So I'm sure this is a stupid question, but I'm asking anyway.
Now that Hangouts is the default app on our phones for SMS and MMS, I'm wondering about future potential for it. Specifically, I'd love to be able to use the hangouts app/extension on my desktop to send SMS messages from my phone. It's annoying to have to grab my phone to respond when I'm already at a PC. I'm working around that currently by using Mightytext, but it's annoying and buggy. If Hangouts is going to be the solution for messaging, I'd like to see that feature set integrated. Anyone know if this is possible or planned?
Additionally, is it possible (or planned) to have hangouts archive messages the same way it archives chats? This seems like the most useful purpose/benefit when it comes to using hangouts for text messaging.
Any thoughts or feedback?
I was chatting with a guy last night in the chat window in Gmail and it was syncing to hangouts on my phone?

Yes, chats on google sync to your phone perfectly. I was thinking about SMS messages syncing to my computer the other direction. If you've ever used mightytext, you know what I'm talking about. It seems to me like it should be integrated into hangouts on the PC/gmail/google+

When ever I seem to search good SMS apps on Google, I'm just getting stuff like WhatsApp, which isn't SMS.
I don't like hangouts being part of SMS.
I like Textra myself.
Handcent sms.
I don't use it myself.

You could try Facebook Messenger.
Go to settings in the app --> click SMS/MMS --> Activate to receive and send SMS
Maybe you like it, maybe you don't. I do like it a lot and I think it' worth trying out!
You can find the app in Google Play.
Android 4.1 JB Messaging SMS looks just like SMS did on the N4, down side is that MMS doesn't work in the app.
One of my favourite updates in KitKat is personally the hangouts texting integration. Much nicer interface.
I use an iPhone for work. My personal is a RAZR Maxx Hd. The only thing that I like about the iPhone is imessage and it's ability to send a message even if I only have wifi available.
I like the way imessage toggles between wifi and data seamlessly.
Is there an app like this for android?

I think that Hangouts in its current version (2.0.2) should give you similar experience-
If you decide to let it handle both SMS and online messages
I do hope hangouts. Yet, it will only do SMS over data. It will do wifi, only if I send to someone who has hangouts installed.

Actually, Hangout message can be sent to anyone with Google account (Gmail, Google+, etc.)
Thats what imessage does- just sends message to your apple account...
Hangouts isn't anywhere near as integrated as iMessage. Yes, it does do SMS and internet based messaging, but not seamlessly. Or I can't get it to. The SMS contact is distinct from the google contact. So you send it one or the other.but you can't just have a hangout with someone and then if you send a message when they are out of wireless or 3g it falls back to SMS. With imessage it sent wireless OR sms without you knowing. With hangouts you need to choose if you send it wireless or sms
Or at least I haven't figured how to get it to.

No, that basically how it works- the guys at google enabled the sms feature only 2 versions ago, so hopefully they will improve it in the future to be moe like iMessage (unless Apple already has a patent on it)
Anyway- a good idea for a starup

Prior to owning the Nexus 5, I remember always having an option to attach video, picture, or voice memos straight from the text message app.. is there a way to do this with Hangouts?
You can try textra it is free and allows you to do all of this.
Thanks for the reply.. I'm looking for more of a workaround for Hangouts rather than a replacement.. Looks like there's no way to do it..

Yeah. I was really bummed when I found out Hangouts couldn't send anything other than pictures. iMessage on the stupid iPhone can do it. I don't see why Hangouts can't send videos since you're using a data connection and not the phone signal like SMS or MMS.
This is an old thread but I really want this feature! It would be super handy for people who work together but don't want to call and text all the time. Walkie talkie style, I suppose.
Can't understand why they don't have this feature either. I have a group with my children's grandparents and want to send them voice recordings and videos of the kiddies.
This is because google want you to send videos through Google plus so won't let you do it through hangouts. It's not good tbh as a lot of my friends won't use hangouts because of it. I hate messenger but if facebook does it then google should
Agree with all of you. I really want the ability to send a short video or audio clip in Hangouts. Too bad some genius at Google can't figure it out how to that yet.
I have a feeling those from Google don't use Hangouts for messaging. They created a product with crippled features.
Bump it up!

I have voice message on my phone how can I send it to someone on hangout
I was wondering if anyone knows how to change the default in hangouts to stop an attempted text from going automatically to a Hangout rather than SMS.
For example, my gf has hangouts on her tablet, but not on her iPhone. When I go to click her name from the list, it will automatically default to a hangout. Now she won't ever get the hangout because she never used the nexus tablet. But I can't change it to SMS. Is there a way from hangouts to stop automatically "looking up the contact" and deal directly with SMS until its ready for primetime?

Make sure you send as sms instead of hangout. Like say you have John Smith as a contact. You have both his Google+ name and his phone number, when you create new make sure you hit send SMS to john smith. If you have just phone numbers it automatically goes to SMS

Thanks. I started to learn that myself, but is there a way to stop it from automatically happening? Or should I just get used to this new way of SMS until all androids use hangouts as sms?

It won't automatically happen when you create the SMS message it will always go to the SMS number.
I don't think androids will use hangouts specifically because people like me use different apps, I use textra for example because I absolutely hated trying to send pictures in hangouts. You could only send one, it had to be first and it was just not a good experience for me.
If you start typing the person's name in the search box it should come up with their Hangouts contact as well as their phone number. It just seems to prioritize Hangouts.
Anyone else having issues with getting notifications when receiving SMS messages though voice?
I do not get a notification but if I open the app they auto populate and load and finally the voice notification when then show new messages. I switched the app to use the default messaging app and I get the notifications. If I go into the web interface and forward messages to email I get them as well. But the voice app it's self does not notify me of new messages? I know it works because my galaxy would get the notifications and I know background sync is on and running.
Any suggestions? (No root this is a work phone.)
I'd highly recommend you install and use Hangouts for your primary SMS app. The gVoice app is basically just a utility tool to get your gVoice integrated into your dialer and not really meant to be a fantastic SMS app.

Hangouts is installed by default (at least on Verizon.) Appreciate the comment and thank you.
