I'm the New Guy.
Can you change an app's label/name if you have the apk?
I've attempted with no success.
I used the APK MANAGER 4.8 by Daneshm90, it de-compiles and converts android xml to xml and back. Whenever I try changing any viewable text (ie. example.apk via Apk Manager creates an out folder: ~\out\res\values\strings.xml -> "<string name="app_label">Messaging</string>" >--> "<string name="app_label">In4nerd's SMS</string>") ultimately it doesn't accept it and wont recompile.
Any help?
Ps: can't posts links
Pss: I'm using CM 5.0.8 update 2.1, if it even matters (which I think it might because Mms.apk only works for its target version and under<-assumption; meaning CM 6's Mms.apk does not work on CM508's..I've tried it too)
null above this arrow ^
EDIT:
I found a way. I can now edit everything about anything in any app (icon, app title, text in the app, graphics in the app..etc) [including sys apps] [without damaging its structural integrity]. I changed sys app "Messaging" to "DANO!". Thnx for all your help xda...(sarcasm sigh).
Post script: if any of you guys wants to know what the problem I had with this originally was, let me know.
Also, I'm not going to abuse this ability to steal app code or take credit for any app not made by me; I only will use this to make an app more appealing to myself, and my system.

Registry is Windows only. On Unix systems apps config is usually stored in configuration files in home directory. And Android is totally different story.

That means that is dificult or not posible? I just want to change the google earth cache max size. It has 200MB by default. Is posible to change that or is something that requires be changed by Google?
Thanks a lot for your reply.

That means it may be stored anywhere. In Android's preferences system, some custom file in /data/data or even hardcoded in Google Earth's app. It doesn't matter where it's written in desktop, windows application.

Well, I have GE installed in the N1 and in the Galaxy Tab, this one has internal memory, even if I not use a sd card I can see the "sd card" in the file explorer, something like if where a virtual disk.
Must I have my devices rooted to have a look if find something on the preferences system or data/data? Hope any guy with knowledge here find this issue interesting enough to have a look, maybe its a simple thing to change but I have no idea how to look for.
You can try to unpack the apk file for the google earth app and check if any of the files there has any mention of the size limit.
I think it is better than to go hunting for the configuration files spread all over your phone.

Have unpacked the apk, open with notepad, there are characters unreadeable and some text. On the text have found references to the "clear cache" , that refer to that option on the app, but no specific. Only this:
buttonView c cacheDir cal
callbackProxy canWrite cancel cause cb cel
What I think doesn´t mean anything. I guess..., maybe 200mb is the default cache that Android allows for any app considering that the the most often devices a mobiles phones with limited space and or performance?
You see all those funny characters because the app is compiled.
You should try decompiling it. I would post a link for you , but I'm new and can't post links , so just search on google the word : smali.
Hope this helps
Sorry , You should search apktool not smali

