So I'm in a bit of a dilemma here. Right in front of me is the ZTE Axon 7 and Huawei honor 8. They're both using Straight Talk(different accounts, ofc) and the honor 8 could only go up to 2g/EDGE while the Axon 7 could do 4g LTE easily. They're using the same Network so the APN is the same.
One thing i've noticed is that my Axon 7 has better signal strength(lolwhat, the phone is known to have bad reception). It's currently at -106 dBm 34 asu while the Honor 8 is around -84 dBm 14 asu. Could that be the reason why? is there any way to change it somehow? will a factory reset fix the issue? It's been messing with my mind over the last couple of days. Thank you for your time.

Signal strength is also dependant on the position of the towers. Keep an eye on the strengths as you are mobile. I can almost guarantee that those specs will change.

That makes sense, but what's causing the downgrade to 2g though? the APN/network settings are pretty much the same accross both devices. I even swapped both sims and the result is still the same.
One reason could be that your carrier uses a LTE frequency that the Honor 8 doesn't know
These are the Honor 8 LTE bands:
LTE band 1(2100), 3(1800), 7(2600), 8(900), 20(800)?*LTE band 2(1900), 4(1700/2100), 5(850), 12(700), 17(700)
ZTE Azon 7 LTE bands:
LTE band 1(2100), 2(1900), 3(1800), 4(1700/2100), 5(850), 7(2600), 8(900), 19(800), 20(800), 28(700), 38(2600), 40(2300), 41(2500) - A2017G
1(2100), 2(1900), 3(1800), 4(1700/2100), 5(850), 7(2600), 12(700), 13(700), 17(700), 20(800), 25(1900), 26(850), 29(700), 30(2300), 41(2500)?*- USA
In order to know this for sure you have to check what LTE frequency your carrier does use in your area where you live. If it doesn't have a match whit the Honor 8 known bands than that is the problem.
If everything seems to be fine than you could try maybe a friend's sim from another carrier.

I also suggest maybe getting a new sim and let your carrier manually put in your APN. I was swapping my sim in different phones and my carrier (att)said that doing so can ruin the integrity of the sim.

Well the Honor 8 came from Europe. Will it have different LTE Bands than the ones you could purchase in USA? I just went to Cricket's website which let me type the IMEI of the phone, and it's saying that it's incompatible.

Yes it will have different bands. The US model is FRD-L04. It will have the LTE bands you need.
Hi, we're sorry to hear that your Honor 8 is having signal strength issues. Please contact your service provider since it sounds like it has something to do with your SIM not working correctly within the device. Have them reset your APN settings and check that your SIM isn't defective. If you continue to have issues, you can follow up with our Honor Customer Support Team at +1-844-524-6667 and they can help troubleshoot the issue further. (NS)

For me with the US version I needed bands 2/4/12 for T-Mobile/MetroPCS. Cricket is AT&T (I think) which is 2/4/17 (I think)?
edit: Googling is saying AT&T uses 2/4/5/17 for LTE although there is some variation by region because of not having a license for all the bands everywhere in the US.

Thats probably it I guess I'm out of luck. My sister purchased it from a different country to give to my parent here in the U.S.

I did change the SIM(purchased last week) and problem still persist. I've talked to a Representative for my Carrier and we've tried all the possible APN thats usable. I guess the main problem is that the Phone came from Europe, so the US bands might not be present. I doubt there's a way to exchange it for the U.S version since it was brought as a gift.

That sucks. Maybe try selling it on swappa.
It's already considered as used and I figure you can only exchange/sell it as so.
Besides swappa, try Amazon.
So i got a chance to try the phone out around Greenbay WI. Surpsingly i was able to achieve H+, which is very good. Not sure if its a tower issue, but would boosting the signal somehow improve things?
Not a tower issue, so much as the frequency from the tower.
I'd imagine the easiest thing to do is to sell it unfortunately, having lived with a USA model in Europe on a previous phone, nothing is more frustrating than watching your phone slowly crawl in comparison to your friends

The following is the difference between D820 and D821(what i have), so should i go with ATT or Tmobile? i will be staying in LA area.
North America (D820) Nexus 5 model:
GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
CDMA: Band Class: 0/1/10
WCDMA: Bands: 1/2/4/5/6/8/19
LTE: Bands: 1/2/4/5/17/19/25/26/41
Outside North America (D821) Nexus 5 model:
GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
WCDMA: Bands: 1/2/4/5/6/8
LTE: Bands: 1/3/5/7/8/20

