not a worrying factor. But as you said, there's some under/over processing, hmm, that's what I was wondering! I mean if you clearly see picture quality degradation while playing via MHL in comparison to USB devices (PHD or Pen drive) then I will certainly not be interested, I will take black bars happily over a poorer picture.

picture seems to show nicely providing the res is HD (1920x1080) otherwise some pixelation (as TV and Phone is Full hd)
i get some lag when tapping the screen and overlay to pause skip video appears but when the overlay minimizes video starts again at normal speed.
sound works fine.
if phone is in portrait mode then ull have black on either side on tv .
ratio for tv 16:9 16:10 is fine

Need much better audio quality on video recordings: Nexus 5x

I would like to significantly improve the audio quality on live music video recordings shot with a Nexus 5X. With the iPhone, there were many purpose built condenser mic/interfaces that plugged in directly, but it seems that with Android, there is no such luck? So I need to buy a OTG USB interface/adapter and use a self powered USB mic? Is this true/accurate?
Can anyone recommend a mic that is small, preferably something that attaches to the phone itself? The Shure, Zoom and Rode mics for the iPhone are great I wish there was something like these products for Android devices.

USB-C Audio and HiFi music (audiophile question)

I was always a huge proponent of LG's DACs. The ESS Sabre DAC gives manufacturers a lot of range when it comes to distinct sound signatures. I was always big on the Galaxy Notes up until my 7 was damn near ripped from my hands. lol. I remember the last time Samsung really focused on sound quality was (I believe) the Note 4 when they used a tuned Wolfson DAC.
With that said, USB-C audio is pretty new to me and I'm learning as I go. I bought two dongle DACs for my two cars. Sonata's HIDIZS for the Acura and the SpectraX (which uses a newer version of LG's ESS Sabre) for the Honda (aftermarket system). For around the house I use the packaged AKGs which seem to do a good enough job. On occasion I steal the HIDIZS dongle from the car and use my 1More Quad Drivers.
I recently subscribed to Amazon's new HD music service which I read can reach a ridiculous bit range (32bit @ UltraHD setting). So here comes my question considering the hardware I use;
Lets say you have a phone that is capable of X-output... does/can the dongle DAC supersede the capability of the phone? For instance, my HIDIZS dongle DAC is capable of 24bit/192KHz and respectively, the SpectraX is capable of 32bit/384KHz. If my source file (music) is compressed at that level, will the dongle DAC actually decode at that level, regarless of the phone's capability? Or is the phone a bottleneck?
With that said... do we have any information on the capabilities of the Note10?

If your dongle does work then its outputting at it whatever resolution it says on screen. there is no analog signal thru the usb c only digital. The conversion takes place at the dac, so whatever your dac's capabilities are, that is the max you can go. For what its worth, the audio is **** on the note 10's included akg's compared to the lg v40 or even the s9+ with the 3.5mm variant of the same akg's .the note 10's speakers are really good though. Do you use usb audio player pro? Its pretty good for hi res audio .though i don't think it supports prime music yet.

Thanks for the clarification. I haven't used the USB audio player yet. I'm really enjoying Amazon Music HD. Some of the remastered u
UHD songs are good but some of the more recent UHD content like Chainsmokers' albums sound phenomenal. I'll check out the audio player to see how it works.