As I thought it's in some config files in /data/data
Ok everyone, I know there are a fair number of us out there that have rules setup in Exchange to redirect emails from certain people to folders. The problem with this is that will stop us from getting notifications on our phones (NOTE: I am not referring to syncing those folders. Obviously they need to be synced but the issue was that even with them synced you do not receive a notification when an email arrives in the folder even though it did sync properly). I was shocked when 4.4 came out and this issue hadnt been addressed. However as per the official issue on the android code site a user found out an incredibly easy way to make it work! It appears it is built-in by Google they just chose not to enable the feature.
See this post: https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=50188#c59
I wasnt sure where to post this as it should work for any phone running the new email app in 4.4 but I didnt want to create a thread in each phone forum.
Here are some directions that may be a bit clearer than the original comment above.
NOTE: I used Root Explorer (paid version) for this
- Go to your email database folder. Located at: /data/data/com.android.email/databases
- Click on the "EmailProvider.db" file (open in Internal Viewer)
- Choose "Mailbox" from the list
- From this list write down the corresponding "serverId" of each folder that you want to have notifications on
- Convert those numbers to Base64 using the following tool: http://www.motobit.com/util/base64-decoder-encoder.asp (note that you will remove any "=" signs after your number)
- Now go back a folder to: /data/data/com.android.email/shared_prefs
- Now find a currently syncing folder from that same account (i.e. likely labelled: Folder-<ACCOUNT NAME>-<BASE64STRING).xml) So as an example lets say [email protected]. In that example the folder with serverId "5" is being synced. In this case its the "Inbox" folder of that account
- Long press on that file and choose "Copy" and then copy it back to the same directory
- Rename your newly copied file changing JUST the BASE64STRING part to the one that matches the folder you want to sync
- Reboot phone and enjoy!
I guess I should post them in some of the phone forums... there was a big thread somewhere I remember posting in at some point
Thanks for writing out these instructions! Glad to see there's a workaround -- this one little issue has driven me nuts for forever!
Just for reference, there is a thread I've followed for quite some time that's been focused on this issue, but it's buried in a Galaxy S II forum, so I think it could be easy to miss. They seem to be on to the same solution you posted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=48140770#post48140770
EDIT: Actually, just noticed the XDA post I linked to is word-for-word the same as the Android Issue Tracker post you reference, so that's the same guy providing the solution. Small world.
Just an FYI that even in gmail 5.0 this issue still exists and is still easily fixed by adding the file as above (different folder now though). Apparently making this an option is beyond Google's ability
Have the same problem.
The real path to DB is:
/data/data/com.google.android.gm/databases/EmailProvider.db
Shared prefs:
/data/data/com.google.android.gm/shared_prefs
And the manual instructions at the first post of this topic didn't helped me.
I have OnePlus 3T A3003 with Oxygen OS 4.1.3 (beta7) (Android 7.1.1) and Gmail version 7.4.23.154506495.release.
Anyone have any ideas?
I play a game on android with multiple accounts (Each account requires a different login info), I would like to write a simple batch file to log me in for each account.
I thought of a few ways to do it and the most elegant way i though of was: To determine which file on the device stores the credentials to login to the app (the game doesn't ask for login info every time it starts - unless you logged off / signed off the game before existing the game). Now, after i find the correct file on the device i would save it to a separate folder - do so for each account - and use the script to switch the credential file and start the game. or even better have some sort of an interface with a drop down list of my accounts to choose from.
so to resume the concept of what i'm looking in to do: 1. locate the where the game stores the login info. 2. save that login info in a seperate folder for each account. 3. create a script that will switch the files from the saved folder to the game actual folder (where it would be used by the game) 4. optional - do it with some sort of an interface or simply by creating different shortcuts on the desktop.
that's all hope it can be done.
P.s
I now see that i also need to know how to find the place where the game stores the info, any help with that ?
thanks
any solve yet !!
I wish....
XDA is not what it used to be. ppl doesn't take the time to answer questions anymore.... Unfortunately.
So I reside in India and have recently bought a Bravia which runs on Android 11.
But the problem is that it has no built-in default file manager app
Like when I install PPSSPP v1.13.1, the emulator wants me to choose a directory and that's where I'm stuck.
Same goes for Lemuroid emulator. (Latest from F-Droid)
To simplify, if I want to manage storage I use FX File Manager but can't access to Android/Data or Android/Obb folder and there's no default or stock file manager app to grant the access from.
Any solution??
mix explorer works perfectly

I have also tried the mix explorer. But it has the same issue.
When i connect my mobile to google tv via usb,it soesnt show my mobile content on tv
I have the same problem . PPSSPP displays a message that it cannot use the file management application. PPSSPP does not allow you to open and view directories. PPSSPP cannot see the ISO files already uploaded to the disk.
Same issue with Chromecast with Google TV after updated to Android 12 - it has no default file manager so there is no way to grant permission to access Android/data!
seriosuly people the solution keep being posted and you guys chose to ignore it ...
and people need to stop with the updates to android 12 broke something.

