Hangout notifications not working. - Google Pixel Questions & Answers

Hello everyone,
I'm not getting hangout notifications when it's in the background. If hangouts is in the foreground it works perfectly. Anyone seen this or have any ideas how to fix it?
Thanks!

According to the Google dashboard hangouts was (or is if you ask me) having issues with delayed messaging. Which is bad for me using google voice as my primary line.

Hopefully it gets taken care of quick! Just started happening for me today.

Hangouts SMS on desktop?

So I'm sure this is a stupid question, but I'm asking anyway.
Now that Hangouts is the default app on our phones for SMS and MMS, I'm wondering about future potential for it. Specifically, I'd love to be able to use the hangouts app/extension on my desktop to send SMS messages from my phone. It's annoying to have to grab my phone to respond when I'm already at a PC. I'm working around that currently by using Mightytext, but it's annoying and buggy. If Hangouts is going to be the solution for messaging, I'd like to see that feature set integrated. Anyone know if this is possible or planned?
Additionally, is it possible (or planned) to have hangouts archive messages the same way it archives chats? This seems like the most useful purpose/benefit when it comes to using hangouts for text messaging.
Any thoughts or feedback?
I was chatting with a guy last night in the chat window in Gmail and it was syncing to hangouts on my phone?

Yes, chats on google sync to your phone perfectly. I was thinking about SMS messages syncing to my computer the other direction. If you've ever used mightytext, you know what I'm talking about. It seems to me like it should be integrated into hangouts on the PC/gmail/google+

Voice+ Needed After Latest Hangouts Update?

So I've been using Voice+ for a long time. Things have been pretty much a seamless experience.
Today I got the hangouts update to let me do Google Voice through Hangouts. I enabled it and sent a few texts. I haven't finished my testing but it seems like everything should be working fine.
I was just wondering if I should go and disable Voice+ in the settings now that Hangouts does the same functionality.
Thoughts?

You don't need voice+ anymore to get your google voice number messages to send through hangouts. You do have to make sure that the sms setting is through your gv number thought. It will say in gray text what number you are sending/receiving from in a hangout.

[Q] Lollipop Messenger 5.0 on D850

Had anyone installed the new messenger yet? It works for me except when I try to attach a picture... messenger FC's. Anyone have success with it yet?
its on the play store https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.messaging
I have been using it as my daily text about for about a week now and it works flawless.
Works for me very well. You should check your settings or try to delete your cache or something. Did you set it as your default sms/mms app?
I deleted the version I got from the forums and installed the play store version and all problems went away.
Anyone having problems receiving long texts or pictures with Messenger?
I Like it but...
I used messenger for a little bit, but for my personal preference I prefer to have my messenger and hangout integrated into one. That's the reason I was stoked when hangouts came out with SMS integrated. Other than that it is an amazing app.
I can receive pictures and group texts with 5.0 messenger but I cannot receive regular text! I've been working on this for a while, any help is appreciated!

Issue with Google Messenger

Just received the Mate 9 that is officially released in USA, but discovered couple issues with Google Messenger:
1. Even for those who are in my list of contact, whenever they send me text, I can only seem them as "Unknown sender"
2. Can only receive text but no way to reply.
Any idea?
Hi, know issue, I've switched to Signal
I've also seen this issue pop up randomly. Does anyone know of a fix?

Yea, I've done the same just so I didn't have to deal with the annoyance. I do hope though that it gets resolved

GM works fine for me...stock does not when sending pictures.
Just an observation using OK Google command to send at text.
For example: If I say, Ok Google, Send a text to Joe.
It will let me dictate a text to Joe (in my contacts) but it does not record what I dictated in Huawei's messenger app.
Although it does correctly send the text using Huawei's app.
However, if I use Hangouts it does record what I dictated in the Hangouts app messager.
and the text is sent successfully.
The command I used was, Ok Google, Send a text to Joe using Hangouts.
I've been using Hangouts with GV and I have had zero issues so far
Same here. Also Google keyboard has non active gif option

I don't know if this will help, but - using the built-in SMS app - I quickly discovered that my contacts' mobile phone numbers must be in the format +1 ########## ("plus 1, space, 10-digit number with no spaces or hyphens"). That at least allowed me to send texts to individuals and see them as senders, but (as noted elsewhere in this forum), the built-in app does not send pictures nor does it handle group texts in MMS properly. Since Huawei warns against using third-party apps due to potential battery drain, I consider this a flawed phone and have requested a refund.
Having the same issue here, even worse with hangouts, in hangouts all texts show in one conversation thread,
I've tried the +1 space number and that didn't fix the issue for me
I had this issue as well unknown sender took the plunge and deleted all my texts and now have no issue with GM.
I tried to switch from stock apps to g-messenger but I experienced issues mentioned here:
* all messages are showing unknown sender
* there no option to reply
is this an issue with the messenger app or the phone version (MHA-L00) ?
The previous message issue is ok for now; just need to create new text message thread and it'll be fine.
The newer issue I'm facing has something to do with pictures in text message. I can send, but cannot receive. One way traffic ain't exactly too much fun at this point.
I had this issue too, even wiping all previous messages didn't work. SMS through Hangouts wasn't working either. I switched to Textra.
Great phone but a bad stock messenger app. So I switched to Google Messenger and the problems began with not receiving MMS. This needs to be fixed!

This did not work for me.
I downloaded the latest Google messenger apk from apk mirror and now it works. If you download the app from the play store it doesn't receive MMS. Also the only way to get rid of unknown sender is to delete all texts. The version I downloaded was Google Messenger 2.1.060 (3735832-30.phone) (arm) (nodpi) (Android 4.4+)

Does it work if you merge carrier SMS with your Google voice?

Google voice Verizon

Anyone else having issues with getting notifications when receiving SMS messages though voice?
I do not get a notification but if I open the app they auto populate and load and finally the voice notification when then show new messages. I switched the app to use the default messaging app and I get the notifications. If I go into the web interface and forward messages to email I get them as well. But the voice app it's self does not notify me of new messages? I know it works because my galaxy would get the notifications and I know background sync is on and running.
Any suggestions? (No root this is a work phone.)
I'd highly recommend you install and use Hangouts for your primary SMS app. The gVoice app is basically just a utility tool to get your gVoice integrated into your dialer and not really meant to be a fantastic SMS app.

Hangouts is installed by default (at least on Verizon.) Appreciate the comment and thank you.