You will not get LTE from either ATT or Tmobile as the Tmobile uses Band 4 AWS for LTE while ATT mostly uses Band 17 700B+C, Band 2 PCS A-F, Band 4 AWS, and some Band 5 CL850.
WCDMA HSPA+ will be fine. T-mobile runs HSPA+21 while ATT runs HSPA+14.4. Both have a day to day prepaid service that you can use to test them out before you choose.
Sorry, I was wrong. Both AT&T and T-Mobile use Band 4 ( and AT&T has band 17) for LTE. I was mistakenly considering only the network frequencies, which was wrong when considering LTE. You won't get LTE on either carrier with the D821, and can only get DC-HSDPA with T-Mobile.
Sorry for the misinformation.
thanks alot all, so there are two options on tmobile for day to day pre pay, will the $3 option work on my international version N5 (D821)? i only see either 2g or 4g in Tmobile? no 3g in tmobile? i am kind of lost on this. (all i need is faster internet on my N5, whats the best option for me to choose?)

T-Mobile's "4G" will include HSPA+ (Upgraded 3g).
Same situatioin !
So happy to find this post !
I have EXACTELY the same "problem"
I do have the Nexus 5 D821 and I'm going to L.A. for one month.
Can you tell me wich solution did you choose and if it worked well for you ?
Also how much do you have to pay for how much Data ?
Thanks so much for your help !!!
I have some friends that went through this when they came to visit the States (also with D821). T-Mobile is your best option. You won't get 4g, but you will get fairly good H+.

Same thing goes for me. Going to LA area for an internship. I guess I will get a new phone then. I've been advised to choose either AT&T or Verizon.
Can someone confirm?

Yes I can confirm it totally works !!!
Not for the 4G of course but for me it's fast enough with the 3G.
But maybe you'll have to make your APN manually like I had to do.
By the way I find a GREAT carrier, ultra.me
For $39 you can have :
+ Illimited talk & text
+ Illimited international calls and text !!!
+ Illimited Internet (not 4G)
+ more !!!
As the topic states, is there any way to use the Nexus 5 (D821) on the Sprint Network in the US?
I had a broken phone so I bought this nexus 5 thinking that regardless of the difference between the two, the radio should still be compatible with it since it is supposed to be a world phone. I just recently realized that the radios are different (apparently the D821 isn't allowed to use CDMA bands).
I know there is the Nexus Field Test APK, but I don't think that would enable those CDMA bands.
I won't be back in the states for another three months, and at that point, my service contract would end with Sprint, so I could either buy a new phone, or go to another carrier (maybe T-mobile, or any pre-paid provider) and shop around.
But, as for my question, is there any way to get the D821 to use the Sprint Network?
See below.
Elluel said:
GSM networks are the exact same on either device
Some NA carriers use CDMA instead of GSM for 2G. A D821 won't be able to get 2G from those NA carriers that use CDMA, a D820 will get 2G anywhere in the world on either GSM or CDMA.
D820's extra band 19 on WCDMA is pretty much negligible
Some LTE bands are shared, but most are different. If you're lucky/pre-searched before choosing a carrier, you can get a D820 to work elsewhere/D821 to work in NA on LTE if the carrier happens to use one of the LTE bands that are shared between the D820 and D821.
D820:
GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
CDMA: Band Class: 0/1/10
WCDMA: Bands: 1/2/4/5/6/8/19
LTE: Bands: 1/2/4/5/17/19/25/26/41
D821:
GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
WCDMA: Bands: 1/2/4/5/6/8
LTE: Bands: 1/3/5/7/8/20
Also, it has been proven possible to enable LTE band 3 & 8 on the D820, as well as band 2 & 4 on the D821 with modifications, which could make your D820 work on more non-NA carriers, and your D821 work on more NA carriers. So there is no software enabled modification that I can use that will enable the CDMA bands (not the LTE bands) to be used on a D821?
I know of that forum link at the bottom of the post, but, as far as I know, CDMA is required before the use of LTE on Sprint.