I have the same problem on my Chromecast with Google TV (HD) with Android 12. The application (John Data Sync for John GBC/GBA emulator) needs access to the emulators folder but when i tap the assign button (to search for it) it does not open any file manager and shows this error: "You don't have an app that can do this".
I've tried multiple file managers, including Mixplorer, but it can't open any of them. I suspect the problem is that the OS doesn't have any file manager setted as default. It doesn't open any chooser and I have no idea how to set it. Maybe from adb?
I don't think it's a permission problem since the file managers do have access to the data folders when i open them. The problem is the other apps can't "launch" or even find them.
Any ideas? Thanks
i have to do the same with psppp & no problem.

Are you doing this specifically on Chromecast with Google TV 4k? Because as others are saying "default file selector" is not present on that device, therefore loophole to enable access doesn't work.
I'm sure there are other Google TV devices out there and OEMs might have added some flavour to them. allowing this.
I've attach photo as proof that MiXplorer doesn't work on CCWGT

Indeed, the way Google manages storage on newer android versions, particularly 12 and 13, does make things like this more difficult if not impossible. Even before then, in Android 11 there had been an increasing dependency on native file manager components, and to your points this may vary depending on how the OEM handles things so there is not always a clean line between Android versions. In newer versions, if people disable their native file manager they may then have problems with other file managers such as MiXplorer or even core functions of the OS. It stands to reason that if the native file manager was removed there would be similar problems, and it seems as if this is the situation some of you are in. Unfortunately the workarounds which grant access to various storage locations in third-party file managers (the creation of document providers) requires those native components. Those who can add document providers but still have issues accessing locations could then try the workarounds which you may have already heard in the MiX thread. https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/mixplorer-q-a-and-faq-user-manual.3308582/post-87626419
Disclaimer: although I maintain the MiXplorer FAQ I am not here to advertise it, just doing some cross pollinating between threads since there is common interest between those who want more access on their Google devices and those who use MiXplorer.

With all due respect, in addition to sharing inaccurate information about expectations in new versions of android on Google TV devices (and the subsequent need for native file explorer components) you have also falsely stated that MiXplorer is open source. As explained in various supporting resources for MiXplorer it is closed source.
As to not updating to android 12 or 13, for the time being that's what I'm doing but not everybody has a choice and at a certain point it does become beneficial to upgrade the OS for security and compatibility reasons. It is understandable and reasonable that people would find this problematic and seek workarounds.
Disclaimer: although I maintain the MiXplorer FAQ I do not represent the app or the developer nor do I have any elevated standing here at XDA, so just as a person I say: someone who is telling others to read posted solutions should do better at reading information themselves so as not to spread inaccurate misinformation.

I wasn't sure from your post if things should work with workaround without native file manager or not so I tried on my CCWGTV.
Sadly it doesn't work - executing document provider step from both workarounds results in "You don't have app that can do this"

My post was intended to share that even in file managers with advanced capabilities it may not be possible to work around the absence of a native file manager. The workarounds were provided for those who are able to create a document provider but then cannot access the location (in MiXplorer). If you cannot even create the document provider then you may be stuck... as you and others have found out. I've never heard of a workaround for this and would imagine that any workaround would involve some system tweaks. This certainly does not mean they don't exist, which is why I posted here so if anyone shares a solution here I could share it in the MiX thread. Maybe there is some other thread or Forum where people are hacking away at this.

I'm having the same issue on Chromecast 4. Have you found any workaround to access Android/data folder? I've tried to install File application from other device. It's installed and when I try to access Android/data now it shows the popup with question which app to use and there's this File application is listed. But when I select it, it doesn't start the application at all and I can't select the right directory.

if you just want to access the files or install apks, you can use ADB or terminal emulator to manage the files as an alternative.
I'm having the same issue as well. It won't let me choose a custom folder for storing PSP files. Tried different things but nothing worked.