The D821 lacks CDMA support completely.
As far as I know, Sprint uses bands 25, 26 and 41 for LTE so the D821 has no way to get LTE either.
I use ATT but I still like unlocked phones.

To be honest, it would make no difference. You would only get different carrier bloatware and that's it.
I believe you might be missing a band or two for LTE. But its the bands not commonly used yet like 2600 and forget the other one but, I could be wrong
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
You lose full band compatibility and Wifi Calling/VoLTE
S7 G930A (AT&T) Bands: 1(2100), 2(1900), 3(1800), 4(1700/2100), 5(850), 7(2600), 8(900), 12(700), 20(800), 29(700), 30(2300), 38(2600), 39(1900), 40(2300), 41(2500)
S7 G930P (Sprint) Bands: 700/800/850/1700/1900/2100 (Bands 2,4,5,12,13,25,26)
The overlaps are 2, 4, 5, and 12, which could mean bad or no connection if you are AT&T. AT&T version also has more GSM bands for international use.
Only benefit of the Sprint model I can see is CDMA compatibility. I believe cost is about the same.
Personally, I would never pay full price for a Sprint S7 for the AT&T network. The international versions would have more band overlap (missing 29 and 30), Exynos chip, and no bloatware...downside is no Samsung Pay.
there is no dissadvantage. if you have unlocked sprint you can flash any carrier specific you want on ODIN. all carriers will work CDMA and GSM
if you have unlock AT&T you are limited to GSM only carrier. you cant put CDMA sim they will not work
I am a newbie here so please advise if this in the wrong place or outside the rules of site.
I have a zenfone 3 ultra international edition and I love it. On AT&T it only works on band 5. I knew that when I bought it.
However I am willing to pay US 500 for someone to post a proven and effective workaround or unlock of all the bands. First person to post a working and validated solution by at least 2 other users in US will get the prize.
Thank you
PS a
nd I have read most of the posts about the unlock that goes away upon reboot
Agreed. Same need here. I'll add another $500 to the bounty. $1k between us to the one who finds how to unlock all 4g us lte bands
hmm sorry cant help but i was just researching about this phone. weird to see this thread (yes im aware now its all because of AT&T) but checking the spec, this phone has LOTS of frequencies already, compare with xiaomi etc. in australia this phone cover ALL telco providers. are we talking about ZU680KL model?
2G bands GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 - SIM 1 & SIM 2
3G bands HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100 / 800
4G bands LTE band 1(2100), 3(1800), 5(850), 7(2600), 8(900), 18(800), 19(800), 20(800), 26(850), 28(700), 38(2600), 40(2300), 41(2500)
Here what i see for ATT in USA
"As of January 1, 2017, AT&T uses a GSM based network operating on the following frequencies/bands:
3G WCDMA/UMTS/HSDPA/HSPA+ - 850/1900MHz Bands 2 & 5 (minimum requirement for nationwide service)
4G LTE –700/850/1900/1700/2100/2300MHz Bands 2, 4, 5, 12, 17, 29, 30, 40, 66."
I can only get occasional band 5. I have called ATT and added the IMEI and that only made it worse.
The prize is for unlocking the LTE bands that seems possible in Qualcomm based phones , even the ones not officially approved by ASUS for use in US.
I will chip in an additional $250 to the jackpot
I have a LG G3 D850 which is outside of US unlocked and works on local carriers however the problem is I only have 2G edge connectivity for mobile data. I have read the thread but in my case there is a difference i.e., I am able to receive 3G/4G connectivity on only one of the local carriers that operates on LTE Band 5.
According to LG G3 D850 specifications it supports:
HSDPA 850 / 1900 / 2100 - D850
LTE band 1(2100), 2(1900), 3(1800), 4(1700/2100), 5(850), 7(2600), 17(700), 29(700) - D850AT&T states that it uses Band 1,3 and 7 as roaming bands.
Could the problem be that in my case these two Bands 1 and 3 are locked and thus I cannot get 3G and 4G connectivity for all my carriers. In that case should I still flash a qcn file or should I proceed to unlock these bands first. I can tell you that I definitely see these two bands in the phone's service menu and can select them successfully (which kind of indicates the bands are unlocked but I am not sure).
I am really confused on how to proceed. Could someone kindly help me out here.
Best Regards
